Dear Members,

I have the pleasure of presenting our first newsletter for the year 2018-19, sharing the narratives of events, activities and achievements during the past five months and plans ahead.

I am quite delighted to inform you that ICAI UAE (Dubai) Chapter has been

awarded the “Best Chapter Overseas Award for 2018”. We became the best in the world, sixth time in a row, ever since ICAI has instituted this award.

Congratulations to the energetic managing committees of current and previous years, guiding past chairmen, valued members, speakers and sponsors who played their roles to achieve this continuing glory. Thanks to the parent ICAI and its leaders for the excellent support.

The year 2019 has been declared by the Government of UAE as the Year of Tolerance. It upholds the great value that UAE stands for and brings comfort and security for the residents of UAE.

“The more you learn, the more you earn”. We have been organizing events with innovative topics which includes, an Extraordinary leadership summit, a well-attended session on AI & Robotics, an awareness event on VAT, a Banking summit, seminar on International Taxation, Contract reviews, Investment seminar, Session on IFRS, M&A, restructuring and valuation followed by a Review of Indian Union budget with Zee TV.

The Overseas office of ICAI in Dubai organized the Certificate Course on IFRS and VAT during the period. Also the first Executive Programme on Blockchain was hosted by them in Dubai during the month of January 2019.

Other Versatile activities include an interesting study tour to Baku, a thrilling sports and cricket carnival, an enthralling fusion musical show where great talents of India had played. On the year of Zayed, Dubai Chapter paid tribute to His Highness Sheikh Zayed, with performances by Delhi Private School. Diabetic walk, a session on yoga and walk for education were our CSR activities in the period. We also partnered with Ibaadat foundation in organizing an imaginary poetic world of Hasrat Jaipuri: Ibaadat E Shahensha e Ruumaniyath which had been well received.

We are moving through an overall change, either in manufacturing, trading, logistics, healthcare and other services which affects accounting profession too. Government offices in Dubai are in the fore front of innovation, reducing the time for processing, providing transparency and efficiency. 80% of the tasks will be done in 20minutes. We stand with the UAE government in all of their initiatives.

New initiatives and update on its progress• Job portal work is in progress• System modification activates are on for providing better service• Committees have been formed to explore and arrive at the solutions for the practice related issues and new requirements of UAE CPE for audit license holders• Revisiting the electoral system is in process to assess the need for any improvements

On March 2nd, we will have an entrepreneurial journey – Startup Summit, where we will hear and learn inspirational stories of young entrepreneurs who have made their fortunes.

On March 16th, we will celebrate international women’s day, where we celebrate women coming forward in all spheres of life. The fabulous Annual Social event will be held in Zabeel Park on 22 March 2019.

Our mega flagship event, Annual conference will be held on April 19 and 20, at Le Meridian Hotel and Convention Centre, Airport Road, with the theme, “Accelerating Millennium Strides-Transforming by power of knowledge” I solicit your valuable support to make the event a grand success. The detailed information on the event will follow soon.

We will hold events in Fintech, Cyber Security, Expo 2020 Opportunities, Blockchain, Insolvency with many more topics of your interest.

It is our pledge that the Chapter will continuously enlighten our members and uphold the noble value of our profession all the way forward.

The newly elected committee under the chairmanship of CA Mahmood Bangara, visited the Consul General Shri Vipul and updated him on the forthcoming events that the chapter wishes to hold. They also requested his support in getting recognition for the CA degree, which

the consul general agreed to support wholeheartedly. The consul general placed on record the excellent work being done by ICAI (Dubai) Chapter NPIO for its members, the Indian diaspora and the society at large.

The Managing Committee held a press conference in Crowne Plaza, wherein the Chairman shared with the press the vision for the chapter and the grand activities planned for 2018-19 with specific emphasis on technology, increased knowledge based events which will help us members to stay abreast with the latest happening in the professional field of taxation, banking, IFRS etc,at the same time catering to events for families too.

PRESS CONFERENCEHe stated that in the Year of Sheikh Zayed, let us pay tribute to the great rulers and people of UAE for giving us enormous opportunities to prosper. He also urged all to follow the light and path of Mahatma Gandhi, as the world is pouring admiration on his 150th birth anniversary. He lauded and respected his predecessors for laying their bricks for the chapter in the past 36 years.

The Chief Minister of Kerala Pinarayi Vijayan on an official visit to the UAE to seek funds to rebuild the flood hit state of Kerala. The Managing Committee visited the

CM at Grand Hyatt expressing their solidarity to the people of Kerala and our chairman on a personal front donated funds to the CM fund.

