Mallorca, one that is typified bythe bustle of Puerto Alcúdia andCan Picafort, the enchantmentof Puerto Pollensa, thetranquility of coves in Cala SanVicente or Mal Pas, the historyof the old towns. But for all thisdiversity, there is one thing thatis the same - THE WELCOME.

Summer in the north of Mallorca:local school students write about their summerWith St. George’s Day a shared celebration ofEngland’s patron saint and the day of thebook and the rose in Catalonia and Mallorca,“Talk of the North” marked the occasion byteaming up with the English department ofthe IES (Institut d’Educació Secundária) inPuerto Pollensa to organise the inaugural‘Talk of the North” English Literarycompetition’.

Pupils from the third and fourth year of theIES took part submitting essays, in English,based around the theme of ‘Summer in thenorth of Mallorca.’ The best of the entries areright here in “The HOT guide”, giving you aunique insight and welcome to the north ofMallorca from the perspective of the localchildren.

In total, 68 entries were submitted forjudging. Paloma Valero, head of the Englishdepartment, English teacher Núria Garcia,and the Head Teacher of the IES, Belén Paris,whittled the entries down to a shortlist of 26to be considered for the top prizes.

Thanks to the kind collaboration of localbusinesses, in addition to receiving acertificate from “Talk of the North” andhaving their work published in “The HOTguide”, the winners in each category receivedprizes including a first prize of a 25€ voucherfrom Esports Port sports shop. Second prizewas a 15€ voucher for Olimports sports shop,and first, second and third place all receiveda book, in English, courtesy of PapereriaRiutort.

The judging panel consisted of Talk of theNorth’s Publishing Editor, Graeme Ellis, JoanAguilar, ex-Head Teacher of the IES, andAimee Devlin, “Talk of the North” / “TheHOT guide”. The quality of the work washigh with all of the students displaying animpressive grasp of the English language andno shortage of imagination with the contentof the essays which included amixture of works of fiction andnon-fiction.

The task of picking justthree prize winners fromeach category proved to beextremely tough for thejudges and the eventualwinners were selected forhaving captured the essenceof the brief of ‘Summer in thenorth of Mallorca’.

Winning entries excelled inshowing off some of the locallandmarks, describing many of the activitieson offer to holidaymakers and encapsulatingthe joyful atmosphere of a summer holiday.

The Pollensa based newspaper “PuntInformatiu” picked up on the story andalso published an article reporting on thesuccess of the competition. Thanks to all

of the pupils and staff from the IES, thecompetition sponsors and Joan Aguilar, the

“Talk of the North” English Literarycompetition will be repeated in 2014 and willbecome an annual event and a valuableaddition to “The HOT guide”. We hope youenjoy the stories on page ten.

Welcome visitors! I would like to tell youwhat summer is like in Puerto de Pollensa andwhy you should come here again. Puerto dePollensa is a small village on the east coast ofMallorca. For many years its people lived onfishing principally, although they live on

tourism now.It gets very hot here in summer, but thesea breeze helps to cool you down a little.The beaches are long and sandy. Theyoccupy the eastern part of the village.These waters are blue and they are notvery cold.Puerto de Pollensa comes to life insummer. There are many bars andrestaurants, a lot of which are around thebeach, so you can spend all day watching

the beautiful coast and the waves of thesea. Puerto de Pollensa is a great place to

try some of the typical food of Mallorca.It’s also spectacular for the big festivities.June 21st is St. John (Sant Joan? – shouldn’tbe translated to John) and here it is a traditionto have dinner on the beach and at midnightpeople throw a coin into the sea and make awish. The Virgin del Carmen is a veryimportant celebration where the people takethe Virgin on a boat and at midnight fireworksare launched. There is also the ‘La Patrona’celebration in Pollensa. This celebration isfamous all over Mallorca. During the weekbefore La Patrona there is a party every nightin Pollensa. The celebration ends when theMoors and the Christians meet in a big battle.La Patrona is the most exciting of the fiestasand also the most fun!This is only a little part of the summer here. Ifyou want to know more you should come andsee this. We hope that you do!

