Thrilling Conclusion To The 2014 BBC Regular Season;

North Central, Stryker Split CrownMAY 8, 2014– Enter-

ing the day on May 8, the North Central Eagles held a slim 1 game margin over the Stryker Panthers in the BBC. With the Eagles hit-ting the road to take on a tough Edon Bomber squad and the Panthers at home hosting the Hilltop Cadets, a win for the Eagles would lock down a conference ti-tle. With a Eagle loss and the Panthers taking care of visiting Hilltop, it would be a 8-2/8-2 finish and a split title.

For the North Central Eagles, it was a frustrat-ing afternoon, as the host Bombers behind the bril-liant pitching of River Wicker shut down the Ea-gles offence and recorded a 11-1 defeat over North Central. Across the coun-ty in Stryker, the Panthers did what they needed to do; focus and play winning ball against the visiting Ca-dets. Pitcher, Brody Shock delivered with a dominant performance, tossing a 5 hit shutout and moving the Panthers into a 1st place tie with a 5-0 victory.

On the day against the confer-ence leading North Central Eagles, River Wicker took the mound and simply dominated the Eagles line-up, going 7 innings and al-lowing just 2 hits. Wicker also struck out 5 while al-lowing only 4 walks on the game.

Offensively for the Edon Bombers, Wyatt Zulch set the tone in game early from the plate, accounting for a double and a single, driving in a game high 4 RBIs to lead the way. Kaden Sapp also had a big day at the plate, hitting for 3 singles in the game with an RBI; Landon Bloir and Conner Hug each connected for a double driving in a run while Brock Thiel Trevor Green and Wicker each had singles, with Wicker and Thiel credited with an RBI.

In the loss for North Central, Dylan Hutchison opened up the game on the mound, going 3 innings, allowing 3 earned runs off of 8 hits and 8 runs in the outing. Clayton Ferguson also saw action, going an inning, allowing 3 runs off of 2 hits.

At the plate for North Central, Branden Turner and Colton Pilmore mus-tered the only hits for the Eagles in the loss.

Indians Win SecondStraight NWOAL TitleThe Wauseon Indians and Bryan Gold-

en Bears have had quite a year to remem-ber. The Bears topped Wauseon in football and basketball and Monday they went for a trifecta with a chance at knocking off the Indians in baseball action.

In an exciting hard fought pitcher’s dual, Ty Suntken and Wauseon claimed their second straight NWOAL title with a 2-0 win over the Golden Bears. Suntken took on Bailey Martin and Wauseon’s ace was just a touch better over the seven in-ning contest.

Suntken, scattered just two hits and struck out nine in the win. Martin, equally as impressive, also allowed Indians bat-ters just two hits, but had some control is-sues as he gave up three walks during the contest. Two in the bottom of the first that led to the Indians two runs.

Ty Suntken reached base after Deylen Miley fumbled the ball. A Martin passed ball moved Suntken to second. A sec-

ond bad pitch gave Suntken a green light to third. The batter, Jacob Newlove was walked, but as though the Bryan battery was fast asleep, Suntken sneaked home and the Indians had the only run they would need just a few minutes into the game.

After a base hit by Axel Bueter, Clay Tefft walked, as Martin was still off to his shakey start. With the bases loaded, Jer-emiah Kauffman joined the walking club scoring Newlove and all the scoring was ended for the game in the first inning of play.

“Ty had another great performance for us tonight,” Trent Thomas said. “He pitched backwards tonight. He started with his splitter to get ahead then went to the fast ball to put them away. He’s given up two unearned runs all season, and he didn’t give up many tonight. They had some chances and I just could not be prouder of him. He’s our ace.”

Indians Teach A Master Class In Domination At The John Ramsey Royal Invitational

ELMWOOD: May 9 – “Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all your might…” ~ Ecclesiastes 9:10

If there is one thing to be said about the John Ramsey Royal Invitational in Elmwood, it is not for the effete poseur. This event is a great barometer to test your postseason readiness, and will only serve to humiliate those who are not prepared to go big. For example, this event has the standard allot-ment of relay races, but forgoes the 4×400 in favor of the 6400…a 4×1600 meter relay. This is truly a go big or go home invitational, and at the 2014 running of the event, the Wauseon Indians set the bar high for ‘go big’, easily dominating the field on both sides of the ledger to take the boys’ and girls’ cham-pionships.

