BLOODSTOCK WEEKLY PEDIGREE ANALYSIS

Lingfield DerbyTrial winner oncourse to boostsire’s recordBULLET TRAIN

WORTHADD

Race analysis KhalidAbdullah and Henry Cecil(pictured below) endured amixture of fortunes at Lingfieldon Saturday with Bullet Train’ssuccess in the Lingfield DerbyTrial offering some consolationfor the removal of their highlyregarded Timepiece at thehead of the Oaks marketfollowing her one-pacedsecond in the Lingfield OaksTrial.

After Bullet Train haddisposed of Dubawi Phantomand Hot Prospect by two and aquarter lengths at Lingfield, connections would not bedrawn into whether thestrapping son of Sadler’s Wellswould definitely make the tripto Epsom. The Derby Trial wasonly his third outing and therewas evidence throughout therace – as there was when hewas outbattled by Myplacelaterin a hot conditions race atNewbury last month – that theexperience would do himgood.

Bullet Train was held up atNewbury but at Lingfield afterRyan Moore on the favouriteDesert Myth made it knownwithin the first furlong that hedidn’t want to make his ownrunning, Tom Queally took theinitiative and sent Bullet Trainout in front. From there on,the colt had it more or less hisown way, and after his taskwas made easier by the breakdown of Captain James Cookearly in the straight, boundedaway to win with ears pricked.

Dubawi Phantom made goodheadway up the inner to takesecond while Hot Prospect, who settled better than he hasdone in the past, plugged onfor third. Thedisappointment was theimpressive Newmarketmaiden winner DesertMyth, who droppedout tamely.

Needless to say,Epsom will present atotally different test.PedigreeSeven ofthe topeight in theDerbybettingdescendfromSadler’s

Race analysis Since finishingthird on his only juvenile start,Worthadd has won all four ofhis races at three, includingthe Premio Parioli (Italian2,000 Guineas). Prior to theDerby Italiano, his three winswere all at a mile.

Godolphin, who wereattempting to follow-up lastyear’s win with Mastery, sentAmeer, who was made theodds-on favourite. FrankieDettori had the son of Monsun, second to Coordinated Cut atNewmarket in April, in ahandy position, with thewinner on his inside andholding the rail. It was Dettoriwho was first to commit forhome turning into the straight, and Worthadd was held ontofor a few strides as push cameto shove on the majority ofrunners.

Ameer’s effort faded, andMirco Demuro conjuredWorthadd into the lead insidethe final three furlongs. Havingshaken off his fellow frontrunners, Demuro withstoodthe late surges of Ansiei and

By thetime of his retirement in 2008,his Derby tally had doubledthanks to High Chaparral.

While Sadler’s Wells’ affinityfor Darshaan has been welldocumented, Bullet Train isthe product of anothersuccessful, younger cross. LikeSadler’s Wells’ Group 1-performing descendants CimaDe Triomphe, Cuis Ghaire,Teofilo and Tuesday Joy, BulletTrain is out of a Danehill mare,a cross which presents multipleinbreeding to Natalma.

To date, Sadler’s Wells is thesire of 17 foals out of Danehillmares; 12 have won and threeof them, Bullet Train, FergusMcIver and Precious Gem,have secured black-type.

DANON CHANTILLYRace analysis DanonChantilly represents amilestone for SheikhMohammed. By winningSunday’s NHK Mile Cup, the three-year-old colt became thefirst Grade 1 winner bred bythe sheikh’s Darley Japanoperation.

Darley Japan was establishedin June 2002 and its stallionroster includes such illustrioushorses to have carried theGodolphin royal blue silks asFantastic Light and Rule OfLaw, as well as pricey buys likeAdmire Moon.

It has consigned foals andyearlings to the Japan RaceHorse Association’sthoroughbred sales in recentseasons.

Due to a quirk of Japaneseracing rules, SheikhMohammed, along with otherforeign entities, had beenprohibited from owningracehorses except in certaininternational contests, chieflythe Japan Cup, and in lower-level races – and even thenhad to be registered under aJapanese resident’s name.

Darley Japan ran AdmireMoon in the country under aspecial arrangement where thehorse was allowed to competein certain international races;but last year the JRHArelented and announced thatin 2010 all of Japan’s majorraces would be opened toforeign owners.

