Welcome to our Term 2 newsletter. It has been a busy term as we prepared for the reports for our students. Most are now distributed and we hope you have had a chance to discuss your child‘s progress with teachers at our Parent/Teacher evening.

I would like to take the opportunity to congratulate Ms. Marisa Johnston on her promotion to Head Teacher at John Edmonson High School. I would like to thank you for all your work with our students and hope you enjoy the challenges ahead. As well I would like to acknowledge Mr. Michael Spicer who will be retiring at the end of this term. He has contributed to the operation of our History Faculty and assisted many students and teachers while at our school. Good luck in

your retirement. Mr Keith Martin a long serving member of our administrative staff is also retiring, Keith worked for many years in the print room as well as spending some time in both the library and science. Thank you and good luck in your retirement. Our National Partnerships team continues to work across our school and educational community. Our major focus with our partner primary school – Fairfield Public School, has continued to be the Focus on Reading program. Our Year 7 classes with their specialist teachers continue to model programs that are part of Fairfield Public School‘s program. We are seeing great changes in our classrooms with new developments in the way our Year 7 students are taught. Our students have been involved in many programs but a particularly interesting link with WotOpera led to our students performing at the Seymour Centre (Sydney) in this special program where our students designed all aspects of an opera. These students were featured on Chanel 2‘s 7.30 Report and the Sydney Morning Herald. Congratulations to Ms. Weber and Mr. Honyak who helped our students and the WotOpera team. Our Staff Conference featured our special link with the University of Sydney as the staff spent a Saturday linking with staff from the university as part of our professional learning. More information about our Interactive White Boards was a particularly exciting workshop that was taken by many of our teachers. I would like to thank Ms. Sayed-Rich and the University of Sydney ‗Compass‘ team for their help at organising this conference. In particular I would like to highlight the presentation by Mr. Anders Sorman. Accessing his web presentation would be interesting for you to see what our staff is working towards with 21st Century Teaching and Learning.

Student attendance has been looked at this term. I would encourage you to discuss issues such as getting to school on time and attending school each school day with your children. For those of you that may need to have a longer term overseas visit please apply to the school first. Although we understand there may be reasons for such visits, please consider the requirements of course work for your child‘s progress through our school. Our Parent Café continues to grow and involve many parents and activities. Guest speakers are invited each week and many activities such as Health Eating activities in our kitchens continue each term. Our Parent Café Catering also continues to grow with numerous activities being provided for by our parent groups.

The Community Garden continues to develop with TAFE supporting our students, parents and community members to work towards a TAFE accreditation in Horticulture. We have added provision for 4 water tanks to help with watering and expanding the area during Term Three. There are plans to feature the Community Garden during our Multicultural Day celebrations in Term Three. As well, we have developed a special link with TAFE which is now teaching our Retail classes in Years 11 and 12. The need to have a teacher for these classes had TAFE successfully

support our students and now also teaching Retail students at our school. My thanks to Ms. Elmir and Ms. Johanna Vance (TAFE) who helped organise these links, and also to Suzanna Movales and Phil Stephens from TAFE who are teaching our students. Our Year 12 students received their reports during a special development of our Individual Education Plans (IEPs). Students met with their parents and mentor teachers to evaluate their reports and plan for their final preparations towards the HSC. Thank you to these teachers and the organisation behind this evening. The deep discussion between students and teachers should help their final preparations. Congratulations also to IEC students Rusul Abdulrazzaq who won 1st in the South West Region and Dong Diec winning 2nd prize in a recent Harmony Day poster competition. They were awarded their prizes at a ceremony held at Parliament House on 14th June 2012. This is also balanced by our students and parents featuring in a DVD about Dental Health. This was ―released‖ in Week Nine during Refugee Week. This is a great win for our Fairfield community. Our Pacific Communities students were successfully featured at a recent Men‘s Health initiative at Bonnyrigg. Their performance was highly acclaimed by the audience. We have had success recently at involving parents in our Pacific Communities Parent Café which has been meeting this Term. As the term finishes I would like to thank the staff for their continued support of our students and their commitment to their professional development. I would like to thank Mr. Graham Jarvis and Mrs. Amanda Conray who have been filling in as our Deputy Principals. The many initiatives that are part of our National Partnerships agenda are impacting across the school and I thank the team members. Enjoy the holidays. Please discuss your child‘s reports with them and I look forward to Term Three and continuing the successes of our school.

YEAR 7 REPORT WITH Ms Molina

It has been a fantastic term for Year 7. There have been a variety of learning experiences that have been exposed to this term. 7Horsley, 7Prospect, 7Kenyon have all experienced the Smart Artz drama workshops. The students spent the whole day putting together a movie; the concept was left up to the class to develop. The workshop aims to develop skills and strengths within each student. The movie will be professionally edited and shown back to the students. I would like to congratulate Aaron Luu who has excelled in acting debut. All of the students involved in the program have spoken very highly about this program and their experience in filming their drama performance. During Week 4, Friday the 18th of May, Ms. Lykourezos, Mr. Whittermore and Ms. Whilshire and I accompanied Year 7 to Sydney University as part of the COMPASS program that Sydney University runs with local High Schools. Year 7 was given the opportunity to experience a day

of university life. During the day students attended a lecture; they were given a tour of the University grounds, they visited a museum and participated in a fencing workshop. We had a wonderful day together. Week 5 Year 7 had their second round of vaccinations. All of Year 7 were very brave. This term some of our Year 7 students attended the Zone for athletes at Fairfield Showground. A number of students then went onto Regionals. Year 7 also sat their NAPLAN testing this term, which many students have been working towards diligently. Year 7 seem to be settling well into the high school and are very much looking forward to Jamberoo at the end of this year. It has been an absolute pleasure being Year 7 advisor to such a beautiful group of students. Year7 are reminded Fairfield High School message towards bullying:

YEAR 8 REPORT WITH Mr Jackson

This term has seen a large number of different students from Year 8 involved in a variety of extracurricular activities. These activities have created a real buzz around the year group. In May, 8 Blue worked through a project called Smart Artz. This drama workshop focused on creating a play based on ‗role models in our lives‘. The students developed a storyline about teleporting themselves into different scenarios in which they faced challenges to their values of kindness, honesty, courage and teamwork. The class spent the day brainstorming ideas related to these values, developing the storyline, and then producing a short play that explored all these issues. Other classes in Year 8 are scheduled to become involved in similar drama projects later in the year. In early June five students were involved in the Wot Opera project. Karina Membreno, Jamie-Lee Ladewig, Melvina Molai, Julie Mose, and Sarah

Naivalurua teamed up with students from other year groups to produce an opera that explored themes of love, revenge and intrigue. The creative energy that was summoned up for the performances created a very happy glow for all involved. Meanwhile, our year group debating team of Jovana Alavanja, Diana Matti, Marni Stanley, and Clodia Kifarkis have been set the challenge of defeating Bossley Park. We wish them well! Finally, the Athletics Carnival this term has been another two days of blood, sweat and tears. Many students entered themselves into multiple events and exhausted themselves in the name of athletic excellence. Perhaps some budding athletes aren‘t quite ready for the London Olympics, but could the 2016 Games be the one that puts Fairfield on the map.

