Bathroom Furnishings, was held in Bologna, Italy from 28th September to 2nd October this year. The show attracted more than 101,000 visitors including industry professionals, journalists and consumers from all over the world.

The six product sectors showcased at Cersaie were represented by a total of 872 exhibitors at the show, including 319 foreign companies from 39 different countries such as Argentina, Japan, the UAE, the United States and several others.

The best represented sector is that of ceramic tiles with 491 companies (including 236 non-Italian), followed by bathroom furnishings with 226 participants.

As usual, the commercial side of the show was complemented by events catering to the world of architecture, interior design, installation and end consumers.

upmarket residential construction. It combines the puristic aesthetic of cement with the outstanding material properties of vilbostone porcelain stoneware. Xentric tiles have a typical cement look. This concept comprises two colour lines: one cool featuring cement-coloured grey and anthracite, the other warm with a contemporary brown and a soft beige tone.

Traces of rust are used as a stylistic feature in modern interior design and sculpture. For the new Metallic Illusion, vilbostone porcelain stoneware range this design idea was implemented in premium ceramic: rust colours run through a surface inspired by the basic structure of concrete – as if the passage of time had left a visible trace. The result is a vivid, used look with metallic effects. The large-format tiles are ideal for spacious interiors, particularly in apartments with a loft character or interiors in the popular industrial style. There are four colours: light grey, mid-grey and anthracite.

Just for Cersaie, Bisazza has restyled some of the most popular pieces from its Bagno line, signed by Nendo and by Jaime Hayon.

Next year’s collection is a combination of quirky and cool. Tom Dixon’s new collection of cement tiles is heavily inspired by his home city, London and features graphic and trompe-l’oeil patterns.

The tiles are available in two sizes: square 20x20, or hexagonal 20x23 cm. The 12 designs in this collection represent Dixon’s

Lissoni explored the new expressive potential of ceramic, transferring the spirit from tiling to the bathroom collection, developing an articulate offer with individual elements in glossy white ceramic.

He designed four sinks: in a suspended version or in a console version with front legs, of which two models feature a double sink. Among these was an original version which combines two basins in different sizes: big and mini.

The rectangular shapes are basic, with rounded rims; the washbasins are large and their tops are defined by the prominent contour s of the raised edges, while two

impressions of some of the British capital’s architectural landmarks.

Bricks of red clay, cracked pavements and pebble dash walls, are reworked in a graphic, pop art style to suit the simplicity demanded by the century-old tile manufacturing process.

By far the most intriguing collection is Studio Job’s ‘Perished’ in glass mosaic. This new mosaic creation in the Neogothic style by the Belgian design studio consists of a digitally created pattern made of 10x10 mm tiles. It is available in black and white and with Bisazza’s new rose gold mosaic tiles.

The duo explains, “We want to create a collection that is exclusive for the quality of the materials and techniques. Through the skeletons, violent and innocent, their direct graphic forms depict our times which are extravagant and violent.”

The newest additions to the line were the Meteors collection in opalescent and ir idescent glass and the eclectic Diamond collection, in which rhomboid tesserae were combined into visions of geometry at play, and even floral patterns evoking the very finest embroidery.

SicisThis year Sicis focused on the mosaics that have been at the heart of the company from the beginning. The stall had the air of an explosion of creativity with walls resembling paintings and original projects of three-dimensional mosaics in glass and minerals paste and other materials, with elegant and precious patterns.

Beautiful mosaic installations featuring a combination of both artistic and pixel-based techniques had a powerful impact. The most popular was a virtual bookcase in shades of grey but made spectacular with large inserts of ar t ist ic red flowers.

The Gold line, symbolising unadulterated luxury, was used for the Flamant artistic mosaic panel with gold-leaf slabs: a pond with canes of bamboo and a flock of flamingos, adorning a room

RAK CeramicsThe major draw at RAK Ceramics’ exhibit at Cersaie 2015 was its enormous Maximus Mega Slab – the latest in extra-large format slabs produced using SACMI Continua+ technology.

