LOOKIN AT LUCKYRace analysis And so thewait for the first Americantriple crown winner sinceAffirmed in 1978 goes on,after this year’s KentuckyDerby hero Super Saverflopped when tackling verydifferent conditions in thePreakness Stakes (the trackwas sloppy at Churchill Downs, but faster going prevailed atPimlico), finishing 12 lengthsbehind the winner, Lookin AtLucky, in eighth.

The search also goes on for aClassic-aged colt or gelding inthe US to set down a markeras a potential champion. Lastyear’s champion Americanjuvenile Lookin At Lucky hadto dig really deep to run downlong-time leader First Dude, who had failed to get to withinfive lengths of the winner onhis last two starts in Grade 1company.

Jackson Bend, who hadflopped when 12th in the Runfor the Roses, showed morepromise with a running-onthird. He had been beaten intosecond by Eskendereya in bothFebruary’s Fountain of YouthStakes (by eight and a halflengths) and last month’sWood Memorial Stakes(by just under ten lengths).

Eskendereya was pulled outof the Kentucky Derby, and thenretired from racing, this monthdue to a leg injury. Unless oneof his male peers puts his headabove the parapet with animpressive victory, there isevery possibility that Americanracing fans will have beentreated to only a fleetingglimpse of this year’schampion three-year-old.

Lookin At Lucky, trained byBob Baffert, looked veryunlucky not to keep a cleansheet at two, having to racewide but storming home andfailing by only a head to reel inVale Of York in the Breeders’Cup Juvenile. On each of hisfirst three runs at three he mettrouble in running: on hisseasonal debut in the RebelStakes he overcame it, beatingNoble’s Promise by a head; butin the Santa Anita Derby andthe Kentucky Derby, a troubledpassage proved to be hisundoing, and he finished anever-nearer third and sixth.

Lookin At Lucky is set tobypass the Belmont Stakes andtake a well-earned rest, withthe Haskell Invitational inAugust a possible short-termaim. The Preakness has givenhim a solid basis on which toprogress, but he is a colt whoneeds things in his favour – a

fast track, strong pace and atrouble-free passage.Pedigree Lookin At Lucky’ssire Smart Strike has ascendedto the elite league of Americanstallions, not only through theconsistency with which heproduces top-class horses – arecord of at least one Grade 1winner in each of his first sixcrops attests to that – but alsohis versatility.

His best offspring haveborne the hallmarks oftoughness and durability:superstar son Curlin won 11 ofhis 16 starts at three to fourand finished out of the firstthree only once; EnglishChannel blossomed at the agesof four and five, when he wonsix Grade 1s and signed off hiscareer by routing his rivals inthe Breeders’ Cup Turf; andFabulous Strike posted his bestRacing Post Ratings last year, when narrowly beaten in twoGrade 1s, at the age of six. Then there was TungstenStrike, his best performer to betrained in Europe for theentirety of his career, who wasa regular fixture in the topstaying races and won a goodfew too, up until the age ofeight last year.

But many Smart Strikes haveproved to be precocious too, asproven by Lookin At Lucky andSquare Eddie, who was trainedby John Best at two to finishsecond in the Sirenia Stakesand win the Lane’s EndBreeders’ Futurity in the US.

Smart Strike, North America’sleading sire in 2007 and ’08, isalso damsire of KentuckyDerby hero Mine That Bird andPreakness runner-up FirstDude, so he is well on his wayto confirming himself as acomplete sire – it would nowonly take a successful stallionson (Curlin and EnglishChannel will no doubt havebeen given every chance atstud, and an earlier high-classson, Tenpins, sired this year’sPuerto Rican Grade 1 winnerSummer Line) to seal the deal.

With such a fine record, itwas no surprise to see SmartStrike’s fee at Lane’s End inKentucky soar as high as$150,000 in 2008, the year

after Curlin and EnglishChannel gave him a Breeders’Cup-night double. In morefinancially straitened times, hisfee is back down to $75,000.

Lookin At Lucky was bred byGulf Coast Farms out ofwinning sprinter PrivateFeeling, a daughter of anotherLane’s End resident in BelongTo Me. Grade 1 Hopeful Stakeswinner Circular Quay was bredon a similar pattern: he is byThunder Gulch (like SmartStrike, a son of Mr Prospector)and also out of a mare byBelong To Me.

He is a half-brother to Kensei, who revealed her talent in themonths following Lookin AtLucky’s sale for $475,000 atlast year’s Keeneland Apriltwo-year-olds in-training sale.In July and August she wontwo Grade 2s, the Dwyer Stakesand Jim Dandy Stakes, by atotal five and a half lengths.

