PHOTOGRAPHY AND IMAGING SEPTEMBER 2009

I now have a gallery in Miami, Avant Gallery, 3850 N. Miami Ave., representing my 'painted architecture' and I'm having a showing of about 20 images, starting Sept. 12 in Miami at Avant. In the fall, one of my TWA photographs will be enlarged up to 10 feet tall and exhibited at the TWA Terminal #5 as part of an exhibit there. I photographed the terminal for the restoration architects Beyer Blinder Belle and for The Library of Congress in 2004-5. My shoot was the last official photographic record of the terminal; 40 Years Later, and just before they started demolition of the unnecessary aux. buildings around and attached to the main terminal. Terminal 5 is now the Jet Blue terminal. I'm also working on producing a coffee table book of some of the 300 photos I have of TWA. It's architect, Eero Saarinen, will have an exhibit at the Museumof the City of NY starting Nov.12 '09 including TWA photos. For more information, contact Peter Brandt at www.PeterBrandt.com

Images by Photographer and PAI member, Erika Stone, are included in the exhibition FUNNY PICTURES at the Zabriskie Gallery on 57th Street and Madison until September 4. She also has two pictures in the show, PHOTOGRAPHY AND IMAGING at the Weill-Cornell Medical Library, which will run until September 26. Erika's web site can be found at ERIKASTONE.COM. In March 2010, Edwin Bobrow will have a one man show at the Works Gallery, 1250 Madison Ave. (between 89 & 90th Sts.) NYC.Several of his photographs are also presently on display at Belvidere Castle in Central Park (see a Bobrow image in this issue's Gallery) Did you know the 59th Street Bridge is 100 years old? Do you know that New York City is celebrating its centennial? Part of that celebration includes an exhibit at Gallery RIVAA and the Roosevelt Island Historical Society featuring a photo by PAI's Richard Bachmann. The selected photo for the exhibit is part of an ongoing series of night images of NYC. Richard Bachmann's photo, “59th Street Bridge”, has been selected and will be featured in an exhibit celebrating the Centennial Anniversary of the Queensboro Bridge. The May 31st opening reception was a part of several festivities, including fireworks, planned by the City of New York for the Anniversary Celebration. An active PAI Board member and club Treasurer, Rich has been a professional photographer for over 20 years and is currently working from his studio in LIC Queens. The “Queensboro Bridge at 100” exhibit is on display at Gallery RIVAA through June 28 Avenue and 60th Street. 2009 and is co-sponsored by Gallery RIVAA and the Roosevelt Island Historical Society. Gallery RIVAA is located at 527 Main Street, Roosevelt Island, NY, Hours: Saturday and Sunday 11am-pm, Wednesday and Friday 6pm-9pm.

Tom (aka T. Neal) Flournoy has two photo portraits hanging in the Salmagundi Club galleries through Sept. 11th, one upstairs, one downstairs next to the pool tables. Also scheduled for inclusion in Cynthia Dantzic's new book to appear shortly...”

Len Speier reports that he was most recently represented in the Black & White Competition by the Center for Fine Arts Photography, Fort Collins, CO. “Two photos were accepted (Skaters, Beijing, China and VW Bug, New York City). These prints will be hung from August 26 through September. The Texas Photographic Society has also accepted 'Skaters, Beijing' for their 18th Annual Competition. The print will travel with all the finalists for a year, starting September. Earlier this year, the TPS's Annual Members Competition accepted the venerable 'VW Bug, New York City' for exhibition. As previously noted, I won the Manuel Alvarez Bravo Award for the International Competition entitled “Glimpses in Time” by the Joyce Gordon Gallery, Oakland, CA. The winner was /Skaters, Beijing, China', also accepted and exhibited is 'Hooded Figure in Snow”' The show was extended to August 28, 2009.”.

From a letter received this month from PAI member Jacqueline L. Van Sertima. Due to space limitations, we were obliged to edit some of the letter's text; however, we believe that its full content will be of considerable interest to our members, and we are therefore pleased to offer a web site that will f i l l i n m a n y o f t h e b l a n k s : www.journalofafricancivilizations.com

My husband, Dr. Ivan Van Sertima, and I traveled everywhere together, and so when we attended PAI luncheons and

exhibitions, we did as we always did-we worked as a team to discuss the work, the presentations, and PAI's possibilities for the future. So, while he was not an official member, nor a photographer, he enjoyed his immersion into our world and was as interested in the success, the camaraderie and the delightful interaction of our members as I was (…) He was a literary artist (poet) in addition to his many other accomplishments and I was the visual artist. My specialty is fine art - Hand-painted black and white photography. Dr. Ivan Van Sertima, world-renown author, anthropologist, linguist, poet and literary critic passed away on May 25, 2009. He was a Rutgers Professor for over 30 years, Visiting Professor at Princeton University and guest lecturer at more than 100 universities within the United States and beyond. His address before Congress and at the Smithsonian Institution marked two of his most outstanding public presentations. His memorial service will be held on the Rutgers Campus, New Brunswick on Sept. 12th.

Wednesday, 6PM, September 30th at the National Arts Club, 15 Gramercy Park South ... opening reception for an exhibit by PAI Board President, Bob Sharpe. Through his photographs, Bob shows us an ever-changing tableau of America in his exhibit, entitled "Escalator." Unlike the runways of the fashion world, the subway escalator is everyone's "runway." High fasion and low, rich and poor, young and old, they flow down the moving steps in an unending stream.

Howard Greenberg Sept. SpeakerRenowned Photo Dealer and Historian, Boasts Huge Collection

Howard Greenberg, owner of the New York City-based Howard Greenberg Gallery on 57th Street, is one of the world's top photography dealers. He is an authority on 19th and 20th century photography, and has been an acknowledged leader in establishing its value on the

fine art market. Employing his keen eye for artistic value and a unique historical perspective, Greenberg has built a reputation for rediscovering significant photographers from the past and establishing a market for their work. He represents and exhibits photographs by many of the acknowledged masters, including Alfred Stieglitz, Edward Weston, Eugene Atget, Walker Evans, Brassai, and Henri Cartier-Bresson. Greenberg also represents the estates of Edward Steichen, Imogen Cunningham, Andre Kertesz, Roman Vishniac and others. His collection exceeds 20,000 prints. Greenberg began his career as a photojournalist when he moved from Brooklyn to Woodstock, New York in 1972. Prominent newspapers and magazines such as The New York Times, The Washington Post and The Woodstock Times published his work. It will be interesting to hear from someone who has achieved success on both sides of the fence -- photographer and gallery owner.