RAK Ceramics is one of the first manufacturers in the world to have installed Continua+ and the only manufacturer in the GCC to be producing such large format sizes. Available in four gigantic sizes (135x305cm, 120x240cm, 120x120cm and 29x240cm) and three thicknesses (14.5mm, 12.5mm and 6mm), RAK Ceramics showcased a range of Maximus Mega Slab collections at Cersaie.

They also showcased new models in Gres Porcelain including its Wood, Marble, Stone and Cement collections. And in Ceramic Tiles, the company launched the largest sizes available in the region (40x120cm, 30x100cm and 40x80cm).

Following the success of their Nature Side and Lodge concepts, Villeroy & Boch Tiles have now launched the Tuxedo floor concept made of vilbostone porcelain stoneware in a special elegant wood look. The look is inspired by luxurious hardwoods.

The new design features fine, long grains with few inclusions, just like carefully selected real wood. The colours range from light shades of grey to a bold dark brown and are evocative of

different formats, as well as in typical parquet patterns.

A more recent trend is that of graphic design: geometries and patterns designed to create personalised floors and walls with different laying patterns, with both visual and tactile 3D effects and a harmonious use of colour.

The aged urban/industrial trend features cements and woods with special graphic effects, often inspired by action painting, graffiti and even typography. An important role is played in this area by digital decoration, with its enormous potential for creative flexibility.

Among the most attractive collections displayed at Cersaie which uses this method is ABK’s Do Up Collection which makes innovative use of graffiti for a children’s bedroom wall and a watercolour inspired geisha portrait design for a wall.

thickness of the tile itself. The fashion for hexagonal formats (both small and large) is still popular, as are the extra-large formats (80 cm and over), while collections with different thicknesses are on the rise.

Danish architecture studio G jøde & Pov l s g a a rd Arkitekter has built The

Infinite Bridge, a sculpture created in relation to the international b i enna l e , Scu lp ture by the Sea 2015.

The bridge is located at the coastal landscape of the city of Aarhus in Denmark. This bridge, being circular, goes nowhere and never ends.

With a diameter of 60 meters, the bridge is placed half on the sea and half on the beach. On steel pillars drilled around two metres into the floor of the sea are placed 60 identical wooden elements.

There is also a historic angle to the bridge, which makes the experience of walking along it all the more enchanting. The site was a place where earlier people used to arrive in steamboats to enjoy themselves here,

and the bridge touches the landing dock of a previous pier which does not exist anymore.

Choudhary’s ceramic dinnerware call to mind the tranquil spontaneity of children’s books. The owner of the Delhi-based company, Airphish is heavily inspired by nature. “My illustrations are reflections of my emotional connect with the animal kingdom and the dreamscapes that I create in my mind while fantasising about a perfect world,” says Choudhary.

her ceramic creations as conversation starters – “What can be more positive than a talk about nature and art?” Working with dinnerware also gave her an opportunity to play around with three-dimensional forms and to see her art as something functional.

Airphish’s products extend beyond the quaint ceramics - with an art book, art prints and furnishings. Currently Choudhary is working with some printed textile-based products and is also exploring other domains besides home decor and furnishings. She doesn’t plan to stick to one medium or product category, preferring to explore different mediums for her sketches.

Choudhary grew up in Udaipur and had a love for drawing since childhood, eventually pursuing her ambition and graduating from the National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad as a graphic designer. Soon after, she started an independent design studio - Pinksoda, and worked on various branding, print design and digital illustration projects. But after years of sitting in front of a computer, she decided to return to her first love – drawing. Says Choudhary, “I started itching to draw again while I was pregnant in 2011. Airphish was born at the same time as my child.”

Choudhary doesn’t follow a fixed process when drawing these sketches. “Every sketch has its own story. Some start with a mere scribble, some start with a narrative in my head and other times something as simple as a conversation ignites a thought,” she says. Choudhary draws with fine pens and uses methods like stippling and hatching to create details and depth in her artworks.

