ter, but He will baptize you bwith theHoly Spirit.”

John Baptizes Jesus

9 aIt came to pass in those daysthat Jesus came from Nazareth ofGalilee, and was baptized by Johnin the Jordan.10 aAnd immediately, coming up1from the water, He saw the heavens2parting and the Spirit bdescendingupon Him like a dove.11 Then a voice came from heaven,a“You are My beloved Son, in whomI am well pleased.”

Satan Tempts Jesus

12 aImmediately the Spirit 1droveHim into the wilderness.13 And He was there in the wilder-ness forty days, tempted by Satan, and was with the wild beasts; aandthe angels ministered to Him.

Jesus Begins His Galilean Ministry

14 aNow after John was put inprison, Jesus came to Galilee, bpreaching the gospel 1of the king-dom of God,15 and saying, a“The time is fulfilled, and bthe kingdom of God 1is at hand.Repent, and believe in the gospel.”

Four Fishermen Called as Disciples

16 aAnd as He walked by the Sea ofGalilee, He saw Simon and Andrewhis brother casting a net into thesea; for they were fishermen.17 Then Jesus said to them, “Fol-low Me, and I will make you becomeafishers of men.”18 aThey immediately left theirnets and followed Him.19 When He had gone a little far-ther from there, He saw James theson of Zebedee, and John hisbrother, who also were in the boatmending their nets.20 And immediately He calledthem, and they left their fatherZebedee in the boat with the hiredservants, and went after Him.

Jesus Casts Out an Unclean Spirit

21 aThen they went into Caper-naum, and immediately on the Sab-bath He entered the bsynagogue andtaught.22 aAnd they were astonished atHis teaching, for He taught them asone having authority, and not as thescribes.23 Now there was a man in theirsynagogue with an aunclean spirit. And he cried out,24 saying, “Let us alone! aWhathave we to do with You, Jesus ofNazareth? Did You come to destroyus? I bknow who You are—the cHolyOne of God!”25 But Jesus arebuked him, saying,1“Be quiet, and come out of him!”

26 And when the unclean spirit ahadconvulsed him and cried out with aloud voice, he came out of him.27 Then they were all amazed, sothat they questioned among them-selves, saying, 1“What is this? Whatnew 2doctrine is this? For withauthority He commands even theunclean spirits, and they obey Him.”28 And immediately His afamespread throughout all the regionaround Galilee.

Peter’s Mother-in-Law Healed

29 aNow as soon as they had comeout of the synagogue, they enteredthe house of Simon and Andrew, with James and John.30 But Simon’s wife’s mother laysick with a fever, and they told Himabout her at once.31 So He came and took her by thehand and lifted her up, and immedi-ately the fever left her. And sheserved them.

Many Healed After Sabbath Sunset

32 aAt evening, when the sun hadset, they brought to Him all whowere sick and those who weredemon-possessed.33 And the whole city was gath-ered together at the door.34 Then He healed many who weresick with various diseases, and acastout many demons; and He bdid notallow the demons to speak, becausethey knew Him.

Preaching in Galilee

35 Now ain the morning, havingrisen a long while before daylight,He went out and departed to a 1soli-tary place; and there He bprayed.36 And Simon and those who werewith Him searched for Him.37 When they found Him, they saidto Him, a“Everyone bis looking forYou.”38 But He said to them, a“Let us gointo the next towns, that I maypreach there also, because bfor thispurpose I have come forth.”39 aAnd He was preaching in theirsynagogues throughout all Galilee, and bcasting out demons.

Jesus Cleanses a Leper

40 aNow a leper came to Him,imploring Him, kneeling down toHim and saying to Him, “If You arewilling,You can make me clean.”41 Then Jesus, moved with acom-passion, stretched out His hand andtouched him, and said to him, “I amwilling; be cleansed.”42 As soon as He had spoken, aim-mediately the leprosy left him, andhe was cleansed.43 And He strictly warned him andsent him away at once,44 and said to him, “See that you

say nothing to anyone; but go yourway, show yourself to the priest, andoffer for your cleansing those thingsawhich Moses commanded, as a tes-timony to them.”45 aHowever, he went out andbegan to proclaim it freely, and tospread the matter, so that Jesuscould no longer openly enter thecity, but was outside in desertedplaces; band they came to Him fromevery direction.

Jesus Forgives and Heals aParalytic

2 And again aHe entered Caper-naum after some days, and it

was heard that He was in the house.2 1Immediately many gatheredtogether, so that there was no longerroom to receive them, not even nearthe door. And He preached the wordto them.3 Then they came to Him, bring-ing a aparalytic who was carried byfour men.4 And when they could not comenear Him because of the crowd, they uncovered the roof where Hewas. So when they had brokenthrough, they let down the bed onwhich the paralytic was lying.5 When Jesus saw their faith, Hesaid to the paralytic, “Son, your sinsare forgiven you.”6 And some of the scribes weresitting there and reasoning in theirhearts,7 “Why does this Man speak blas-phemies like this? aWho can forgivesins but God alone?”8 But immediately, when Jesusperceived in His spirit that they rea-soned thus within themselves, Hesaid to them, “Why do you reasonabout these things in your hearts?9 a“Which is easier, to say to theparalytic, ‘Your sins are forgivenyou,’ or to say, ‘Arise, take up yourbed and walk’?10 “But that you may know that theSon of Man has 1power on earth toforgive sins”—He said to the para-lytic,11 “I say to you, arise, take up yourbed, and go to your house.”12 Immediately he arose, took upthe bed, and went out in the pres-ence of them all, so that all wereamazed and aglorified God, saying,“We never saw anything like this!”

Matthew the Tax Collector

13 aThen He went out again by thesea; and all the multitude came toHim, and He taught them.14 aAs He passed by, He saw Levithe son of Alphaeus sitting at the taxoffice. And He said to him, b“FollowMe.” So he arose and cfollowed Him.15 aNow it happened, as He wasdining in Levi’s house, that many taxcollectors and sinners also sat to-

gether with Jesus and His disciples;for there were many, and they fol-lowed Him.16 And when the scribes 1andPharisees saw Him eating with thetax collectors and sinners, they saidto His disciples, “How is it that Heeats and drinks with tax collectorsand sinners?”17 When Jesus heard it, He said tothem, a“Those who are well have noneed of a physician, but those whoare sick. I did not come to call therighteous, but sinners, 1to repen-tance.”