Rahul Shivshankar, Editor in Chief of Times Now, drew upon his decades of experience to discuss the role of media in driving economy. “The role of media is similar to that of chartered accountants; both of us act as auditors,” he said, adding “The existence of diverse avenues beyond the formal structure has forced mainstream media to dig deeper and hold the government machinery accountable,” Shivshankar added.

CA Keki M Mistry, Vice Chairman & CEO of HDFC, said “Today’s CFO has to don many hats, and needs to have strong skills of communication and investor relations. In these volatile time,” added Mistry.

In his chairman’s address, CA Mahmood Bangara spoke about the 3000 member strong Dubai chapter of ICAI, which is the largest of the 32 chapters operating outside India. He discussed the changing dynamics of the profession, describing it as that of an ‘Accounting Scientist’ who brings fortune to the entire community.

ICAI (Dubai) Chapter NPIO under the leadership of its current chairman Mahmood Bangara conducted a very relevant and need of the hour technical event on Artificial Intelligence and Robotics-From Illusion to Reality on Saturday 27th October 2018 at Hyatt Regency Dubai Creek Heights, Dubai which was attended by over 900 of its members.

The event was graced by Abdul Qader Obaid Ali, CEO, Smart World, who delivered the key note address said by 12/12/2021 all Dubai government will be paperless. He mentioned that various advancements and inventions had simplified our lives. CA Kamlesh Vikamsey, Past President ICAI & Chairperson of External Audit Committee of IMF also addressed the members. This event brought together some leaders in the field of AI and Robotics from various renowned companies like Deloitte, Ernst & Young, Oracle and IBM.

Chief Guest H.E. Dr Mansoor Al Awar, Chancellor of Hamdan Bin Mohammed Smart University, spoke to a spellbound audience about the breakthrough concept of a ‘smart university’ that he had conceived and implemented successfully.

In his short address, H.E. Shri Vipul, Consul General of India to Dubai, congratulated the new managing committee of the ICAI for bringing together an esteemed panel of speakers at very short notice.A panel discussion titled ‘Ease of Doing Business in India’ witnessed panelists Keki Mistry, Samina Vaziralli,Mahmood Bangara speak about how India has evolved into a more investor-friendly nation over the past few years. Moderated by Rahul Shivshankar, the panel had an extremely optimistic view of the future.

Ritesh Agarwal 24 year old founder of OYO Rooms, shared the story of his stupendous success to an enthralled audience. Sharing the ethos behind his venture as well as the wisdom he gleaned from the experience.

Lokendra B Rawat, Account based Engagement Leader for ECEMEA, Oracle.

Rajeev Lalwani, gave an analogy of the movement from agriculture to industrial economy, and predicted that by 2030, 400 m people will get displaced, with the current sets of technology 50% of the job will be automated which is equivalent to $15 t . AI and automation will impacts jobs not work. There is a huge opportunity as though manual tasks will be taken away by machines, our work will shift towards applying expertise/judgement, interacting with stakeholders, managing and developing people.

Akshay Lamba, stated that we are witnessing a 4th revolution. He spoke about the various recent technologies likes Drones, advanced imaging systems, Blockchain, robotics, AI and Cognitive computing as being used effectively in various industries and are changing the way we do work. Robotic process automation is being used to handle all repetitive process like bank reconciliation, invoice entry, financial analysis and month end closing Khurram Siddique, mentioned the reduction in time to process 150 invoices from a couple of days to 3 hours and various other efficiencies due to use BOTS in all these processes. Anand Subramanian mentioned about the importance of data, which powers Artifical Intelligence.

Gopal Sharma spoke about the necessity of looking at complete cycles while implementing various new technologies like Bots so the benefits are met, instead of causing confusion and cost associated with correcting wrong implementation of technologies.

Lokendra B Rawat stated that Organizations need to transform to stay ahead, he demonstrated various examples of how Robotics and AI would make the life of senior leaders like CFO and CEO easier.

Touching the Heart and Soul – Fusion Musical Extravaganza at Crowne Plaza Deira, Dubai. This event was attended by members and their spouses, wherein the Legends of India performed an exhilarating musical extravaganza. Great diverse talents presented an exceptional and enjoyable musical show. The event was dedicated to the renowned violinist Bala Bhaskar, who was scheduled to perform at the chapter but due to a cruel fate unfortunately died in a road accident on October 2nd. The event was graced by His Excellency Dr. Eesa Al Bastaki, President, University of Dubai, Chairman Emirates Science Club. He spoke about India and UAE relationships and demonstrated a first hand experience of India having spent quite a

The chapter participated in the Beat Diabetes Walk organized by Landmark group to spread awareness on Diabetes and encourage all to live a healthy lifestyle by taking these steps-Eat Healthy and Get Active.

