Ladies Evening on “SCIENCE AND HEALTH” was organized by the RSC-Deccan Section on 2nd September 2012 at Nagarjuna Nagar Community Hall, Hyderabad.

The aim of this special event for ladies is to bring awareness and importance of chemical sciences and in particular Chemistry in daily life. In this direction the RSC-DS invited two eminent lady speakers namely Dr (Mrs) Ch. Krishna Kumari (Retd. Prof.), Science writer and presenter in All India Radio on science topics and Dr (Mrs) Ambuja, MD DGO (Retd. Professor), Advisor on health related topics for ladies on all India Radio & TV.

Prof. Peesapati Hon. Secratary of the Deccan section welcomed the speakers, ladies and explained briefly RSC activities of Deccan Section. The aim of this special event for ladies is to bring awareness and importance of chemical sciences and in particular Chemistry in daily life. In this direction the RSC-DS invited two eminent lady speakers namely Dr (Mrs) Ch. Krishna Kumari (Retd. Prof.), Science writer and presenter in All India Radio on science topics and Dr (Mrs) Ambuja, MD DGO (Retd. Professor), Advisor on health related topics for ladies on all India Radio & TV.

Dr. Krishna Kumari spoke about “Kitchen Chemistry”- namely, food additives, preservatives, colouring matter, emulsions etc. used for the preparation and preservation of food items. She stressed the necessary and advantage of adding anti-oxidants, nutrients to the food items in order to prevent oxidation and to get balanced diet. She also mentioned the precautions one should take in preparing food items and avoiding some of the food stuffs containing the artificial flavours, synthetic colours, reusing cooking oil etc., which are harmful for general health.

Dr (Mrs) Ambuja spoke about “General Health Awareness for Women”. She gave an overview on various health related problems faced by the women and how to overcome by taking certain precautions along with the medical help. She spoke about different kinds of cancers and other frequent health problems faced by the ladies and steps to be taken to avoid them if possible or minimise the agony. She clarified many questions, doubts raised by the lady participants. It was a lively debate and all participants without reservation expressed their happiness in attending this highly educative & informative ladies evening arranged by RSC-DS.

“Dr Krishna Kumari has given good understanding about chemistry in our daily life. Dr Ambuja cleared whatever myths in my mind. Thanks to RSC-DS for arranging this program” Mrs Vidyavathi. “Dr Krishna Kumari’s lecture on kitchen chemistry is very exciting and informative and she explained in a simple language, easy to understand and quite useful” Mrs N Aruna. “Dr Krishna Kumari speech, tips and suggestions on kitchen chemistry is informative and useful for all of us. Dr Ambuja’s speech on clinical guidelines and health is very informative and highly useful to all the ladies. I am thankful to RSC-DS for arranging this seminar exclusively for ladies” Mrs Vijaya Mohan “The topics chosen are so apt for the ladies and that showed up in the active participation of each and every one including me. The interactive session was so casual and informative and the role chemistry involved in our day to day life” Dr (Mrs) Padmaja

Around 100 women participated in this special event. RSC-DS honoured the guest speakers. Refreshments were served to all the participants. The event photos along with a brief report of this program will be posted separately to RSC Network. Prof. V.Peesapati, Secretary, RSC-DS, Dr V J Rao, Dr P Sree Lakshmi, Mrs. Padmaja, Mrs. V. Lakshmi Peesapati organised this event. The event concluded with a dinner to speakers and the RSC-DS executive members to celebrate the role of chemistry in the kitchen.

This is another special IYC challenge event 2 conducted RSC-DS, India, exclusively arranged for general public in particular for ladies. It was appreciated by one and all. Once again we (RSC-DS Group), would like to convey our sincere thanks to Royal Society of Chemistry, London, UK. for the continuous support and encouragement to conduct these activities.