YEAR 10 REPORT WITH MR singh

Term 2 has been extremely busy kicking off with the ANZAC ceremony in the first week. On the 8th of May, 20 of our students were involved in Stockland Mock-Trial Interview Skills. Students paired up with business mentors and gained interview skills regarding job interviews. In Week 5 students did the half yearly exams, followed by IEP‘s. This was quite successful as it gave extra time for students to attend and plan for their senior classes and career paths. Students also had great fun and participated actively in the school athletics carnival. Indeed we all were blessed with very fine weather for both the days. In addition to this, various other activities took place for example; WotOpera, Year 10 Study Skills Day organised by the University of Sydney (Compass Program), iTrack, Fast Forward, University of Western Sydney-Parramatta Campus, and Science Sydney University Excursion. Year 10 end of year excursion is once again Jamberoo Theme Park and will happen on the 6th of December and is open to all Year 10 students, however limited spaces are available and the first 50 students making full payment will be attending this excursion. Our school has also been selected to participate in Board of Studies Record of School Achievement (RoSA) this year representing South Western Sydney Region (SWSR). Twenty two Year 10 students are undertaking this pilot program.

Moreover, students were shown a RoSA PowerPoint presentation in the Formal Assembly this term.

YEAR 12 REPORT WITH MR Haythornthwaite

Year 12 have ‗grasped the nettle‘ this term and it has been impressive to see so many students working hard and putting extra time into their studies and major works for various subjects. It has been common to see students in their familiar Twenty 12 jackets arriving well before the bell on cold mornings to attend extension classes and working away in wood work rooms or completing further study into the late afternoon. It has also been impressive to see and hear students talk about their plans for their future after school with optimism and a strong sense of worth. Year 12 students have also continued to involve themselves in the many extra-curricular activities occurring at school. The Year 12 debating team are to be congratulated for their outstanding performances in the Premier‘s Debating Challenge. The team, which includes Anna Tran, Sadina Tursunovic, Elaine Yeo and Selma Tursunovic, went undefeated to the semi-final before they were unfortunately eliminated by Prairiewood High School. The girls have been debating together since Year 7 and have been outstanding representatives for Fairfield High School. Masudi Elongo is also to be congratulated for excelling in sport this term. Masudi placed first in the school and zone cross country carnivals and third at the Sydney South West area carnival. He will represent Sydney South West at the NSW Combined High Schools State Cross Country Carnival in July. Masudi was also an outstanding performer for the Open Boys Football Team as well as representing Fairfield High School at the Zone Athletics Carnival in Week 9. Ninway Yousif and Tommy Lam have demonstrated excellent commitment and leadership as Year 12 representatives of the Fairfield High School WotOpera performing arts group. Ninway and Tommy, along with another 26 students from Years 8-11 created the story line, words and music for a

mini opera which they performed at the Seymour Centre in Sydney on the Friday night of Week 8 this term. This event was a huge success and has featured on a number of ABC TV programs recently. Ninway has also applied for the WotOpera camp in Hobart which will run for a week in September. The camp involves classes with professionals in singing, composition, stagecraft and creative writing and graduates receive 25% credit towards a university degree in music performance.

Year 12 students have continued to save lives in Term 2. Nedine Naleba, Kim Vo, Cassie Chea, Jessie Bryant, Shawel Nicola, Ninos Yacoub, Davina Yokhanna, Ashor Zaya, Eh Soe Gay Zu, Sue Skaros and Claudio Cortelazzi have all selflessly given blood through the Red Cross Blood Bank this term and deserve a bloody good ―GOOD ON YOU!‖ Year 12 students have also continued to contribute their time and effort to the various fund raising initiatives for their Graduation and Formal events later this year. It has been great to see so many students involving themselves in selling chocolates, helping with the indoor soccer competition and participating in Crazy Hair Day. Term 2 ends with the Year 12 coordinated school disco which promises to be a great night.

SUPPORT UNIT REPORT WITH MS SOARES-DAMIAO

The Support Unit could not have been busier this term! It is fantastic to see how far the students have come. Some are surfing with the likes of Stephanie Gilmore while others are fighting crime, advising the Dalai Lama on world peace issues or meeting with Albert Einstein and splitting some atoms as well as assisting the Queen and President Obama with politics and other world matters…Yes, all this while competing in Athletics Carnivals, performing onstage during Youth Week, being Best Buddies to mainstream students and keeping the garden project alive and kicking! First up, Best Buddies update 2012 by Ms. Newman. Best Buddies kicked off with a flying start this year with a leadership camp and conference at Galston Gorge. Brooke Luketic, Arif Erem, Jade Coulton and Sebestian Acosta participated in the camp along with approximately 8 other schools. They participated in activities to develop their leadership skills and were able to network with students from other schools in the process. Students also listened to guest

motivational speakers including the recent winners from 'The Block".

The Best Buddies Crew continues to grow with now over 20 students participating. We wish to make a warm welcome to Ms Gallager, who has come on board to help out. In the pipeline, students are planning a fundraising activity and are looking at activities that they can all participate in together. Watch this space for more exciting Best Buddies news!

I congratulate these students for putting in their best effort during these events. Also, I would like to acknowledge their good manners

and respectful behaviour while traveling and to the venue. So, I guess mentioning Eistein above gave it away. No the students didn‘t actually get to meet Mr. Obama in person, but they did visit Madame Tussauds Wax Musseum as part of their Life Skills program and here‘s what they had to say: Recount by Bill Nunez ―On Friday the 1st June we went to Madame Tusauds Wax Museum. I couldn't wait to see all of the props and wax figures. We saw other historical figures, like Ned Kelly and Mary Mackillop. I wasn't interested in her, but I was really interested in Cook and Kelly because: a) Kelly's an outlaw and b) Cook was one of the few sailors to discover Australia. We went to the world leaders section, where we saw the leaders from other countries, like Barrack Obama and Julia Gillard. ― Recount by David Johns ―We went to the Wax Museum on the 1st of June to improve our skills to travel and behave in public. I saw Jackie Chan, the great fighter. He won a tournament in 1978... We had a great time at the wax museum.‖ Nicholas Alonso‘s recount: ―The museum was divided into sections. There was a history, world leaders, sports, music, culture, TV studio, film and a list party section. We saw Iron Man, Jacky Chan and Ned Kelly. In the celebrity section there was Lady Gaga, Christina Agruella, Michel Jackson, Maddona, Danny Minogue and her sister. ― - Life Skills supervising teacher Mrs. Bryce.

On Wednesday the 13th of June we had a very special visit from the NSW Police Force. Constable Vanessa McGrath brought her partner Jet along to meet the students. Jet is a Labrador and special police dog that has been trained to find drugs. The students had a chance to watch Jet in action and ask Constable McGrath questions about the Police Force‘s work, Jet‘s training and dog care.

Finally, I would like to congratulate the Fairfield Dance Crew as they were honoured during Youth Week for their skills and bravery performing in front of hundreds of people, including their peers. The Support Unit would also like to thank the community of Fairfield High for supporting our projects such as ironing and gardening. Be sure to come down to the garden and see the crops growing. Also, a special congratulatory mention to the Year 7 students, who have settled very well and are achieving promising results this semester. Have a good break everyone.

