It’s a neat idea to help us think about transitions. There’s actually a lot of ways to work with the theory and many applications for it. One of the ways to think about third space is to think about where you are today, where you’d like to be in the future, and the third space, is the space in-between. The theory was actually formulated by a man in India named Homi K. Bhabha. And he came up with it while the English were colonizing India. For him, the first space was his native Indian culture. Second space, or the space what was coming at him, was the British culture. He knew that during colonization that there was going to be no way for him to maintain the old traditional identity. Things were changing, and therefore he would have to change in some way as well. However, totally giving up his heritage was also not an option. He was not going to embrace the colonizing culture in a way that left his identity no longer recognizable. So he came up with this idea of a third space. A hybrid. There were some good things, like technology, that the British brought with them that could help industry and productivity in his country, but he figured that there must be a way to embrace those things, while still not allowing his identity as Indian be consumed by an outside culture imposing itself on him and his people. A third space is a hybrid. It becomes a new identity, that is not entirely the first or the second identity, but a third that embraces the change and also maintains heritage. Sometimes a third space isn’t something entirely new, sometimes it’s the space of transition between what has been and what will be. Our culture is living in a third space. We have a pretty clear general sense these days that what used to work for us as a people, no longer works the way it used to. We know this when we talk about our everyday schedules. We know this when we talk about the way politics work…or don’t. We talk about the large-scale changes in our culture through the many cultural wars around science and social issues. So many people, often older generations, feel like they used to be able to count on certain things, and now they can’t. Of course the younger generations sense these changes too, just in a different timeframe. This feeling of the old not working anymore, but the new thing not here yet, is a third space. This is true of church, too. The church has had many identities and ways of being in the world, and is going through another transition. We all know that Sunday used to be safe from school activities, but isn’t any longer. Wednesdays too, but not now. This is just one example of how we need to find innovative ways to bring the gospel to life. More often than not we now need to go to where the people are, because they are not coming through the doors. We are not even coming through our doors the way we used to. How might we be church in ways that take the life-giving story that declares love wins outside the walls? Blessings for our transitions, Kyle

THIRD SPACEOne of the primary ideas that I learned and discussed in San Francisco a few week back was an idea called: Third space.

Blessings for our transitions,

Kyle

1. Be sure the church office has your current email address in your record. This email address must match the one you wish to use for your online (electronic) giving in order for it to work.2. Go to Access ACS using the following url: https://secure.accessacs.com/access/memberlogin.aspx?sn=1593983. Register as a new user. At the Account Sign Up screen, type in your E-mail address, First Name and Last Name and click Find Me. (Note: Sometimes entering your name can be trickier than it needs to be depending upon how you are identified in our database. The name has to match our database exactly. Call the office if you get stuck here.) 4. If your information matches, you will get a message indicating you have successfully set up a member account. A user name and password will be e-mailed to the e-mail address that is on file for you. You will need to remember your user name, but don’t worry about trying to memorize the obscure password ACS provides because you will be required to change it the first time you log in.5. Log back in with the user name and password provided. You will be prompted to change your password to something you can remember. The password you create should not contain your user name or e-mail, cannot include any of the following characters: < & > / \ ; % [space] ‘ “ and must contain both upper and lower case letters and two or more

numbers. It must be over 8 characters long. REMEMBER this user name and password, as you will need it any time you log in. You may wish to Bookmark this page for easy reference.6. Explore this page. You will see multiple hyperlinks that will allow you to edit or update your personal and family church records. We encourage you to keep all information current and correct. Take a look at what we have on file and update it as necessary.7. In the Giving Summary section, click on the Online Giving Setup tab to go in and set up a one-time or recurring donation. You will need to enter in your bank account information or credit or debit card information. This is a secure website. No one at the church will ever have access to this information after you enter it here. If you would like to set up a scheduled or recurring transaction, you select whether you would like it weekly or monthly. You decide when it should start. You decide how much it will be. You choose which fund or category it will go into. If you want it to go into the general offering, choose “Weekly/Pledged” for the fund. If you want to give a memorial, choose the fund it should go into and you will be able to enter in the memorial information as you would like it to read. When you are finished, finalize your entries and it’s all done.8. Any time you wish, you can look at your online giving history now without waiting for a contribution statement to arrive in the mail! Fast and easy!