This process can take anywhere from couple of hours to a couple of days, depending on the size and details. Once the artwork is ready, different compositions and sizes are explored, after which the illustration is scanned and screen printed on a decal which is then manually transferred on each piece. The tableware then goes for a final firing which heat sets the print and makes it permanent.

Ceramics caught Choudhary’s eye by chance. “It all started as a DIY project when I set my eyes on the plain white dinnerware in the kitchen. At that time I was experimenting a lot with illustrations and different surfaces. I was drawing on any white space I could find. My house walls and cupboards were not spared either,” she says.

According to her, for most people a dinner table is not only used for meals but also to come together as family or friends to spend time and connect with each other. She sees

She introduced cushion covers to her product range just last month in minimal black and white designs, with hand drawn detailed illustrations. The cushion covers work as a set, where two together complete a picture. She will be launching her new ceramic tableware collection by the end of this year. The theme will be revealed soon.

Khosla discusses with us the current scenario of the Indian lighting industry and why he feels Jaquar has an edge in this market.

Could you tell us about your business? Which brands do you represent?

This is a family business and I am the third generation handling it. We have been in this business since 1972 with tiles, sanitary ware and faucets. We started with three brands- Somany tiles, Hindware and Jaquar faucets, and other products like geysers.

But all those companies faded away with time and I shifted all my sanitary ware business to Jaquar as they gave me better service.

They have been associated with my showroom for more than 25 years.

Since I have been associated with their faucets for so long, I asked them if they could give me something in the lighting sector as well. So for the past five years I have been working with Jaquar lighting.

I have two kinds of business – one is Super Sanitary retail and the other is wholesale. Our wholesale business consists of a lot of sub dealers under us; who are recognised Jaquar dealers.

What are Jaquar’s strengths with respect to lighting?

Jaquar is selling on the concept of service only, because the design and products keep changing with fashion and requirement of the designer. One thing is constant around which everything else revolves – that is the service portfolio and regular R&D.

Every day there are up-gradations in Jaquar’s system. And they are 100% service oriented; there is not a single product in Jaquar’s portfolio that is not backed up with service. You are just a phone call away and the man will be there within a maximum 72 hours. He will measure how much ‘lux’ level of light is required, how many lumens,etc. He will talk on technical terms so that it will be a sensible buy.

Initially when we launched this business five years back, Jaqaur was only into expensive and high end lighting. They were more into tie ups with foreign brands like Artemide. But now we have quality for every segment and a huge

portfolio. If somebody is interested in lighting solutions we can easily give him beautiful, cost effective propositions and a good package with a complete lighting solution (CLS) from Jaquar.

Which brands in India are today making the best products in lighting? What is the market scenario with regard to lighting?

There are local players in the market from the unorganised sector who are trying to pitch a few LEDs but

back up line will never fail in the market.

Now that towns like Gurgaon are growing and developing, people have started demanding good life style products. I need to segregate when I’m selling.

There are people who want basic LEDs, which is a market resource that has been taken over by Chinese goods for the past five years.

It is only now, after Modiji’s ‘Make In India’ concept that people are now looking for brands which are made in India.

Brands like Oreva and Havells have started coming in this business but they do not have such a big portfolio. Either they’re just giving LEDs, or only outdoor or indoor, or they can’t do chandeliers.

In 2001 a lot of foreign brands came into the market but in five years they were all out of the market, because the kind of service that Jaquar offers, no brand can offer in India – whether it is a domestic or an international brand.

In India we don’t have skilled labour. So products that are supported by a strong service

Also they have done a lot of innovation in the lighting business and they give very cost effective propositions for LED lights, bulbs, commercial lights, etc. They also have multiple ranges as well. We have crystal lighting which is for people who are going for the luxury range, which uses Swarovski crystals.