On April 25th Year 9 Elective History presented the Anzac day ceremony. The class had previously prepared speeches and organized the ceremony. After the second period had ended the school gathered in the quadrangle for the ceremony. Mr. Petrakis had already put up the posters when the speakers had come to the stage. The speakers were Alexandra, Zeshan, Amy and Tara. Speeches were made and Amy introduced the guest speaker, Paul Bryant. He spoke about Anzac casualties from the Fairfield area and he also spoke about a new project the RSL club was conducting in memory of the fallen Anzacs. The school was very well behaved as the last post, a minute‘s silence, the rouse and the national anthem were played. In conclusion to the ceremony Mr. Mulas and Paul Bryant took a photo with the speakers and the decorations were put away. At period five, to congratulate Year 9 Elective History for their performance Mr. Petrakis took us to McDonald‘s for all the hard work Year 9 Elective History put into the ceremony. By: Tara Rowley and Jessica Grover (Year 9 Elective History) Address by Paul Bryant Vice President Fairfield RSL Sub Branch I again thank you for the opportunity and privilege of presenting the ANZAC Day address this morning. Two of the greatest characteristics of the ANZAC Spirit are Service and Mateship, both of which have been demonstrated by the residents of Fairfield from the Boer War (1899 – 1902) to the present. In total, almost 1,700 Fairfield residents, who served in conflicts, have now passed away. 192 of those fought in WW1; 1,125 in WW2; 86 in Korea; 88 in Borneo and Malaya; 177 in Vietnam; and many still serving overseas today. Including our surviving veterans from

those wars and campaigns (that is current members of various sub-Branches), approximately 1,300 more, that means that the Fairfield area has provided 3,000+ men and women who have served their country, and their mates, since 1899 to the present. To make that number something that you are able to compare to, it would equal to the entire student populations of Fairfield High School and Fairfield Primary School combined, having served during conflicts. Roughly, the entire student population of this High School having died during or since the Boer War to the Vietnam War. In total 23 Fairfield residents saw servicemen killed in action in only two of those conflicts, namely 21 in WW! And 2 in Vietnam. The number of Bravery Awards presented to Fairfield residents for their service to their mates were: WW1 4 (3 x MMs and 1 x DCM) WW2 7 (1 x MID, 1 x Croix de Guerre with Bronze Star, 1x BEM, 1 x DSM, 1 x DCM, 1 x MBE, 1 x Polish Cross of Valour) and 12 x POW‘s. Korea Nil Borneo/Malaya Nil Vietnam 1 x MM Total 12 All of this service, especially to their mates sprang from their schooling, sense of community spirit and allowing other people, sometimes from countries that they had not even heard of to enjoy the freedom that we today take for granted. This is the same freedom that our current servicemen and servicewomen are fighting to preserve. Not only for Australia, but for Afghanistan, and every nation where our troops currently serve. Fairfield RSL Memorial Club in conjunction with the City of Fairfield Council, are currently

involved in a project to remember those Fairfield residents who have served their country, and have since passed away. Honour Avenue in the park behind the club over the next two years will have an etched paver for every Fairfield ex-serviceman or womwn who has served and since passed away. Those of special note, such as those killed in action, prisoners of war, awarded bravery medals, etc, will be separate to the main bodies of pavers for that particular war or conflict. For example, one man served as a trooper in the Boer War, a Merchant Mariner in WW1, an Air Raid Warden in WW2, or 46 years of service in uniform. These may become persons for future by you, the future Historians of Fairfield. You may wish to trace the history of individuals, the families who volunteered in consecutive conflicts, individual battles, individual units predominant from the Fairfield area, or the overall reasons and outcomes of war.Whichever you may decide, remember that those men and women fought for your freedom, and have since passed away and deserve your ongoing honour and respect. Thank you for listening so intently. Lest We Forget.

“The inquisitive mind of a child” Why are they selling poppies, Mummy? Selling poppies in town today. The poppies child, are flowers of love. For the men who marched away. But why have they chosen a poppy, Mummy? Why not a beautiful rose?

Because my child, men fought and died in the fields where poppies grow. But why are the poppies so red, Mummy? Why are the poppies so red? Red is the colour of blood, my child. The blood our soldiers shed. The heart of the poppy is black. Mummy? Why does it have to be black? Black, my child is the symbol of grief. For the men who never came back. But why, Mummy are you crying so? Your tears are giving me your pain. My tears are my fears for you my child. For the world is forgetting again. Sprigs of Rosemary A small shrub Australians use on their roast dinners has become a symbol for remembering our fallen and those who have fought for our freedom. Rosemary is a small perennial shrub of the mint family. It is green with clusters of small light blue flowers and leaves that renders a beautiful aroma used for making perfumes and flavouring foods. According to folklore, the Virgin Mary rested and spread her cloak over a white flowering rosemary bush. The flowers turned the blue of her cloak, and from then on the bush was referred to as ―Rose of Mary‖. In ancient times, rosemary was worn by the Greeks and other to help them remember their studies. This symbol has carried on to ANZAC Day when we wear a small sprig of rosemary as a way of remembering our servicemen and women who have fought in all conflicts for this country.

SYDNEY UNI - ASPIRING BUSINESS LEADERS PROGRAM The Sydney University‘s Aspiring Leaders Program on Thursday 12 April provided great insight into university life. Selected students from various schools participated in the Program. Fairfield High School was represented by Anh-Cuong Kha, Anthony Nguyen and Elaine Yeo. The informative lectures provided by Sydney University‘s finest professors combined the Business Studies, Legal Studies and Economics HSC courses. The students were able to use Sydney University‘s facilities and resources, getting a taste of the environment of the campus and prestigious Business School. To test their business knowledge and entrepreneurial skills, a team task on a Qantas case study had concluded the day. The participating Business Studies students of Fairfield High School now have a ‗competitive advantage‘ that have motivated them into a tertiary business education and career thanks to this Program.

ProjectABLE On Tuesday 5th June 8 students attended the ProjectABLE workshop in Parramatta. At this workshop we were able to experience hands on activities which gave us an insight into the daily lives of a person with a disability. These activities included getting dressed with one hand and the opportunity to experience life without our sight. During this activity we had to wear a specially altered pair of sunglasses that were covered with two pieces of cardboard to prevent us from seeing. While we had these glasses on we had to try to send a text message. Have you ever tried to open a Mars bar with one hand – not your dominant one. It is very difficult. Experiencing a day in the life of a person with a disability made us really stop and think about how fortunate we truly are. By Jade Coulton

Term 2 has been great for the Welfare Team following a variety of programs and events running throughout the term that the students have found thoroughly enjoyable and beneficial. R.A.G.E Program A special program for Years 7 - 11 called ―RAGE‖ is running at Fairfield High School this term. ―RAGE‖ is a social skills and Anger Management program, which promotes self-confidence, self-control, self -respect and encourages goal setting in regards to their schooling. The program ran on 7 weekly sessions every Monday, starting on the 7th of May, 2012. Young UN Women Australia Sydney Chapter 2012 Outreach Leadership Forums – Education, Empowerment & Equality Fairfield High School was invited to send three students (one student from Year 7, Year 8, and Year 9 respectively) and an accompanying teacher to attend and participate in our 2012 Metropolitan Leadership Forum, which was held this year on 29 May 2012 at the Revesby Worker‟s Club. For the first time, YUNWAS invited both boys and girls to participate in this year‘s forum, which will host 126 students from 42 schools in South and South West Sydney. The theme for the 2012 forum was: You, You in the Community, You in the World and aimed to educate and empower junior students from public schools in the region and significantly bolster support for gender equity at both a local community and state level. Luke Lovero (Year 7), Diana Matti (Year 8), and Amy Tran (Year 9) attending the Forum representing Fairfield High School. (Thank you to Ms. S. Maric who attended the forum). Bonnie Women‟s Refuge Program Nada Mohamed a Community Development Worker at Bonnie Women‘s Refuge has been conducting a workshop with Year 10 Girls every Tuesday Periods 3 and 4, raising awareness in schools about healthy and unhealthy relationships. The program is designed to build on their skills and encourage healthy relationships and teaching the girls how to identify an unhealthy one. National Reconciliation Week National Reconciliation Week (NRW) is celebrated across Australia each year between 27 May and 3 June. The dates commemorate two significant milestones in the reconciliation journey—the anniversaries of the successful

1967 referendum and the High Court Mabo decision. The week is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures and achievements and to explore how each of us can join the national reconciliation effort. May 27 marks the anniversary of Australia‟s most successful referendum and a defining event in our nation‘s history. The 1967 referendum saw over 90 per cent of Australians vote to give the Commonwealth the power to make laws for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and recognise them in the national census. 2012 marks the 45th anniversary of the ‘67 referendum. On 3 June, 1992, the High Court of Australia delivered its landmark Mabo decision which legally recognised that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have a special relationship to the land—that existed prior to colonisation and still exists today. This recognition paved the way for land rights called Native Title. This year is the 20th anniversary of the Mabo decision.