You would infer from thedisparity between Lookin AtLucky’s yearling andtwo-year-old prices that heimproved a lot physically, as hewas led out of the ring unsoldat the Keeneland Septemberyearling sale at just $35,000.Martin Stevens

LIZARD’S DESIRERace analysis Lizard’s Desireshowed no ill-effects of a busycampaign to finally get hishead in front after twonear-misses at Group 1 level.Although only four, thegelding is rapidly gaining aglobetrotting reputation, withMike de Kock saddling him tocompete in South Africa,Dubai, Hong Kong and, onSunday, in Singapore.

Back in March, Lizard’sDesire almost pulled off a 33-1shock when just failing tocatch Gloria De Campeao inthe Dubai World Cup. The pairmet again in this contest, withLizard’s Desire having sincerun a close second to VivaPataca in the Audemars PiguetQE II Cup at Sha Tin lastmonth. Gloria De Campeao, onthe other hand, arrived atKranji as a fresh horse.

Pascal Bary’s toughBrazilian-bred was almostsuccessful again, stalking theJapanese leader, Jolie’s Shinju, before taking it up two furlongsout. At that point, Lizard’sDesire was still in seventh, butunder driving from jockeyKevin Shea, made relentlessprogress down the centre ofthe track to challenge half afurlong from home. As hard asGloria De Campeao tried, hecould not repel the momentumof Lizard’s Desire, who got upto win by half a length.

British-bred Al Shemali, ason of Medicean, ran on totake third, while favouritePresvis was never able to strikea real blow after adopting his

customary early position at thetail of the field. Luca Cumani’sgelding eventually finishedfifth.

Pedigree Lizard’s Desire isthe first Group 1 winner forLizard Island, who wasthwarted by nigglingproblems from reaching his fullpotential on the track. AnA$800,000 Australian yearlingpurchase by Coolmore agentJames Bester on behalf ofprominent South Africanbreeder Sabine Platter, LizardIsland reportedly showedplenty of talent in themornings and, after winningtwo of three starts over 5-6f,was retired to Platter’s La

Plaisance Stud in SouthAfrica.

Lizard Island certainly ownsa pedigree to be successful atstud; by Lure, who alsoproduced Prix Morny winnerand sire Orpen during a studcareer that was dogged byfertility problems, he is ahalf-brother to AustralianGroup 2 winner Langoustine aswell as Royal Lodge Stakesrunner-up Achill Island.Adding further credibility is hisdam, the Artichoke marePrawn Cocktail, who is ahalf-sister to Royal Academyand Terlingua, the dam ofStorm Cat.

Lizard’s Desire is by far thebest of four stakes performers

LOPE DE VEGARace analysis TheStanJames.com 2,000 Guineasform received a boost withrunner-up Dick Turpin, whohad split French raider Makfiand stablemate Canford Cliffsat Newmarket, again runningbravely to finish second in theFrench version at Longchampon Sunday.

The Richard Hannon-trainedcolt was once more denied bya French horse, this time by alength by Gestüt Ammerland’shomebred Lope De Vega.Shamalgan, trained in theCzech Republic by ArslangireySavujev, was beaten twolengths into third.

The form of last month’s Prixde Fontainebleau proved key, although the finishing order inthat messy race was jumbledup this time. Rajsaman, viewedas a pacemaker for fellow AgaKhan entrant and odds-onfavourite Siyouni, had stolenthe Fontainebleau after goingclear and just hanging on fromSiyouni, with Lope De Vega(in his sole run at three beforethe Poulains) third andShamalgan sixth.

Rajsaman could not cling onto his lead in the Poulains, fading to tenth, beaten tenlengths, and Siyouni, againfavourite for the Classic, foundsome trouble in running twofurlongs from home but madeonly moderate late progress tofinish ninth.

It looks as though Lope DeVega may have progressed pastSiyouni at three, having beenhis inferior as a juvenile. Twoimpressive victories innon-stakes races at Deauvilleand Longchamp entitled LopeDe Vega to line up as favouritefor the Prix Jean-LucLagardere at Longchamp inOctober, but he was beatenfair and square into fourthbehind Siyouni in what turnedout to be a classy renewal ofthe race – subsequentBreeders’ Cup Juvenile Turfwinner Pounced finishedsecond, Dick Turpin was fifthand Dewhurst scorerBeethoven came sixth.

Lope De Vega – his trainerAndre Fabre’s fifth Poulainswinner – could now head tothe Prix du Jockey Club toattempt the French Classicdouble that was last completedby his sire, Shamardal.