The event was held at Zabeel Park and the members and families had a great healthy time enjoying the good weather, the huge turnaround and the festive atmosphere. There were lot of activities for children and free testing of diabetes.

ANNUAL SPORTS CARNIVAL - 21ST DECEMBER, 2018ICAI Annual Sports Carnival 2018-19 was conducted on 21-Dec-18, Friday at United Pro Sports, Al Quoz. The carnival began at 9 AM with the upbeats of dhol and cheering family members in the background.

Approximately 250 members participated in different games ranging from cricket, badminton and table

tennis. In parallel, fun activities like penalty shoot outs, dance and freeze, spoon and ball and many more were conducted for kids and family members who joined us for the carnival. The games were concluded by 5 PM followed by presentation ceremony to facilitate the winners and runners up of the game.

SHAHENSHAH-E-RUUMAANIYATA MUSICAL DRAMA -11TH JANUARY, 2019

ICAI (Dubai) Chapter NPIO in association with Ibaadat Foundation held “Shahenshah-e-Ruumaaniyat” a musical drama celebrating the life and lyrics of the King of Romance Hasrat Jaipuri at Sheikh Rashid Auditorium, Indian High School, Oud Metha Road, Dubai.

Shahenshah-e-Ruumaaniyat was a two-and-a-half-hour musical drama, in an informal setting of real people with a passion for poetry who spoke about the poet and the social and cultural context of his life. The key idea behind this concept was to educate, as also entertain, the audience with the depth of his work. On the stage in conversation were Obaid Azmi, Sangeeta Bedi and Prithvi Haldea.

ICAI (Dubai) Chapter NPIO, held a seminar on Investment-For Powering the Growth. At Roda Al Murooj, Downtown Dubai. The seminar discussed the investment climate and how it would look moving into 2019. Experts in investment field addressed the members.

Anita Yadav, Head of Fixed Income Research, Emirates NBD spoke on Global Market Outlook 2019. Anita Yadav stated that while 2018 was tough with total return being negative for 90% of all assets in USD terms and 61% of assets in local currencies, 2019 brings with it volatility due to Brexit, oil prices, geopolitics, china growth slowing etc, but 2019 is expected to end with two rate hikes.

Speaker CA Ananda Kumar, Chief Executive (GCC Operations), Bank of Baroda spoke on the topic: A perspective on UAE Banking-2019 and beyond. CA Niranjan Hiranandani, Founder and Managing Director, Hiranandani Group, spoke on Real Estate Market Outlook 2019. Lakshmi Iyer, Chief Investment Officer, Kotak Mahindra Asset Management CO. Ltd, spoke on India Markets Outlook 2019

Interwoven in the show were several of Hasrat’s widely-acclaimed songs, mukhdas and shers sung by Ibaadat’s team of consummate singers to specially curated music. The team of singers included Supriya Joshi, Sarvesh Mishra, Anand Bahal, Somdatta Basu, Naveen Anand, Shantanu Banerjee, Jatin Ahuja and Tiara Bhat.

There was a keynote address by CA Abbas Ali Mirza, Past Chairman, ICAI Dubai Chapter & Author of 15 books on IFRS published in USA, who spoke on Changing Global

IFRS SUPER CONFERENCE -19TH JANUARY, 2019

Financial Reporting Landscape-Defining moments, Recent Strategic Changes and Challenges. He was of the opinion that it was his vision to see IFRS being adopted all over the world as a uniform standard.

IFRS expert and guru for many CA MP Vijay Kumar, ICAI Central Council Member spoke on IFRS 16, Leases,bringing out the nuances of this complicated

standard in a very succinct manner. A panel discussion by Asim Rasheed, Group Financial Controller, Emirates NBD, CA MP Vijay Kumar, ICAI Central Council Member, Irshad Jooma, Principal, Deolitte & Touche, IFRS 9 specalist and moderated by CA Abbas Ali Mirza brought out the various intricacies of the IFRS in practice. CA Padmanabha Acharya, President IBPG, Abu Dhabi, and Past Chairman of Abu Dhabi Chapter explained about IFRS 15 and its principles by giving us relatable examples, which helped in driving home the message to the member. CA Ranjit Chandran, Partner, Deloitte, Kuwait spoke on IFRS 9, Financial Instruments. This is again a complicated standard and CA Ranjith managed to bring out the various technical intricacies of this.