In summer I go to many different places, notonly in Puerto Pollensa the town where I live,but also in the towns nearby. Towns likePollensa and Alcudia.Alcudia has a lot to offer. Ithas a market two days aweek, Roman ruins thatyou can visit and amuseum. In the centrethere are many differentnice shops. PuertoAlcudia has anincredible 7km beachwith white sand andclean water. There isalso a water park whichis good fun.Another interesting thingis a beach that hasbecome very popular forkite surfing. When you driveby there are always manycolourful kites. Although this partof the beach has lots of seaweed, you can stopand try kite surfing or hire kite surf canoes.The views from the water are amazing.Cala San Vicente is a small neighbourhoodthat has a lot of tourists in the summer. It hassome beautiful beaches where the water islight blue. The only problem is that when theweather is bad the waves are very dangerousand you musn’t swim.An excursion that I love is walking to CalaBoquer. The beginning of the walk is inPuerto Pollensa. It takes around 45 minutesto get there and at the end you find a smallstone beach surrounded by mountains.Come and see for yourself what summer daysare like in Mallorca!

and the annual fiesta for SantJaume is held on 25 July

�The highlight of theannual summer fiesta inCan Picafort is a firework

display and musical show that isthe most spectacular in the north

�On the same day as the fireworks (15August), there is a swimming contest tocatch ducks. They used to be real ones,before this was banned. Nowadays,

plastic ducks are caught

�The tradition of the duck swimdates back to the 1930s, when awealthy landowner donatedducks to workmen who had to

swim for their supper!

�The name “CanPicafort” is said to be

derived from a Señor Picafortfrom Santa Margalida who

established a finca by the coast

�Can Picafort is part of the town ofSanta Margalida, which once upon atime was considered to have been the

wealthiest town in Mallorca

�The necropolis at Son Real, a fewminutes away from Son Bauló, formspart of a site - Son Real - that is

PLAYA DE MURO

�The towers in thedunes in Playa de Muro

were, like others along the bayof Alcúdia, built after the Civil War.Their main purpose was for targetpractice from submarines that were

based in Puerto Alcúdia

�The bridge that crosses the canal inPlaya de Muro is known as the “Bridgeof the English”. This refers to the Britishengineers and workmen who helped to

drain Albufera in the nineteenthcentury

�The name “Muro” means“wall”

�Playa de Murocannot, as a place, boast along history. There was little

here until tourism came along inthe 1960s, except the small cottagesof Ses Casetes des Capellans.

Formerly owned by the church, theywere ceded to Muro and to the

townspeople

�But Playa de Muro can boast someserious history, as the reception to thenature park of Albufera - which ofcourse has been around for many,many years - is in the resort. It is

early 1960s. The festival wasthe idea of British musician PhilipNewman. The festival has now

become a broader arts festival, ratherthan only a series of concerts

�Mallorca’s most famous poet, MiguelCosta i Llobera, was a son of Pollensa.The Llobera family house now belongsto the town, and restoration work is

being undertaken.

ENTERTAINING THE KIDSTime was when kids went on holiday

with their parents and could haveexpected nothing more by way ofentertainment than the beach, the pool,the occasional donkey ride and perhapsan evening out at a fair or circus.That was then. This is now. Kids are theall-important factor when it comes to theholiday decision. They are seen, heardand listened very closely to, because woebetide any parent who doesn’t haveJunior’s best non-boredom at the top ofhis or her holiday priorities list.Some things never change, though.

Around the local resorts, there are still thedonkey rides, or rather pony rides. Andthere are a number of places whererather bigger ponies can be ridden -horse-riding in Puerto Alcúdia, CanPicafort, Son Serra de Marina.

For the child with a more thrill-seekingstreak, there are the karts at KartingMania in Alcúdia’s Bellevue complex.There are activities of different sorts atthe fun maze in Playa de Muro and, forsmaller kids, there is the joy of a ride ona train, the little land trains of Playa deMuro and of Can Picafort. And neverforgetting, of course, the water slides atAlcúdia’s waterpark.But truly, things don’t ever change. Thesimple pleasures of the beach endure,and these were typified by DavidCameron and his family on holiday inPollensa last year. When it came to photoopportunities, what was Dave doing? Hewas building sandcastles on the beach inPuerto Pollensa.One wonders, though, do the Cameronkids make the holiday decisions?

