We will also be ordering orchid plants from Kawamoto Orchids again this year, which will be passed

out at the party. We need to know how many plants to order (one plant per membership), so please

RSVP to Wilma Tawagon by December 15 and let her know how many are in your party and if you will

be bringing an appetizer, salad/vegetable, main dish, or dessert.

Come prepared for good food, fun times, and friends. We hope to see you there!


Orchid Sales

George Hatfield, owner of Hatfield Orchids will be selling cymbidiums at Yamada Company (706 W. Gardena Blvd., Gardena) from September to June. The sale will be on Saturdays from 10 AM to 1 PM. Potting demonstrations will be held at 11 AM. Cultural advise will be available for anyone who has problems with their plants. If you think your plants may be virused, bring a cutting of the leaf in a plastic bag and it can be tested for $5.00 per test.

December President’s Message

Gosh, is it really December? I just got started with my July potting. Oh well, there is next year. Dec. 19th is our annual Christmas Potluck, a fun time for all. For the new members it’s a time to get better acquainted with other members and for others it’s time to talk about kids, animals, and health problems. Thinking of older people wouldn’t it be great if some of our old members that we haven’t seen for awhile for various reasons could come. Ex presidents and their wives, like Don Smith, Jim Weiss, John Jaacks, Ned Patten, Marc Better, and Eeva Renger. It would be great seeing you again. Call Wilma and let us know. If anyone can think of any other old members that have dropped out, give them a call and invite them back. Once again here is a reminder that we will auction off the OrchidWiz Express Program at the holiday potluck. Go to their web site (www.orchidwiz.com) and download their demo and see if you would like it. The money bid goes to our society. If you can’t make it to the potluck and would like to make a bid just call me. Biding will start at $50.00. Once again every member family will receive one plant (Cattleya) that is being shipped from Hawaii for the party. You must have signed up in advance, so one will be ordered for you. You must be in attendance, sorry, none for guests. Looking ahead, be sure and plan on being at our January meeting. The speaker will be George Hatfield, who will talk on cymbidiums. He is one of our best speakers. He is full of knowledge and presents it so everyone will understand and benefit greatly. He provides a great plant table and will be selling flowering plants that can be winners. If you miss this one you’ll be sorry. As the Party Host, I’m hoping to see a great turn out. And to everybody, I’d like to wish you all a very Happy and Merry Christmas and a Happy and Safe New Year. Bob Streeter

Patricia “Pat” Rowland: May 15, 1923-August 31, 2014 Sadly, we recently lost our orchid friend, mentor and a remarkable woman, Patricia ‘Pat’ Rowland at the age of 91. Pat passed away in her sleep on August 31, 2014. An OC native, Pat was born on May 15, 1923, in Huntington Beach. In 1943 she married Lee Rowland. The orchid bug first bit Lee and their son, Bud, but Pat was soon to follow. Thus began the Rowland Collection. They were responsible for numerous early hybrids of miniature cymbidiums, many of which were awarded. Hybrids with other orchid genera were next with more awards to follow. Through it all Pat continued with her other creative passions. She painted, made jewelry and pottery and other art throughout her life. In 1979 Pat and Lee joined a small group of about 10 orchid enthusiasts to create the Newport Harbor Orchid Society, and at the very first meeting 300+ eager orchidists showed up. Soon the society split into the NHOS and the Orange County Cymbidium Society, which soon became a branch of the Cymbidium Society of America. This November 2014 is the 35th anniversary for both societies. In 1980 the first cymbidium society show was held. Pat became an accredited judge for both the American Orchid Society and the Cymbidium Society of America. She taught many of us budding orchidists the ins and outs of ribbon judging and when buying a new orchid, the qualities to look for as well as proper culture. She shared her knowledge very freely and we all benefited greatly from it. Pat was known, loved, and revered throughout the world of orchids. We have lost a great lady. Lynn Wiand
