MIDDAYRace analysis The NassauStakes should provide anopportunity to measure therelative strengths of thethree-year-old filly crop againsttheir elders. But this year’srenewal, which took place atGoodwood on good to firmground on Saturday, wasdominated by four-year-olds,with fillies of that age fillingthe first four places and thetwo three-year-old entrants, along with older mareBarshiba, coming home last ofthe seven runners.

This year’s field looked wellup to scratch. Last season’sNassau and Breeders’ Cup Filly& Mare Turf heroine Middaystarted favourite, with lastseason’s Prix de Diane winnerStacelita, this season’s Prix deDiane runner-up Rosanara andWindsor Forest Stakes winnerStrawberrydaiquiri among thefancied runners.

Barshiba, fresh from a repeatsuccess in the Lancashire Oaks, cut out the running, closelytracked by Midday, Stacelitaand Antara. At the two-furlongpole Midday made her moveand went two lengths clear, with Stacelita giving chase. When she idled a furlong fromhome, Stacelita briefly got herhead in front, but Middaypicked up again, despitehanging left, and shot clear, passing the line one and aquarter lengths in front ofStacelita.

Antara, bought byGodolphin in training fromGermany, stayed on well forthird, with Strawberrydaiquiria further three-quarters of alength behind her in fourth.French raider Rosanara hadbeen unable to take her chancein the Irish Oaks two weeksearlier, having become upseton the plane in France, andshe was brought to Goodwoodby train. However, shedisappointed badly, havingbeen held up at the back of thepack but being unable toquicken when asked.

Midday’s trainer Henry Cecilreported that the filly gotjarred up after being beateninto second by Sariska in theMiddleton Stakes on good to

firm ground at York in May, sothe rest of her campaign thisyear may be dictated by theweather. The Yorkshire Oakson August 19 is her short-termaim, and she will no doubt betargeted at a repeat victory atthe Breeders’ Cup. In hercurrent form, she would be atough nut for the colts to crackin the Breeders’ Cup Turf.

Pedigree Midday is a trueJuddmonte-bred from the topto the bottom of her pedigree.

Her sire Oasis Dream, achampion at two and three inKhalid Abdullah’s silks, hasbeen the stallion sensation ofthe past few seasons. Nowhalfway through his fourthseason with progeny of racingage, he has sired sevenindividual Group 1 winners, including Lady Jane Digby, who won the GrosserDallmayr-Preis six days beforethe Nassau.

She is descended from oneof Abdullah’s most importantbroodmare acquisitions,Mofida, who, like anotherJuddmonte blue hen, Sookera(grand-dam of Hasili, dam offive Group 1 winners and in-form sire Dansili), wasbought in foal to The Minstrelfrom Robert Sangster.

That foal by The Minstrelturned out to be Zaizafon, damof brilliant 2,000 Guineaswinner Zafonic and Zamindar, who gained immortality as sireof the Aga Khan’s fantastic fillyZarkava. The result ofJuddmonte’s first choice ofmating for Mofida, Roberto, was Modena, who proved justas able as a broodmare, producing Group 1 winnersElmaamul and Reams Of Verse, and Lingfield Oaks Trialrunner-up Midsummer, thedam of Midday.

The family came under themicroscope on these pages twoweeks ago, when last season’sHaydock Sprint Cup winnerRegal Parade – whose grand-dam is a half-sister to Modenaand Zaizafon – won theShadwell Stakes at Newbury.Other relations currently intraining who are doing theirbit for family honour includelast year’s Queen Elizabeth IIStakes runner-up Zacinto, agrandson of Reams Of Verse,

SMILING TIGERRace analysis Smiling Tigerstruck a blow for the Americanthree-year-old crop with a oneand a half length victory overhis elders in the 6f Bing CrosbyStakes at Del Mar.

Smiling Tiger was high classlast year, running last season’schampion juvenile andsubsequent standout three-year-old Lookin At Lucky closewhen placed in the Best PalStakes and Del Mar Futurity.

He had already beaten olderrivals this year, when makingall to win the Grade 3 LazaroBarrera Memorial at HollywoodPark in May.

