Blogging is becoming more and more popular in the classroom. Teachers can blog to stay in touch with parents and students or they can incorporate blogs from all of the students as a learning tool. The beauty of the student blog is that children from early years to high school can blog. No matter how you use blogs in your classroom, these tools will help you get started, enhance your experience, or bring the students into the fun. Beware of the blogging disease

Most bloggers that we know all have at least one blogging vice. For me, I am compulsively checking blog stats. Others constantly tweak template designs, obsess over plugins and widgets, spend hour after hour ‘networking’ on Twitter, allow ourselves to become consumed by learning about blogging…. and not do much of it. The reality is that as bloggers there are many tasks that compete for attention. Many of them are important and can bring a lot of life to our blogs but most of them can also become distractions and counter productive to blogging. If you are going to blog, it is important to focus on the most important aspect of blogging – creating content. Don’t get me wrong – the tasks mentioned above can all be important and as bloggers we need to approach our blogging in a holistic kind of way – but the truth is that a blog can certainly be improved if more time is spent on the creation of quality content. A blogger’s challenge is to refocus my energies on creating compelling and useful content. That’s what it all boils down to if you’re looking to improve your blog.

the popular students.

3. Make reading and writing blogs a priority.

4. Give specific ideas on what to post but allow extra postings and creativity.

How to Install WordpressWordpress is one of the most popular blogging software applications that are freely available. Installation is simple and quick. Follow these short steps to install the application on to your school internet siteAssumptions: You have a domain name, have organised hosting and understand how to transfer files to and from a host using FTP.I will be creating a blog called www.thinkingcopy.com which will deal with copywriting issues.

1. Check that your domain name has propagated by entering it into a browser. It should respond with a page saying “index of /” and possibly some mention of CGI and FTP (every host is different). Domain names sometimes take 2 days after purchase to be recognised by the web.

2. Creating local folders. Create a set of folders to hold the new site, themes and plugins as per the image to the right. Leave the Site folder empty as we will be filling it in shortly. This will provide you with an ongoing structure for modifica-tion and backup. This is important as recently there have been a large number of Wordpress sites hacked.Tip: Unlike Microsoft and Apple, Unix filenames are case sensitive. “My.txt” and “my.txt” are two different files.

3. Download Wordpress. Fire up the browser of your choice and point it at www.wordpress.org Download the current version of Wordpress into the Backups folder. Once this is complete unzip the download into the Site folder.

4. Create the project.txt fileIt is time to create the memory aid file called project.txt for this site and save it in the Project folder. This file is a lifesaver in 6 months when you have forgotten all the details of the site. Using Notepad, create a txt file to contain passwords etc. Where possible use copy and paste to reduce errors. You will need to record the following as they become known:

5. Create the MySQL databaseTo create a MySql database you will need to login to the cPanel of your host and select “MySql Databases”. cPanel versions vary but it will look something like the icon to the left.

Enter the lower case database name in the “Create database” form and commit. After acceptance your database name will appear in the

“Current databases” section of the page.Enter the full name used in your project.txt file and save (in this case choswom_thinkingcopy). Note some hosts add a security name to the left of the given name. The addition to the name is part of the name.

Now create a user for the database. I suggest that you use the default of “admin”. Use the “generate password” option and set the length to an odd number greater than ten. This makes the password harder to crack. Record the full user id and password in your project.txt file and save.

Now you will need to add the user to the database. This is usually the last prompt on the page. Grant yourself all privileges. You will need them.

6. Edit the Wordpress ConfigurationThe next step is to configure Wordpress. The file wp-config-sample.php is the template for the wp-config.php file. You will find this in the Site folder. Using Notepad or some other text editor open the file and make the following changes. By the way, Notepad can edit any text based file if you change the file type to “All files” in the Open file dialog box.Now we need to tell Wordpress the name of the database, the user id and password. You will see lots of text and slashes around strings like “define(‘DB_NAME’, ‘putyourdbnamehere’);” at about line 19.Replace the “putyourdbnamehere” with the database name entered in the project.txt file.Use copy and paste – it is easier and more accurate.Continue and replace “usernamehere” and “yourpasswordhere”. Keep the single quotes intact!Enter the Authentication keys.The best way is to use the Wordpress servicehttps://api.wordpress.org/secret-key/1.1/ as displayed in the blue box. Copy the four lines of text presented and paste them over the template lines.The next step is to define the Table Prefix. The default is “wp_” which everybody knows. Make it a little more difficult for hackers by changing this to something unusual like “xo_”. Record this in your project.txt file and save.