The boys’ squad took first place with a score of 227 points, more points than the combined output of second place Elmwood and third place Van Buren. Of the seventeen events, the Tribe had a first or second place finisher in fourteen. Wauseon had 1-2 fin-ishes in four of the aforementioned events, and ten first place finishes overall. Double winners included Quintin Reiser (800 and 1600), Kris Boysel (long jump and pole vault), and Noah Castle (shot and disc). In the discus, Castle fired a round of 189′ 1″, breaking the Wauseon record of 177′ 1″ set by Todd Christy back in 2011.

By: Bill Bray THE VILLAGE REPORTER

A high school career goes by very quickly. With the passage of the four years a student athlete has expecta-tions of making a difference to his or her school, team mates and family. For Ty Suntken those expectations have far exceeded what he even envisioned.

Suntken’s memorable but challenging senior year started even before the first school bell rang. During a summer baseball game, while stretching out as he was sliding past second base, destiny reared its ugly head as the senior-to-be badly injured his shoulder. Suddenly his goals and aspirations went from playing summer ball and preparing for the upcoming football season to wondering if he would even take the field.

“I was playing in a tournament in Cincinnati with my club team,” Suntken began. “I slid into second base feet first and was reaching back for the bag. As I grabbed the bag stretching, I ripped my left shoulder out of its socket. Of all the possible injuries, never in a million years did I expect this. That was a rough time, obviously, I did not want to have surgery at that point, because that would have meant missing football. I returned in a few weeks after the injury, and to this day I still haven’t recovered my full strength from it. I look forward on really working the shoulder out when baseball is done. I had very little time to devote to strength training after the surgery this fall, because it was time to start winter baseball and to prepare for this season. I am just lucky that I have the range of motion that I have, and can play at the level I do.”

The injury, resulting in a torn labrum in his non-throwing shoulder, had to be surgically repaired at the conclusion of the football season. It was an extensive surgery, and many times complete re-mobilization of the shoulder is not accomplished. “With the surgery, it tight-ens up the shoulder once repaired,” Suntken said. “I am just fortunate that I am young and can bounce back from this.”

The pain was with Suntken through the entire football season. Harnessed up for action each Friday night, the senior signal caller fought through the pain to help lead the Indians to a 9-2 season while throwing and running for almost 2,300 yards.

For most in his situation, the season would have been a lost. The pain, excruciating, never kept him from lead-ing the team. “There was a lot that went into the thought process about playing,” Suntken said. “The love I have for my teammates, the love I have for the game and it being my final year, all went into my decision to fight through the injury. Once we began having some early success, the pain in the shoulder was overshadowed by the exhilara-tion of winning and being successful. I just had to push through it. We all worked so hard through the summer and into the fall and I just couldn’t imagine not playing for them.”

The shoulder stood pat until week 8 when the Indians travelled to Evergreen. With the game out of reach with a comfortable lead, a meaningless carry by Suntken saw the senior’s luck appear to run out. As he was tackled the shoulder was yanked again and dislocated. It was feared by Suntken and all in attendance that the remainder of the season would have to be played without the services of the field general. “I thought it was all over for a few days,” Suntken said. “Dr. Spieles took special time with me that weekend and ended up telling me that I would be able to play if I wanted to. He then laid down the op-tions of what would happen if it happened again and also

to discuss the inevitable surgery that was ahead for me either way. It was a no-brainer to make the decision to play out the season. I knew what was on the line, but I also knew the time frame would work to have the surgery and still be ready for baseball. Everything the other guys and I had been through together, I couldn’t imagine just walking away from them all at that point. “

But it was more than this, the inward perseverance and determination possessed by this young man carried him through, not only the football season, but through the entire school year. It was a characteristic that he learned as he grew in his home. “”I have to give all that up to my dad,” Suntken said. “He has been pushing me since a young age for excellence. He was on me all the time when I was little. He has been the force behind me since I can remember. It’s because of him that I have be-

come inwardly driven. He instilled the work ethic and my values and without him I would not be having the success I am having. I am a very lucky kid to have the parents that I have.”

The all-around talented athlete had his pick in sports growing up. But at a very early age he gravitated toward football. “”Football was always my first love as a little kid. My dad and I would love to go out play it in the yard. It remained my favorite sport through middle school. From that point I really found a love for baseball and loved the game. I started watching major league baseball and the sport just continued to grow on me. I know with baseball, I definitely would have a shot to play at the next level. So that motivated me to love the sport even more.”