The market is growing and people are getting aware - bulbs are out of fashion, CFL tubes are also being withdrawn, LED is the latest concept that is in. Now is the right time to expand ourselves.

What are the major trends in lighting that you have observed? What are home owners asking for in this segment?

LEDs – even a person who doesn’t understand design understands that he’s going to save some energy if he uses an LED.

People are asking for anything that holds an LED, irrespective of what brand you are selling. They only ask for the diameter and the price. They are not concerned about the lux levels, what is the area for which they are planning, etc.

So there is general awareness, but it is up to us to understand their need, shape it and identify what he requires.

We send a sales manager from Jaquar who will identify and then give them three options- most cost effective, mid segment and a niche/high end.

Even though this business has to be promoted through consultants, as a lot of technicalities go into it, we still have to speak to the end consumer.

Is there a significant premium/luxury lighting segment in India? What are their needs?

Yes, very much. But people are not aware; we have to make them understand the concept. Even today people go to Khan Market, burn their money for lighting and get nothing out of it.

If something breaks, or there’s damage, or something’s not working, there is zero service back up. So we work like a consultant,

give them some ideas and then we have solutions for those ideas. But if you aren’t able to give them an idea, then the need for a solution never arises.

In cities like ours, everyone has a budget of around five to seven lakhs for lighting when their construction cost is one crore.

So in that kind of area, allotting a budget of five lakhs for lighting is reasonable. People will not buy a light for 20 lakhs, but for three to four lakhs? Most definitely.

Some weeks back there were two walk-ins who saw a double height Jaquar chandelier with crystals. They saw the Jaquar brand name, the gold plating, the certificate of authenticity and that we were providing on-site service back up.

What makes carpet tiling a better option as compared to other flooring options?

Carpet tiles are available in squares of 50cm x 50cm and rectangular planks of 100cm x 25cm sizes. They are easy to install, with close dimensional tolerances so the joints are not visible and can be laid in several patterns. The main benefits of using carpet tiles are that work spaces are much quieter as sound gets deadened.

What is the current market preference for CPVC vis-à-vis traditional systems such as iron pipes? Has the shift happened completely or are there still some places using iron pipes?

In column pipes vertical, the shift

from the conventional iron pipes (Galvanised Iron or GI pipes) is almost complete, although there are still some pockets where GI pipes are being used. We aim to educate farmers and the mechanics to use column pipes for bore wells and it is a continuous process.

We have an all India sales team which is constantly on the job of educating the plumbers to switch over to PVC and CPVC for all their plumbing requirements but i t wi l l take some more time to convert all of them fully into using plastic pipes. In this segment, the width and depth of distribution is of utmost importance to increase volumes and to reach our products faster to our distribution partners.

With this collaboration, we are now in a position to offer our customers a bigger basket of products. Aliaxis is also providing us with the technology for manufacturing new products and we now have an edge in terms of training of our technical personnel in Aliaxis facilities in other countries.

Where would you like to see Ashirvad Pipes as a brand in the next 3 years?

We have set ourselves an exciting target of achieving a turnover of Rs. 3000 crore by 2018. Last year, in 2014-15 our turnover was over Rs. 1600 crore and we are looking at 20 per cent to 25 per cent growth YOY.

A lot of homework and hard work is going into this. It is a vision. But we love challenging ourselves. So we keep asking ourselves: How do we create India’s number one company in this segment? Can we stretch ourselves? Can we dream big? Because, unless you dream big, you cannot achieve big.

Training of personnel, both marketing and technical, and inc rea s ing our d i s t r ibu t ion network, is a high priority area with us. Through this, we intend to make Ashirvad Pipes the largest company in Plumbing, Sanitary and Drainage systems in India.

Of late, more and more p r o d u c t s a r e b e i n g invented that utilise and

harvest solar energy for multiple purposes. Whilst solar energy has been harvested before for uses such as heating and cooking, these products channel th i s energy to fuel devices and objects that are more contemporary in their usage.

