Blinn Police Chief To Be Guest Speaker
Charles Miller was named the new Police
Chief at Blinn College in March of this year.
Miller’s 17-year career began with the Walker
County Sheriff’s Office and the district attor-
ney’s office before he joined Houston Baptist
University (HBU) as an investigator in 2001. He
served 12 years there, including six as chief. As
head of the department, Miller was also in charge of HBU’s parking ser-
vices and fleet management.
“I really enjoyed my time at HBU,” Miller said. “It was my first experience
working in college law enforcement and it was very different from what I’d
been doing before, but it turned out to be the best career move I could have
made professionally and personally. I found out that I really enjoy interacting
with the cross section of people on campus.”
That enjoyment was reflected in the wealth of programming Miller’s de-
partment organized and/or participated in at HBU. Police participated in
student orientation, coordinated an anti-bullying campaign using Frisbees
to promote campus camaraderie and hosted hot dog cook-offs that al-
lowed officers to speak to students about basic campus safety.
(The next General Mtg is Monday, 10/14 at 7pm at the BPD)
State Park Police Officer, Heather
Jean Heatherly gave a very in-
formative presentation at last
month’s general meeting. Thank
you Ofc.

National Night Out
One of the many block parties held on Na-
tional Night Out (this one was hosted by CPAAA/COP members Megan Jackson, Hel-en Jordan, and Mollye Gray). Chris Jackson
gave tours of his Patrol Car and he even gave rides through the neighborhood; that was a
Big Hit!

Thanks to the following COPs for their help at the Home Depot Fingerprinting Assignment on Saturday Oc-
tober 5th: Rob Aguilar, Ron Wise, Annette Tiemann, Millie Keller, Tex Davis, Clyde Averitt, Jean Lu-
era, Clarence Steinfeld. We only printed 25 children, but spoke with countless adults about our program,
networked with the Fire Department, Sheriffs Department and Home Depot officials. All in all a good days
work; and plenty of fun too!
Our old friend Jay Petrash was trying to get our COPs to defect
to the Fire Department.

THANK YOU! National Night Out 2013
By Rob Aguilar
National Night Out 2013 was a big success; at least that’s what I was hearing as I attended the block par-
ties. There were many positive comments on the “Mardi Gras” theme that we chose this year. That also
made for some different and delicious snack choices; and I did sample quite a few. Many nice things were
said about our group and the Police Department in general. There were even a few comments on our new
uniforms. And there were lots of questions about our Citizens Police Academy and the COP program; per-
haps we’ll garner some recruits from these parties?
The BPD had a great turn-out (as is usual) and I would like to take this time to thank everyone for their
participation. Firstly, Thank You to the three BPD Chaplains that accompanied us that night: Randy Wells,
Johnnie Williams, and Calvin Kossie; and a special thanks to Randy Wells for the Blessing he bestowed be-
fore our departure. Secondly, a Big Thanks to the BPD Officers that chauffeured us around and were great
ambassadors for our Department: Lt. Trey Gully, Lt. Billy Rich, Sgt. Todd Jacobs, Det. John Snowden, Cpl.
Chris Jackson, Officer Seth Klehm and his K-9 partner Ronnie. And a special treat, Chief Rex Phelps was
also out there with us and he was accompanied by District Attorney Julie Renken. Lastly, Thanks to all of
the COPs, while this was not our largest group outing, we had a great showing: Nicole Lowe, Annette Tie-
mann, Rob Aguilar, Wanda Aguilar, Bernadette Kamprath, Albert Green, Scott Boll, Jean Winters, Jean Lu-
era, Peace Wilson, Travis Boeker, Clyde Averitt, Dustin Brown, David Clinkenbeard, Patty Goerlitz, Chuck
Wood and Catharine Wood. We also had Cpl. Joe Merkley “flipping burgers” at the Housing Authority
block party; do I sue Joe or the Housing Authority for the food poisoning? Just kidding Joe, Great Job!
Lest we not forget the County Units and County COPs that were spreading their brand of PR through-
out Washington County. And I would be remiss if I did not mention that we had two of our COPs : Clar-
ence Steinfeld and Tim Horak riding with the BFD that night. I guess that they preferred a $700,000 vehicle
to our used patrol cars? (they just heard that we were very well staffed and BFD needed to fill more seats) I
hope I didn’t leave anybody out, my memory is not what it used to be. National Night Out is an excellent
opportunity to introduce neighbors to each other and to the public servants that are there for them all year
round. Putting a face to the service and answering any lingering questions that may foster a more cordial
experience in the future.
Again, Thank You to everyone that went out and represented the Brenham Police Department. As al-
ways, you put us in a great light, helped educate the public, got to positively interact with our communities’
youth, and had a good time doing it; not to mention the great food. That sounds like a great evening to me.
I look forward to next year, and the next opportunity to make every encounter with the public a positive
one. I know you do too!