INDIAN UNION BUDGET 9TH FEBRUARY, 2019

ICAI (Dubai) Chapter NPIO, held a talk on Indian Union Budget 2019 in association with Zee International at Hyatt Regency Dubai Creek Heights, Healthcare City, Dubai. H.E Shri Vipul Consul General of India in Dubai addressed the members, and spoke of the various postivies the budget had brought in.

ICAI (Dubai) Chapter NPIO, held a Seminar on Valuation, M&A and Restructuring - “Measuring the Pulse, Moving Ahead” on Saturday, at The Address Hotel, Dubai Marina.

Leo Vera, Director - Corporate Finance, PWC spoke about executing M&A in the Middle East. CA Vikas Papriwal, Partner Head of Advisory, KPMG Lower Gulf spoke on Restructuring Landscape in the GCC. Mr. Tarun Koduri, M&A Director, EY Corporate Finance Limited spoke on Practical Issues in Business Valuations. : CA Zuhaib Khan, Director, Advisory, KPMG spoke on Managing Challenges of IPO Process.

The Parvasi Bharatiya Samman Awardees Dr. Zulekha, founder and chairperson of Zulekha Healthcare Group, Girist Pant Social worker and Surender Singh Kandhari, Dubai’s Guru Nanak Darbar Sikh Temple, and a philanthropist and businessman were honored.

There was a special Address by Dr. B.R.Shetty, Chairman UAE Exchange, who dwelled upon his vision for philantrophic work especially in the medical field. DP Singh Executive Director and Chief Marketing Officer, SBI Mutual Fund spoke on Budget implications on Investments and FDI. Vivek Law founder, CEO & Editor-in-Chief, The MoneyMile spoke on Advisory session on the Key Points of the Union budget 2019. He also chaired an expert Panel discussion with. B.M. Singh, Ex- Chairman, Central Board of Direct Taxes, Prof. Aman Agarwal, VC, Indian Institute of Finance, Dr. Sachchidanand Shukla, Chief Economist, Mahindra & Mahindra.

CA Dr. Girish Ahuja, Direct Tax Practitioner, Indian’s Eminent Tax Guru Topic: Analysis of Union Budget 2019 with respect to NRIs Panel Discussion: Budget Impact on NRIs. He had the audience spell bound with the mastery on the subject and his way of delivery. This was then followed by a panel discussion which was moderated by CA Krishnan Ramachandran, CEO, Barjeel Geojit Securities LLC. The panelist were CA Raju Menon, Chairman, Kreston Menon, Mr. Chandraprakash Siroya,

Vice Chairman, Dubai Gold and Jewellery Group. Devesh Mamtani, FRM President - Investments & Advisory (Financial Markets), Century Financial, Paras Shahdapuri from the Nikai group.

The ICAI Dubai (Chapter) NPIO honored the winners of the Ist International Leaders Award. CA Rita Dugar CFO, Abu Dhabi National Islamic Finance who won the Commendable Woman Award and CA Rajesh Somani, MD & CEO Swiss Singapore who won the “Member of the Year’ award. CA Ganpat Singhvi, Group Advisor & Director-Al Nasser Holdings Group was awarded ‘Mentor of the year award.

DUBAI CARESWALK FOR EDUCATION -15TH FEBRUARY, 2019

IntroductionThe Institute of Chartered Accountants of India is having its Overseas office in Dubai registered as branch of ICAI with license issued by Dubai Creative Clusters Authority located at Dubai knowledge Park since 2004. CA Prabhdeep Singh Baweja, Regional Director (Middle East and Africa) of ICAI heads the Overseas office which caters to the needs of the members and students in the Middle East and African Region. ICAI has 16 chapters in these regions which include 10 in Middle East and 6 in Africa. With presence of large number of members in these regions, the Overseas office of ICAI acts as coordinating and focal point for working with the chapters and achieving the objectives of the ICAI in these regions.

Activities in DubaiAs Overseas office has infrastructure in Dubai, the Overseas office conducts activities for students and members, which are briefly shared below.

Class room Training forCA StudentsThe office conducted coaching for CPT, IPCC/Intermediate and Final students where many have benefitted. The result of the students who have been facilitated with the support of coaching has always been very good. The Foundation/CPT Coaching Classes for Nov/Dec 2019 exam conducted at our Office from July 18 to Oct 18 and 15 students attended the same. The office conducted Coaching Class for Intermediate Students appearing in May 2019 Exam from Sept. 18 and 8 students attended for the same.