Pedigree The early signs fromthe 2010 Flat season seem to

point to the fact that last year’sclass of European freshmansires was a vintage crop. Thechampions by both chiefcriteria – number of individualwinners (Dubawi) and totalprogeny earnings (Shamardal)– both have Classic winnersalready, Dubawi having sired2,000 Guineas hero Makfi andPremio Parioli and DerbyItaliano scorer Worthadd andShamardal with Lope De Vega.

Azamour has in recent

weeks been represented by twoClassic trial winners, Azmeeland Puncher Clynch, Arakanhas a fine flagbearer in DickTurpin, and Footstepsinthesand(sire of Shamalgan) andOratorio both have leadingfancies for Saturday’s AbuDhabi Irish 2,000 Guineas inSteinbeck and Fencing Master.

After his first Europeanjuveniles got off to a flyingstart – including Group 3winners Arctic andShakespearean – and his first

Australian-bred crop yieldeddual Group 1-winning fillyFaint Perfume, it was not acomplete surprise to seeShamardal, himself a first-cropClassic winner for his sireGiant’s Causeway, also get afirst-crop Classic winner.

Especially when the strongsupport from his owner,Sheikh Mohammed, is factoredin. Among the mares in theDarley broodmare band whovisited Shamardal in his firstseason at stud in 2006 wereGroup performers Badminton,Bahr, Belle Argentine, Melikah(a half-sister to Galileo andSea The Stars), MezzoSoprano (dam of Saturday’sTotepool Aston Park Stakeswinner Claremont), Noushkey, and, in what must rank as ahigh compliment from thesheikh, Colorado Dancer, thedam of Dubai Millennium, who produced an as-yet

unraced filly from themating.

Shamardal’s starriestconcubines from outside theDarley fold in his first seasonincluded King’s Stand Stakesheroine Cassandra Go(later dam of Halfway ToHeaven), Oaks winnerDiminuendo (was barren),plus the dams of Alkaadhem,Amadeus Wolf, Bachir, LadyMarian, Love Divine and RightApproach – and none otherthan Urban Sea, who was, unfortunately, barren.

Another tribute toShamardal’s first-seasonpopularity is the fact thatGestüt Ammerland founderand owner Dietrich vonBoetticher, in the year after hewatched his homebredHurricane Run narrowly fail topeg back Shamardal in thePrix du Jockey Club, sent himhis expensive new purchaseLady Vettori.

Von Boetticher’s adviserCrispin de Moubray hadsecured Lady Vettori, a winnerof the Prix du Calvados andthird in the Prix MarcelBoussac, for €500,000 at theArqana breeding-stock sale inDecember 2005. The price wasmore than three times as muchas any other horse in theauction that year made. At thatpoint, the mare’s stud recordincluded one winner from twostarters, and the foal she wascarrying by Montjeu – sire ofHurricane Run, who twomonths earlier had won theArc – was no doubt a big draw.

The resultant foal, a coltnamed Le Roc, shared thesame sire and, for his first sixstarts, the same connections(trained by Fabre forAmmerland) as Hurricane Run.But there the similaritiesended, as he won just onestart, at Maisons-Laffitte attwo, and was subsequentlysold.

Lope De Vega, the result ofAmmerland’s first choice ofmate of Lady Vettori, hasjustified the dam’s loftypurchase price, and the colt’syearling half-brother byMonsun could make theinvestment look even betterstill this year as he is set tocome up for auction atNewmarket or Deauville.

Lope De Vega is inbred 3x3to Machiavellian, the damsireof Shamardal and thegrandsire of Lady Vettori.Martin Stevens

by Lizard Island, whose half adozen crops of racing age alsoinclude Group 3 winnerJamaican Dream and Listedwinner Favourite Island.

Inbred 4x4 to the siblingsChappaquiddick and Pieces OfEight (by Relic out of BabyDoll), Lizard’s Desire is ahalf-brother to three minorwinners.

His dam, Annsfield, wasunplaced in South Africa andhails from a largely uninspiringfamily. She was reportedly atone time used for trekking inSouth Africa’s rural bush, andafter being ridden in a trailride by Lizard’s Desire’sbreeder, was purchased by himand eventually sent to LizardIsland.Nancy Sexton

HARRIET LODER grew up nearLingfield in Surrey but her initialinvolvement with horses was inthe showjumping arena. She com-peted internationally at GrandPrix level as a full-time profes-sional, as well as undertaking amodelling career, before turningher interest to the thoroughbredindustry.

Her cousin, the former trainerDavid Loder, selects horses forGodolphin and her uncle SirEdmund Loder is the owner ofEyrefield House Stud, where PrettyPolly, among others, was born.Loder’s initial interest in racingstemmed from there.

