Connections of Arts to others

•Similar to Christian icons such as Jesus and how he is displayed in churches and sanctuaries by stages of his death on each window.

•Both iconic images are placed on windows of churches but are shown and displayed differently. For Russian icons they are shown as different people or events that were important and are shown on the windows.

•Artist would gain the ideas of art creation from famous Czars that performed unthinkable actions such as Ivan, Alexander,Nicholas or an event in a Czars rein that appealed to the artist as a perfect image for creation such as Ivan’s takeover of Kazan.

Differences

•Russian iconic art are not focused on one person. The icons are focusing on important places, events that the artists find to be beautiful.

•Vladimir was also famous for creating the icon of the virgin of Vladimir, which was imported to kiev from Byzantium prior to 1155.

Artists cont.•Another famous Russian Artists is a

woman by the name of Tatiana Vartanova.

•She was raised without a religion. The books, the furniture - but especially the icons, those vivid inlaid paintings of Jesus Christ, the Virgin Mary or the saints - held a mystical attraction.

• "The Annunciation” was a famous iconic painting that she created that portrays Jesus and the virgin mary being together

Technique•The word “icon” is a greek one meaning image

or reflection on something beautiful.

•Artists believed that a drawing or painting of an icon must have a representation of a holy personages, saints or scenes from the scriptures. The political and social views is that the icons provided people to live off the icons and art. The icons made people to believe in the symbolism and what it teaches people.

•Although Jesus and Christian figures were attractions to artists, they would focus on figures of Russia such as the Czar, Events of Russia and Saints.

How were the icons drawn

•The icons were fist drawn on plan wood which had to be carefully chosen, well seasoned and prepared. The thickness and size of the wood depended on the purpose of the icon and how the Artist wished to present the art.