Sheikh Mohammed, his wifePrincess Haya of Jordan andson Sheikh Hamdan BinMohammed Al Maktoum –along with Singapore-basedMasatsugu Otani – were thefirst four registrants to race inJapan.

So Danon Chantilly’s win isno doubt a harbinger ofincreased success in Japan forDarley, both as breeder andowners.

Sent off the 8-5 favourite,Danon Chantilly won the NHKMile Cup by a length and ahalf from outsider DaiwaBarbarian, shaving a second offthe record time in the process.

The race has been won byKing Kamehameha and DeepSky en route to victory in theTokyo Yushun (JapaneseDerby) in recent years.

Danon Chantilly’s trainerKunihide Matsuda – who alsosaddled King Kamehameha –confirmed after the race that

Initial Grade 1 win for DarleyJapan could be first of many

the Japanese Derby would behis target.

Pedigree It’s fitting that ahorse who provided SheikhMohammed with a landmarkwin should be descended fromone of his finest broodmares –and one who produced for hima winner of Japan’s mostprestigious international race.

Danon Chantilly is out of theMark Of Esteem mareChansonnette, whose besteffort on the track came whensecond in a 1m51/2f race in theFrench provinces (giving a cluethat Danon Chantilly – her firstliving foal – should take thestep up to 1m4f for the JapanDerby in his stride?)

Chansonnette is out ofGlorious Song, America’schampion older mare in 1980.Many of the most famoushorsemen in North America inthe 1980s played pass theparcel with her.

Bred by E.P. Taylor, she wasbought as a yearling by FrankStronach, who then sold a half-share in her to Nelson BunkerHunt, who in turn bought heroutright before selling her onto John Sikura in 1984.

In 1987, the year her thirdfoal, Rahy, finished second inthe Middle Park Stakes, Sikurasold her to SheikhMohammed. The sheikh’s olderbrother Maktoum Al Maktoumhad bought Rahy for $2m fromSikura’s Hill ‘n’ Daleconsignment to the KeenelandJuly yearling sale.

The goose carried on layinggolden eggs, with GloriousSong’s first foal born intoSheikh Mohammed’sownership, Morn Of Song, asister to Rahy, winning threeraces and going on to producePrix Vermeille heroine MezzoSoprano, in turn dam of lastyear’s Group 3 Prix du Lys

winner Claremont. In 1992,Glorious Song producedoutstanding middle-distanceperformer Singspiel as a resultof her visit to In The Wings.

Singspiel won four Group 1races, including the 1996Japan Cup, and went on toshine as a sire (thoughcurrently experiencing fertilityproblems), providingmillionaire Group 1 winnersMoon Ballad , Dar Re Mi,

Asakusa Den’ En and EasternAnthem. Rakeen, Singspiel’sclosely-related older brother byNorthern Dancer, was a highlyinfluential stallion in SouthAfrica, where he died in 2007.

Another reason SheikhMohammed has to be thankfulfor Glorious Song is herunraced 1993 daughter bySadler’s Wells, Ring Of Music, who produced this year’sGroup 2 Dubai City Of Gold

Stakes winner Campanologist. Glorious Song was by Halo

and out of the Herbager mareBallade, making her a sister to1983 champion Americanjuvenile Devil’s Bag and Grade2 winner Saint Ballado, latersire of champions Ashado andSaint Liam.

She died in 2003 but heroffspring are doing a fine jobof keeping her name appearingin pedigrees.

Danon Chantilly is bySunday Silence stallion FujiKiseki, a resident of the ShadaiStallion Station and sire ofDubai Sheema Classic-winningmare Sun Classique.

Sunday Silence was also byHalo, so Danon Chantilly isinbred 3x3 to the sire. Hebecomes the second Group 1winner out of a mare by MarkOf Esteem, after Middle ParkStakes winner Amadeus.Martin Stevens

ZACH JOHNSTONE has no fam-ily background in horses but gotinto the industry though his inter-est in racing. “When I was youngI enjoyed watching the sport andgot more and more into the pedi-grees of the horses. I found thewhole thing fascinating and I de-cided I wanted to work with hor-ses from there,” he said.

He decided to apply for theIrish National Stud on the rec-ommendation of a former grad-uate. “A good friend of mine,Julie Storme, spoke very highlyabout the course and she urgedme to apply. I didn’t think I wouldbe accepted but I was delightedto get the chance to come here.”