TAKE AWALK ON THE WILD SIDETravel articles and brochures often waxlyrical about the stunning scenery that thenorth of Mallorca has to offer. PuertoPollensa’s iconic Pine Walk, the goldensands of Puerto Alcúdia’s seeminglynever ending beach, and the crystal clearwater of Cala San Vicente’s coves are alltrotted out on a regular basis as ‘jewelsof Mallorca’s crown’. Heritage Site status by UNESCO in 2011.It also provides walking routes of varyingdegrees of difficulty from which to enjoypanoramic views of the rugged andspectacular coastline.Many routes are easily accessible and

can be completed in a couple of hours,giving you a chance to experience a moretranquil and serene side of Mallorca.Detailed maps and guide books are

If yousay it’s prawn cocktail, steak and chipsand Black Forest gateau, washed downwith a fine bottle of Liebfraumilch, thereis nothing wrong with any of these(except the Liebfraumilch), but whatwould you be missing?Gastronomy is a big thing in Mallorca.

Such a big thing is it that the BalearicsTourism Agency and others work hard tomake it a specialised tourism activity. Andthere is an awful lot of awfully goodgastronomy to be had locally. So much sothat it’s hard to know where to start.Suffice it to say, however, that you are

spoilt for choice, and because this choiceis so great, we have looked to try andbroaden your options, bringing in to TheHOT guide the town of Sa Pobla for thefirst time.

The main resorts are full of wonderfuleateries as are the old towns where thereis a premium on sophisticated dining. Butit’s not as though there isn’t suchsophistication in the resorts as there mostdefinitely is. And this is not sophisticationand excellent gastronomy that alwayscome with a hefty bill, because - andonce again - they most definitely do not.Value for money is also at a premium,

and so look out for special offers, menusof the day and set menus.We know how hard the bars and

restaurants locally work at both theirquality and their service, and they havecertificates, awards and quality marks toprove it.And if you’re still hankering for some

THE ART OF THE PAAMB OLIThere are, one supposes, certain dishesassociated with different nationalities thatare, on the face of it, pretty simple. Fishand chips for the British, for instance.Sauerkraut for the Germans. Bortsch forthe Russians. None of them appears tobe that taxing in a culinary way, but getany of them wrong, and there will be hellto pay for the poor sucker who has gotthem wrong.Mallorca has, also on the face of it,

some simple, traditional dishes. And nonecan be more simple than one thatcombines bread and oil. It sounds likenothing in particular, but trying telling aMallorcan that.We are talking the grand art of the “paamb oli”. It comes in infinite varieties, alldepending on what toppings, so to speak,might be added. But at its heart, there is

no more than the right sort of bread,prepared in the right sort of way(preferably partially toasted), the right sortof olive oil (virgen for greater taste andgoodness), the right sort of tomato to besqueezed and smeared, the right sort ofolives to be served as a side nibble.To the uninitiated, pa amb oli appears towarrant no more attention than a piece ofbread and butter. But how wrong theuninitiated can be. The art of the perfectpa amb oli is something that takes yearsof loving practice and devotion. And theresult is bread bliss, oil orgasm.We have friends who have achieved thisperfection. You will find them mentionedon pages in The HOT guide. It would beunfair to single any one of them out, aseach has a unique approach to this mostsimple but unmissable treat. Try it!

MALLORCA - MONTH BY MONTHThis is The HOT guide’s guide to whatMallorca is like month by month. While formany of you, Mallorca is the summer andthe summer only, there is more to theisland than just sun and beach.

January: The month, the year starts witha hangover, the party having gone on wellinto the small hours once the bells hadrung at midnight and twelve grapes hadbeen eaten. January is far from being adead month. Quite the opposite. Not onlyis the weather generally pretty decent(dry and sunny and at times up to 20degrees), there are the fiestas. And nonecome any better than Sant Antoni. SaPobla stages the most importantcelebration of Sant Antoni, but Muro hasan excellent event as well. A night of fire,bangs and terror.

February: If there is going to be poorwinter weather, February is usually themonth when it comes. Last year, a spellof weather was the coldest for over 50years. It is a month, though, when thingsstart to pick up in tourism terms, cyclistsarriving and events being held. Anddepending on when it falls, there isalways Carnival with its various parades.

