The Imagine Bus Project
ANNUAL REPORT2014 2015
- TIBP Youth Participant
Through arts education and community partnerships, The Imagine Bus Project engages and inspires incarcerated youth, and youth impacted by the juvenile justice system. We enable self-expression and positive personal development, so that young people can successfully re-enter their communities and find a path to a fulfilling future.
OUR MISSION & VISION
Juvenile Justice system-entangled youth are able to express themselves creatively and healthfully, take risks safely, and plan for a fulfilling, positive future.
Involvement in the Juvenile Justice system is an opportunity for personal reflection, transformation, and growth for adjudicated young people.
Our program model demonstrating achievement of healthy self-expression, improved personal development, a positive future orientation and, can be replicated or adapted to reach more system-involved youth.
– TIBP Youth Participant from Sonoma Juvenile Hall
We are pleased to report that FY 2014-2015 was an extraordinary year for The Imagine Bus Project, and our focused efforts to provide transformative arts experiences for teens impacted by the juvenile justice system. Young people who get entangled in the system have lost hope. Thanks to the unwavering support of our Board of Directors, Advisory Board, and donors,we are able to provide the mentors and role models in our Teaching Artists and quality art supplies that enable youth to create art work and ideas that help them develop a positive future orientation and a path to a fulfilling future. The Imagine Bus Project is proving that Art works! Last year, we reached a record number of system-involved youth, and raised over $190,000 from our fundraising events, expanded our program into San Mateo County, developed an all-star roster of 10 part-time Teaching Artists, and are currently in the next phase of a disciplined approach to evaluating our programs. We are thrilled to share an annual report filled with so much success and accomplishment. It is with persistence, perseverance, and passion that our program is gaining momentum to positively impact the lives of those we touch.

OUR PROGRAMS
Youth Studio is an introduction to art and design fundamentals, for incarcerated youth inside juvenile detention facilities. By introducing art materials, techniques, and the creative process in a formal large group setting, youth are exposed to positive methods for expression and communication.
Creative Futures is a continuation of Youth Studio, for post-incarcerated youth residing in transitional residential settings. This program builds on art and design fundamentals, by providing a deeper exploration into art and design thinking. Youth are introduced to a broader range of art materials and ideas, with the opportunity to work independently and collaboratively in a small group setting for personal growth and emotional development.

Hip Hop Jacket Project postcard, designed by Malia Jenkins.
"The Hip Hop Jacket Project" is a series of hand-painted denim jackets that utilized the jackets as a painting canvas, led by Teaching Artists Senay Dennis, Duane Deterville, and Dawood Marion. Textile design themes included love, justice, cultural roots, historical figures who represent justice and who are symbols of cultural pride and self-determination. 6 collaborative denim jackets were on display at the SF Juvenile Hall’s multi-purpose room, where youth in all units joined for a celebration.

Contact is a window into the hearts and minds of youth that society all too frequently pushes to the periphery. Youth from Los Guilicos Juvenile Hall created a series of personal audio recordings and original artwork in response to the prompt, “What Would You Say, if the Whole World Was Listening?” Under the creative direction of Nate Henry-Silva, the audio and visual responses were exhibited and celebrated with a reception at Riverfront Art Gallery, Petaluma, CA in April 2015.

TIBP LAUNCHES INTO SAN MATEO YOUTH SERVICES CENTER
Artwork by TIBP youth from San Mateo Youth Services Center.
In March 2015, we officially launched Youth Studio at the San Mateo Youth Services Center. We welcomed two extraordinary Teaching Artists, Kevin Juan and Mauricio Ramirez to lead the young men of the long-term therapeutic unit on a creative journey.
With a growing showing of community support, our classes have brought students in San Mateo county an outlet for self-expression. The artwork is a stunning example of young minds, working with great enthusiasm and focus.

It was an epic night, for those of you who joined us during the storm of the century, and came out in support of our mission to view and buy artwork. We were honored to have San Francisco Public Defender, Jeff Adachi join us on stage acknowledging how our programs are dedicated to helping youth impacted by the juvenile justice system.
We also enjoyed a very special live performance by Holly Muñoz who sang an original wings-themed piece. And, Zio Ziegler and Tyler MacNiven provided a grand finale to our amazing evening!