The theme for this year is Let‟s Talk Recognition — with a focus on how Australians can better recognise each other, and recognises the contributions, cultures and histories of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

Fairfield High School also acknowledged ‗National Sorry Day‘. National Sorry Day is an Australia-wide observance held on May 26 each year. This day gives people the chance to come together and share the steps towards healing for the Stolen Generations, their families and communities. Stolen generations refer to Indigenous Australians who were forcibly removed from their families and communities. National Sorry Day Taryn Beatty was our special guest presenter on Monday 28th of May at the School‘s morning assembly. Taryn is of both Torres Strait Island and Aboriginal descent and she addressed the school assembly on what ‗National Sorry Day‘ represents, why we celebrate ‗Reconciliation Week‘, and also informing students about the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island Flags.

The Aboriginal flag and the Torres Strait Islander flag are often seen on National Sorry Day. The Aboriginal flag is horizontally divided into two equal halves of black (top) and red (bottom) with a yellow circle in the centre. The black symbolizes Australia‘s Aboriginal people and the yellow circle represents the sun. The red represents the earth and people‘s relationship with the land. It also represents ochre, which is used in Aboriginal ceremonies in Australia. Harold Joseph Thomas designed the flag, which was first flown at Victoria Square in Adelaide on July 12, 1971.

The Torres Strait Islander flag stands for Torres Strait Islanders‘ unity and identity. It features three horizontal stripes, with green at the top and bottom of the flag and blue in between, divided by thin black lines. A white dharri or deri (a type of headdress) sits in the centre, with a five-point star underneath it. The color green represents the land. The dharri symbolizes all Torres Strait Islanders. The black represents the people and the blue represents the sea. The five-point star symbolizes the island groups. The star is white, which symbolizes peace in this case. Bernard Namok designed the flag. Student Support Officer The Student Support Officer, Ms Zekas has co-ordinated and co-facilitated several groups and programs specifically aimed at improving student well-being with a strong emphasis on promoting awareness and skills in addressing bullying in the school. Cool Connections Youth Workers from local NGO, Community First Step, have been running a program called ‗Cool Connections – Cool Relationships‘. This program is funded by a range of Government and non-Government agencies with the primary objective being to assist students in fostering and building healthy relationships through focusing on making positive choices and developing skills in personal safety, conflict resolution and communication. The program meets the needs for healthy environments that are fundamental to children‘s survival, physical growth and emotional development. B-Teen A joint initiative between SLASA, Assyrian Resource Centre, Multicultural Health Service/Fairfield and Fairfield Liverpool Youth Health Team (FLYHT) has resulted in a program called B-Teen, a dynamic and creative program facilitated by local Youth Worker Mathew Peet. This program promotes awareness of various issues faced by young people through talks given by local police and allied health practitioners, as well as providing a space for individual expression through dance, rap, and drawing. The culmination of which has meant participating students have had the opportunity to explore their creativity in new ways and build a stronger sense of kinship with one another. Anti-Bullying Research The University of Western Sydney‘s Centre for Positive Psychology and Education has continued running their evidence-based Anti-Bullying Program through the school this term. This program is based on a research project conducted by the University of Western Sydney, in partnership with NSW Police Force, and funded by Federal Government. The objectives are to combat bullying and violence in high schools with an innovative whole-school anti-bullying, anti-violence program, employing the consistent application of the ‗Stop, Help, Tell‘ intervention devised by UWS. All staff received training and resources to assist in both their own understanding of how to manage bullying incidents as well as how to teach students to respond appropriately. The students have participated in surveys and all year groups have received specific lessons over the course of the term. The anticipated outcome is a dramatic reduction in bullying if the intervention is applied consistently by the whole school team.

Yoga In addition to these programs, the SSO, Ms Zekas has brought her training as a Yoga Teacher to Fairfield High School and introduced stress management and yoga classes for the Year 11‘s and 12‘s. Due to interest from several teachers she is looking at running lunch time classes for staff in Term 3.

NRMA „Safe Schools, Safe Community Grant Another innovative component of the whole school Anti-Bullying plan has been the ‗Safe Schools, Safe Community‘ program, funded by a grant from NRMA. This program has focused on crime prevention and the various aspects involved in building a safer community, and has done so by: providing students with crime prevention tips and knowledge of how they can contribute to a safer school and community; targeting at risk students and providing them with strategies and skills to deal with challenges; increasing knowledge amongst parents and carers of the role of the Australian Police, and our rights and responsibilities as safe citizens; informing parents/carers of how to access assistance for legal advice and court procedures; and providing opportunities for police and youth dialogue and positive relationship building. This has occurred in various settings such as year assemblies for Years 9 - 11 where the local police have held information and dialogue sessions with students, a whole school BBQ and sporting games between local police and students from Fairfield High School, a boys‘ and a girls‘ camp run by STARTTS and Fairfield Police, and parent information sessions. Refugee Week Celebrations Refugee Week is Australia's peak annual activity to inform the public about refugees and celebrate positive contributions made by refugees to Australian society. In 2012, Refugee Week will be celebrated from Sunday 17 June to Saturday 23 June, to coincide with World Refugee Day (June 20). The theme for Refugee Week 2012 is Restoring Hope. Fairfield High School will be celebrating this week with the IEC performing in North Parramatta and a special guest presenter ―Tiffany Barton‘, performing the ‗Lucky Country‘. About Refugee Week Refugee Week is Australia's peak annual activity to inform the public about refugees and celebrate positive contributions made by refugees to Australian society. The event has been celebrated in Australia since 1986 and RCOA has been responsible for the coordination of Refugee Week in NSW since 2005. Refugee Week provides a platform where positive images of refugees can be promoted in order to create a culture of welcome throughout the country. The ultimate aim of the celebration is to create better understanding between different

communities and to encourage successful integration enabling refugees to live in safety and to continue making a valuable contribution to Australia. Over the past 15 years, Refugee Week celebrations have developed in a number of other countries. While there are minor differences in the dates for Refugee Week, all include World Refugee Day (June 20). In Australia, Refugee Week is scheduled to ensure that it does not clash with public holidays in any Australian state or territory. The aims of Refugee Week are:

to educate the Australian public about who refugees are and why they have come to Australia; to help people understand the many

challenges refugees face coming to Australia; to celebrate the contribution refugees make

to our community;

to focus on how the community can provide a safe and welcoming environment for refugees;

for community groups and individuals to do something positive for refugees, asylum seekers and displaced people, within Australia but also around the world;

for service providers to reflect on whether they are providing the best possible services to refugees. Refugee Week is a unique opportunity for us all to experience and celebrate the rich diversity of refugee communities through theatre, music, dance, film and other events which take place all over Australia and highlight the aims of the Week, as outlined above. Refugee Week is an umbrella participatory festival which allows a wide range of refugee community organisations, voluntary and statutory organisations, local councils, schools, student groups and faith-based organisations to host events during the week. Past events have included football tournaments, public talks, exhibitions, music and dance festivals, theatre projects and film screenings. Everyone is welcome to participate in promoting the aims of Refugee Week – the more the merrier! Through Refugee Week we aim to provide an important opportunity for asylum seekers and refugees to be seen, listened to and valued. Mr Brown - Head Teacher Welfare.

