Smoker ReviewMessing with success is sometimes risky, but moving to a largervenue to better accommodate the continuous growth of thesignature fundraising event of the Independent Sports Clubturned out to the be a huge hit.One of our regular attendees referred to this event as “thetoughest ticket in town” and it certainly was. A record crowd ofmore than 300 people filled The Warehouse on State on Sept.28th for the ISC Smoker. The 21st annual event featured specialguests John Groce, head coach of the University of Illinoismen’s basketball team and Bradley University men’s basketballcoach Brian Wardle. The feedback on the new venue – a trendy banquet facility thatwas designed by current ISC president Geoff Smith, an architectwho also designed the adjacent Thyme Kitchen and Craft Beer– was overwhelmingly positive. More space for better crowdflow, improved acoustics, delicious food provided by CrackedPepper Catering and easier access to plentiful tasty beverageswere among the many factors guests mentioned that contributedto a great evening of camaraderie and fundraising in the nameof youth sports.

The event was a hit, of course, thanks to the presence of ourfeatured guests, coaches Groce and Wardle. Both menentertained the crowd with their insights, anecdotes, observations and predictions on the upcoming season. Witheach team returning a strong nucleus of experienced playersfrom last season, both coaches expect improvement from the2015-16 campaign.Journal Star sportswriters Kirk Wessler and Dave Reynoldsonce again emceed the event, asking questions of the coachesand working the room with microphones to allow ISC membersto do the same. The opportunity for a fan to ask questions of aDivision-I head coach in a public-but-off-the-record setting isjust one of the reasons that make this special event unique incentral Illinois. And just as the coaches and media were generous with theirtime, ISC members and their guests were generous with theirwallet. ISC board member Bob Joseph did a great job of selling

bundles of 50/50 and raffle tickets at the door. This resulted ina 50/50 prize so big, the committee decided to award threewinners in the amount of $800, $400 and $200.The ISC Smoker committee of Jeff Doeden, Rich Moore, BillyKing and David Hunt once again put in many hours ofteamwork to ensure the success of our marquee event. Whilerevenue and expenses were still being tabulated, Doeden isconfident this year was the most successful in the event’s 21-year history.“The committee was pleased with all changes,” said Doeden, who led the move from our former location to The Warehouseon State.Special thanks to the corporate sponsors and private donors whohelp support and underwrite this first-class event. They includeBradley University, the University of Illinois, Royal Publishing,Baumgarten Distributing, OSF Orthopedics, Fortner InsuranceAgency, Scott Communications Services, Burdess &Associates, Pepperidge Farms, Prairie Home Alliance, LawOffice of David Hunt and KB Elliott Financial Advisors. Also a big thank you to Bradley alumnus Derek Oddo ofGainlight Studios ([email protected]), who provided groupphotos with the coaches for our VIP tables and provided thepictures in this newsletter.

Bradley University men’s basketball coach Brian Wardle, left, and Uni-versity of Illinois men’s basketball head coach John Groce, right, an-swer questions from the audience.