March: The weather in March can alsobe a tad iffy, cold even. But as ever withthe weather, one can say one thing, andthe weather will turn out to be somethingentirely different, as in warm and sunny.It’s the month also when spring begins tomake an appearance, pollen from pinesflying around all over the place. And whenspring truly has sprung, it is time for thespring fairs, such as that of Muro.

It is amonth of mad panic as people huntaround for jobs, when business ownersseem rarely to have any time for anythingother than getting ready. The weather canstill be a bit hit and miss, but the sun willfeel that little warmer.May: And they’re off! The first of Maymarks the official start of the tourismseason, by which one means that manywork contracts come into effect. Those inemployment can look forward to sixmonths of mostly hard graft. As soon asthe first of May arrives, there is anoticeable increase in activity. There is farmore traffic, there are far more coachesand far more people. Weather? Well,mainly good, but you can never beentirely sure. Temperatures tend to bearound 21 degrees perhaps rising to upto 24 by the end of the month, but the sunis getting very much more powerful.June: Now you’re talking, and now youcould well be baking. June has beenknown to be extremely hot, and there isheat of a different variety as June is themonth when the summer fiesta seasonstarts, the first one locally being Muro’sSant Joan, followed by the Sant Perefiestas, primarily in Puerto Alcúdia.July: Summer is very much here now.Everywhere is buzzing with tourists, butfor many locals, things start to slow down.The kids have already been on holidayfor a couple of weeks when July starts,the beach and the barbecue beckon, andthe heat makes everyone move that littlebit slower. In Puerto Pollensa, there is theVirgen del Carmen fiestas, Alcúdia hasSant Jaume and Sa Pobla manages tohave two saints’ fiestas at more or lessthe same time. (continued page 44)

August: If you can’t stand the heat ... TheMallorcans, those not working in tourism,pretty much come to a complete halt inAugust. Everyone is on holiday andthey’re all heading for the beaches. Theroads are a total nightmare, but there isso much going on that you just have toget to. Pollensa holds the daddy of allfiesta events - the Moors and Christians -it also has its festival, as does Sa Poblawith its jazz. And then there are thespectacular fireworks, especially in CanPicafort in the middle of the month.September: As with the following monthof October, this can be when stormsbreak out, but it is a month that isgenerally still baking hot. The nature oftourism changes, it becomes a bit moresedate and a feeling begins among thelocals that the end is in sight.October: It can be tranquil and blissful orit can be chucking it down. When the end

of the season comes, for some there isrelief, for others a sense of sadness.Summer has gone for another year, andautumn brings with it a shift in localentertainment - the autumn fairs takeover from the fiestas, starting withAlcúdia’s at the beginning of the month.November: The season ends, a newmonth starts and, as usual, there is apublic holiday. All Saints. For many,November is a month to unwind, to go onholiday themselves or to leave Mallorcaand look for work elsewhere. The island’swinter tourism has been an issue foryears.December: Everyone starts to lookforward to Christmas and to what istypically pretty decent weather. This timeof the year is often quite dry and mild.And when Chrismas passes, New Yearrolls around and one of the biggestparties of the year.

THE YEAR OF OUR FATHEROne of the most celebrated figures in Mallorca’s history is the FrayJunipero Serra. He was born 300 years ago this year and 2013 hasbeen designated as the year of Junipero, Father Junipero, theMallorcan friar who, pretty much, created California.

Interstate 280 is the freeway in the SanFrancisco bay area that connects SanFrancisco to San Jose where it forms ajunction with Route 101, the longesthighway in California. This highway endsin Los Angeles and connects withInterstate 5 along which you can drive toSan Diego and the Mexican border.Interstate 280, Route 101, San Diego,San Jose and San Francisco may be aworld away from Majorca but they are alllinked to the story of a remarkableFranciscan father from the smallMajorcan town of Petra.Miguel Joseph Serra was born on 24