... helping parents teach their Learner driver

As a parent you may be a good driver; but being able to teach your Learner is not an easy task.

A recent national survey of more than 1,250 parents of Learner drivers found that almost half (45.5%) were nervous or apprehensive when they began teaching their teen how to drive.

keys2drive is a federally funded program that has been developed by the Australian Automobile Association which aims to take the drama out of learning to drive. It helps parents to prepare for their role as a supervising driver and to ensure that any time spent in the car with their Learner is successful and effective.

keys2drive is a free lesson (involving theory and on-road) delivered by an accredited professional driving instructor to any Learner who is accompanied by their supervising driver – most often a parent.

This program, the single largest Learner driver safety program undertaken in Australia, represents a unique and valuable experience for parents and their Learner drivers.

Focus on Reading (FoR) FoR continues to work its ways through our Year 7 classes. Students are developing their comprehension skills as they continue to grow into independent and insightful readers. Both staff and students are enjoying the new skills learnt through the program. FoR has been introduced through the primary school across the SWS region. To complement our journey in the program, 12 teachers from Fairfield Primary School came to visit on Tuesday June 12 to see FoR in action in the secondary setting. The teachers who saw many familiar faces were very impressed with the engagement and independence of our Year 7 students.

2012 is the National Year of Reading. As part of our FoR program and partnership with Fairfield Primary, we will be joining hands as we celebrate reading throughout our August Book Fair in Week 6 Term 3 (August 20-24). Stay tuned for more information! Ms Conray HT National Partnerships Naplan Testing Students in Years 7 and 9 sat for the National Assessment Program - Literacy & Numeracy

(NAPLAN) in May, in line with students throughout Australia, over a 3 day period. This testing builds upon results from Years 3 & 5 in the areas of Language/Grammar, Writing, Reading & Numeracy. Overall the attendance was excellent during this week: in Year 7 there was only one student absent for the three days of testing.

Year 9 testing was held in the auditorium, while Year 7 students were supervised by their English teachers over the 3 days of testing. The students were excellent during this period & are to be commended for their general demeanour. The school looks forward to some excellent results in September when the report to parents & schools is released. Each parent will receive a full report for EMSAD (Educational Measurement and School Accountability Directorate) reporting on the progress of their child, in relation to the results of the school, the region & the state. When the results are released the school will be hosting an explanation session to explain feedback supplied to parents of these students.

Inter-school Debating/Public Speaking Debating and Public Speaking Competitions have commenced this term. We have six teams entered in the Premier‘s Debating Competition, from Years 7 through to 12. Thanks to Ms Ajla Bagic of the Social Science faculty for taking on the mentoring and organisation of the debating teams from Years 9 & 10. Also to Mr Tony Petrakis for working with the Year 11 team.

Year 12 deserve special mention as they have won four consecutive debate; the first 3 rounds, followed by the Zone Quarter Finals, where the team trounced Belmore Boys High School. As this newsletter goes to print we await information as to which school we will meet in the next round. Congratualtions to Sadina Tursunovic, Selma Tursunovic, Anna Tran and Elaine Yeo for their great efforts and success this year. We will be hosting the State Final for the Year 12 competition. I look forward to our students witnessing this high quality competition. There will also be students involved in public speaking competitions in the coming months. We wish all the teams and individual competitors the best of luck.

Smartartz Workshops With Years 7 & 8 Classes For those of you wondering how to pronounce it the above company is pronounced SMART ARTS. We have been targeted as a school that would benefit from participating in a variety of theatrical workshops. This has allowed the students to be involved in whole day workshops at no cost, where outside performers have come to the school & assisted the students in writing, editing, auditioning for, performing in & ultimately filming their own script. Fairfield HS have been lucky enough to be included in a workshop on four occasions already this year & we are set to experience more sessions in Term 3. This has been a great opportunity for students to showcase their talents & be involved in a production of real artistic merit. Thus far this year 7 Prospect, 7 Kenyon, 8 Blue and 7 Horsley have enjoyed this opportunity.

WotOpera Wot/what does this mean, you may ask? A group of approximately twenty students from Years 8 through to 12 have enjoyed the thrilling experience of writing an opera, composing the music, singing, acting, dancing and producing an opera from start to fruition. Over a period of five consecutive Wednesdays we have had at our disposal; a theatre director, music director, artistic director and professional photographer/film maker to record our journey. The students have worked as a strong team, developing confidence and skills along the way. It has been a pleasure to observe them. Special thanks to Mr Patrick Honyak, music

teacher, for his ongoing support of the students. The ‗Wot‘ belongs to ‗WOTIF‘, the website build by Graham Wood, the benefactor and philanthropist who has made this experience possible. He actually visited the school while the ABC 7.30 Report was filming the students for a story/program which was aired on June 8, on the ABC. At the same time as our students were performing their opera at the Seymour Centre. This has been an inspirational program for our students. Ms Weber

Year 9 Laptops This term, Year 9 laptops were recalled due to Lenovo identifying loose cabling and a faulty fan component, which causes the laptop to shut down intermittently. This process took approximately two weeks to service all laptops, and return them to students. Year 9 students deserve to be commended on their cooperation with the process: approximately 97% of laptops were collected and serviced. For various reasons, a few laptops were not submitted for servicing. These need to be handed in to Mr Limbu as soon as possible, because if the fault emerges in those laptops at a later date, the work will not be carried out under warranty. Year 9 teachers and students report that the DER laptops are been used regularly and in a variety of ways in the classroom. Students are encouraged to use Onenote, and Smart Notebook to record and present their assignments. There are many Web2 tools which are useful for students: look on the school website under the Learning Resource Centre (the Library), where Mr Downie has listed useful sites that relate to most school topics and years. All Year 9 students are expected to bring their laptops to school fully charged every day and to adhere to the school‘s internet usage policy. Students are advised to have an 8 gig flash disc with which to back up their work. Printing of students‟ work at school The school understands that not all homes have a printer for students to print out assignments. It is not encouraged that students come to faculties (staff rooms) to ask teachers to print out work. The library is open before school, recess and lunch for students to have work printed out. Students are advised to not leave it until the day the assignment is due to organise for it to be printed. This is because occasionally the library is closed to students due to special events. Warranty The DER laptops have only two years of warranty. This means that currently, both Year

11 and Year 12 laptops are out of warranty. Any service required will cost a $249 flat fee, which is to be paid at the school front office. If the laptop is under warranty, there are many things which the Dept will not service for free. For example, a cracked screen, or missing keys from the keyboard are considered damage, not malfunction, and will cost families $249 to repair. If students lose their laptop, they need to report it as soon as possible to Mr Limbu, who is located in H Block. Return of laptops A reminder: the DER laptops were issued to students under the condition that they stay at school until they have finished Year 12. If students leave school before the completion of Year 12, the laptop must be returned to the school. If students change schools, they can keep their laptop if they are attending another state school. But if students are going to a private or catholic school, they need to return the laptop to the school. With many students from the IEC enrolling in the high school throughout the school year, we are short of laptops to issue them. It is extremely important that laptops be returned to the school, as the need is so great. Electronic „Roll Marking‟ The Dept is trialling a new system this year to track all DER laptops. In the past, the procedure was that once a year, all laptops were collected and re commissioned to the students. The laptops were logged, and discrepancies exposed. However, from June 11th, 2012, what is required is that every student is to bring their laptop to school and log on to the school network (Wireless: nswdet). This way, the Dept can remotely do an electronic roll call and is able to log each laptop. During the fortnight following June 11th (week 8 and week 9) all students will need to log on to the nswdet network at school. If students have any issues with their connection, they need to see Mr Limbu in H block as soon as possible. Ms K. Hannigan Head Teacher Technology

National Partnerships –Student Support It has been a wonderful term with many exciting learning opportunities planned for students, staff and parents. We continue to address our school targets in the school strategic plan and the National Partnerships key reforms areas. As part of the work being done during Term 2 we continue to invest in the partnerships continuum model illustrated below and in particular in the social and cultural capital in our communities to improve student learning outcomes at Fairfield High School. As our community partnerships strengthen and our networks grow it is evident that there is an important interrelationship between our school and key partners in education.