Jesus Is Questioned About Fasting

18 aThe disciples of John and of thePharisees were fasting. Then theycame and said to Him, “Why do thedisciples of John and of the Phariseesfast, but Your disciples do not fast?”19 And Jesus said to them, “Canthe 1friends of the bridegroom fastwhile the bridegroom is with them?As long as they have the bride-groom with them they cannot fast.20 “But the days will come whenthe bridegroom will be ataken awayfrom them, and then they will fast inthose days.21 “No one sews a piece of un-shrunk cloth on an old garment; orelse the new piece pulls away fromthe old, and the tear is made worse.22 “And no one puts new wine intoold wineskins; or else the new winebursts the wineskins, the wine isspilled, and the wineskins areruined. But new wine must be putinto new wineskins.”

Jesus Is Lord of the Sabbath

23 aNow it happened that He wentthrough the grainfields on the Sab-bath; and as they went His disciplesbegan bto pluck the heads of grain.24 And the Pharisees said to Him,“Look, why do they do what is anotlawful on the Sabbath?”25 But He said to them, “Have younever read awhat David did when hewas in need and hungry, he andthose with him:26 “how he went into the house ofGod in the days of Abiathar the highpriest, and ate the showbread, awhich is not lawful to eat except forthe priests, and also gave some tothose who were with him?”27 And He said to them, “The Sab-bath was made for man, and notman for the aSabbath.28 “Therefore athe Son of Man isalso Lord of the Sabbath.”

Healing on the Sabbath

Sabbath, so that they might 1accuseHim.3 And He said to the man who hadthe withered hand, 1“Step forward.”4 Then He said to them, “Is it law-ful on the Sabbath to do good or todo evil, to save life or to kill?” Butthey kept silent.5 And when He had lookedaround at them with anger, beinggrieved by the ahardness of theirhearts, He said to the man, “Stretchout your hand.” And he stretched itout, and his hand was restored 1aswhole as the other.6 aThen the Pharisees went outand immediately plotted with btheHerodians against Him, how theymight destroy Him.

A Great Multitude Follows Jesus

7 But Jesus withdrew with Hisdisciples to the sea. And a greatmultitude from Galilee followedHim, aand from Judea8 and Jerusalem and Idumea andbeyond the Jordan; and those fromTyre and Sidon, a great multitude, when they heard how amany thingsHe was doing, came to Him.9 So He told His disciples that asmall boat should be kept ready forHim because of the multitude, lestthey should crush Him.10 For He healed amany, so that asmany as had afflictions pressedabout Him to btouch Him.11 aAnd the unclean spirits, when-ever they saw Him, fell down beforeHim and cried out, saying, b“You arethe Son of God.”12 But aHe sternly warned them thatthey should not make Him known.

The Twelve Apostles

13 aAnd He went up on the moun-tain and called to Him those He Him-self wanted. And they came to Him.14 Then He appointed twelve, 1thatthey might be with Him and that Hemight send them out to preach,15 and to have 1power 2to heal sick-nesses and to cast out demons:16 1Simon, ato whom He gave thename Peter;17 James the son of Zebedee andJohn the brother of James, to whomHe gave the name Boanerges, thatis, “Sons of Thunder”;18 Andrew, Philip, Bartholomew,Matthew, Thomas, James the son ofAlphaeus, Thaddaeus, Simon theCananite;19 and Judas Iscariot, who alsobetrayed Him. And they went into ahouse.

A House Divided Cannot Stand

20 Then the multitude came to-gether again, aso that they could notso much as eat bread.21 But when His aown people heardabout this, they went out to lay hold

of Him, bfor they said, “He is out ofHis mind.”22 And the scribes who came downfrom Jerusalem said, a“He hasBeelzebub,” and, “By the bruler ofthe demons He casts out demons.”23 aSo He called them to Himselfand said to them in parables: “Howcan Satan cast out Satan?24 “If a kingdom is divided againstitself, that kingdom cannot stand.25 “And if a house is dividedagainst itself, that house cannotstand.26 “And if Satan has risen upagainst himself, and is divided, hecannot stand, but has an end.27 a“No one can enter a strongman’s house and plunder his goods, unless he first binds the strong man.And then he will plunder his house.

The Unpardonable Sin

28 a“Assuredly, I say to you, all sinswill be forgiven the sons of men,and whatever blasphemies theymay utter;29 “but he who blasphemes againstthe Holy Spirit never has forgive-ness, but is subject to eternal con-demnation”—30 because they asaid, “He has anunclean spirit.”

Jesus’Mother and Brothers Send for Him

31 aThen His brothers and Hismother came, and standing outsidethey sent to Him, calling Him.32 And a multitude was sittingaround Him; and they said to Him,“Look,Your mother and Your broth-ers 1are outside seeking You.”33 But He answered them, saying,“Who is My mother, or My broth-ers?”34 And He looked around in a cir-cle at those who sat about Him, andsaid, “Here are My mother and Mybrothers!35 “For whoever does the awill ofGod is My brother and My sisterand mother.”

The Parable of the Sower

4 And aagain He began to teach by the sea. And a great multi-

tude was gathered to Him, so thatHe got into a boat and sat in it onthe sea; and the whole multitudewas on the land facing the sea.2 Then He taught them manythings by parables, aand said tothem in His teaching:3 “Listen! Behold, a sower wentout to sow.4 “And it happened, as he sowed,that some seed fell by the wayside;and the birds 1of the air came anddevoured it.5 “Some fell on stony ground,where it did not have much earth;

and immediately it sprang up be-cause it had no depth of earth.6 “But when the sun was up it wasscorched, and because it had no rootit withered away.7 “And some seed fell amongthorns; and the thorns grew up andchoked it, and it yielded no 1crop.8 “But other seed fell on goodground and yielded a crop thatsprang up, increased and produced:some thirtyfold, some sixty, andsome a hundred.”9 And He said 1to them, “He whohas ears to hear, let him hear!”

The Purpose of Parables

10 aBut when He was alone, thosearound Him with the twelve askedHim about the parable.11 And He said to them, “To you ithas been given to aknow the 1mys-tery of the kingdom of God; but tobthose who are outside, all thingscome in parables,12 “so that

a‘Seeing they may see and notperceive,

And hearing they may hear andnot understand;

Lest they should turn,And their sins be forgiven

them.’ ”

The Parable of the SowerExplained

13 And He said to them, “Do you notunderstand this parable? How thenwill you understand all the parables?14 a“The sower sows the word.15 “And these are the ones by thewayside where the word is sown. When they hear, Satan comesimmediately and takes away theword that was sown in their hearts.16 “These likewise are the onessown on stony ground who, whenthey hear the word, immediatelyreceive it with gladness;17 “and they have no root in them-selves, and so endure only for atime. Afterward, when tribulation orpersecution arises for the word’ssake, immediately they stumble.18 “Now these are the ones sownamong thorns; they are the oneswho hear the word,19 “and the acares of this world, bthe deceitfulness of riches, and thedesires for other things entering inchoke the word, and it becomesunfruitful.20 “But these are the ones sown ongood ground, those who hear theword, 1accept it, and bear afruit:some thirtyfold, some sixty, andsome a hundred.”