So it was a measure of thehigh-quality field thatassembled for the Bing Crosbythat he was sent off the fourthfavourite in a six-runner race.Cost Of Freedom, a Grade 1-winning sprinter in 2008 whohad won the Grade 3 LosAngeles Handicap from runner-up E Z’s Gentleman onhis last start, started odds-onfavourite, ahead of re-opposingE Z’s Gentleman who wassecond most favoured bypunters, while third favouritewas Scenic Blast, who landedlast year’s King’s Stand Stakesat Royal Ascot for Australia, but making his second start fornew trainer John Shirreffs inthe US.

But none of Smiling Tiger’s

last year’s Joel Stakes scorerConfront, who is out ofModena’s 1998 daughter byDanzig, Contiguous, and thisseason’s Yorkshire Cup heroManifest, Modena’s last foal,by Rainbow Quest.

Furthermore, Mofida is alsoancestress of last month’sListed Prix de Thibervillewinner Announce, last season’sSt Leger Yearling Stakes scorerMidnight Martini and April’sGroup 2 bet365 Mile third TheCheka.

lengths. E Z’s Gentleman wasover three lengths back inthird.

In the process of laying downa marker for the Breeders’ CupSprint, which is reported to be

his goal this season, SmilingTiger gave his trainer JeffBonde a first Grade 1 success.

Pedigree Smiling Tiger alsoprovided his sire, Hold ThatTiger, with a first top-flightsuccess.

Like Ishiguru, Hold ThatTiger was a seven-figurepurchase by Coolmore in hiscase for $1.1million at theKeeneland November sale as afoal. He is a Storm Cat half-brother to Belmont Stakeswinner Editor’s Note and outof a half-sister to Hennessy, who was also by Storm Catand enjoyed success as a sire, notably with all-conqueringjuvenile Johannesburg (sire ofSaturday’s Stewards’ Cupwinner Evens And Odds) andthis season’s 1,000 Guineasheroine Special Duty.

Hold That Tiger won theGroup 1 Grand Criterium atLongchamp at two, beating LeVie Dei Colori andIntercontinental, and ran thirdin the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile, but, similar to Ishiguru, hedidn’t deliver as much as hepromised at three, failing towin a race but doing enough –including finishing second toMineshaft in the Woodward

SHE’S OUR MARK

Markskeepingfaith makes markEDWARD WHITAKER/RACINGPOSTPIX.COM

PATRICK McCANN/RACINGPOSTPIX.COM

Race analysis She’s OurMark confirmed herself one ofthe toughest older mares inIreland with a convincingone-and-a-half-length win inthe Give Thanks Stakes at Corkon Sunday, her sixth inblack-type company.

The Patrick Flynn-trainedsix-year-old didn’t drop manyclues at two that she would bea future Pattern winner, remaining a maiden from sixstarts – although she didmanage a close second in avaluable backend nursery atLeopardstown.

It was at three that She’s OurMark began to bloom – andshow that, as well as class, shepossessed admirable hardiness.Starting off in May, sheprogressed through handicapsto finish second to RedstoneDancer in the Group 3Brownstown Stakes andeventually scored her firstblack-type win in the Group 3Desmond Stakes against coltsand older horses. In the raceshe took the scalp ofsubsequent Diadem Stakeshero Haatef and another Group2 winner in Lord Admiral. Thatseason she started ten times, finishing out of the first threeonly three times.

At four she failed to get herhead in front, but showed thatshe had lost none of her talent, with runners-up spots in Group3 company and in the GalwayMile Handicap, where she wascarrying 5lb more than thewinner, Celtic Dane.

At five last year she addedanother three stakes-race winsto her resume and picked upsome eyecatching form alongthe way – including whenbeating Chinese White onheavy ground (and, admittedly, receiving 3lb) to land theVictor McCalmont MemorialStakes and when fifth toSpacious in the Windsor Forestat Royal Ascot, with LushLashes and Proviso behind.

She’s Our Mark’s GiveThanks victory – in which sheoutran the three-year-oldGalileo fillies Leo Gali (beatenone and a half lengths intosecond) and Zarebiya (a shorthead back in third) on only hersecond start over as far as1m4f – was her second win ofthe season. In April shedelivered the boys anotherbeating, including a below-par

Fame And Glory, in the AllegedStakes at the Curragh.

