The World of Rotary

Early on Sunday morning whilst many of our club members were still sleeping, a dedicated team was out and about raising valuable funds for our service projects. Around 2,000 competitors were taking part in the Gold Coast Triathlon (Luke Harrop Memorial Event) at the Broadwater Parklands in Southport Whilst most of those who helped would not have considered competing (though we do have some triathletes amongst our members) we did participate in our own multi-stage event just like the finely tuned athletes and their families and supporters we were catering to. From ordering, to set up, cooking, serving, cleaning and packup our members certainly put in a herculean effort on the day that the pictures above only do small justice to. More importantly, our takings were over $2,800 and whilst this still needs to be finalised, and expenses taken out, it is definitely a big boost to our coffers to assist in delivering our service goals !

What an end to a great week! After prepping and provisioning for the Triathlon BBQ we were up and away at 3.00am this morning (Sunday) with Tony and Donna hauling the Club Trailer and our team was punctual arriving at the Southport site at 4.00am to set up and start cooking at 5.00am The team all pulled together and did the Club proud working thru till almost midday. Sandy and I are exhausted but so delighted with today's effort from our team including Benji who watched over the proceedings. Amy and Clint just back after 24 hours of travel from South Africa were there from 4.00 am and gave us enormous support. See you on Wednesday morning Yours in Rotary Sam

BLACK TIE DINNER

At last week's meeting heard from Natalie Durkovic, a Public Relations Manager at New Land Magazine, the largest independent Chinese-English Magazine in Australia and hear her talk about the revival of Traditional Chinese Culture and Art Appreciation - Shen Yun Performing Arts. The program centers on Shen Yun Performing Arts whose mission is to revive and showcase the values that shaped Chinese culture through 5000 years of civilization - a heritage that has almost been lost in China today. This revival has global significance which Shen Yun’s world tours have shown to resonate with people throughout the world, regardless of nationality, age or social status.

Our Black Tie Dinner on the 10th of May will be a fundraiser for the Human Brain Research Programme and the work of Professor Peter Silburn in the area of Parkinsons Disease and related mental illness. There will be plenty of prizes and auction items on the night as well as entertainment provided by harpist, Mary Doumany. A flyer was sent to all members this week so please support this great cause by passing this on to family and friends and, of course, coming along yourself . Three people check into a hotel. They pay $30 ($10 each) to the manager and go to their room. The manager suddenly remembers that the room rate is $25 and gives $5 to the bellboy to return to the guests. On the way to the room the bellboy reasons that $5 would be difficult to share among three people so he pockets $2 and gives $1 to each guest.

Being Chairperson requires reading through the pre-arranged agenda and calling up speakers as necessary. The International Toast requires a quick bit of research on another Rotary Club globally and for you to speak for a minute or so at the meeting about them. The Four Way Test requires you to lead us in reciting the test at the beginning of the meeting.

Each guest who checked in paid $10 and got back $1 for a total of $27 ($9 x 3). The bellboy has $2, making a total of $29. So, where is the missing $1 ? Have your answer ready at this weeks meeting or face a fine from the sergeant !

Whilst not a member of a club in our District, Ken Hutt from the Rotary Club of Berry is undertaking a venture designed to gain worldwide publicity for the End Polio Now campaign. Ken is travelling to the Cho Oyu in Tibet, the world’s sixth highest mountain (8,201m), He is then planning to paraglide back to the base camp on the Tibetan Plateau some 3km below. The paraglider will be red and emblazoned with the Rotary wheel and the End Polio Now logo.. If successful this will be a rare feat (having only been attempted once before) and images and footage of the jump will be broadcast globally. Ken is asking every Australian Rotarian to commit $2 to this venture . Every dollar donated will go the Rotary funding efforts to end this disease forever and will be matched 2:1 by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. WRITER AND WAR WIDOW ARTIS HENDERSON FINDS PEACE THROUGH ROTARY

In the first month of my stay in Dakar, Senegal, as a Rotary Scholar, a friend gave me a piece of helpful advice. “Buy a wedding ring,” she said. I had already learned that as a young American woman in a Muslim country, I attracted a certain kind of attention. But a ring? My friend nodded. “That way everyone will leave you alone.”. With my thumb I felt for the empty space on my left

ring finger -- a place that, even now, I sometimes touch

and worry where my ring has gone. I removed my

wedding band on the one-year anniversary of my

marriage, eight months after my husband, Miles, was

killed in Iraq on 6 November 2006. I was 26 years old.

I spent the first year after Miles’ death just trying to breathe. Making it through the day felt like a challenge enough. But by the second year, I’d begun to realize that my life was continuing. For the first time since Miles died, I asked myself what I should do with this new life. The answer? Become a writer. I never imagined that Rotary would provide the key to achieving that dream. Rotary first took me from my home in southern Florida to Brittany, France, on a month-long exchange with a team of young professionals. That experience gave me the courage to make my next move -- to New York, where I earned a master’s in journalism at Columbia University. Next, the Rotarians I had met urged me to apply for a Rotary Scholarship. I wanted to travel somewhere challenging, as far away from home as possible -- away from the constant reminders of how my life had changed. In 2010, I flew to Senegal to study West African literature at the Université Cheikh Anta Diop. My time in Dakar was a gift. For the first month of my stay, I lived with a host family whose warmth helped with my transition to life in Africa. Moussa, the oldest son of the house, was my age, also a journalist. I counted him as my first real friend in Dakar. But in the second month of my stay, Moussa fell ill and died the following week. The family held a funeral, and I wept with the women of the house while the imam gave the eulogy. A month after the funeral, the family invited me to dinner. After we ate, I sat outside with Moussa’s mother, in silence, through the long, hot hours of the afternoon. At one point she reached over and held my hand. I do not know what it is like to lose a child, but I understand the depths of great loss. In that moment, I realized that this is how goodwill is built: simply and gently, a shared touch between two people.