As part of the Future Directions Network Program targeted classes from Years 8-11 have enjoyed the guest speaker presentation program with high profile University graduates from a diverse range of back grounds and professions came to share their knowledge and

skills about aspiring to higher education and how they achieved their chosen pathways. All of the guest speakers from FDN are from South Western Sydney Region and this makes them great role models for our students. Thanks to Irene Pediotis (CPA Accountant), Ashleigh Payne (Executive Australian Navy), and Tania Huynh (studying Law and Business at UTS). It was a privilege to have them share their stories and wisdom with our students. The Future Directions Program

Our students and their parents attended this exciting FDN parent information night held at Revesby Workers‟ Club Star Bulldogs Rugby League player Corey Payne teamed up with University of Sydney staff and students on Wednesday 9 May to encourage young people from Sydney's south-western suburbs to take on university.

More than 650 people went to Revesby Workers' Club to meet current students from the area, including Payne, and ask questions about applying to the University, scholarships, costs, and admissions requirements. Mr Payne was the Master of Ceremonies and shared his personal experiences in completing his undergraduate and now post graduate study at the University of Sydney. Representatives from the University of Sydney were present and answered all types of questions in relation to studying at the University of Sydney. The FDN aims to inform, inspire and educate students from South West Sydney in attaining higher education. A key component of the FDN

program is to make information about tertiary education more accessible. "This is great opportunity for students to find their path to university. Parents are particularly encouraged to attend to learn more about university life, fees, courses and degrees", Mr Payne suggested. Academic Excellence Award-Sydney University Congratulations to Paulo Greaves Year 11 who was awarded an Academic Excellence award in May 2012 for his outstanding achievements in Year 10. We wish Paulo the very best in his senior years and in his future pathway. Compass Sydney University Year 11 Thinking Ahead program Congratulations to the 26 year 11 students who completed the 'Thinking Ahead' workshop. Compass is launching this new

workshop for Year 11 students to introduce the university scholarship process. The aim is to encourage students to think ahead before entering their final year in high school about what they might need to do to be a successful scholarship applicant. After the presentation, the University ambassadors answered all sorts of questions from the thirty high school students about university in general and life after university. The scholarship session was followed by a career workshop run by Sydney Business School. The workshop aimed to provide more information to students about career possibilities, develop a deeper understanding of different career paths and the role that higher education can play. The students were also challenged to think about what might drive their decisions about career. One of the small group exercises students were asked identify the three most important priorities in their life. A lively discussion took place, as the students attempted to prioritise money, family, spirituality, career, travel, learning, adventure, culture and finding balance in life. Each group then presented to the class their top three and explained their decisions.

Fencing, Fur and Fairfield: Year 7 campus visit to the University of Sydney Congratulations to all of the Year students who attended the Year 7 Campus visit. Fairfield High School Year 7 students had the opportunity to experience what university life has to offer. Coming from schools with populations in the hundreds, the students experienced learning as university students do on a campus of thousands.

The day started in one of the oldest lecture theatres in Australia, the Quad History Room with an introductory presentation from Compass staff, followed by the ARC Centre of Excellence for the History of Emotion with an interactive examination of different facial expressions. Great weather made it the perfect occasion for a campus tour, with University student ambassadors guiding the group around the campus's many heritage buildings. At the Macleay Museum, furry animals fascinated with students pausing from taking photos only to ask question after question about the collection

- one student said that he wanted to take the mammoth home and put it in his room! Sydney Uni Sport and Fitness coordinated a fencing demonstration and training for the students on the Quadrangle lawns that neatly combined a history lesson with opportunities for practical - and fun! CONGRATULATIONS to the Year 12 students involved in the U@UNSW program in 2012. The U@UNSW program focuses on improving access to UNSW for low socio economic or educationally disadvantaged background students. As part of the program senior High school students attend 2 x 3 day conferences at UNSW and participate in university style lectures and tutorials and engage with the university environment through fun interactive activities. Attending Students from Year 12

U@UNSW Ambassadors assist at this conference and perform a range of tasks from assisting in class activities, facilitating a variety of confidence and leadership building activities with students as well as assisting with the logistics of event management. Volunteer ambassadors develop skills in areas of leadership, communication, teamwork, and community engagement. Through being involved, students will also become aware of difference and disadvantage in our community. It is these differences that become the driving force for change, and community development. This program is provided by Student Development - Participation & Engagement. In 2012, conferences happen between 11/04/2012 to 13/04/2012 and 04/07/2012 to 06/07/2012. The overall duration of this program is about 42 hours. Find out more here - http://www.thehub.unsw.edu.au/whatson/volunteerops.html

Life in the burbs/life in the outback – what‘s the difference? What‘s the same? Young people from Fairfield and our regional sister city of Griffith are exchanging stories, ideas and perceptions of growing up in quite different parts of Australia. Racing headlong into production mode, the Connections team has created a powerful performance responding to the shared ideas and stories from either side of the great divide. PRESS PLAY: Who are we if we‘re not on TV? Or Facebook? This show asks how young people today manage to bring together all their various identities, and take control of how they are seen. We look forward to show night 7pm, Friday 29th June, at the Casula Powerhouse Arts Centre, and the Special School‘s Matinee at 1pm Thursday 28th June, Partners – PYT and Outback Theatre for Young People, Griffith Regional Theatre and Casula Powerhouse, Fairfield High School and Lurnea High School IEC. Thanks to Ms E Lykourezos PDHPE Department for her hard work in this fantastic project and congratulations to her year 10

Dance class in particular those students directly involved in the project CULTURAL Exchange Program 2012 Through the Multicultural Unit's Equity Portfolio funding available earlier in 2012, Fairfield and Lurnea High Schools were both successful in acquiring funding for the cultural exchange program at $2700 and $ 2100 respectively. The excursion to Griffith is the culmination of a much larger "twinning" project called Secret Places: The Connections Project that has been going since Term 4 2011, a collaboration between Lurnea and Fairfield High School with Powerhouse Youth Theatre and Griffith and Wade High School with Outback Youth Theatre. Communication and sharing of stories, ideas and questions have taken place between through skyping, video conferencing, and sending videos, photos, drawings, letters and presents. Each group is also working on a multi-media drama performance, which, for the Sydney students will show at the Casula Powerhouse Theatre at the end of June. Last month, with the help of rural funding, the Griffith students came to Sydney for three days and shared a drama and film session at Lurnea School and visited Fairfield School. Going to visit Griffith is a great outcome, as especially as it will occur during Refugee Week, and most of the students are newly arrived refugees, and the others are migrants who have come through the IEC also. The day after our return, Lurnea refugee students will talk at the Liverpool Refugee Forum about their experience of the project and the trip to Griffith. Fairfield Students will also share their experience with the school at a whole school assembly. Thanks to Kate Clarkson and Dan Lukinski from Lurnea High School, Danielle Antaki Artistic Director from PYT and Ms Pam Dunn for their great support of the Cultural Exchange program.

