« The planet is no longer spinning as it

should ! »Too rich, too poor and too sad … Stop ! Basta !

Barleys ! « What if we invite clowns from all over

the world to get together ? They will know how to

put laughter and poetry back into peoples' hearts,

and give a large kick (with size 68 shoes) up the

backside of the holy world order that is in a crisis !

When clowns from the far

corners of the world

get together with great pomp

and circumstance...

And this was how, one day back in 2003,

the clowns of the Matapeste Company,

in Niort, in Deux-Sèvres.

ALREADY 16 years... What a story ! Up to 70 clowns

arrived in Niort, by train, by boat, by parachute and by

bike ...! Memorable get togethers followed with huge

receptions in town halls, welcoming the locals in over

90 towns and villages, epic meetings with locals to play

petanque or football and even « Rézouderies » about

subjects like the economic crisis, debt or work …... With the

clowns anything can happen but we hope for the best !

They will be here from the 22th May to

the 5th July 2019 and all over the place

everyone is getting ready !

Red-noses, shows are being rehearsed in Buenos aires, Montpellier,

Antananarive, Surgères, Moscou, Fougères, Barcelone,

Nantes, Namur and Limoges...

In the different towns, villages and districts,

from the smallest to the largest, flags and buntings will be

put up in honour of the 12 clowns and their international

caravan.

In Niort, a welcome is being prepared in great detail for the 14,15

and 16 June on the Colline Saint-André ; The Great World

Clown Council Association and the 120 volunteers, musi-

cians, artists, dansers...everybody is getting ready for the

clowns arrival on the 14th June with fanfares, trumpets

and cheering !

So during the Hugely Important World

Clown Council the planet will start going

round and round again...

Wednesday 22th May at day break : The international clown caravan will arrive in the towns and villages...a vanguard of 12 hardy and intrepid clowns will form a zany, joyful caravan and will spread the clowning word with parades and shows, visiting over 50 towns and villages in the nouvelle aquitaine region... and also in the districts of niort!

Over 150 interventions by the clowns are planned in Deux-Sèvres and also in the other parts of Nouvelle Aquitaine (Vienne, Charente, Charente-Maritime, Gironde, Landes, Lot et Garonne, Dor-dogne, Pyrénées Atlantiques... oh yes, the clown caravan is starting to cross the whole of the new nouvelle aquitaine region... let's bet that the region will soon be bowled over!

Friday 14th June at 19.00 precisely : The great arrival ! The clowns will go up colline St André to reach their village... • the locals are invited at 7pm to see the 70 clowns arrive in splendour ! only the greatest, the best and the biggest clown shoes from the 5 continents, europe, america, asia, australasia and africa, ...not forgetting france and navarre! A fantastic Opening Speech will be given by the New President of the Clowns accompanied by Calixte de Nigremont, the famous Master of Ceremonies, just to wake our zygomas and salute the 5 continents!

Once they arrive at the top of the hill, the clowns and the locals will go into the magic place where the world will turn into a clown for three days …The Clown Village!

And then until Midnight : clowns all over the place!

• At the Clown Village, in the courtyard at du guesclin centre, on the site of the Conseil départemental offices and in the courtyard of the Centre socio-Culturel grand nord, the clowns will be there for three whole days!

• Ils They will give their shows in monologues, duos and trios so that everyone realises how twisted the world is, and how life is not always straightforward, but how good it is to laugh.

• All the different types of clowns will be represented, silent ones and chatty ones, quite ones and loud ones, those who seduce and those who disturb, clowns for children and clowns for adults …. all of them!

• The Courtyard of the Du Guesclin centre will be the big crossroads of the Hugely Important World Clown Council : welcome desk, information, refreshments, exhibitions... everything will be there!

• The evening will round up with a dance!

Saturday 15th June from 12.30 : the clowns will pass through the streets of the town centre and the market to remind everyone that they are « on the hill » and that you can come and have lunch and dinner as a family and dance until at least midnight...

Sunday 16th June from 13.00 : a fine quiet Sunday of clowning ! Walking about, when people come out of church, at the market, « on the hill », they will be there in their sunday best and with clowning for all the different generations. Yes with the clowns, it's always sunday...

at 19.00 : The great moving departure having set the world to rights (well almost) the clowns will set off back to their faraway countries and will invite you to the 10th edition... All the clowns ? No because the caravan will continue its journey until the 5th July...

Welcoming people of the greatest and utmost importance... the clowns !

….what is it ???

...show the clown From every angle• the clown can have a multitude of facets depending on his culture, his social role, his universe, the places where he does his shows and the different art-forms (circus, dance, puppets, cinema, hospital…) in which we can meet him.

