Corley Elementary School

Corley can see the end in sight for the 2013-2014 school year. April and May have been extremely busy for Corley students. CES third grade students have been preparing for the ACT Aspire test, while the second grade students have been traveling to the local hospital and recycling center to learn about business contributions. Corley will end the year by celebrating with the school-wide Spring Fling (May 16th—weather permitting) and two separate Awards Day programs. (3rd grade = May 20th and 2nd grade = May 21st; both programs will be held at 8:30) Mrs. Walls asked second grade teachers to nominate two students from their classrooms to serve on the first Corley Congress. The 2014-2015 Corley Congress representatives are as follows: Emileigh Bristow, Leland Adelman, Brooks Gentry, Kailey Jung, Judd Oliver, Ava Tipton, Alex Aragon, Arisvel Rojas Sandoval, Hannah McCormick, Preston Green, Alexus Ashley, Eli Golson, Sydney Noles, Isaac Butler, Fernando Vasquez, Brylee Hornbuckle, Ian Golson, Amber Johnson, Cindy Jenkins, and Benjamin Ashley. Mrs. Walls challenged these students to really brainstorm what it means to be a leader at Corley Elementary School. She also encouraged the Congress to think about how Corley students can become mission-oriented  for  the  next  school  year.    Corley  Congress  will  serve  as  the  students’  outlet  to  provide the school leaders with student feedback.

A message from the BCSS Superintendent Dear Citizens of Boaz, Alabama, As we enjoy the summer months of fun in the sun, I challenge us ALL to find a place in the City of Boaz "to serve" with no financial compensation required. In his book The Servant as a Leader, Robert Greenleaf said that "the servant-leader is servant first." By that he meant that that the desire to serve, the "servant's heart," is a fundamental characteristic of a servant-leader. It is not about being servile; it is about wanting to help others. It is about identifying and meeting the needs of students, colleagues, customers, and communities. As superintendent, I am providing ALL employees in the Boaz City School System with an opportunity to SERVEFIRST by giving back 4 hours of our summer for this very purpose......to SERVEFIRST. So, if you see us "knocking" at your door looking for ways to serve, please let us do so. Serving together, Mark Isley

Snead State Community College The Snead State Alumni Association honored its 2014 Alumnus of the Year recipient during the Alumni Homecoming event on Friday, May 2. The annual award was presented to Mr. Pat Courington Jr. of Albertville.

“Mr.  Courington  is  someone  who  supports  the  College  and  the  Alumni Association in so many ways. If he knows of a need we have, he will find a way to fill it. We can always call on him, and he never hesitates to help. He is someone who has supported me, personally, over the years, so it was my pleasure to present this honor to Mr. Courington,”  said  Snead  State  Alumni  Director Shelley Smith. After graduating from Albertville High School, Mr. Courington attended Snead Junior College in 1959 and 1960. He transferred to Birmingham Southern College where he earned a Bachelor degree in Business Administration in 1970. Mr. Courington is currently the President of Courington Real Estate and of Sand Mountain Broadcasting Services, which includes WQSB and WAVU radio stations in Albertville and WKXX in Gadsden. He

currently serves as the President of the Snead State Foundation. He has established two scholarships through the College in honor of his parents, Dorris Williams Courington and Pat M. Courington Sr. The Alumni Homecoming event is open to anyone who attended or graduated from Snead State Community College. Active members of the Alumni Association receive special invitations to the annual event in addition to other incentives available to active members. “This  summer,  the  Alumni  Association  will  host  a  second  membership  drive  this  year.  The  first  was  in  February, but we want to do a second one prior to the expiration of the current membership  card,”  said  Mrs. Smith. The membership card is given to active members and includes discounts on products and services from participating businesses. The incentive card – referred to as the  “card  that  pays  you  back”  – will be renewed Oct. 1, 2014, so anyone joining between now and Sept. 30 will receive a new card that may be used for one year. Membership to the Snead State Alumni Association is $10 for one year or a one-time cost of $100 for a lifetime membership. In addition to the membership incentive card, the Alumni Association also hosts events for alumni throughout the year including mixers, the Chili Supper and Alumni Homecoming. The Alumni Association also funds a scholarship for a Snead State student. Membership is open to anyone who attended or graduated from Snead and to anyone who is a friend of the college who would like to become an alumnus by choice. To join, contact the Alumni Office at (256) 840-4128 or [email protected]. You can also visit www.snead.edu for more information.