Refugee Award nominations Congratulations to the following students, who are nominees of the Refugee Award Ceremony on the 23rd June, 2012.

Sydney University‟s Compass Program and National Reconciliation Week Year 11 & 12 Indigenous Students' Experience Day Congratulations to our senior Indigenous students for their participation in the Reconciliation Week events. The performance at the Seymour Centre Bindjareb Pinjarra—a brilliant improvised comedy about WA‘s Pinjarra Massacre.was critiqued as ―‗Most effective vehicle for black-white reconciliation you‘ll ever see‘ The University of Sydney hosted thirty Year 11 and 12 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students at the Camperdown campus as a part of National Reconciliation Week. The students started the day with a warm welcome from the Koori Centre where Lynette Riley (Senior Lecturer and Academic Coordinator) gave a brief overview of the academic pathways and support services available to Indigenous students at the

University. Student ambassadors escorted the group across campus to the Seymour Centre for a guided tour of the exhibition Winds of Change from the Boomali Aboriginal Artists Cooperative. Following this, the students were treated to an exceptional performance of Bindjareb Pinjarra by Deckchair Theatre.

With clear blue skies as a backdrop and with just a touch of wind, the students then returned to the main campus where Shane Houston (Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Indigenous Strategy and Services) officially welcomed the students to the University. and the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander flags were raised over the Clock Tower. Following lunch, some students mingled with the Vice-Chancellor of the University, Michael Spence, while others placed their hand in the Sea of Hands public artwork on the Front Lawns. This was the first visit to the campus for many of the students. The Year 11 & 12 Indigenous Students' Experience day is an initiative offered to a wide range of schools across Sydney - working in close partnership with The Smith Family, the Social Inclusion Unit, and the Koori Centre - which aims to nurture the aspirations of and guide Indigenous students towards higher education. Monday's event was followed by a Year 7 & 8 Indigenous Students' Experience day on Wednesday, which was the biggest yet.

Regional Secondary School Conference Natasha Djukic and Talha Khan represented Fairfield in the Sydney South West SRC Conference day. The main topic of the conference was Cyber Bullying. We had to give our ideas on how we can prevent it from happening. Motivational guest speaker Katie shared her stories with us about her bullying experiences. There was a workshop run by Rising Generations on bullying and how it affects people around you. They also played an inspirational video. Overall the day was a success and we enjoyed it. The regional SRC Team came up with a slogan to control cyber bullying- ―Put a boot in bullying‖ Interschool SRC Meeting Natasha Djukic, Sandra Mose and Jeanne Tran represented Fairfield at the SRC Interschool Meeting. At the meeting we all got to know each other before we started. The meeting was about what our school and other schools have already done or will be doing like fundraising, projects, involvement, etc. The other schools were surprised when we told them about our big success for the ‗Be Brave and Shave‖ day. Everyone also voted on positions for the meeting. I was voted Vice Publisher. Overall we had fun and can‘t wait to go to the next meeting. Parliament House Leadership Day On 27th April Selma Tursunovic and Cassandra Chea were privileged to attend the annual SRC Leadership Day along with other school SRC Presidents and Captains at NSW Parliament House. On the day members of local parliament addressed us about the role of leadership and

spoke about their own specific leadership positions. We were taken to the lower and upper house in the NSW parliament where various politicians explained the role of each house and the students were given an insight into the formal proceedings of each house. We also met Marie Bashir the current NSW governor general who addressed the student‘s questions. We then had lunch with the governor general. We gained great insight into how the NSW parliament operates from attending the day. By: Selma Tursunovic

Fairfield High School continues to enjoy its long and exciting relationship with Australian Business and Community Network (ABCN) and this year we are continuing our participation in the GOALS program. The purpose of this program is to allow Year 9 students the opportunities to meet people working outside their immediate community and to consider wider vocational and education options. Structured group mentoring sessions will run throughout the year with the 2012 launch taking place earlier this term. 20 mentors from various companies buddied up with 20 of our aspirational Year 9 students, the beginning of a new journey and possibilities. Our second session was held at the MLC building I Sydney with ‗Goal Setting‘ as the theme of the day. Two students wrote of their experiences: Deveena Kumar The Goals Program was a great learning experience and was a great way to really think about what we could improve on, how and when. During this program we acknowledged the future and all the milestones we may face. The experience was entertaining and fun, we had one on one time with our mentors and discussed what we need to do in order to be successful in the future and how we as

students can do them. We talked about long term and short term goals, and have been learning about a successful future. Overall it was a great experience Jonathan Cooper In the goals program we had fun walking around the QVB (Queen Victoria Building) and going to the NAB House. We learnt about setting long and short term goals. We learnt how to achieve our goals and how to plan our goals. During this experience I learned about the WWH (What is the goal, When is the goal going to be completed, and How will the goal be completed). In this experienced I also enjoyed working with my mentor, eating, and having fun with my friends. It is a great program so far!!! 2012 GOALS participants: Abbas Al-Ameri Vanja Bokovic Christina Carol Jonathon Cooper Cassandra Gabrijian Samir Ghamrawi Victoria Girgis Joseph Habib Isabella Kim Deveena Kumar Brandon Lam Jennifer Luangrath Jimmy Nguyen Khaled Omran Tara Rowley Alyzza Sandaga Isabelle Schubert Marlene Taipari Amy Tran Andy Ye

The Transit of Venus, an important astronomical event occurred on Wednesday, 6th June. Due to poor weather, we could not observe the entire process. In fact, we only saw approximately five minutes of the event. Nonetheless, it was quite fascinating. Around

10am through the telescope an image of a small dark sphere (planet Venus) appeared on the right side of a large white sphere (the Sun). So what is the significance of the Transit of Venus? In the past the data collected had helped many scientists to establish a way to calculate the distance from Earth to the Sun and modern astronomers continue to obtain data from each transit to determine the Astronomical Unit and the atmospherical condition of Venus planet. The Transit of Venus is a very rare occurrence the last one was 8th June 2004, prior to that was December 1874. To witness such an event was a truly unique experience as it will not occur again until October 2117 then December 2125, then another long wait of 121.5 years. Mary Nguyen – Year 11 student

What Mary had to say: ―My perspective of astronomy has broadened significantly from the various events throughout the day. I learned that astronomy offer different interesting and flexible careers. I was fascinated by the simulation of the landscape of Mars that looked very real with rocks and red-brown dirt. The Sydney Observatory allowed me to experiment a computer program that can capture instant images of galaxies and stars in the universe with the help of observatories located in different parts of the world. The section also included a telescope tutorial. It was a privilege for me to be a recipient of the Stellar Scholarship having my family, friend, teacher and deputy principal with me throughout the day, sharing my experiences and making the day more enjoyable and a memorable one‖.