Light Under a Basket

21 aAlso He said to them, “Is a lampbrought to be put under a basket or

under a bed? Is it not to be set on alampstand?22 a“For there is nothing hiddenwhich will not be revealed, nor hasanything been kept secret but that itshould come to light.23 a“If anyone has ears to hear, lethim hear.”24 Then He said to them, “Takeheed what you hear. aWith the samemeasure you use, it will be mea-sured to you; and to you who hear, more will be given.25 a“For whoever has, to him morewill be given; but whoever does nothave, even what he has will be takenaway from him.”

The Parable of the Growing Seed

26 And He said, a“The kingdom ofGod is as if a man should 1scatterseed on the ground,27 “and should sleep by night andrise by day, and the seed shouldsprout and agrow, he himself doesnot know how.28 “For the earth ayields crops byitself: first the blade, then the head, after that the full grain in the head.29 “But when the grain ripens, immediately ahe puts in the sickle, because the harvest has come.”

The Parable of the Mustard Seed

30 Then He said, a“To what shall weliken the kingdom of God? Or withwhat parable shall we picture it?31 “It is like a mustard seed which, when it is sown on the ground, issmaller than all the seeds on earth;32 “but when it is sown, it grows upand becomes greater than all herbs, and shoots out large branches, sothat the birds of the air may nestunder its shade.”

Jesus’ Use of Parables

33 aAnd with many such parablesHe spoke the word to them as theywere able to hear it.34 But without a parable He didnot speak to them. And when theywere alone, aHe explained all thingsto His disciples.

Wind and Wave Obey Jesus

35 aOn the same day, when eveninghad come, He said to them, “Let uscross over to the other side.”36 Now when they had left themultitude, they took Him along inthe boat as He was. And other littleboats were also with Him.37 And a great windstorm arose, and the waves beat into the boat, sothat it was already filling.38 But He was in the stern, asleepon a pillow. And they awoke Himand said to Him, a“Teacher, bdo Younot care that we are perishing?”39 Then He arose and arebuked thewind, and said to the sea, b“Peace,1

be still!” And the wind ceased andthere was a great calm.40 But He said to them, “Why areyou so fearful? aHow1 is it that youhave no faith?”41 And they feared exceedingly, andsaid to one another, “Who can this be,that even the wind and the sea obeyHim!”

A Demon-Possessed Man Healed

5 Then athey came to the other side of the sea, to the country of

the 1Gadarenes.2 And when He had come out ofthe boat, immediately there metHim out of the tombs a man with anaunclean spirit,3 who had his dwelling among thetombs; and no one could bind 1him,not even with chains,4 because he had often been boundwith shackles and chains. And thechains had been pulled apart by him,and the shackles broken in pieces;neither could anyone tame him.5 And always, night and day, hewas in the mountains and in thetombs, crying out and cutting him-self with stones.6 When he saw Jesus from afar,he ran and worshiped Him.7 And he cried out with a loudvoice and said, “What have I to dowith You, Jesus, Son of the MostHigh God? I aimplore1 You by Godthat You do not torment me.”8 For He said to him, a“Come outof the man, unclean spirit!”9 Then He asked him, “What isyour name?” And he answered, say-ing, “My name is Legion; for we aremany.”10 Also he begged Him earnestlythat He would not send them out ofthe country.11 Now a large herd of aswine wasfeeding there near the mountains.12 So all the demons begged Him,saying, “Send us to the swine, thatwe may enter them.”13 And 1at once Jesus gave thempermission. Then the unclean spiritswent out and entered the swine(there were about two thousand);and the herd ran violently down thesteep place into the sea, anddrowned in the sea.14 So those who fed the swine fled, and they told it in the city and in thecountry. And they went out to seewhat it was that had happened.15 Then they came to Jesus, andsaw the one who had been ademon-possessed and had the legion, bsit-ting and cclothed and in his rightmind. And they were afraid.16 And those who saw it told themhow it happened to him who hadbeen demon-possessed, and aboutthe swine.17 Then athey began to plead withHim to depart from their region.

18 And when He got into the boat, ahe who had been demon-possessedbegged Him that he might be withHim.19 However, Jesus did not permithim, but said to him, “Go home toyour friends, and tell them whatgreat things the Lord has done foryou, and how He has had compas-sion on you.”20 And he departed and began toaproclaim in 1Decapolis all thatJesus had done for him; and allbmarveled.

A Girl Restored to Life and aWoman Healed

21 aNow when Jesus had crossedover again by boat to the other side,a great multitude gathered to Him;and He was by the sea.22 aAnd behold, one of the rulers ofthe synagogue came, Jairus byname. And when he saw Him, he fellat His feet23 and begged Him earnestly, say-ing, “My little daughter lies at thepoint of death. Come and alay Yourhands on her, that she may behealed, and she will live.”24 So Jesus went with him, and agreat multitude followed Him andthronged Him.25 Now a certain woman ahad aflow of blood for twelve years,26 and had suffered many thingsfrom many physicians. She hadspent all that she had and was nobetter, but rather grew worse.27 When she heard about Jesus, she came behind Him in the crowdand atouched His garment.28 For she said, “If only I may touchHis clothes, I shall be made well.”29 Immediately the fountain of herblood was dried up, and she felt inher body that she was healed of the1affliction.30 And Jesus, immediately know-ing in Himself that apower had goneout of Him, turned around in thecrowd and said, “Who touched Myclothes?”31 But His disciples said to Him,“You see the multitude thronging You,and You say, ‘Who touched Me?’ ”32 And He looked around to seeher who had done this thing.33 But the woman, afearing andtrembling, knowing what had hap-pened to her, came and fell downbefore Him and told Him the wholetruth.34 And He said to her, “Daughter, ayour faith has made you well. bGoin peace, and be healed of youraffliction.”35 aWhile He was still speaking, some came from the ruler of thesynagogue’s house who said, “Yourdaughter is dead. that was spoken, He said to the rulerof the synagogue, “Do not be afraid;only abelieve.”37 And He permitted no one to fol-low Him except Peter, James, andJohn the brother of James.38 Then He came to the house ofthe ruler of the synagogue, and saw1a tumult and those who awept andwailed loudly.39 When He came in, He said tothem, “Why make this commotionand weep? The child is not dead, butasleeping.”40 And they ridiculed Him. aButwhen He had put them all outside,He took the father and the motherof the child, and those who werewith Him, and entered where thechild was lying.41 Then He took the child by thehand, and said to her, “Talitha, cumi,” which is translated, “Littlegirl, I say to you, arise.”42 Immediately the girl arose andwalked, for she was twelve years ofage. And they were aovercome withgreat amazement.43 But aHe commanded themstrictly that no one should know it,and said that something should begiven her to eat.