If you discontinued your land line and went to a cell phone in the last several years and did not tell us, we don’t have any way to call you. We’ve been running into this a LOT lately! So please contact the church office to make sure we have your current and correct telephone numbers if you have only a cell phone in particular

FOOD FOR KIDS IN THE PARKST. STEPHENS “ TACO TUESDAY”

Thank you to the many volunteers who answered “the call” to provide “Taco Tuesday” lunches beginning June 14th at Stange’s Park on 3rd Street.

Also a special thank you for those who have donated SCRIP cards or cash donations for the purchase of food and the for the donation of coolers.

(Look for the donation jars around church on Sunday mornings.)

All volunteers for the “serving teams” will receive a schedule listing dates and information for the preparation and serving. Each Sunday before the serving date that team will meet for a short meeting after Sunday service.

There has been misunderstanding from a previous article in the Foto News regarding the lunches at Kate Goodrich School. This is only for the students enrolled in the Summer School Enrichment Program for two weeks.

Other churches providing food for the other four days are Our Saviors Church, Christ Methodist Church, Trinity Lutheran Church, and St. Johns Church.

Volunteers, you are a blessing!“Who doesn’t love a picnic in the park!”

Saint Stephens Youth Group is going on hiatus for the summer. That means no more Youth Group meetings until after school starts. Be sure to join us then when we will have an exciting new space ... our new Youth Room! And lots of exciting new plans for fun & activities for the coming program year. All the new 6th graders on up to high school seniors will be welcome.

BLESSING CLOSET NEEDS DONATIONSAt this time, the Blessing Closet is most in need of gently used men’s clothing and pants hangers.

Donations can be placed where the food pantry

bags are dropped off in the entry area. Please mark any bags of smaller items with the words “Blessing Closet Donation” so we do not get them confused with Food Pantry donations. Thank you for supporting this brand new ministry. - Shelly Burnett

A FOND FAREWELL ...After nearly 22 years serving Saint Stephens as the director of Christian Education and a much-beloved Sunday School teacher, Sue Catlin will be leaving her position on staff. Her last day in this role will be July 15, but we are lucky that Sue and her family are members of Saint Stephens, so we won’t have to miss her too much! We hope to still see her smiling face often! Please join us in thanking her for all of her years of service and dedication. When you see her, thank her in person! 22 years of Sunday School kids bears testimony that Sue had a lot of love to share ... sharing both her love for Jesus and her love for children with an entire generation. That’s pretty remarkable! Thank you, Sue!

THANK YOU SUE!

WE ARE IN NEED OF ...Clean, empty containers such as those from Cool Whip, cottage cheese, and deli purchases. If you have extra containers to donate, please bring them to the church office. Thank you!

JUNE 9 IS HEAT AWARENESS DAY IN WISCONSINGet educated about the signs and symptoms of heat stress and heat stroke. Take care of yourself! And don’t overdo it, especially when working & playing outdoors.

OUR CHURCH DIRECTORIES ARE HERE!At long last, the church directories have arrived! Stop in the office to pick up your copy. Copies will also be available after worship in the lounge.

COFFEE HOUR CONTINUES FOR THE SUMMER!Yes, Coffee Hours will continue through the summer. Even with only a 9:00 AM service, we want to enjoy fellowship with our church friends after the service. So stick around a little while and enjoy a hot cup of coffee and watch as the Kuck Lounge undergoes a transformationWe still need families and groups to host these Sunday morning Coffee Hours. Can you help? It’s easy! Bring in some treats, make coffee, set a few things up and do a small amount of clean up. In the past, a few families have decided to sponsor together. And church groups have also sponsored. It’s a fun way to spend a Sunday morning. Sign up in the Kuck lounge.

SUMMER OFFICE HOURSMonday - Thursday 8:00 AM - 3:30 PM Friday 8:00 AM - 1:00 PMWednesday Evening Worship continues at 5:45 PM every Wednesday evening; however, there is no a Bible Study during the summer months.