Save the wp-config-sample.php file as “wp-config.php” in the site folder.

7. Create .httaccess file and uploads folderCreate a file called “.htaccess” in the Site folder. The file name contains a dot then “htaccess” The easy way to do this is to use Notepad. Remember to set the file type to “All files” as you save it.Create a folder named “wp-” followed by your domain name less the com or com.au. Mine would be “wp-thinkingcopy”. In this folder create another folder called “uploads” all lower case.

8. Upload to the HostWe have done most of the setup. It is time to upload the contents of the “Site” folder into “public-html” on the server using FTP. This should not take long.Using the Permissions (CHMOD) facility of the FTP software, change the permissions for the .htaccess file to 777 and the uploads folder to 777. This is temporary and will allow Wordpress admin to access them during setup.

9. First LoginNow the moment of truth. On your browser, enter your domain name followed by “/wp-admin”. In my case that would be www.thinkingcopy.com/wp-admin If you are presented with an error screen check the login and password or the database details as directed. Correct then refresh the screen by F5 to try again. You will be presented with a welcome screen soliciting the name of the blog and the administrator’s email.Enter them then click on the Install Wordpress button to be led to a new login screen.It is IMPORTANT to copy the password displayed.

You will need it in a moment.

You will now be presented with the standard Wordpress login screen. Enter your user id and password from the previous screen.When you are presented with the Wordpress dashboard, select the link at the top of the page to go to “my profile page”.Failing that you may access the screen via the “Your Profile” option in the “Users” menu. At the bottom of the profile page you may enter your new password and confirm it. Enter the new password into your project.txt file and save.

10. Some More SettingsWe will move the “uploads” directory from the default to our wp-domain folder created in step 8. I do this to totally separate code which changes when upgraded and our uploaded images etc.Choose the Miscellaneous item in the Settings menu and change the location of the “uploads” folder.Unless you are using a very large number of images, uncheck the month/year option to save you hunting through many folders for a file.All Done!

11. Congratulations - Wordpress is Now Installed!

How to Install a Widget to Customise WordpressWidgets perform a myriad of functions from listing contents to displaying purchases from a shopping cart. The majority of Wordpress sites have a content column and either one or two sidebars for other content or navigation. The beauty of Wordpress is its flexibility. I will demonstrate this with a site partly developed.Here the page has only a search box on the right.

How do we do this?The theme used for the site has numerous different

sidebars. This allows the flexibility to have a different configuration for each page set.The image to the right shows 3 sidebars with widgets. The first is only a search box, the second shows a list of pages for the Copywriting section, the third shows both a search box and a list of pages for Web Services section.The current version of Wordpress has a drag and drop interface for widgets.To add or remove a widget from a sidebar, you drag the widget either on or off the sidebar.

There are two main widgets used here, Search and Flexi pages. To add them to their respective sidebars, they were dragged from their red garage to the left into the sidebars to the right as shown by the blue lines.When docked a widget often opens and accepts configuration information such as the heading and a list of pages to show.Many widgets are the visible part of a plugin. About twelve are loaded with Wordpress as a starter kit.To add more look in the plugins area of wordpress.org/extend/plugins At the time of writing the site boasted some 7,277 plugins, 61,367,605 downloads, and counting. Choose your plugin, download to your computer, expand the zip file and upload the expanded folder into the wp-content/plugins folder. Open the Plugins / installed menu item and activate the plugin. It will either appear as part of the menu at the left of the admin page or in the widgets list.Good hunting!