Jesus Rejected at Nazareth

6 Then aHe went out from there and came to His own country,

and His disciples followed Him.2 And when the Sabbath hadcome, He began to teach in the syn-agogue. And many hearing Himwere aastonished, saying, b“Wheredid this Man get these things? Andwhat wisdom is this which is givento Him, that such mighty works areperformed by His hands!3 “Is this not the carpenter, theSon of Mary, and abrother of James,Joses, Judas, and Simon? And arenot His sisters here with us?” Sothey bwere offended at Him.4 But Jesus said to them, a“Aprophet is not without honor exceptin his own country, among his ownrelatives, and in his own house.”5 aNow He could do no mightywork there, except that He laid Hishands on a few sick people andhealed them.6 And aHe marveled because oftheir unbelief. bThen He went aboutthe villages in a circuit, teaching.

Sending Out the Twelve

7 aAnd He called the twelve toHimself, and began to send themout btwo by two, and gave thempower over unclean spirits.8 He commanded them to takenothing for the journey except astaff—no bag, no bread, no copperin their money belts—9 but ato wear sandals, and not toput on two tunics.

10 aAlso He said to them, “In what-ever place you enter a house, staythere till you depart from that place.11 a“And 1whoever will not receiveyou nor hear you, when you departfrom there, bshake off the dustunder your feet as a testimonyagainst them. 2Assuredly, I say toyou, it will be more tolerable forSodom and Gomorrah in the day ofjudgment than for that city!”12 So they went out and preachedthat people should repent.13 And they cast out many demons, aand anointed with oil many whowere sick, and healed them.

John the Baptist Beheaded

14 aNow King Herod heard of Him,for His name had become wellknown. And he said, “John the Bap-tist is risen from the dead, andtherefore bthese powers are at workin him.”15 aOthers said, “It is Elijah.” Andothers said, “It is 1the Prophet, borlike one of the prophets.”16 aBut when Herod heard, he said,“This is John, whom I beheaded; hehas been raised from the dead!”17 For Herod himself had sent andlaid hold of John, and bound him inprison for the sake of Herodias, hisbrother Philip’s wife; for he hadmarried her.18 Because John had said toHerod, a“It is not lawful for you tohave your brother’s wife.”19 Therefore Herodias 1held itagainst him and wanted to kill him,but she could not;20 for Herod afeared John, know-ing that he was a just and holy man,and he protected him. And when heheard him, he 1did many things, andheard him gladly.21 aThen an opportune day camewhen Herod bon his birthday gave afeast for his nobles, the high offi-cers, and the chief men of Galilee.22 And when Herodias’ daughterherself came in and danced, andpleased Herod and those who satwith him, the king said to the girl,“Ask me whatever you want, and Iwill give it to you.”23 He also swore to her, a“What-ever you ask me, I will give you, upto half my kingdom.”24 So she went out and said to hermother, “What shall I ask?” And shesaid, “The head of John the Baptist!”25 Immediately she came in withhaste to the king and asked, saying,“I want you to give me at once thehead of John the Baptist on a plat-ter.”26 aAnd the king was exceedinglysorry; yet, because of the oaths andbecause of those who sat with him,he did not want to refuse her.27 Immediately the king sent an exe-cutioner and commanded his head

Feeding the Five Thousand

30 aThen the apostles gathered toJesus and told Him all things, bothwhat they had done and what theyhad taught.31 aAnd He said to them, “Comeaside by yourselves to a desertedplace and rest a while.” For btherewere many coming and going, andthey did not even have time to eat.32 aSo they departed to a desertedplace in the boat by themselves.33 But 1the multitudes saw themdeparting, and many aknew Him andran there on foot from all the cities. They arrived before them and cametogether to Him.34 aAnd Jesus, when He came out,saw a great multitude and wasmoved with compassion for them, because they were like bsheep nothaving a shepherd. So cHe began toteach them many things.35 aWhen the day was now farspent, His disciples came to Himand said, “This is a deserted place, and already the hour is late.36 “Send them away, that they maygo into the surrounding country andvillages and buy themselves 1bread;for they have nothing to eat.”37 But He answered and said tothem, “You give them something toeat.” And they said to Him, a“Shallwe go and buy two hundred denariiworth of bread and give them some-thing to eat?”38 But He said to them, “Howmany loaves do you have? Go andsee.” And when they found out theysaid, a“Five, and two fish.”39 Then He acommanded them tomake them all sit down in groups onthe green grass.40 So they sat down in ranks, inhundreds and in fifties.41 And when He had taken the fiveloaves and the two fish, He alookedup to heaven, bblessed and broke theloaves, and gave them to His disci-ples to set before them; and the twofish He divided among them all.42 So they all ate and were filled.43 And they took up twelve basketsfull of fragments and of the fish.44 Now those who had eaten theloaves were 1about five thousandmen.

Jesus Walks on the Sea

45 aImmediately He 1made His dis-ciples get into the boat and gobefore Him to the other side, toBethsaida, while He sent the multi-tude away.

46 And when He had sent themaway, He adeparted to the mountainto pray.47 Now when evening came, theboat was in the middle of the sea;and He was alone on the land.48 Then He saw them straining atrowing, for the wind was againstthem. Now about the fourth watchof the night He came to them, walk-ing on the sea, and awould havepassed them by.49 And when they saw Him walk-ing on the sea, they supposed it wasa aghost, and cried out;50 for they all saw Him and weretroubled. But immediately He talkedwith them and said to them, a“Be1 ofgood cheer! It is I; do not be bafraid.”51 Then He went up into the boatto them, and the wind aceased. Andthey were greatly bamazed in them-selves beyond measure, and mar-veled.52 For athey had not understoodabout the loaves, because theirbheart was hardened.

Many Touch Him and Are Made Well

53 aWhen they had crossed over, they came to the land of Gennesaretand anchored there.54 And when they came out of theboat, immediately 1the people rec-ognized Him,55 ran through that whole sur-rounding region, and began to carryabout on beds those who were sickto wherever they heard He was.56 Wherever He entered, into vil-lages, cities, or the country, they laidthe sick in the marketplaces, andbegged Him that athey might justtouch the bhem of His garment. Andas many as touched Him were madewell.

