and the underserved urban and rural
populations in Georgia and the nation.

As a relatively small, private institution with
a large and lofty public mission, Morehouse
School of Medicine is highly dependent upon
extraordinary philanthropy. Given today’s
complex and challenging health professions’
educational environment, it is vitally important
that we continue to expand the number of
donors and increase the level of contributions
in support of our unique purpose.
The Power of Giving
Truddie E. Darden, M.D., F.A.A.P., medical director of Morehouse Medical
Associates and associate professor, Clinical Pediatrics, with young patient.
In 2007 we launched the Hugh M. Gloster
Society. Named in honor of one of MSM’s
esteemed founders and the late president of
Morehouse College, the Gloster Society was
established to help grow philanthropy and to
enhance our acknowledgment of exceptional
generosity to the Annual Fund. Annual gifts
support student scholarships, the library, and
classroom and technology enhancements. Since
2007, approximately 300 individuals, corporations,
and foundations have become members of the
Gloster Society.

Extraordinary donors enjoy the 2009 Hugh M. Gloster Society Dinner.
In 2009, Morehouse School of Medicine established
the Louis C. Brown Vanguard Award. The award
is named in honor of the late Atlanta internist
and a founder of MSM. The Vanguard Award
recognizes individuals whose pioneering spirit and
demonstrated leadership have impacted issues of
health disparities in Georgia and the nation.
Inaugural Vanguard Award recipients were
A.D. “Pete” Correll, chairman of the Board
of Directors of the Grady Memorial Hospital
Corporation and retired chairman of Georgia-
Pacific Corporation, and Michael B. Russell, CEO
of H. J. Russell & Company and member of
the Board of Directors of the Grady Memorial
Hospital Corporation. They were honored for
their outstanding and diligent work as co-chairs of
the Greater Grady Task Force that guided Grady
Memorial Hospital through transition—ensuring
quality health care for all Georgians.

STuDEnTS
Student enrollment for 2009-2010 is 329. In 2009, some 3,900 students applied to the Doctor of Medicine program. Fifty-six were admitted. The Class of 2009 established an outstanding legacy: The Class achieved a 100 percent pass rate for first-time test takers on the U.S. Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) Step 1; established an endowed scholarship for future M.D. students; and had a member complete the M.D. and Ph.D. programs simultaneously.
RESiDEnTS
• MSM has seven residency programs: Family Medicine, Public Health and Preventive Medicine, Internal Medicine, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Psychiatry, Surgery, and Pediatrics.
• Grady Memorial Hospital is the major teaching site for MSM students and residents. One of the largest public hospitals in the Southeast, Grady is internationally recognized.
FACuLTy
Morehouse School of Medicine employs more than 200 full-and part-time faculty members, many of whom are internationally recognized in their field. Among its faculty and leadership, MSM has four members elected to the prestigious Institute of Medicine.
RESEARCH
The school’s research stature and reputation have grown exponentially over the last decade. In 2009, MSM received more than $54 million in National Institutes of Health funding. The outcomes of our research activities have resulted in the establishment of centers, institutes, and programs with our signature areas of research being cardio-metabolic diseases, cancer, HIV/AIDS, reproductive diseases and neurological disorders—all areas that disproportionately impact minority communities.