“I’ve always gone racing withmy uncle but a couple of years agoI became more interested in thor-oughbreds,” she said. “I workedthe sales with Eyrefield Lodgeand Castlebridge and I also spenttime at the sales with the blood-stock agent Richard Frisby. Ilearned a lot from these experi-ences from both sides.”

“It was my uncle who sugg-ested the Irish National StudCourse and I thought it was agreat way to learn more aboutthe breeding side. I’ve really en-joyed the stallion rotation. Theyare very clever and you have tobe on the ball with them all the

time. It’s great to see the differ-ent types of mares and their prog-eny come into the shed.

“Once the course is finished Ihope to continue my showjump-ing and modelling work but I’dalso like to gain more experiencewith a bloodstock agent. My long-term plan is to become a successfulbreeder.”

QUICK QUESTIONSEvan Arkwright, commercial manager at the Curragh

How has the recessionaffected the Curragh? Thebiggest hit we’ve suffered hasbeen in corporate hospitality;demand is seriously reducedcompared to two years ago.The situation was even worse, but the market has become alittle stronger this year.Sponsorship has also suffered.Big meetings remain strong butinterest in middle- to lower-end meetings has reduced.

At the Guineas meeting thisweekend what can peopleexpect at the Curragh? Weare also staging the first leg ofthe UAE Cup series of races forPurebred Arabian horses. Thiswill be only the second timeIreland will have hosted suchraces and horses trained fromas far afield as Sweden will be

competing. Horses uniquelylink our country to Abu Dhabi, who are the lead sponsors. Tocelebrate this there will be anArabic theme throughout theweekend, with an Abu Dhabitourism marquee as well as afalconry exhibition. There willalso be a fantastic trip to AbuDhabi up for grabs.

What upcoming events areplanned? At our next meetingon Friday June 4 Status Quowill be performing after racing. The concert theme has beenextremely successful in Britainand if this venture works therewill be more music events nextyear. We are also teaming upwith horsemen’s associationsto select a Lifetime in Racingachievement award on July 17.Another initiative in thepipeline will be our Irish PonyClub Day which will take placeon September 26 to encourageyoung people with an interestin horses to become involvedin racing as well.

BREEDER Des de Vere Hunt andhis business partner Jack Ronanhave already enjoyed a pinnacleyear thanks to the Dante Stakesvictory of Cape Blanco and theRichard Hannon-trained juvenileRetainer, who is Royal Ascotbound after an impressive vic-tory at Newmarket last month.

Their achievement is all themore remarkable when consideringonly three mares are kept on theGarraun Stud, Fethard, CountyTipperary, which De Vere Hunt pur-chased for £10,000 from his latefather in 1973 and was originallyused as a cattle and sheep farm.

That all changed when De VereHunt bought his first mare, GustyGirl, and was then inspired totake out a loan to buy another inVarinessa, who produced York-shire Oaks winner Condessa, JimBolger’s first Group 1 success.

to Goffs as a prelude to travellingover there. I was there for aboutfive minutes when Varinessacaught my eye and I ended up tak-ing her home. I went to New-market the year after and boughtanother mare which ended upproducing Varingo, who won the1979 Coventry Stakes. It was anunbelievable start.”

Cape Blanco’s dam, Laurel Del-ight, was bought at Doncaster.“I got into a bit of a bidding warbut I wanted her badly and ithas eventually worked out,” DeVere Hunt said. “I’ve always hadhuge faith in Galileo as a sireand Cape Blanco was a fantasticfoal. He had a unique attitudeand did everything so easily. Twomonths prior to the sale I had apainting of the horse done and it’shanging in my sitting room. I al-ways thought the world of him.”

Cape Blanco made €330,000as a yearling at the Goffs MillionSale in 2008, which in itself wasa great result for the stud. “He wasan April foal, so we thought he’dbe better as a three-year-old andhopefully that will prove correct.

The Coolmore team were stonemad about him at the sales andit worked out well for everyone.”

De Vere Hunt has strong faithin his methods. “We keep thehorses with sheep and cattle tomake sure the pastures remainin great condition and we use aseaweed fertiliser which containstrace elements,” he said. “Therolling hills here are great foryoung, developing horses andwith over 300 acres we have

space to keep the stocking ratedown.”

This season Garraun Stud willsend two yearlings to Newmarketand De Vere Hunt and Ronanhave high hopes. “We have anOratorio half-brother to CapeBlanco and he’s very similar inattitude; he does everything eas-ily, like his brother. We are also sell-ing a Footstepsinthesand half-sisterto Retainer. If either are as goodas their siblings we’ll be happy.”

Cape Blanco: “A fantastic foal” says breeder Des de Vere Hunt