• he does his shows everywhere and for all different types of audiences with or without his red nose, with or without words, in different universes which can be political or poetic, a dream or the most crude of realities.

• We want to present all these forms, all these different universes of clowns.

• The clown is an emblematic figure of laughter but in particular of laughing at yourself... a person torn between his desires and his fragility which means he can't reach his dreams. he is always badly adapted to the workd, to today's society, to its rules and its demands…

But using us a witnesses to his efforts to remedy this, the clown makes us laugh about our own contradictions and helps us to happily accept this fragility which we all have and which makes us human.

• The clown brings an amused look, which is sometimes tender and sometimes poetic, but also critical, at the human condition and its dramas, denouncing absurdity, violence, cruelty of the struggle for the weakest, and the struggle for survival of all against everything that is imposed upon us like a law.

• With his haphazard, ridiculous means, but with his unlimited imagination, his poetry, he invents and transforms reality so that it corresponds to him at last and shows us that the power of imagination, of utopia, of solidarity and fraternity are indispensible for resolving the problems we come across.

...faithful to Popular education

... and creating an international clownishness

• Arts, education, social, health, sport, politics... everything that we learn, create and share to make humanity, can not be separated and participates in « culture », in the full sense of the word.

• mixing different publics, partners, places and prac-tices, the Hugely Important World Clown Council (GCMC) wants to become a work of popular educa-tion, by instauring a relationship of « culture-sha-ring » with their partners and the citizens.

• this spreading of roots, since the 1st edition, has taken place through close collaboration with nume-rous groups of amateur artists, popular educative associations, and all the social centres of the district which work towards making a social network

• The Association of the Hugely Important World Clown Council (L'Association du Très Grand Conseil Mondial des Clownds) with its volunteers, ensures, in collaboration with the matapeste, the implication of the citizens in the event.

• the clown being this person who shows the capacity of man to laugh at himself, we find clowns in all different cultures in one form or another. Despite our cultural dif-ferences, we all basically laugh about the same things!

• The Great World Council of the Clowns wants to contri-bute to the meeting of different cultures and cultural exchange around the art of clowning by developping coo-peration between clowns and clown festivals all over the world.

• Since the first edition 50 different clowns of 26 different nationalities have participated in the Hugely Important World Clown Council.

• 79 communes of our Region have already hosted the Clown Caravan.

• Over 140 French and foreign partners from lots of different horizons (artistic, social, educative, health, sport, handicap, etc.) accompany each edition of the Hugely Important World Council of Clowns.

Clown caravanFrom the 22th May to the 4th July, in Deux-Sèvres, Nouvelle-Aquitaine & Vendée !

To each his caravan...

The international Clown Caravan happens around the great meeting at Niort and first wandered through the communes and local districts at the 2007 edition of the festival. (79 Communes have already welcomed it).

With a master of Ceremonies and his assistant, clowns from all over the world arrive in the towns and pro-pose (to choose from) :Parades through the streets with publicity and improvisations...« Mini shows » in dfferent places: schools, old peoples' homes...A huge show with all the clowns in a hall or in the open air..A conference and debate about clowns with videos...And small improvised events : official welcome by the Vip of the Commune, inaugurations...

the huge variety of the clowns' universe gives us a joyful vision of the capacities of the clowns to navigate between poetry, absurdity, burlesque or to improvise with complicity with their public.

In figures the Caravan for 2017 was...

77 shows and activities in 63 places

114 partners communes, schools, care homes and different associations mobilised in primary schools, secondary schools and high schools... old peoples' homes, mediatheques, hospitals, music and dance schools, Social centres...

The MATAPESTE company is in charge of the artistic project and ensures its management.

The company was born in 1978 with Francis Lebarbier and Hugues Roche – who both came from the milieu of amateur theatre and and popular education – the Matapeste have created more than 30 clown type shows for many different types of audience and places (circus, theatre, street, etc).

They have always been very involved in Niort and in the Region with different partners whilst remaining present at a national and international level with tours and joint projects in more than 50 countries.

The Matapeste imagined the Hugely Important Clown World Council to :

• Create an international event in niort in the deux-sèvres and in the region, giving value to clowning in all its different forms and in its social and political role.

• make a world-wide get together which favours international exchange between clowns.

• organise a festival which is also a place of creation and invention, mixing clowns, artists, other art-forms and citizens.

• Bring together very different partners in a spirit of popular education.

hugely important World Clown Council, (clown and co-director of the matapeste).

• Johanna Guilet : in charge of administration of the hugely important World Clown Council (and the matapeste).