Defilement Comes from Within

7 Then athe Pharisees and some of the scribes came together to

Him, having come from Jerusalem.2 Now 1when they saw some ofHis disciples eat bread with defiled, that is, with aunwashed hands, 2theyfound fault.3 For the Pharisees and all theJews do not eat unless they washtheir hands 1in a special way, hold-ing the atradition of the elders.4 When they come from the mar-ketplace, they do not eat unless theywash. And there are many otherthings which they have received andhold, like the washing of cups, pitch-ers, copper vessels, and couches.5 aThen the Pharisees and scribesasked Him, “Why do Your disciplesnot walk according to the traditionof the elders, but eat bread withunwashed hands?”6 He answered and said to them,

MARK 7:7 886

“Well did Isaiah prophesy of youahypocrites, as it is written:

b‘This people honors Me withtheir lips,

But their heart is far from Me.7 And in vain they worship Me,

Teaching as doctrines thecommandments of men.’

8 “For laying aside the command-ment of God, you hold the traditionof men—1the washing of pitchersand cups, and many other suchthings you do.”9 He said to them, “All too wellayou 1reject the commandment ofGod, that you may keep your tradi-tion.10 “For Moses said, a‘Honor yourfather and your mother’; and, b‘Hewho curses father or mother, let himbe put to death.’11 “But you say, ‘If a man says to hisfather or mother, a“Whatever profityou might have received from me isCorban”—’ (that is, a gift to God),12 “then you no longer let him doanything for his father or his mother,13 “making the word of God of noeffect through your tradition whichyou have handed down. And manysuch things you do.”14 aWhen He had called all themultitude to Himself, He said tothem, “Hear Me, everyone, and bun-derstand:15 “There is nothing that enters aman from outside which can defilehim; but the things which come outof him, those are the things that ade-file a man.16 a“If1 anyone has ears to hear, lethim hear!”17 aWhen He had entered a houseaway from the crowd, His disciplesasked Him concerning the parable.18 So He said to them, a“Are youthus without understanding also?Do you not perceive that whateverenters a man from outside cannotdefile him,19 “because it does not enter hisheart but his stomach, and is elimi-nated, 1thus purifying all foods?”20 And He said, a“What comes outof a man, that defiles a man.21 a“For from within, out of theheart of men, bproceed evil thoughts, cadulteries, dfornications, murders,22 “thefts, acovetousness, wicked-ness, bdeceit, clewdness, an evil eye, dblasphemy, epride, foolishness.23 “All these evil things come fromwithin and defile a man.”

A Gentile Shows Her Faith

24 aFrom there He arose and wentto the region of Tyre 1and Sidon. And He entered a house and wantedno one to know it, but He could notbe bhidden.25 For a woman whose young

daughter had an unclean spiritheard about Him, and she came andafell at His feet.26 The woman was a 1Greek, a2Syro-Phoenician by birth, and shekept 3asking Him to cast the demonout of her daughter.27 But Jesus said to her, “Let thechildren be filled first, for it is notgood to take the children’s breadand throw it to the little dogs.”28 And she answered and said toHim, “Yes, Lord, yet even the littledogs under the table eat from thechildren’s crumbs.”29 Then He said to her, “For thissaying go your way; the demon hasgone out of your daughter.”30 And when she had come to herhouse, she found the demon gone out,and her daughter lying on the bed.

Jesus Heals a Deaf-Mute

31 aAgain, departing from the re-gion of Tyre and Sidon, He camethrough the midst of the region ofDecapolis to the Sea of Galilee.32 Then athey brought to Him onewho was deaf and had an impedi-ment in his speech, and they beggedHim to put His hand on him.33 And He took him aside from themultitude, and put His fingers in hisears, and aHe spat and touched histongue.34 Then, alooking up to heaven,bHe sighed, and said to him, “Eph-phatha,” that is, “Be opened.”35 aImmediately his ears wereopened, and the 1impediment of histongue was loosed, and he spokeplainly.36 Then aHe commanded them thatthey should tell no one; but themore He commanded them, themore widely they proclaimed it.37 And they were aastonishedbeyond measure, saying, “He hasdone all things well. He bmakes boththe deaf to hear and the mute tospeak.”

Feeding the Four Thousand

8 In those days, athe multitude being very great and having

nothing to eat, Jesus called His dis-ciples to Him and said to them,2 “I have acompassion on the mul-titude, because they have now con-tinued with Me three days and havenothing to eat.3 “And if I send them away hungryto their own houses, they will fainton the way; for some of them havecome from afar.”4 Then His disciples answeredHim, “How can one satisfy thesepeople with bread here in thewilderness?”5 aHe asked them, “How manyloaves do you have?” And they said,“Seven.”6 So He commanded the multitude

to sit down on the ground. And Hetook the seven loaves and gavethanks, broke them and gave them toHis disciples to set before them; andthey set them before the multitude.7 They also had a few small fish;and ahaving blessed them, He saidto set them also before them.8 So they ate and were filled, andthey took up seven large baskets ofleftover fragments.9 Now those who had eaten wereabout four thousand. And He sentthem away,10 aimmediately got into the boatwith His disciples, and came to theregion of Dalmanutha.

The Pharisees Seek a Sign

11 aThen the Pharisees came outand began to dispute with Him,seeking from Him a sign fromheaven, testing Him.12 But He asighed deeply in Hisspirit, and said, “Why does this gen-eration seek a sign? Assuredly, I sayto you, bno sign shall be given to thisgeneration.”

Beware of the Leaven of thePharisees and Herod

13 And He left them, and gettinginto the boat again, departed to theother side.14 aNow 1the disciples had forgot-ten to take bread, and they did nothave more than one loaf with themin the boat.15 aThen He charged them, saying,“Take heed, beware of the 1leaven ofthe Pharisees and the leaven ofHerod.”16 And they reasoned amongthemselves, saying, “It is becausewe have no bread.”17 But Jesus, being aware of it,said to them, “Why do you reasonbecause you have no bread? aDoyou not yet perceive nor under-stand? Is your heart 1still hardened?18 “Having eyes, do you not see?And having ears, do you not hear? And do you not remember?19 a“When I broke the five loavesfor the five thousand, how many bas-kets full of fragments did you takeup?” They said to Him, “Twelve.”20 “Also, awhen I broke the sevenfor the four thousand, how manylarge baskets full of fragments didyou take up?” And they said,“Seven.”21 So He said to them, “How is itayou do not understand?”