The Western Sydney Parklands are part of the NSW Government's new vision for contemporary, urban living in Western Sydney and are the perfect place to spend the day with family and friends - all without leaving your own backyard. The NSW Government has established the Western Sydney Parklands Trust to be responsible for managing and developing the Parklands. On the 25th of May, 2012 around 30 people from Fairfield High School ventured to Abbotsbury Lizard Log Picnic Ground to help the environment and plant trees for future generations to nourish and to create a new world. Miss Bajic, Ms Lay and Ms Haddad accompanied us while we were planting the new born trees and also assisted us along the way. When we first arrived, it was a mission to get to the top of the hill where our job was soon to begin. There waiting for us were heaps of trees and two people from the local Picnic Ground to talk to us. They told us that there was construction going on around local bushlands and that they were demolishing the sacred grounds. We had to help build and protect the remaining bushlands so that they wouldn‘t be destroyed and that future generations will live to enjoy them. When we

started working, everyone was enthusiastic and enjoyed planting the trees while helping their friends along the way. The teachers were great as well; they were helping out and seemed to be enjoying it as well. We had to first plant the tree into the soil, then grab 3 bamboo sticks and hammer them using a mallet into the ground. We then took a specialised plastic bag and placed it around the plant to protect it from being trampled on and so that when it would rain, the rain would stay absorbed to the plant. It took a long time and a lot of hard work, but we finally got it done and finished planting all the trees. Everyone seemed exhausted and we were all dirty from the mud and dirt around. The park rangers then came up to us and gave a complimentary shirt which had pictures of animals and said ―Local Hero‖ to acknowledge the fact the we had helped save the environment and that we helped save local parklands. We had some spare time left before we had to head back to school, so we decided to head to the park. At the park there was a playground where we were hanging around, there was a big thing that was similar to a flying fox, there was a smaller version, there was a big slide, a spinning machine and some other equipment around. We all had a lot of fun on the flying fox, the teachers joined in as well and we had heaps of fun hanging out with them. We had a great experience and it was a fun day overall. After we finished having fun we headed back to school and hung around until the bell rang. We had an amazing experience and a fun day with our teachers and friends, we‘d love to do it again!

HTA NSW HSC Study Days @ Sydney Uni‟ Over the last days of Week 8, Modern, Ancient and Extension Historians took to the Carslaw lecture theatres at Sydney University to listen to HSC experts for tips and tactics on how to master the exams. Armed with pen and paper, laptops and iphones set on voice recording, we

revised a range of course content and skills, including topics such as Historiography, Core Exam Skills, Herculaneum and Pompeii. Thanks to Mr Curtis, Ms Razko and Mr Petrakis for organizing the day. No doubt it was an invaluable experience that will put us in good stead for the upcoming HSC in Term 4.

Year 7 is at it again with rolls and rolls of toilet paper. As part of their study of Ancient civilization, Seven Horsley investigated what happened to pharaohs in ancient Egypt. They were delighted at facts such as brains being removed through the nose with bone hooks, internal organs being removed from the side of the stomach and the resin drying the entire

body of any liquid. The Year 7‘s were particularly excited about wrapping their friend in toilet rolls pretending as though it was linen, although it was a shame that Year 7‘s didn‘t have amulets to hide in the wrapped body that didn‘t ward them off from having a fantastic time. A big thank you to Ms. Trinh for organising the event.

Mr. Curtis‘s Year 8‘s blew off some steam (through the hole they left in their Tipi) and created authentic Tipi‘s that the Native American Indians would have lived in. We had to master the safety scissors to cut around the template in order to make these iconic

American Indian Homes. We coloured them in traditional hues and then glued them on to several thin sticks to complete our models. It was a great practical activity and we really enjoyed doing the task. Thanks Mr Curtis for a great lesson.

On Wednesday 6th of June Year 11 Modern History attended a conference called ‗Youth Encounters‘. It was an opportunity for our students alongside the students from Kincoppal High, the Shore College and Mariah College to talk about their religious beliefs. There were small group discussions, speeches (See above: Picture of Ahmed and Omar) and even some singing involved in the program. It was a enjoyable encounter where many religious stereotypes and pre-misconceptions were explored and deconstructed. Thanks to Mr. Petrakis for getting us there and Ms. Sayed-Rich for organising the event.

Peer tutoring is a program that is designed to help Year 7 students with their literacy skills. Last year twelve Year 11 students attended Wetherill Park TAFE, on a number of occasions, to learn strategies in order to help year 7 with their reading. Armed with these strategies, each Year 11 student was paired up with a Year 7 student, and during roll call they would read History, Geography and Science texts.

Year 11 were awarded with a TAFE certificate by their tutor Ruth Mahoney (as pictured above), and Year 7 students involved gained reading skills and the friendship of year 11 mentors. Peer Tutoring has been a successful program in our school and we are looking forward to it running again next year. Congrat‘s to our PT students.

Raw Fruit Day at Fairfield High School RAW = Ready Arrive Work, FRUIT = Fun, Realistic, Unbiased Industry Training Last Term in March our school hosted the above mentioned day. This was the final day of a ten week program which 25 Year 10 students had been involved in, called RAW. This program was part of the RTP (Refugee Transition Program) and run by an organisation called Jobquest. There were three other schools from South Western Sydney participating in this event, namely Liverpool Girls HS, Lurnea HS and Canterbury Girls HS. Students were involved in various activities throughout the day such as a panel discussion, where key speakers from a variety of institutions (such as UWS, NSW Police, TAFE, BOS etc.) participated in a relaxed and

informative discussion. Various scenarios and situations were discussed and presented, with each panel member detailing not only how their institution can help immediately, but how pathways can be created between the institutions to allow students to achieve their long term career goals. The students and panellists then participated in a fun, interactive game called FRUIT BASKET where they all worked together to strengthen the students‘ understanding of what each represented vocational education group does. As students‘ understanding of the group increased, so did the amount of ‗fruit‘ they collected. To encourage the students to answer and ask questions, the student who gathered the most ‗pieces‘ of fruit won a prize.

On 28th May Natasha Djuric Year 10, Tahla Khan Year 11 and Mrs Dunn attended the Cabramatta Rotary Club annual student dinner. Eight other local high schools attended the dinner. After our meal the guest speaker entertained us Our speaker was Lisa Straleka, a member of the Australian women‘s Cricket team. Lisa told

us of her persistence and dogged determination to initially make the team selection, and then keep her position over years. She ―lives‖ for cricket. She was a member of the team when they won the world cup - a fantastic experience!

As Year 11 students this year, we went to the Olympic park. This excursion was organized by Ms. Amaratunga and Ms Aruna .The purpose of the trip was to study the mangrove, the salt marsh and their environments. In relation to that we had to do a few experiments which included getting our hands dirty doing practical experiments. For example we used quadrates to estimate the population of mangrove seedlings. We also conducted a transect to study the relationship between the environment and abundance of the species. Factors included the salinity level in the water and many others.

Furthermore we got to know some of the animals that lived with those plants. We learnt how important it is for us to protect the environment and species especially the endangered ones. We also learnt some simple tips that anyone could do to contribute to an environments protection like recycling. At the end of the day we wrapped up with the final test for the physical factors that surrounded the mangrove trees. We all had a fun and safe trip that was full of information and we gained new experiences. Safa Mohammad

Winter‘s chill has arrived and with it our scramble for heaters, electric blankets and open fires. Entertaining is now year round thanks to portable outdoor gas heaters. But with all these conveniences come fire dangers. Statistics reveal that almost half of all home fires are started in the kitchen and 43 per cent of all fire fatalities occur in winter. NSW Fire and Rescue reminds us to do a fire safety audit of our homes this winter, check smoke detectors are working and ensure appliances such as clothes dryers and dishwashers are running efficiently and safely. For more household fact sheets and useful videos on how to protect your home and family from fire go to www.fire.nsw.gov.au/