November 1713. He entered theFranciscan order a few days before hisseventeenth birthday and, in honour ofSaint Juniper, a companion of SaintFrancis, he adopted the name Junipero.He was a theology and philosophyscholar in Palma and in 1749 he leftMajorca for Mexico. He died in 1784, butbetween the time he arrived in Mexicountil his death in what is now Carmel inCalifornia, he devoted himself tomissionary work and to his conviction toconvert native peoples of the Americas toChristianity.The Spanish had first claimed Californiain 1542, but having done so it was largelyignored. Over two hundred years later,however, King Carlos III became alarmedat the possibility of the English or theRussians trying to get their hands on thisoutpost of the Spanish Empire.Consequently, at the start of 1769 acombined missionary and militaryexpedition set off from Mexico with Father

Father Junipero Serra as leader of thechurch's representatives.This expedition was to Alta California, aterritory that comprised current-dayCalifornia as well as surrounding states,such as Nevada. Though there wereconflicts as to the exact priorities of theexpedition, Serra and the military leaderGaspar de Portolà had a goodrelationship, and in July 1769 the firstmission was founded - San Diego.The expedition faced all manner of

hardships. After nine months, it wassuffering from lack of supplies andfood. Portolà wanted to return toMexico, there having been no sign of aship bringing relief.

52Serra argued that they should stay andled days of prayers in the name of SaintJoseph (San Jose). On 19 March 1770,the day before the expedition would havedeparted, a white sail was seen on thehorizon.There were to be 21 missions

established in all. They stretched alongthe coastline from San Diego to Sonoma,where the last was to be created in 1823.Father Junipero was responsible forseven of them, the mostnortherly having been themission of Santa Clara deAsís near San Jose. He wasthe most important of theFranciscan missionary friars,his religious convictions anddetermination overcomingthe privations that weresuffered and the injuries andillnesses that he personallyexperienced.

These injuries havebecome the stuff of legend,to the point where it isdifficult to know what actuallyis legend and what is thetruth. It was said that Portolàwanted him to drop out of theexpedition when FatherJunipero was bitten on the leg by amosquito; a bite that became so badlyinfected that he could neither sleep norwalk. The story goes that he encountereda healer who rid him of the infection. Butthere is another version of the story whichhas it that he had been bitten by a snakein Mexico some time before, one that wasto cause him problems for the rest of hislife.There are also differing views as to how

Father Junipero treated the nativeIndians. One suggests that he wouldinstruct corporal punishment to be

inflicted, another totally refutes this.There is greater evidence to indicate that,where there was ill-treatment (and it can'tbe denied), this wasn't inspired byJunipero and the friars but by the military,once it was under the command of PedroFages, who had replaced Portolà. FatherJunipero was so angered by Fages thathe returned to Mexico City in order toinsist that he was removed. He was.What is undoubtedly true is that Father

Junipero was single-minded in his wish toconvert the native Indians and to ensuretheir salvation. He was zealous, fanaticalperhaps, but he was also the product ofhis day. That the native Indians might nothave wanted to be converted, that theyhad mostly lived in peace before theSpanish turned up in any great number inthe second half of the eighteenth centuryis hard to reconcile in current-day terms,but such was the nature of imperialism ofthe era, both religious and political.Father Junipero was an astonishing

From a little town in Majorca hetravelled to Mexico and then to Californiaand became not just the friar whointroduced Christianity to the US westcoast but also the person who, in effect,created California. It wasn't he whofounded San Francisco - the missionthere, San Francisco de Asís, was thework of Father Francisco Palóu in 1776 -but there is a statue to him in the GoldenGate Park. Just as there are any numberof other memorials to Father Juniperoacross California.The mission in San Jose wasn't to be

founded until some years after FatherJunipero died, but his prayers to SanJose were what had kept the expeditiongoing. Had he not called on the aid ofSaint Joseph, who knows how historymight have turned out. The roads andcities mentioned at the start of the articleall do relate to Father Junipero, but twoof the roads need some explanation.Route 101 more or less follows the routeof "El Camino Real", a rudimentary roadthat connected all the missions, whichwere located so that they were no morethan a day's journey apart. Interstate 280is known by other names. The world'smost beautiful freeway is one name, andit seems appropriate that a man ofreligious purity as Father Junipero shouldbe remembered for something sobeautiful. It is also known as the JuniperoSerra Freeway.

