Dear Parents, Students and Staff
The College Musical ―Knock on Wood‖
was an excellent show which involved
every primary student, and over 80
secondary students from Year 7 – 11. The
production ran over two days with 2
matinee performances and 2 evening
performances. Our primary students
displayed their talents with the pre-show
street performances at the back of the
hall before a lantern parade with the
overture to the main show being played
by the band. The main show was an
extravaganza of acting, singing, dancing
and music with an underlying message of
social justice. I must congratulate all of the
students involved; the talent of our
students never ceases to amaze me.
A production like this does not just
happen; it takes hard work and
dedication. Of the 80 staff members at
LCCC I cannot think of one who has not
helped to make the musical a success. I
must, however, mention 4 staff members
who have been working on the musical
since about this time last year; Emma
Hibbert not only directed but also wrote
the show. It was her vision, dedication and
leadership that made it possible. The
professionalism of our musicians and
singers was the result of months of
practice under the guidance of our two
very talented music teachers Joe Fragnito
and Cindy Dibley. The lights, sound,
staging and computer images were all
due to the technical and musical talents
of Scott Lipsham. On behalf of the entire
College community I thank Emma, Joe,
Cindy and Scott for a job well done.
On a different note, I need to alert you to the
following: Attendance at school is a legal
requirement under the NSW Government
Education Act. As parents and care givers you
are required to ensure that your students
attend school. If, for unforeseen reasons such
as sickness, a funeral or pressing domestic
necessity a student cannot attend school you
are required to supply the College with a note
explaining the absence.
If you know in advance that your child will be
away for an extended period of time you
need to apply for this by filling out an
‗Application for Exemption from Attendance at
School‘ form (these forms are available on the
College website and from PC teachers and
House Coordinators). Exemptions from school
may be granted for reasons including:
exceptional domestic circumstances including
but not limited to participation in family
holidays during school term, health reasons
and participation in elite sporting events.
Completed forms are to be returned to PC
teachers. If an exemption is granted, a
‗Certificate for Exemption from Attendance at
School‘ will be issued by the Principal.
May you recognise God‘s blessing in your daily
lives.

Thank you to everyone involved in the Lumen Day
celebrations. Fr James‘ homily reminded us that,
like the apostles who were transformed by their
experiences with Jesus, the students‘ time at
Lumen Christi will transform them, giving them a
greater appreciation of God‘s love for everyone.
The reflection song, ―He lives in you‖ reinforced this
belief, as did the College song, ―Shine your Light‖
which was performed with such enthusiasm by
Years 4, 5 and 6.

Be the Light of Christ
A strong contingent of 50 very eager
athletes embarked on the Archdiocesan
athletics carnival in Canberra on the 15
August. With a lot of wet, cold, windy
and miserable thoughts left fresh in the
minds of last year’s competitors, we
were lucky enough to be blessed with
clear sunny skies this year. This made
the day very enjoyable and successful for
many of the LCCC students. With the
largest squad of athletes from any
College in the Archdiocese it was
fantastic to see the blue and red
scattered across all the events. The
effort and performance of all the
students was outstanding with everyone
“Shining Their Light” and embracing the
competitive spirit to do the College
proud. The results kept on flowing
throughout the day with Lumen taking out
over 20 First places, 30 Seconds and 15
Thirds. We had a record 12 students
qualify for the Canberra / Goulburn
Archdiocesan team to compete in Sydney
on the 13 September. They are:
Liam Beazley
Callum Bedingfield
Oliver Bradley
Casey Cook
Rosie Gibbs
Thomas Robertson
Cooper Salisbury
Manuel Tessari
Stephen Thresher
Samantha Tondering
Hamish Wenczel
Emily Hocking
We wish all these students the best at
Homebush and congratulations to all
students who attended the Archdiocesan
Carnival.
A special mention to our 3 Primary students
who made it past regionals to compete in
Canberra as well. Personal best throws,
jumps and times were made by all and
congratulations to Amy Wels who qualified
for the CCC Athletics in Sydney for Discus.
The College wishes her all the best.
A huge thank you to the students,
parents and fami ly who
supported the celebrations held
last week as Lumen Christi
celebrated Book Week.
The Book Fair was very well
supported and ‗Booktique‘ from
Merimbula supplied a diverse
range of books for the students to
purchase from.
A percentage of the sales will be
used to purchase books for the
library.
The Book Character Parade saw a
range of stunning looking characters
arrive at school. The children looked
fantastic, as did the staff, as we
celebrated the love of reading, the
enjoyment of sharing a book
together and appreciating the
talents of authors and illustrators
everywhere.