Prior to travelling to the NationalStud, Johnstone worked at Arrow-field Stud for three summers.

Mamlook’s success setsBetaghstown on a roll

By Cathal Beale

THE winner of the Chester Cup,Mamlook, initiated a notabledouble at the meeting for hisbreeder, the Betaghstown Studof Peter Jones in County Kildare. The six-year-old Key Of Luck geld-ing’s success was followed byThin Red Line’s victory in theCVAM Handicap. The dual succ-ess is all the more remarkableconsidering the stud houses justfour mares.

“We bought the farm around 20years ago and started off withone mare,” Jones recalled. “We gotsome great advice from Dr JohnFlynn and purchased Lady Red-ford. On his advice we went toRoyal Academy with her and theresult was Tiger Royal. He wonthe Group 3 Greenlands Stakes forDermot Weld, which was a greatstart.”

“Mamlook was a lovely yearlingand we sold him to Shadwell for€110,000 at Goffs. The mare,Cradle Brief is phenomenal. Shealways produces beautiful stock. This year we have a lovely Whip-per filly yearling out of her andshe has a Tamayuz colt foal. Welike the sire and are very happywith the foal so she is back infoal to him again this year.

“We’ve also got a nice Law-man yearling filly out of Fara-day Light who is a half sister tothe Group 3 winner High Heeled.”

As well as selling one or twoyearlings a year, BetaghstownStud also keep a few horses intraining.

“We have two horses in train-

far. I have really enjoyed every-thing but the yearling rotationhas definitely been the highlight.

“Things are done differentlyhere as the horses are stabledmuch more than at home, so it hasbeen good to see a different wayof doing things.”

Johnstone plans to enrol inuniversity at some future point, but once the course is finished hehopes to work with a bloodstockagent. “I will be up here untilOctober and I would love to getsome work helping an agent at thesales while I am here. I was at theGuineas meeting at Newmarketlast week and I would love toget back there for a while.”

As one of the lucky few whomanaged to find the winner of the2,000 Guineas, Johnstone hopesto continue his good run by offer-ing a two-year-old to follow.

“I was really lucky to get a tipfor Makfi and it was unbeliev-able when he won, but I was alsoreally impressed with TempleMeads who won a maiden on1,000 Guineas day. He was boughtcheaply and could turn out to bea Royal Ascot two-year-old. He isowned by John Fretwell, who isa good friend of mine.”

QUICK QUESTIONSClifford Barry, General Manager at PinOak Stud, which stoodMaria’s Mon, sire of thisyear’s Kentucky Derbywinner Super Saver

What brought you to theUSA? Michael Osborne wasthe instigator. I had worked forthree years at Kildangan Studand went to Kentucky to workfor a breeding season – 22years later I’m still here.

Maria’s Mon is only the fifthhorse in 50 years to sire twoKentucky Derby winners, how did you acquire him?We took a 50 per cent interestin him in his two-year-old yearbefore he won the Grade 1Champagne Stakes. The ideawas to go racing but he gothurt before the Breeders’ Cup.He still won the Eclipse Awardas champion two-year-old butnever came back from thatinjury. When he retired to studhe started at $7,500 and wentfrom strength to strength, standing for $60,000 in hisfinal year.

What have been his careerhighlights? It gave us greatpride to watch him mature intoa top stallion from a humblestart. We were able to setmodest fees so we could pickhis mares. There have beenmany top stallions in centralKentucky in the past 50 yearsthat have not sired one Derbywinner, let alone two.

With the death of Maria’sMon in 2007, Broken Vowhas become the stud’sflagship sire – how has hefared in 2010? When we lostMaria’s Mon he was reachingthe peak of his career andthere was huge pressure onBroken Vow to fill the void.Private Vow, a Grade 2 winnerin his first crop, got him off toa great start. He has alreadysired six stakes winners in2010 and has been a solid top25 horse in the General Sireslist. He does well at the sales, siring versatile progeny thatexcel on dirt, all-weather andturf. In 2010, exciting earlyprospects have included Grade3 stakes-winning son Interactif, sophomore filly Sassy Image, adual graded stakes winner, andStay Put, a potential Grade 1Belmont Stakes starter.
