Christmas SeasonChristmas is also a liturgical season that extends beyond the Octave. Christmas Time, as this period is known, includes the Solemnity of the Epiphany of the Lord (January 5–6), and ends with the Feast of the Bap-tism of the Lord (January 12–13). Epiphany, which is also known as Three Kings Day, commemorates the visit of the Magi, when Christ was revealed as the Savior of all peoples. The Baptism of the Lord recalls another epiph-any, when Jesus was manifested as the Son of God after being baptized in

    the Jordan River.

How might we, as parents, help our children enter into prayer?

When we think of family prayer, what comes to mind are the common places of prayer in the home: table and bed. The times when we share a meal or prepare for sleep are moments of relaxation and recollection. How natural it can become to express our thanks to God for food prepared and offered and for the completion of another day! The ritual of prayer at these moments is welcomed by even the smallest children and ensures that God’s presence is not forgotten. Simply lighting a candle at mealtime and singing or saying our thanks to God attracts and delights even the youngest child. The baptismal sign of belonging to Christ — a small cross traced with your thumb on the child’s forehead — can become a nightly blessing. This Advent, look for more ways to

invite your children to pray. (from cgsusa.org)

Sacramental PreparationPreparation for First Penance and First Holy Communion usually takes place during second grade (around age seven) and includes classes for children and parents. Children who are beyond second grade who have not received their First Holy Communion are wel-come and encouraged to attend these classes. Please register your child and we will share the 2020-2021 schedule. Questions? Contact Joy Weir at [email protected]

Loving Mother of the RedeemerThere are five antiphons sung in honor of the Blessed Virgin Mary that correspond to the various liturgical seasons. The antiphon sung during Advent and Christmas, until the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord (February 2), is the Alma Redemptoris Mater (“Loving Mother of the Redeemer”). Parishioners may wish to use this antiphon as devotional prayer during the Christmas season:

Loving Mother of the Redeemer, gate of heaven, star of the sea, assist your people who have fallen yet strive to rise again. To the wonderment of nature you bore your Creator, yet remained a virgin after as before. You who received Gabriel’s joyful greeting, have pity on us poor sinners.
