• There were seven national IBSE programs when IANAS was created in 2004. Four new programs started after 2004: Perú, Bolivia and Venezuela, which have developed as pilot projects, and Panama which during the last IANAS Focal Points meeting in Washington reported a coverage of around ten percent of children in elementary school. New Pilot programs began in 2009 in Guatemala, Dominican Republic and the English speaking Caribbean and a new one is beginning in Costa Rica in 2010.

• At the end of October the second IndagaLa meeting took place in Bogotá.

The National Academies of Argentina, Brazil, Chile, and Colombia the Andes University and the “Convenio Andrés Bello” signed an agreement with the Science Academy of France for the implementation of the Web Page “MapAmerica”, now “Indagala”.

In 2007 the process of developing the website started. A year later (19 - 20 May 2008) in Colombia, Indagala was launched. It was decided to maintain in Colombia the operation of the website until 2011. Five more countries: Bolivia, Costa Rica, Mexico, Peru and Venezuela signed the agreement before the second meeting in Bogotá.

Indagala works on the platform MapMonde donated by the French Academy. This site, in Spanish and Portuguese, will maintain a permanent discussion platform on education issues, scientist will permanently advice teachers and educational materials will be available.

• During October 2009 meeting in Bogotá decisions about operation of Indagala were taken.

• To optimize efforts of complementary programs, as IANAS focal points meet every year, it was decided that the supervising committee will be integrated by the focal points of the Academies of the IANAS Science Education Program which are signatories of the Indagala agreement and by one representative for each one of the other institutions

• This committee is in charge of the general orientation of the program and financial sustainability, proposing new signatories of the agreement and reviewing activities of the editorial committee. It will be coordinated by the Focal Point of the country in charge of administration of the site.

• The editorial committee was integrated with persons attending the meeting.

• This committee is in charge of promoting production and diffusion of Latin American materials through IndagaLa, evaluating scientific and pedagogic quality of documents, organizing bibliographic material and taking care of statistics. Carlos Bosch from Mexico, was elected as coordinator.

Sources of Founding • The IANAS SEP Program has been supported by the

IAP since it was created in 2004. For 2007 were approved USD$43,500 A project for three years, that has to be renewed each year, was presented in 2007; USD$ 25,000 were approved for 2008 and USD$25,000 for 2009.

Through the efforts of the IANAS Co-Chairs and also in response to the specific requests of several Academies to their respective national representatives, the IANAS Science Education Program was approved as a Hemispheric Initiative by the Science Ministers of the Americas who met in Lima on November 11, 2004.

Sources of Founding • After this, a proposal was presented by Jorge

Allende and the Chilean Academy to OAS FEMCIDI in January 2007 requesting USD $330,000 for a 3 years project. The proposal was approved.

The final budgets approved for each year were.

• 2007 US$ 63.700• 2008 US$ 144.100• 2009 US$ 119.000

Page 13: THE IANAS PROGRAM ON SCIENCE EDUCATION La Paz, Bolivia February 25, 2010 José A. Lozano Coordinator ACADEMIA COLOMBIANA DE CIENCIAS EXACTAS, FISICAS Y.

• During last Focal Points meeting in Washington Monica Gómez, FEMCIDI Regional Manager for South America, informed the program was qualified as excellent but a new project had to be presented because, according to the rules, the project could not be extended in time

Page 14: THE IANAS PROGRAM ON SCIENCE EDUCATION La Paz, Bolivia February 25, 2010 José A. Lozano Coordinator ACADEMIA COLOMBIANA DE CIENCIAS EXACTAS, FISICAS Y.

• OAS-FEMCIDI told us that our project washighly appreciated because it was implementing over 90% of its activities and it was benefiting many countries in the Americas.  For this reason, they encouraged us to apply for a renewal. We submitted (through Jorge Allende) a proposal for US$ 450.000 to cover 3 years of a new project that would extend from 2010 to 2012.

Page 15: THE IANAS PROGRAM ON SCIENCE EDUCATION La Paz, Bolivia February 25, 2010 José A. Lozano Coordinator ACADEMIA COLOMBIANA DE CIENCIAS EXACTAS, FISICAS Y.

• Monica Gomez informed Jorge Allende that unfortunately our renewal proposed had not been accepted.  They only approved small new year projects because at the end of 2010 the OAS hopes to define the future FEMCIDI.The US. contribution to FEMCIDI has been greatly reduced, causing a financialcrisis to the system.

• The fact is now that we will not have a Femcidi Project in 2010 or possibly ever.

Page 16: THE IANAS PROGRAM ON SCIENCE EDUCATION La Paz, Bolivia February 25, 2010 José A. Lozano Coordinator ACADEMIA COLOMBIANA DE CIENCIAS EXACTAS, FISICAS Y.

• Through the Academy and the Embassies, France has directly supported several of the National Programs since 1998 and has specially supported the implementation of Indagala.

• In 2007 the Mexican Academy signed bilateral projects whit seven countries to implement its program “La Ciencia en tu Escuela”. Each bilateral project was signed for about USD$35,000.

• We hope the Kellogg Foundation will sponsor a strategic planning workshop each year in a different country.

• Without FEMCIDI support, the Program will have difficulties to survive.

• We hope IANAS will find a new way to help support IANAS-SEP