Suntken has been named All-Ohio the last two sea-sons in baseball. Mostly because of his play at short-stop for the Indians. Over the last few years however, the multi talented senior has found his niche on the mound as a pitcher. This season Suntken reached a record of 6-0

with a ERA of zero. “I was more a thrower than pitcher,” Suntken began. “Coach Thomas gave me a chance my sophomore year and he pulled me off to the side and said he thought I could be pretty good at it. He has been a true mentor to me and his guidance has been an invalu-able part of my whole high school baseball experience. Also I have to give a lot of credit to Axel (Bueter), Austin (Bueter), my dad, and my brothers helping me out with the mechanics of pitching. Ever since my sophomore year I have been working at it and it started to click. I have since put even more work into it, and have been very lucky that I have a team behind me that plays outstand-ing defense. I used to be a pretty wild kid on the mound,” Suntken said with a laugh. “The guys have been giving me run support that a pitcher needs. He can not be success-ful without his mates supplying fire power offensively. I have been lucky to retain my velocity and strength that I had last year with pitching through the injury. But I can not say enough about the defense behind me. They have made some tremendous plays and it has been more about their play than my pitching.”

With WHS records established in hits and stolen bas-es, Suntken will continue on his baseball journey at Divi-sion I Ohio University in the fall.

He has earned some scholarship money to continue to play baseball for the Bobcats of the Mid American Confer-ence. “Coach Smith (OU baseball coach) sold me with what he is trying to accomplish down there,” Suntken said. “His intensity and will to win matches mine. They really showed a lot of interest in me last season and made several trips to watch me play. That was a huge factor to me, for them to show that much interest is huge in the whole recruiting process. I love the campus down there and could not be happier to be headed there in the fall.”

Probably his greatest accomplishment will take place on graduation day when he will join a few of his fellow classmates as a valedictorian of the class of 2014. His work ethic has spilled over into his classroom and it is also reaping dividends. “You have to give up some things that people take for granted,” Suntken said. “You have to work a little harder, but if you are diligent and work in high school you can do a lot with your life. I have been blessed with great parents that have pushed me. It is ob-viously tough to maintain that high standard as there are not many people in the class that have a 4.0. It has been four years of hard work. Plus in middle school you lay the groundwork to be able to accomplish it. At first the grades were pushed on me by my parents. Grades were not that important to me, but as I grew older I could see what an impact good grades would have on me and my future. I did not want to see all these years go to waste. So to finish out as one of the valedictorians and leave the school with pride and an appreciation is definitely a goal that I have attained.”

The legacy has been left and the bar has been raised to a high mark by Ty Suntken. As he departs for his future he leaves these words of wisdom for the next Ty Suntkens that will enter the hallowed halls of WHS. “ Enjoy your high school years while you have them,” Suntken advises. “Enjoy your team mates, time with your parents and your friends. If you find your passion, work hard to be the very best you can be. There is nothing better than football Fri-days or a nice baseball game on a Thursday night. A per-son needs to reach for their dreams. That is what life is all about after all. Going for your dreams and being happy.”

Pettisville Girls Take SixthStraight BBC Crown

PETTISVILLE: May 8 – The Ladybird Dynasty lives on…with a flourish.

The 2014 BBC Junior High Championship meet brought all six schools to-gether to the track in Pet-tisville, but only one of those teams came into the event with significant team strength and a desire to maintain the status quo…and they didn’t have to travel very far to get there. That team was the home-town Lady Blackbirds, who arrived at the event as the defending champions, five times over.

With the aforementioned pedigree, it would be tough to unseat the Ladybirds. The five other teams of the BBC gave it a great shot, but there was just too much Pettisville. For the sixth time in as many years, the Ladybirds carried home the BBC crown in a dominating performance, with a busted record added for good mea-sure.

Pettisville outgunned second place Edon by a century mark, 170-70, with North Central in third with 60 points. Stryker finished with 55 points, Hilltop had 43, and Fayette finished sixth with 32 points.

The exclamation point came in the 4×100 relay where the Ladybirds sent Kendi Nofziger, Kendall Pur-sel, Sarah Herring and Kyra Behnfeldt into the fray. The Pettisville relayers posted a time of 55.8 seconds, not just good for the win, but also good for the BBC girls’ record.