Murray Bridge High School

This professional site uses image transitions on its homepage to give visitors a good idea of the calibre of extracurricular activities offered at the school. While some basic information is missing, including upcoming events and school hours, there is an impressive virtual tour and a contact page that uses Google maps and a user-friendly email contact form. Overall, the site is up to date, includes a number of newsletters and other news items that are somewhat current. The site is full of content with photos that keep readers entertained while they browse.

Devonport High School

While on first glance, the site looks fresh and professional, the main page image transitions bog down the loading time of the home page. In fact, many of the images on the site load very slowly and they are a distraction for visitors searching for information. Once the photos load, however, the site give visitors a good idea of what the school is about. The site lacks updated newsy items, and the most recent newsletter is months out of date. That being said, the site does contain useful information about the curriculum and facilities, as well as contact information that’s easily accessible.

James Sheahan Catholic High

School

This site has a clean, refreshing feel, with a vast amount of current information for visitors, including up to date information about exams and flu season. It also has an interactive assessment and study guide for students and a login for teachers. The contact page lists basic information, along with the names of the school’s teachers.The site’s only downfall is that it lists too much information, and the amount of text can cause the reader to lose interest. Some important information - including admission fees – is also hidden deep into the site, causing parents to dig for something that should be easy to find.

Eppalock Primary School

This site appears to be a low priority for the school. On the main page, there are many features that promote social interaction on the site, including a blogroll and a link to recent posts and comments, but none of these features are in use. The administration does make a note that the site is a work in progress, but with the last update taking place more than six months ago, it appears no work has taken place in some time. While some links are active, they contain no written content, let alone images. The site does show potential – if it’s completed. At this point, it’s difficult to tell what the school is about.

Teachers are using web sites like Teachers Pay Teachers and We Are Teachers to cash in on a commodity that was often shared for nothing with

colleagues, by selling lesson plans online for exercises as simple as M&M sorting and as sophisticated as Shakespeare. Some of this extra money is going to buy books and classroom supplies, but the extra funds are also used to spend on dinners out, mortgage payments, credit card bills, holiday travel and home renovation, raising questions over who owns material developed for public school classrooms.

Not AppropriateA school employee lost his job after leaving a comment on the website of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch newspaper. After the school employee responded to the newspaper’s poll of ‘the strangest thing you’ve ever eaten’ with a feline-inspired vulgarity, Kurt Greenbaum, the site’s director of social media, tracked down the commenter’s identity through his IP address and reported him to school officials. When confronted, the school employee resigned from his job.”

My SchoolMySchool will be a very important site in the coming years. This will be where school data will be accessed to check NAPLAN scores for comparison against “like-school groups”. PDFs with screen shots are available at the moment. Data will be entered in 2010.

average performance of all schools inAustralia and statistically similar schools. These are schools similar statistically to theschool on display and they may be located anywhere in Australia• search for ‘local’ or nearby schools to the school displayed, with hyperlinks to the profile page of that school• identify schools that are doing well and share successful strategies.

All but over for Handwriting?Some students at the University of Tasmania have just completed their exam questions for their third year education subject using laptops and presenting their answers on a USB stick or CD-ROM, not hard copy.This is believe to be the first time in Australian tertiary education that students have been allowed to use their own computers in this way.A small Hobart company, Open Technology Solutions, devised software, called eExam, to do the job.Students can bring their own computer into the exam but the software sets up a sealed environment: no access to email, web surfing or notes on the hard drive.

Netbooks v LaptopsNetbooks are more likely to fail within the first year than their more expensive laptop brethren, according to new research. SquareTrade, an independent US warranty provider, analysed the failure rates of more than 30,000 laptops covered by its own warranties. It found that 5.8% of netbooks malfunctioned within the first year, compared to 4.7% for regular laptops and 4.2% for premium laptops costing more than $1,000. The research also raises question marks over the legendary reliability of Macs. Three PC manufacturers — Asus, Toshiba, and Sony — boasted better reliability rates than Apple. Macs have a 17.4% malfunction rate over three years, compared to market-leader Asus, which has a 15.6% failure rate. HP was the worst of the nine PC vendors listed, with a malfunction rate of 25.6% over three years.”