are even paid under $2 a day. The
speech Mrs Mockler gave made
us realize just how privileged we
are and helped us to differentiate
needs and wants.
Mr Giles then spoke to us about
social justice mostly through the
use of some Johnny Cash tunes,
but the message was clear that
putting others above yourself is
rewarding in more ways than one.
After lunch we watched a video
―Breathe‖ that inspired us to
believe God is always around us,
and that the ancient scriptures in
many languages and religions
suggest that the word of breath is
the word of Lord. Father James
then led us in a Liturgy and told us
about his background and how
our life will progress through joyfully
if we choose to make a positive
mark on earth rather than a
negative one. Mrs Reckord sang a
beautiful song ―Galilee‖ in perfect
pitch and so the day concluded
with reassurance that we are a
step closer to our senior years at
Lumen Christi. The motivational
speeches at the Retreat
awakened us to the reality that life
is what we make of it.

Year Ten Retreat
Year Eleven Positive Psychology Course
On Friday 16 August, Year Ten
students walked down to the
Pambula Surf Life Saving Club for
their Retreat Day. All throughout
the day we were reminded of the
responsibilities, the challenges
and the decisions that would
soon come to face us. The day
started off with a prayer; allowing
us to stop and reflect on what has
been happening for us the past
couple of weeks and to ask for
guidance and strength as we
come into what may be the most
important years of our young
lifetime.
This was then followed by
activities that asked us to consider
the qualities of a "typical year 10
student" at our school. This
encouraged us to be more
analytical in relation to our
position among the rest of year,
and whether we are proud of the
descriptions that we each fit
under. After this we had a talk
from a very inspiring man, Mick
Brosnan. He travels to Papua
New Guinea four times a year
and devotes as much time to the
organisation "WeCare" in support
of education and human welfare.
This organisation also encourages
the people to learn English
among the country's other 800
native languages. This visit from Mick
played a huge part in the Retreat
Day being so pensive and profound
for our youthful minds.
After our recess break time, we were
split into groups of girls and boys. The
girls went off into meditation and
relaxation of the mind, which in my
group was led by Mrs Reckord, who
is trained in Positive Psychology. We
all were able to blank out on and off
and occasionally trail our thoughts
back to the sun seeping into our
clothes with warmth or the wind that
would occasionally sweep across
our backs. The meditation may just
have been my favourite experience
of the day. The boys were led by Mr
Rodda in a lesson learning the
cultural significance of the
didgeridoo and how to play it.
My group then headed back up to
the club house and Mrs Mockler
gave us a talk about how to
ethically commit to reasonable
purchases, and to further discover
what life is like for the people who
make all of our everyday goods. The
money usually goes to the
corporations and not to the people
who actually provide the service
and work all the long hours, some
These Year Ten boys were led by Mr Rodda in a lesson
learning the cultural significance of the didgeridoo
and how to play it.
A very enthusiastic group of Year Elevens‘ has been meeting for the last three weeks to learn about the princi-
ples of Positive Psychology and how to become more resilient thinkers. The skills learnt will hopefully put them in
good stead for their impending HSC year of study. For those students who have been unable to attend Tues-
day afternoons, we will be offering the same course once a fortnight in the ALL lesson.
A number of parents expressed an interest in attending an information evening in order to advance their own
understanding of this exciting new field of study, and so we cordially invite any interested parents be in attend-
ance at the school on Tuesday, September 10, at 7pm.
Be the Light of Christ
performances went off without a hitch, were well received and highly engaging. The students are really looking forward to presenting their work at the showcase evening on 12 September along with the HSC Music and Visual Arts students.
HSC DRAMA
It was a nerve racking week in the creative arts department with HSC Drama students presenting their major performances to Board of Studies Markers. The HSC Drama course has a large practical component, with students creating a completely original, self devised
piece of theatre and completing a major individual project. Many students choose performance as their major project so have to create and perform a solo performance of between 6-8 minutes. T h e p e r f o r m a n c e e x a m i s a stressful and emotional experience for Drama students but this year all
Right: Ellen Simonson, Kate Smith, Ellen Harvey, Olivia McPherson and Georgia May-er present a tense moment in their play 'A Powerful Struggle'.
Left: Eureka Dadd, Bella Gillions and Lisa Forbriger search for romance in their play 'Lucky in Love'.