Two of Mallorca’s most importantsaints have their feast dayscelebrated in January. One is SantAntoni, the other is Sant Sebastià.Anthony it is who is remembered bythe fire night in Sa Pobla, Muro andother towns on 16 January. Sebastianis the patron saint of Palma, and hisdate is 20 January. But who werethese saints?

Sant AntoniAn Egyptian monk who lived to the ripeold age of 105, having been born in aplace called Coma in 251AD, so it isthought, and having died in 356AD. Agenuinely ascetic hermit, in that he cuthimself off from the rest of civilisation, helived variously in desert caves and anabandoned fort. Often considered to bethe founder of monasticism, i.e. living thelife of a monk, renouncing worldly goodsand pursuits and devoting his whole lifeto prayer and spiritual work, Antoni isalso a patron saint many times over: foranimals, undertakers, butchers andeczema sufferers, to name but a few.

Sant SebastiàA Roman soldier originally from what isnow France, he fell out with the EmperorDiocletian, who was fanatically anti-Christian, and was eventually clubbed todeath, having survived numerous arrowsbeing fired into him. So the story goes, itwas a bone from one of Sebastian’sarms that helped to rid Palma of a plaguein 1643. It had been brought from theisland of Rhodes, as it was believed tohave healing powers. And what do youknow? It worked.

GATAMOIX: THE COLONY THAT DIEDIn the mid-nineteenth century, two lawswere passed by the national governmentwhich paved the way for the creation ofagricultural colonies in Mallorca. Theselaws of 1855 and 1868 were whatbrought about Colonia Saint Pere,Colonia Sant Jordi and Colonia de Nostra(aka Porto Cristo). The colonies cameinto existence as a response to demandsof a growing population to feed itself andto have somewhere to live. Much coastalland had until then been looked upon asbeing worthless, owing to problems ofcultivation caused by natural obstacles:forest, dunes, salt marshes. And therewas no marsh that represented a greaterchallenge for development than thewetland of Albufera.Though Alcúdia (and later Sa Pobla)

didn't acquire a settlement with "colonia"in the name, one was created. Gatamoix.It was later to get a "colonia" in its titlewhen, in 1892, its name was changed toColonia de Sant Lluís. Gatamoix was, bypopulation, one of the largest of thecolonies, but it, as with others, such asEls Fusterers, the smaller, later colony inSa Pobla, died out, whereas those rightby the coast, like Colonia Sant Pere,were to eventually become touristcentres.

Gatamoix has perhaps the mostpoignant tale to tell of these colonies. Atone time, there were more than ahundred people living there. Over 40families in more than 20 houses. By thetime of the outbreak of the First WorldWar, there were a mere seven people left.Within ten years, there was not a soul left.Gatamoix's decline was not as sudden asits creation had been, but the lingeringdeath that it experienced was attributablein part to the death of the projects that thethe British civil engineer, John Frederick

Bateman, had initiated.Bateman it was who

was responsible for theproject to drain Albufera.This project had beenfirst mooted at the end ofthe eighteenth century. Itwas finally given thegreen light through a royal order of 1851.Bateman, through his New Majorca LandCompany, won the tender to undertakethe drying-out, a scheme that was felt tobe essential primarily on public healthgrounds. Albufera was a breeding-groundfor disease, including malaria.Bateman was also instrumental in the

founding of the Gatamoix colony. Thepeople who came to live there - and theywere primarily from Pollensa - formedpart of the drainage workforce and werethose who set about commercialcultivation on Albufera.Gatamoix was (is) behind the Puig SantMartí, the brooding presence that loomsover the current-day Bellevue Mile andmain Alcúdia tourist centre. It was somedistance from work that was being doneon Albufera; even if work had to beperformed under less than totally healthyconditions, the hope was that the colonywouldn't be as affected by mosquitoes orby the diseases that Albufera bred.The drainage project and Gatamoix

were both relatively successful, but onlyrelatively. Bateman is recognised ashaving achieved much, one of hisachievements having been the creationof the original bridge (the bridge of theEnglish - Pont dels Anglesos) overanother creation, the Grand Canal, whichoffered a means of movement betweenAlcúdia and communities further eastalong the coast.