Since her three-year-olddays, where she won one raceeach on good and good to firmground, all of She’s Our Mark’svictories have come on rain-softened going between1m1f and 1m4f.

Flynn said after the race thatthe mare would be kept intraining. She has so far provedunequal to the task in threestarts at the top level, andGroup 3 seems to be her level, but you feel that, given theright conditions and weakercompetition, she could makeher presence felt in a top raceon the continent. However, in43 starts she has only travelledabroad to race once – to Ascot.Pedigree In stark contrast toMidday, She’s Our Mark’spedigree is light on black type.In fact, she’s only the fifth –and by the far the best – black-type performer under her firstfour dams. So it’s not difficultto see why she was picked upfor only 3,500gns as a foal.

She is the first produce outof Markskeepingfaith, who, though unable to score in sixtries in stakes company, mayhave passed down hertoughness to her daughter.

A daughter of Ajraas – awell-bred and talented, buttemperamental son ofNorthern Dancer whose stud

record is of little account –Markskeepingfaith was a4,000gns yearling purchasewho won seven of her 46 startsover 7f to 1m1f between theages of three and six.

Two of her siblings pickedup black type, but their talentslay in the jumps sphere, withone, Mystical City, winning theGalway Hurdle, and the other,Keeping The Faith, finishingplaced in Grade 2 company asa juvenile hurdler.

Markskeepingfaith’s dam,Felicitas, by another esotericsire in Queen Anne Stakesscorer Mr Fluorocarbon, was amodest winning hurdler whocan claim no black-typeperforming siblings.

So surely much of the creditfor She’s Our Mark’s class onthe Flat must go to her sire, the late Ishiguru. A superblybred son of Danzig and dualUS Grade 1 heroine StrategicManeuver, Ishiguru was a$1.15m yearling purchase forCoolmore.

He was one of AidanO’Brien’s brightest prospectsafter winning a backendmaiden at Naas by 11 lengthsat two, but flopped in his firstfour starts at three. He got hiscareer back on track with headvictories in the Listed BelgraveStakes and Group 3 FlyingFive, but it was not enough torescue his reputation, and

instead of retiring to Coolmoreat the end of the season heembarked on his stud career asa cheap source of speed atTweenhills Stud inGloucestershire, owned byShe’s Our Mark’s co-breederDavid Redvers.

Ishiguru got his stud careeroff to a flying start when hisson Hellvelyn beat MajorCadeaux to win the CoventryStakes and finished second inthe Phoenix Stakes. He hassince been represented by two

THE five-day Glorious Goodwoodmeeting ended on Saturday withIrish-bred horses having beensuccessful in a creditable four ofthe 12 Group races, writes CathalBeale. American-breds were onthe mark once, through LordShanakill, and there was also a rarevictory for a UAE-bred horse, withEastern Aria landing the LillieLangtry Stakes.

The first Group race of theweek was the Gordon Stakes andthis went the way of Irish-bredRebel Soldier. Bred by the EnGarde syndicate, named after thedam of the Danehill Dancer colt,Rebel Soldier was sold as a year-ling by Timmy Hyde’s CamasPark Stud to Blandford Blood-stock at the Tattersalls OctoberYearling Sale.

Irish-bred horses had a great sec-ond day on the meeting, with

Canford Cliffs landing the Group1 Sussex Stakes, from anotherIrish-bred in Rip Van Winkle. TheTagula colt was landing his thirdGroup 1 race of the season andwas bred by Simon Hubbard. Hewas bought as a foal by JimmyMurphy ’s Redpender Stud before being resold to Peter Doyle.Murphy bought Canford Cliffs’dam, Mrs Marsh, atTattersalls in2008 and sells her Holy RomanEmperor yearling this year.

CHRISTY HART will certainly bein buoyant mood when he sub-mits one of the largest drafts atnext week’s Tattersalls IrelandNational Hunt Sale at Fairyhouse.Hart Livery Farm & Stud achieveda notable success at Goodwoodlast week as the County Kildare-based operation consigned Tropi-cal Paradise, winner of the Group3 Oak Tree Stakes last Thursday,as a foal in 2006.

