The Harvard Medical School Department ofContinuing Education and the Departmentof Medicine at the Brigham and Woman’sHospital is offering a highly regarded, com-prehensive, nine-month course in acupunc-ture for physicians.

There is a growing interest among patientsand physicians in acupuncture as a thera-peutic modality. However physicians havelittle or no training in either the science orpractice of this treatment approach. Thisunique course provides practical, hands-ontraining in acupuncture. The training pro-gram is designed to bring together Easternand Western views of health and diseaseinto a results-oriented acupuncture style.Strong emphasis is placed on developing aneuroanatomical understanding of painmodulation with acupuncture. You will learnto evaluate and treat patients using modernJapanese acupuncture techniques that linkclassical Chinese theory to pragmatic diag-nostic and treatment methods.

The didactic portion of the course will focuson bridging the gap between acupuncturepractice and science. The scientific basis ofacupuncture and the methodological prob-lems with acupuncture research is present-ed as part of the discussion of specific clinical conditions throughout the course.Emphasis is placed on comparing and contrasting research protocols with actualclinical treatment methods. This ongoingscientific discussion will provide participantsthe tools to better lead future research andclinical endeavors in acupuncture.

To achieve the highest level of academicand clinical teaching excellence, we havebrought together distinguished members ofthe faculty from Harvard Medical School, the Ludwig-Maximilians University ofMunich in Germany and a leader in the fieldof Japanese acupuncture, David Euler, whois an internationally recognized Japaneseacupuncture practitioner and an expert intranslating the theoretical concepts dis-cussed in classic Chinese acupuncture textsinto a pragmatic treatment approach. Ourfaculty has taught acupuncture both in theUnited States and abroad for more than 15years, combining their theoretical knowl-edge and vast clinical and teaching experi-ence to provide our students with the high-est quality instruction.

Upon completion of thecourse, you will be able to:■ Integrate acupuncture

techniques for pain andother medical condi-tions into clinical prac-tice based on traditionalChinese theories asinterpreted by modernJapanese and Westernpractitioners.

■ Improve the quality ofclinical acupuncturethrough a detailedunderstanding of thebasis of acupunctureanalgesia and the cur-rent status of the scien-tific literature

■ Demonstrate knowledgeof the methodologicalproblems with acupunc-ture research with afocus on developing thetools to design optimalresearch protocols.