A Blind Man Healed at Bethsaida

22 Then He came to Bethsaida; andthey brought a ablind man to Him,and begged Him to btouch him.23 So He took the blind man by thehand and led him out of the town. And when aHe had spit on his eyes

and put His hands on him, He askedhim if he saw anything.24 And he looked up and said, “Isee men like trees, walking.”25 Then He put His hands on hiseyes again and made him look up.And he was restored and saw every-one clearly.26 Then He sent him away to hishouse, saying, 1“Neither go into thetown, anor tell anyone in the town.”

Peter Confesses Jesus as the Christ

27 aNow Jesus and His discipleswent out to the towns of CaesareaPhilippi; and on the road He askedHis disciples, saying to them, “Whodo men say that I am?”28 So they answered, a“John theBaptist; but some say, bElijah; andothers, one of the prophets.”29 He said to them, “But who do yousay that I am?” Peter answered andsaid to Him, a“You are the Christ.”30 aThen He strictly warned themthat they should tell no one aboutHim.

Jesus Predicts His Death andResurrection

31 And aHe began to teach themthat the Son of Man must suffermany things, and be brejected by theelders and chief priests and scribes, and be ckilled, and after three daysrise again.32 He spoke this word openly. Then Peter took Him aside andbegan to rebuke Him.33 But when He had turned aroundand looked at His disciples, He are-buked Peter, saying, “Get behindMe, Satan! For you are not 1mindfulof the things of God, but the thingsof men.”

Take Up the Cross and Follow Him

34 When He had called the peopleto Himself, with His disciples also,He said to them, a“Whoever desiresto come after Me, let him deny him-self, and take up his cross, and fol-low Me.35 “For awhoever desires to savehis life will lose it, but whoeverloses his life for My sake and thegospel’s will save it.36 “For what will it profit a man ifhe gains the whole world, and loseshis own soul?37 “Or what will a man give inexchange for his soul?38 a“For whoever bis ashamed ofMe and My words in this adulterousand sinful generation, of him theSon of Man also will be ashamedwhen He comes in the glory of HisFather with the holy angels.”

some standing here who will nottaste death till they see bthe king-dom of God 1present with power.”2 aNow after six days Jesus tookPeter, James, and John, and ledthem up on a high mountain apartby themselves; and He was transfig-ured before them.3 His clothes became shining, exceedingly awhite, like snow, suchas no launderer on earth can whitenthem.4 And Elijah appeared to themwith Moses, and they were talkingwith Jesus.5 Then Peter answered and saidto Jesus, “Rabbi, it is good for us tobe here; and let us make three tab-ernacles: one for You, one for Moses, and one for Elijah”—6 because he did not know whatto say, for they were greatly afraid.7 And a acloud came and over-shadowed them; and a voice cameout of the cloud, saying, “This is bMybeloved Son. cHear Him!”8 Suddenly, when they had lookedaround, they saw no one anymore, but only Jesus with themselves.9 aNow as they came down fromthe mountain, He commanded themthat they should tell no one thethings they had seen, till the Son ofMan had risen from the dead.10 So they kept this word to them-selves, questioning awhat the risingfrom the dead meant.11 And they asked Him, saying,“Why do the scribes say athat Elijahmust come first?”12 Then He answered and toldthem, “Indeed, Elijah is coming firstand restores all things. And ahow is itwritten concerning the Son of Man,that He must suffer many things andbbe treated with contempt?13 “But I say to you that aElijah hasalso come, and they did to himwhatever they wished, as it is writ-ten of him.”

A Boy Is Healed

14 aAnd when He came to the disci-ples, He saw a great multitudearound them, and scribes disputingwith them.15 Immediately, when they sawHim, all the people were greatlyamazed, and running to Him, greetedHim.16 And He asked the scribes, “Whatare you discussing with them?”17 Then aone of the crowd answeredand said, “Teacher, I brought You myson, who has a mute spirit.18 “And wherever it seizes him, itthrows him down; he foams at themouth, gnashes his teeth, andbecomes rigid. So I spoke to Your dis-ciples, that they should cast it out,but they could not.”19 He answered him and said, “O

afaithless1 generation, how longshall I be with you? How long shallI 2bear with you? Bring him to Me.”20 Then they brought him to Him.And awhen he saw Him, immediatelythe spirit convulsed him, and he fellon the ground and wallowed, foam-ing at the mouth.21 So He asked his father, “Howlong has this been happening tohim?” And he said, “From childhood.22 “And often he has thrown himboth into the fire and into the waterto destroy him. But if You can doanything, have compassion on usand help us.”23 Jesus said to him, a“If1 you canbelieve, all things are possible tohim who believes.”24 Immediately the father of thechild cried out and said with tears,“Lord, I believe; ahelp my unbelief!”25 When Jesus saw that the peoplecame running together, He arebukedthe unclean spirit, saying to it: “Deafand dumb spirit, I command you, come out of him and enter him nomore!”26 Then the spirit cried out, con-vulsed him greatly, and came out ofhim. And he became as one dead, sothat many said, “He is dead.”27 But Jesus took him by the handand lifted him up, and he arose.28 aAnd when He had come intothe house, His disciples asked Himprivately, “Why could we not cast itout?”29 So He said to them, “This kindcan come out by nothing but aprayer1and fasting.”

Jesus Again Predicts His Death andResurrection

30 Then they departed from thereand passed through Galilee, and Hedid not want anyone to know it.31 aFor He taught His disciples andsaid to them, “The Son of Man isbeing betrayed into the hands ofmen, and they will bkill Him. Andafter He is killed, He will crise thethird day.”32 But they adid not understandthis saying, and were afraid to askHim.

Who Is the Greatest?

33 aThen He came to Capernaum. And when He was in the house Heasked them, “What was it you 1dis-puted among yourselves on theroad?”34 But they kept silent, for on theroad they had adisputed amongthemselves who would be thebgreatest.35 And He sat down, called thetwelve, and said to them, a“If anyonedesires to be first, he shall be last ofall and servant of all.”36 Then aHe took a little child andset him in the midst of them. when He had taken him in His arms,He said to them,37 “Whoever receives one of theselittle children in My name receivesMe; and awhoever receives Me,receives not Me but Him who sentMe.”

Jesus Forbids Sectarianism

38 aNow John answered Him, say-ing, “Teacher, we saw someone whodoes not follow us casting outdemons in Your name, and we for-bade him because he does not fol-low us.”39 But Jesus said, “Do not forbidhim, afor no one who works a mira-cle in My name can soon afterwardspeak evil of Me.40 “For ahe who is not against 1us ison 2our side.41 a“For whoever gives you a cup ofwater to drink in My name, becauseyou belong to Christ, assuredly, Isay to you, he will by no means losehis reward.

