It is an iconic event in the North East and showmen travel from all over the country to attend. 2012 marks its 130th year of

coming to the region to provide a range of entertainment, fun and laughter to

hundreds of thousands of people who travel from across the UK to visit.

Where did the name come from

There are many theories about where the name ‘The Hoppings’ came from. The

most popular relates to dancing, with the word ‘hopping’ meaning a dance in Middle English. Other interpretations of the name say it could derive from the Anglo-Saxon

word ‘hoppen’ meaning funfair.

Where does it happen

• The fair took place at Jesmond Dene from 1914–1918 and returned to the more spacious Town Moor, just north of the city centre, in 1919. There was no Festival on the Moor between 1920 and 1923, but it returned in June 1924 and it continued annually.