60But despite Bateman being rememberedwith a degree of reverence, the projectwas far from wholly successful. Albuferawas still liable to being inundated and tohaving salt water come into it. The landfor cultivation was, as a consequence,not as extensive as had been hoped.Nevertheless, Gatamoix thrived for a

while, new crops being introduced toMallorca for the first time - peanuts and

sweet potatoes - to supplement thefarming of wheat and maize. AndBateman's son, Lee, to whom ownershipof Gatamoix was passed three yearsbefore his father died in 1889, set aboutfurther development. A school was built,as was a church. It was Lee who had thename of the colony changed by royaldecree - Lluís for Lee. Unfortunately forLee, he had enormous debts, mainlybecause the returns from the cultivationhad not lived up to expectations.Gatamoix, by now popularly referred to

as Poble Nou rather than Colonia de SantLluís, was sold in 1896 to a Palmanobleman, Joaquim Gual de Torrella, whochose to close the colony.The buildings were systematically

demolished over several years. Thematerial was used, among other things,for developing the road between SaPobla and Alcúdia. As the buildings weredemolished, so the people left, and ninety

years ago, Gatamoix became totally de-colonised. All that remained was what isnow the refuge of Poble Nou, the newtown that died.

Look around this mostbeautiful part of the north-west coast of Mallorca, then go on to the port ofSóller, one of the most charming of all the island’s resorts, before taking theold tram to the town of Sóller, the centre of Mallorca’s orange and lemonproduction and a place steeped in history. Finally, it’s time to let the traintake the strain, and a trip on the train to Palma that made its inauguraljourney 100 years ago. (Oh, and if you’re wondering, there’ll be a

coach to bring you back from Palma.)

If this isn’t enough, then there are excursions to Marineland,the dolphinarium founded in 1970, to the entertainmentat Son Amar, Pirates Adventure, Mallorca Rocks. Or

to the theme park that is the House ofKatmandu or the amazing Palma

Aquarium.So many excursions, so

little time.

THE MYSTERY OF CLUB MED IN ALCUDIAThe resorts of Mallorca tend to beassociated with one particular tourismmarket. For example, Puerto Pollensahas traditionally been thought of as aBritish resort. Puerto Alcúdia isn'ttraditionally British and originally, as Irecall having been told many years ago,it was strongly Swedish and Belgian.The Swedish part of this equation I canunderstand, but the Belgian part hasalways been less understandable.Belgium, unlike Sweden, is notconsidered to be an especially importantmarket for Mallorca. Nevertheless,Belgians obviously do come to Mallorcaand have done for years, but whyAlcúdia?I am only guessing that the Belgian

association has something to do with theorigins of the all-inclusive. And for theseorigins, one has to go back to 1950. Itwas then that the Belgian Gérard Blitzinvited the first holidaymakers to a tentedcamp on a part of the beach in Alcúdia -the Playa de los Francesos, as it becameknown. It was an all-inclusive experienceonly in the loosest sense of the term. Theholidaymakers all mucked in, there werecommunal facilities, including sportingones, food was included in the price ofthe holiday, and they were the pioneersin having a holiday under the banner ofwhat was to give the world the all-inclusive - Club Méditerranée - at theearliest "holiday village".The story of Club Med first pitching upand pitching on a beach in Alcúdia is wellenough known. What is also well enoughknown is that Blitz got hold of tentssupplied by Gilbert Trigano, who becameBlitz's partner and boss of Club Med.It is also known that Blitz came up withthe idea for holiday villages havingexperienced the Olympic Club tent village

in Corsica where, apparently, heregistered the Club Méditerranée name.But apart from these familiar parts of thestory, very little else is known and so anumber of questions arise.The first one is - where was the holidayvillage? Playa de los Francesos is aname that one can find references totoday but it is not a commonly usedname. Going on nothing more than an oldphoto, I would place the Playa de losFrancesos of the holiday village ashaving been roughly where the SunwingResort now is.Secondly, how long was it there and didit come to consist of straw huts, asbecame a Club Med trademark? Itexisted for around ten years before it wasrelocated to Porto Petro at the start of the1960s. The site there is no longer a ClubMed, Blau Porto Petro Beach Resorthaving replaced it some years ago. As forany straw huts ... .The final question is a more difficult one- why was the original Club Med createdin Alcúdia? Indeed, why was it in Mallorcaor Spain at all? Gérard Blitz was asocialist and had been a Jewishresistance fighter during the SecondWorld War, as had been Gilbert Triganowho, for a time, had also been acommunist. Yet, here they were with aholiday village in Francoist Mallorcawhere, as with the rest of Spain, theregime at that time was not well-disposedto foreigners, of whatever politicalpersuasion or from wherever they mighthave originated, having a businesspresence. (It took theAmericans to batterdown the doors of the regime'sreluctance to allow foreign investment intourism.)