Jesus Warns of Offenses

42 a“But whoever causes one ofthese little ones who believe in Me1to stumble, it would be better forhim if a millstone were hung aroundhis neck, and he were thrown intothe sea.43 a“If your hand causes you to sin,cut it off. It is better for you to enterinto life 1maimed, rather than hav-ing two hands, to go to 2hell, into thefire that shall never be quenched—44 1“where

a‘Their worm does not dieAnd the fire is not quenched.’

45 “And if your foot causes you tosin, cut it off. It is better for you toenter life lame, rather than havingtwo feet, to be cast into 1hell, 2into thefire that shall never be quenched—46 “where

a‘Their worm does not dieAnd the fire is not quenched.’

47 “And if your eye causes you tosin, pluck it out. It is better for youto enter the kingdom of God withone eye, rather than having twoeyes, to be cast into 1hell fire—48 “where

a‘Their worm does not dieAnd the bfire is not quenched.’

Tasteless Salt Is Worthless

49 “For everyone will be aseasonedwith fire, band1 every sacrifice willbe seasoned with salt.50 a“Salt is good, but if the saltloses its flavor, how will you seasonit? bHave salt in yourselves, andchave peace with one another.”

Marriage and Divorce

10 Then aHe arose from there and came to the region of

Judea by the other side of the Jor-dan. And multitudes gathered toHim again, and as He was accus-tomed, He taught them again.2 aThe Pharisees came and askedHim, “Is it lawful for a man todivorce his wife?” testing Him.3 And He answered and said tothem, “What did Moses commandyou?”4 They said, a“Moses permitted aman to write a certificate of divorce, and to dismiss her.”5 And Jesus answered and said tothem, “Because of the hardness ofyour heart he wrote you this 1pre-cept.6 “But from the beginning of thecreation, God a‘made them male andfemale.’7 a‘For this reason a man shallleave his father and mother and bejoined to his wife,8 ‘and the two shall become oneflesh’; so then they are no longer two,but one flesh.9 “Therefore what God has joinedtogether, let not man separate.”10 In the house His disciples alsoasked Him again about the samematter.11 So He said to them, a“Whoeverdivorces his wife and marriesanother commits adultery againsther.12 “And if a woman divorces herhusband and marries another, shecommits adultery.”

Jesus Blesses Little Children

13 aThen they brought little chil-dren to Him, that He might touchthem; but the disciples rebukedthose who brought them.14 But when Jesus saw it, He wasgreatly displeased and said to them,“Let the little children come to Me,and do not forbid them; for aof suchis the kingdom of God.15 “Assuredly, I say to you, awho-ever does not receive the kingdomof God as a little child will bby nomeans enter it.”16 And He took them up in Hisarms, laid His hands on them, andblessed them.

Jesus Counsels the Rich YoungRuler

17 aNow as He was going out on theroad, one came running, knelt beforeHim, and asked Him, “Good Teacher, what shall I bdo that I may inheriteternal life?”18 So Jesus said to him, “Why doyou call Me good? With God All Things Are Possible

23 aThen Jesus looked around andsaid to His disciples, “How hard it isfor those who have riches to enterthe kingdom of God!”24 And the disciples were aston-ished at His words. But Jesusanswered again and said to them,“Children, how hard it is 1for thoseawho trust in riches to enter thekingdom of God!25 “It is easier for a camel to gothrough the eye of a needle than fora arich man to enter the kingdom ofGod.”26 And they were greatly aston-ished, saying among themselves,“Who then can be saved?”27 But Jesus looked at them andsaid, “With men it is impossible, butnot awith God; for with God all thingsare possible.”28 aThen Peter began to say toHim, “See, we have left all and fol-lowed You.”29 So Jesus answered and said,“Assuredly, I say to you, there is noone who has left house or brothersor sisters or father or mother 1orwife or children or 2lands, for Mysake and the gospel’s,30 a“who shall not receive a hun-dredfold now in this time—housesand brothers and sisters and moth-ers and children and lands, withbpersecutions—and in the age tocome, eternal life.31 a“But many who are first will belast, and the last first.”

Jesus a Third Time Predicts HisDeath and Resurrection

32 aNow they were on the road, going up to Jerusalem, and Jesuswas going before them; and theywere amazed. And as they followedthey were afraid. bThen He took thetwelve aside again and began to tellthem the things that would happento Him:33 “Behold, we are going up to Jeru-salem, and the Son of Man will bebetrayed to the chief priests and tothe scribes; and they will condemn

Him to death and deliver Him to theGentiles;34 “and they will mock Him, and1scourge Him, and spit on Him, andkill Him. And the third day He willrise again.”

Greatness Is Serving

35 aThen James and John, the sonsof Zebedee, came to Him, saying,“Teacher, we want You to do for uswhatever we ask.”36 And He said to them, “What doyou want Me to do for you?”37 They said to Him, “Grant us thatwe may sit, one on Your right handand the other on Your left, in Yourglory.”38 But Jesus said to them, “You donot know what you ask. Are youable to drink the acup that I drink, and be baptized with the bbaptismthat I am baptized with?”39 They said to Him, “We are able.”So Jesus said to them, a“You willindeed drink the cup that I drink, and with the baptism I am baptizedwith you will be baptized;40 “but to sit on My right hand andon My left is not Mine to give, but itis for those afor whom it is pre-pared.”41 aAnd when the ten heard it, theybegan to be greatly displeased withJames and John.42 But Jesus called them to Himselfand said to them, a“You know thatthose who are considered rulersover the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones exerciseauthority over them.43 a“Yet it shall not be so amongyou; but whoever desires to becomegreat among you shall be your ser-vant.44 “And whoever of you desires tobe first shall be slave of all.45 “For even athe Son of Man didnot come to be served, but to serve, and bto give His life a ransom formany.”

Jesus Heals Blind Bartimaeus

46 aNow they came to Jericho. AsHe went out of Jericho with His dis-ciples and a great multitude, blindBartimaeus, the son of Timaeus, satby the road begging.47 And when he heard that it wasJesus of Nazareth, he began to cryout and say, “Jesus, aSon of David, bhave mercy on me!”48 Then many warned him to bequiet; but he cried out all the more,“Son of David, have mercy on me!”49 So Jesus stood still and com-manded him to be called. Then theycalled the blind man, saying to him,“Be of good cheer. Rise, He is callingyou.”50 And throwing aside his gar-ment, he rose and came to Jesus.

891 MARK 11:29

51 So Jesus answered and said tohim, “What do you want Me to dofor you?” The blind man said toHim, 1“Rabboni, that I may receivemy sight.”52 Then Jesus said to him, “Goyour way; ayour faith has 1made youwell.” And immediately he receivedhis sight and followed Jesus on theroad.