A A M
By Rob Aguilar
I recently attended a planning meeting for the Adam’s Angels Ministry (A A M) 5-K Dash. We (BPD,
Sheriff’s Office, County COPs, Road Dept, and COPs) were meeting with the Coordinator/ Chairperson for
the event, Donna Culliver. We had all the aspects of the event ironed out, and everyone knew what their
role would be Saturday, October 5th. The meeting was over and all that remained were the pleasantries to
be exchanged by the participants. Chris Jackson and I were chatting with Mrs. Culliver; she began gushing
and singing the praises of BPD Officer Lance Weiss. Her remarks were so positive and so sincere; I felt
pride in just knowing Lance and getting to work with him. Chris chimed in and reinforced her remarks with
more positive remarks about Lance. It was a love fest, and Officer Weiss was the subject of all that affec-
tion; his ears must have been burning by that point.
Officer Weiss is a strong supporter of the Adam’s Angels 5-K Dash, and the A A M in general. Lance
took it upon himself to organize a fundraiser for A A M. In conjunction with the Fire Department, of which
he is a member (YES, Lance is a firefighter as well as a police officer),he organized a “fill the boot” campaign
to assist A A M. However, he did this at the very last minute and did not get the help that he needed from
his fellow firefighters, myself included (I was out of town that Saturday). He gave us two days notice and it
was opening weekend for the Dove Hunting Season. Needless to say his only immediate help came from
fellow firefighter and COP Clarence Steinfeld. These two worked the intersection of Alamo and Austin for
a few hours until BPD Officers Casey Thumann and Seth Kehlm arrived to give them a hand. Well after be-
ing out there some four to five hours, they called it a day. Lance and company raised $1603; and Donna
Culliver and the A A M could not be happier. I’d sing your praises too, if you had raised that kind of money
for me. No, but seriously, that was dedication and hard work for a very worthy cause; FANTASTIC JOB
GUYS!
I kind of wondered why Lance and Clarence would have stayed out that long for A A M; and what was
A A M? Being semi-new to this community the only thing I knew about Adam’s Angels was that they have a
Christmas Toy Drive every year and a 5-K Dash. Well that isn’t even the tip of the proverbial iceberg; they
do so much more. I did some research and now I fully understand why Lance thinks so highly of that organi-
zation. In a nut shell Adam’s Angels Ministry is called to provide care and comfort through physical, emo-
tional, financial and spiritual support for families dealing with a child that has cancer. They do this through
home visits, hospital visits, outreach programs, fundraisers, special events, toy drives, counseling, financial
support, prayers, and the list goes on.

AAM - Cont’d
The Adam’s Angels Ministry story, while tragic, is inspiring and is giving hope to countless families that are
struggling to cope with a child stricken with cancer. The organization was founded in 2004 by Tim and Don-
na Culliver, who lost their young, four year old son Adam Christian Culliver to Acute Myelogenous Leuke-
mia in January of 2003. I urge each of you to read all about A A M by going to their website : adamsan-
gelsministry.org .
Well the Adam’s Angels 5-K Dash is this Saturday October 5th at Hohlt Park, I hope you can come by and
cheer on all the runners; especially those from BPD. Chris said that he will run and possibly the Chief too;
and we know Lance will be there giving it his all. Just a warning to the other runners, Lance will be hard to
beat; after all, according to Donna Culliver, he has “angel wings”!!
CONGRATULATIONS!!