Running On The SunA slew of products are drawing attention precisely because of the way they utilise solar energy for contemporary purposes, such as charging the cell phone. BY TASNEEM S. POCKETWALA

Dutch designer Marjan van Aubel has designed two such products. The Current Table designed by Aubel is a desk that works as a workstation and produces energy from natural light, which it then uses to charge small devices.

Its orange-coloured, glass top writing surface consists of a solar panel. Interestingly, its process of transferring energy to recharge gadgets is quite similar to photosynthesis. There is a dye-synthesised solar cell inside the glass panels. This solar cell makes use of the properties of colour to generate an electrical current – quite mimicking the process in

which plants use green chlorophyll to conver t natura l sunl ight into energy.

As a process, The Current Table works when small particles of titanium dioxide are placed on a piece of transparent glass which is then dyed orange. Sunlight is absorbed efficiently due to this technique of dyeing.

The table comes with two USB charging points that can be used to recharge cell phones and tablets. Thus, users can utilise the table for writing emails or reading books and simultaneously charge their laptops, phones and tabs.

The orange, pink and blue cells in the Current Window have varying wavelengths and therefore generate different energy levels. Onto the ledge of the windows USB ports are fused, so that the ledge provides a snug place for a small device such as a cell phone to charge.

There are a set of lit-up diagonal stripes near the charging point which indicate the amount of power stocked up in the battery. Depending upon the quality of the light and the season, the Current Window can generate up to 25 watts in a day.

Another of Aubel’s creations that harvests solar energy is the Current Window. The process is similar to The Current Table: the window is made from coloured solar cells that convert sunlight into electrical energy, enabling the charging of devices. The dye-sensitised solar cells are arranged in a zigzag pattern, a design that has been created by Aubel and graphic designer Marine Duroselle.

There is also a built-in docking system that allows for gadgets to snugly settle in on the desk, while a cord control secures fugitive cables with the help of magnets.

The design of the Pearl Academy of Fashion in Jaipur keeps the building 20 degrees cooler than the outer area

While the exterior is in sync with trends in contemporary design; at the base of the building is a vast pool of water - a cooling concept taken directly from the step well structures developed locally over 1,500 years ago to provide refuge from the desert heat. These ‘baoli’ (step wells) are bodies of water encased by a descending set of steps. This is based on the principle that when water evaporates in heat, it immediately

brings down the temperature of the space around it.

While traditional step wells often go many stories below ground level, the ones in the building go down just four meters. However, the effect is the same and the academy enjoys its own microclimate.

In addition to this the whole building is raised above the ground on pillars, creating an airy and shaded pavilion that is used as a recreation and exhibition space. Here the walls are made from a heat-absorbing material that creates a ‘thermal bank’- so the warmth is slowly released at night when the temperature drops.

The building is protected from the environment by a double skin which is derived from a traditional building element called the ‘jaali’ which is prevalent in Rajasthani architecture. The effect is decorative and also helps reduce heat. The double skin

acts as a thermal buffer between the building and the surroundings.

The density of the perforated outer skin has been derived using computational shadow analysis based on orientation. The outer skin sits four feet away from the building and reduces the direct heat gain through fenestrations, yet allows for diffused daylight. The jaali thus serves the function of three filters- air, light, and privacy.

T h e m a t e r i a l s u s e d f o r construction are a mix of local stone, steel, glass, and concrete; chosen keeping in mind the climatic needs of the region while retaining the progressive design intent. Maneka Sanjay Gandhi and People For Animals have organised a fundraiser for Wildlife SOS to support the Elephant Rescue Centre and the care of the rescued elephants. The fund raised from this event will be given to Wildlife SOS who also run the Elephant Conservation and Care Centre (ECCC) in Mathura.

Binoy Varghese and celebrities like Amitabh Bachchan and Shah Rukh Khan have painted fibreglass elephant statues which will be on display and sold at the exhibition.