The Club Med philosophy ofegalitarianism was a reflection of thefounders' values. Though Club Med wasto later acquire a reputation for a certainlack of, how can one put it, inhibition, itwas doubtless there from the verybeginning. It owed at least something tothe French naturist movement, albeitwithout the nudity (or maybe there was).Such egalitarianism and libertarianismwould have been totally out ofkeeping with the regime'sattitudes and Mallorcansocietal attitudes of the time.

Notwithstanding theseapparently conflictingperspectives, Alcúdia as thelocation for the village mayhave been the consequenceof pre-Civil War ties with Air

France. Its seaplanes used to droppassengers off in the bay of Alcúdia enroute from Marseille to Algeria.In the early 1950s, Air France was activein developing tourism through its routesfrom both Paris and Brussels to Palma,though this doesn't answer the questionas to why Alcúdia.Club Med in Alcúdia is all a bit of amystery. I can find no references to it from

1950 until it was relocated;nothing as to what it mayhave become during thoseten years or as to the reasonwhy it came to be in Alcúdia.There must have been moreto it than Blitz just simplyhaving turned up one day. Butwhat that more might be, Ihonestly couldn't say.

THE SOPHISTICATION OF HOLIDAY INFORMATIONIt’s remarkable to think that there was atime when there wasn’t the internet to tellus absolutely everything we need toknow about going on holiday. Back in theday, all we had were Judith Chalmers andCliff Michelmore as well as tour operators’brochures, but the brochures could bepretty economic with the truth.This has all changed. No one can get

away with trying to pull the wool overholidaymakers’ eyes, because there isjust so much information. And if the woolis pulled, there is a huge danger: TripAdvisor and all the other means wherebythe disgruntled tourist can tell the worldwhat he or she thinks of whatever hotel,bar or restaurant.One of the greatest boons with the

internet is the ability to share informationand to make recommendations. Thepower of cyberspace word of mouth is

immense, and this word of mouth fliesaround on social media and websites.PuertoPollensa.com is a prime

example, thanks to a very active forum,of how this information-sharing can workeffectively. And privately-run websites aswell as blogs, Facebook pages and whathave you (and everyone in the northernarea appears to have a Facebook page)provide invaluable insights into the area.Holiday information is at a level of

sophistication and volume that wouldhave been unimaginable in the dayswhen Michelmore was first introducingthe BBC’s “Holiday” programme. Andback then, holidaymakers were verymuch innocents. Nowadays, though, theyare anything but, and so woe betide anybusiness that attempts any wool-pulling.But for those businesses who do thingswell, the internet is very much a friend.

Alcanada (or is it Aucanada, either will do) lies in a westerly direction some fourkilometres from the port of Alcúdia. A quiet holiday location, Alcanada’s golfcourse, designed by Robert Trent Jones, has been named by a German magazineas the best in Europe.

Coming from Puerto Alcúdia towards this particularly tranquil and beautiful part ofAlcúdia, there is the old power station just near to the commercial port of Alcúdia.Long decommissioned, the intention had been to convert it into a technologymuseum, but for the time being plans are on ice, as there is not the financeavailable for such a large project for which the architectural design would seek tomaintain the landmark features of its chimneys.

It can seem as thoughthere is no one there, until you get to thestart of the beach and when you realisethat Son Serra has an atmosphere ofwhat beachlife used to be like.Son Serra is the perfect place to chill,there are no hotels, just villas, someapartments and less than a handful ofbars/restaurants. A car is advisable, butthen you might want to forget the car. InSon Serra, you’ll just dream away.