Students praised for stellar performance of ―Knock on Wood‖
Students from Lumen Christi
Catholic College received universal
acclaim from audiences as they
performed their College production
'Knock on Wood' last week. Sell out
crowds were amazed at the quality
of the music, acting and dancing as
well as the shows strong social
message. 'It was incredible', said
one audience member. 'I expected
to be impressed by the talent of the
students but this show also made me
stop and think about my own life -
an exceptional achievement for a
high school production.'
The musical was a ―whole College‖
production with many students,
families, staff and members of the
school community working together
to make it a huge success.
Special congratulations must go
the student cast and crew, and
in particular Mrs Emma Hibbert,
Mrs Cindy Dibley, Mr Scott
Lipsham and Mr Joe Fragnito
who spent many hours preparing
and guiding our students,

Be the Light of Christ
Over the past few years Scott Gardiner has been one of the highest ranking boys for his age in Australia. At age
12, he represented Pambula Primary School and won the title of best player then went on to represent the South
Coast, Far South Coast, Country Tennis and NSW State Nationally, at the Bruce Cup Tournament in ACT winning
the Bronze Trophy.
During 2011 he competed at the Sydney Olympic Park Homebush Arena prior to the International tournament
and then to Melbourne before the Australian Open Tournament to compete in the Summer Nationals. Both of
these events are considered quite an honour to play in.
In 2011/2012 he represented South East Region Academy of Sport where he was sponsored by Essential Energy.
Early in 2012 Scott snapped his crucial ligament, fracturing his knee which put him out of tennis for the rest of the
year.
He then played in the Foundation Cup in Sydney Olympic Park in January 2013 as one of a team of 4 representing
Country Tennis in NSW. Our team NSW, went on to win the event and trophy with all players presented on Centre
Court by Ken Rosewell. From there Scott has tried hard to get back to the level he was at before injury. Then
followed a week of training at Wollongong with Callum Beale, during a talent search day.
This year Scott has won his age group in Foster, Bathurst, Newcastle, Canberra, Wollongong and is this week going
to Parkes and then onto Canberra before he plays in the Junior Nationals once again in Sydney in September.
Throughout the year he participates with his brother Peter, in many regional tournaments up and down the south
coast. Once a month a group of approx 20-30 boys in each age group get together for a full day of tennis in
various areas e.g. Moruya, Batemans Bay, Ulladulla, Bega, Nowra, Wollongong, and Bowral. These boys then play
against each other to determine the winner and this year both Scott and Peter won their respective divisions.
Quite an honour for us as parents to have this happen for both boys in the same year. Because of this both boys
have now been invited to compete against other regional areas in
Richmond at the end of October.
Scott's plan in life is to hopefully one day play at a top level making
tennis his career, hoping to make it on the professional circuit. This all
involves quite a lot of travel, but it has all paid off and hopefully Scott
can continue with this in the future.
As mentioned his brother Peter has also had his share of achievements.
He has achieved recognition in his own right at a local level, as well as
reaching finals in country area championships and becoming Champion
of Champions as mentioned above. During this year he has won District
Champion and local Merimbula Club Champion in both the Junior and
Senior section all in the same year. His name has now been entered on
the Club's Honour Board for his achievement. Something he can come
back and show his own children in years to come.
We are proud of both our boys and hope to give them every opportunity
to follow their dreams in the future. Debbie and Peter Gardiner.

It has come to the attention of the
College and school bus drivers
that some parents are dropping
their child/ren off on Pambula
Beach Road— near the skate
park and on the grassy verge
outside the music drama rooms.
This practice is extremely
dangerous and has caused
several near misses as school
buses enter the designated bus
parking area at the College in the
morning.
We have also noticed that parents
are dropping their child/ren off on
the College grounds near the sign
that states ‗No student drop off or
pickup on College grounds‘.
Again, this is a dangerous practice
as car parks are busy places at this
time of the morning.
For the safety of all of our students,
we are requesting that parents/
carers drop their child/ren off in the
drop off zone in Culgoa Crescent
(at the front of the College near the
water tank) or the car park in the
Pambula sporting complex.
Utilising the suggested drop off
arrangements in Culgoa Crescent
or the car park in Pambula sporting
complex may take a little more time
and effort but well worth the piece
of mind knowing your child will
arrive safely at College each day.
Important drop-off arrangements for your child/ren