There’s been a lot of talk about online giving lately. But WHY should you give online? There are several great reasons and benefits to both you and Saint Stephens.

First, you can simplify your life by scheduling your giving online in advance. (You can also opt to give a one-time gift whenever you want instead of scheduling recurring giving.) You won’t have to write out checks or remember to bring envelopes to church. You won’t have to address an envelope or spend money on a stamp to send your donation to church on weekends you can’t attend. You won’t have to do a thing. Your donation will be processed automatically according to the amount and schedule you set up, and you can change it at any time.

For the church, online giving helps us better manage cash flow, even during seasons when attendance is down due to summer vacations and lots of activities. Just as your household incurs ongoing expenses throughout the year, the church has monthly bills we must pay. Online giving provides a more consistent, even cash flow that assures us we can keep those bills paid on time.

Several families in the congregation have already enrolled in online giving. They report it was simple and easy to do! See for yourself. Easy instructions are included on page 4.

Why Give Online?

Coming Soon ... Giving via Texting!(What will they think of next?!)

FEED YOUR SPIRIT . . .Heaven’s Praise

“Out of the mouths of infants and children your majesty is praised above the heavens.” - Psalm 8

At bedtime, there is always a struggle. As I watch my daughter climb the bed for the umpteenth time, dumbfounded at how she could muster the strength as she shouts “AGAIN!” there is often this moment when I wonder when the rest will come.

Then I remember and I say: “It’s time for prayers.”

She climbs up the bed one last time, puts herself in position, and waits.

“Now I lay me down to ____” (sleep! she shouts)

“I pray the Lord my soul to ___” (keep!)

“For all the good while I’m ____” (awake!)

“I pray that God my thanks will ____” (take!)

Be the change you want to see in the world. - Mahatma Gandhi

WANTED: We are looking for a few rather odd items for a project. Please call Tina in the office if you have any of the following you can donate:• Ornate metal crosses (that could hang on a wall)• Succulent plants (Not cactus)

Then, we start with the blessings. I list family members, caretakers, friends, the people she’s met throughout the day. As I say their names, she repeats them with an exclamation point, albeit with reduced gusto as the prayer continues. Eventually, we come to her favorite part: prayers of thanks. She says:

Thank you, God, banana store! (For her trips to the grocery store).

Thank you, God, racer! (For the stroller that carries her when she is tired).

Thank you, God, mama daddy!

Bedtime is the highlight of my day. My daughter consistently finds expressions of praise for God that would never occur to me.

Out of the mouths of babes we encounter this instinctual gift that even the youngest of children can have. They know how to be thankful, how to offer an unexpected word of praise, how to utter sincere gratitude to a God they meet in even the simplest of moments, even in a racer, even at a banana store.

In this simple nighttime ritual, our tiny, growing slice of heaven teaches us new facets of praise.

Prayer

Heaven and earth are full of your glory, O God. May we praise you with timbrels, gongs, clanging cymbals and even exclamation points, too. Amen.

NEVER leave a pet or child unattended in a hot car! Not even for just a few minutes. No matter the circumstance. Not even if the child is sleeping and you don’t want to wake them. Not even if the windows are down. More than 600 children have died that way in the U.S. since 1990. Think it can’t happen to you? Think again.

STRENGTHEN the CHURCH UCC MISSION OUTREACH

Please remember the STRENGTHEN the CHURCH offering, one of our United Church of Christ special 5 for 5 yearly mission outreach efforts of our National UCC Churches, as you plan your giving for this month.

This offering supports programs that will carry our churches into the future, including development and training for churches that seek to revitalize congregations and grow so the church will be there for our children and for our grandchildren. It assists new church beginnings where there is a need in new neighborhoods. It trains leaders in youth and young adults and pastors in leadership roles.

One half of our support stays right here in Wisconsin to assist and grow our congregations where there is need.

Offering envelopes are available again in church this Sunday, and bulletins will include brochures telling the stories of how we are investing in the future of our churches. To assist the office staff, please add your church envelope number to the special Strengthen the Church offering envelope when giving. Thank you! - Mission Team