The Peter Winkworth-trainedfour-year-old daughter of Verglasis the third foal out of the Mujadilmare Ladylishandra and made€36,000 as a foal when selling under the Hart Livery banner atthe Goffs November Foal Sale.

“She was a lovely correct foalwith a good walk”, says Hart.“Her dam was owned by a goodsyndicate of people includingAlan Maguire, a near neighbour, and her foals were raised hereuntil the mare was sold last year.”

As well as consigning horses forsales, Hart Livery Farm offerbreaking services and board anumber of mares for outsideclients. “Foaling is a major partof our business and at the heightof things we were foaling around180 mares, but this year we foaled80. It is becoming harder andharder to be competitive, especiallyas we have 24-hour staffing dur-ing foaling,” says Hart.

“We are very fortunate to haveexcellent clients and we would liketo think that we are an asset tothem as well. To achieve this, good staff are so important. APolish couple named Mariuzsand Yvonna have been with us forfive years and are excellent.

“During the foaling season wehave a first-class nightwatchperson in Alison Thorne as well.It is all about surrounding your-self with good people, especiallywhen you are dealing with peo-ple’s investment you have to doyour absolute best,” says Hart.

Paradise puts Hart in perfect place

A WONDERFUL week at Ballybritwas highlighted by Dermot Weld’smagnificent 11 victories and TonyMcCoy finally winning a GalwayPlate, writes Cathal Beale. Unsur-prisingly Irish-breds dominated butit was a British-based breederwho was responsible for the winner of the most valuable raceof the week.

Although carrying an Ire suffixOverturn was bred by PendleyFarms, owned by Peter Harris. The six-year-old son of Barathearan on the flat for Walter Swin-burn and Donald McCain paid£75,000 for him at DoncasterSales in 2009. It took him fivestarts to get his head in front, but Overturn has now won fiveof his last six starts including theGalway Hurdle.

The Plate of course went toMcCoy on board JP McManus’s

Hart established the stud justoutside Naas back in 1997, withhis wife Paula, having previous-ly been a dairy-farmer by trade.“My horse background is in event-ing but my absolute passion ishunting with the Kildare andWest Wicklow Hunts. My wife isalso involved in eventing anddressage and plays an active rolewith the local ITBA,” says Hart.

Another string to the stud’sbow is their resident stallion Artan who covered about 25 or30 mares this year. “We reallylike the look of his stock and hehas sired some good horses such

as Waleria and Boccassini,” saysHart. “We have a very nice year-ling filly by him which we hopeto send to the breeze-up sale nextyear.”

With the breeding season longsince past, Hart is focused on theupcoming sales and with ten en-tered for next week’s NationalHunt sale at Fairyhouse it promis-es to be a busy time.

“We have some nice horses forthe sale. There is a three-year-old filly out of a half sister to thegreat Baracouda, who we arevery excited about and a nicegelding out of a sister to Hell’s Bay.”

This is a family Hart is partic-ularly familiar with and un-doubtedly fond of. “Hell’s Bay isout of Queen’s Flagship who hasbeen a very lucky mare for us. Wesold her first foal at Fairyhousefor 50,000 guineas which was aworld record price for a store foalsold at auction at the time. We thensold Hell’s Bay for €90,000 atthe same venue in 2002 to againbreak the record. The mare put uson the map,” says Hart.

While the Group 3 success ofTropical Paradise represents thegreatest achievement for the studon the Flat, other stud graduates

include the Ger Lyons-trainedCity Of Tribes, who was twiceplaced in listed company.

Success in the jumps game hascome more frequently and thebest may be yet to come. Hartpurchased a Presenting foal outof Una Juna in November 2005.Just four months later his fullbrother, War Of Attrition landedthe Cheltenham Gold Cup.

“Hopefully he will be a great success for his connections andI will be watching out for himwith great interest when he makeshis debut on the racecourse,”says Hart.

Tropical Paradise and Ian Mongan power away from Golden Stream (No 2) and Pyrrha for victory in the Oak Tree Stakes at Goodwood