The Triumphal Entry

11 Now awhen they drew near Jerusalem, to 1Bethphage and

Bethany, at the Mount of Olives, Hesent two of His disciples;2 and He said to them, “Go intothe village opposite you; and assoon as you have entered it you willfind a colt tied, on which no one hassat. Loose it and bring it.3 “And if anyone says to you,‘Why are you doing this?’ say, ‘TheLord has need of it,’ and immedi-ately he will send it here.”4 So they went their way, andfound 1the colt tied by the door out-side on the street, and they loosed it.5 But some of those who stoodthere said to them, “What are youdoing, loosing the colt?”6 And they spoke to them just asJesus had commanded. So they letthem go.7 aThen they brought the colt toJesus and threw their clothes on it,and He sat on it.8 aAnd many spread their clotheson the road, and others cut downleafy branches from the trees andspread them on the road.9 Then those who went beforeand those who followed cried out, saying:

“Hosanna!a‘Blessed is He who comes in the

name of the LORD!’10 Blessed is the kingdom of our

father DavidThat comes 1in the name of the

Lord!aHosanna in the highest!”

11 aAnd Jesus went into Jerusalemand into the temple. So when Hehad looked around at all things, asthe hour was already late, He wentout to Bethany with the twelve.

The Fig Tree Withered

12 aNow the next day, when theyhad come out from Bethany, He washungry.13 aAnd seeing from afar a fig treehaving leaves, He went to see if per-haps He would find something on it.When He came to it, He found noth-ing but leaves, for it was not the sea-son for figs.14 In response Jesus said to it, “Let

no one eat fruit from you everagain.” And His disciples heard it.

Jesus Cleanses the Temple

15 aSo they came to Jerusalem. Then Jesus went into the temple andbegan to drive out those whobought and sold in the temple, andoverturned the tables of the moneychangers and the seats of those whosold bdoves.16 And He would not allow anyoneto carry wares through the temple.17 Then He taught, saying to them,“Is it not written, a‘My house shallbe called a house of prayer for allnations’ ? But you have made it ab‘den of thieves.’ ”18 And athe scribes and chiefpriests heard it and sought how theymight destroy Him; for they fearedHim, because ball the people wereastonished at His teaching.19 When evening had come, Hewent out of the city.

The Lesson of the Withered FigTree

20 aNow in the morning, as theypassed by, they saw the fig treedried up from the roots.21 And Peter, remembering, said toHim, “Rabbi, look! The fig treewhich You cursed has witheredaway.”22 So Jesus answered and said tothem, “Have faith in God.23 “For aassuredly, I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, ‘Beremoved and be cast into the sea,’and does not doubt in his heart, butbelieves that those things he sayswill be done, he will have whateverhe says.24 “Therefore I say to you, awhateverthings you ask when you pray, believethat you receive them, and you willhave them.

Forgiveness and Prayer

25 “And whenever you stand pray-ing, aif you have anything againstanyone, forgive him, that yourFather in heaven may also forgiveyou your trespasses.26 1“But aif you do not forgive, nei-ther will your Father in heaven for-give your trespasses.”

Jesus’ Authority Questioned

27 Then they came again toJerusalem. aAnd as He was walkingin the temple, the chief priests, thescribes, and the elders came to Him.28 And they said to Him, “By whataauthority are You doing thesethings? And who gave You thisauthority to do these things?”29 But Jesus answered and said tothem, “I also will ask you one ques-tion; then answer Me, and I will tell

you by what authority I do thesethings:30 “The abaptism of John—was itfrom heaven or from men? AnswerMe.”31 And they reasoned amongthemselves, saying, “If we say, ‘Fromheaven,’ He will say, ‘Why then didyou not believe him?’32 “But if we say, ‘From men’ ”—they feared the people, for aallcounted John to have been aprophet indeed.33 So they answered and said toJesus, “We do not know.” And Jesusanswered and said to them, “Neitherwill I tell you by what authority I dothese things.”

The Parable of the WickedVinedressers

12 Then aHe began to speak to them in parables: “A man

planted a vineyard and set a hedgearound it, dug a place for the winevat and built a tower. And he leasedit to 1vinedressers and went into afar country.2 “Now at vintage-time he sent aservant to the vinedressers, that hemight receive some of the fruit ofthe vineyard from the vinedressers.3 “And they took him and beathim and sent him away empty-handed.4 “Again he sent them another ser-vant, 1and at him they threw stones, wounded him in the head, and senthim away shamefully treated.5 “And again he sent another, andhim they killed; and many others, abeating some and killing some.6 “Therefore still having one son,his beloved, he also sent him tothem last, saying, ‘They will respectmy son.’7 “But those 1vinedressers saidamong themselves, ‘This is the heir.Come, let us kill him, and the inher-itance will be ours.’8 “So they took him and akilledhim and cast him out of the vine-yard.9 “Therefore what will the ownerof the vineyard do? He will comeand destroy the vinedressers, andgive the vineyard to others.10 “Have you not even read thisScripture:

a‘The stone which the buildersrejected

Has become the chiefcornerstone.

11 This was the LORD’s doing,And it is marvelous in our

eyes’? ”

12 aAnd they sought to lay handson Him, but feared the multitude, for they knew He had spoken theparable against them. So they leftHim and went away.

The Pharisees: Is It Lawful to PayTaxes to Caesar?

13 aThen they sent to Him some ofthe Pharisees and the Herodians, tocatch Him in His words.14 When they had come, they saidto Him, “Teacher, we know that Youare true, and 1care about no one; forYou do not 2regard the person ofmen, but teach the away of God intruth. Is it lawful to pay taxes toCaesar, or not?15 “Shall we pay, or shall we notpay?” But He, knowing theirahypocrisy, said to them, “Why doyou test Me? Bring Me a denariusthat I may see it.”16 So they brought it. And He saidto them, “Whose image and inscrip-tion is this?” They said to Him, “Cae-sar’s.”17 And Jesus answered and said tothem, 1“Render to Caesar the thingsthat are Caesar’s, and to aGod thethings that are God’s.” And theymarveled at Him.

The Sadducees: What About theResurrection?

18 aThen some Sadducees, bwhosay there is no resurrection, came toHim; and they asked Him, saying:19 “Teacher, aMoses wrote to usthat if a man’s brother dies, andleaves his wife behind, and leavesno children, his brother should takehis wife and raise up offspring forhis brother.20 “Now there were seven broth-ers. The first took a wife; and dying,he left no offspring.21 “And the second took her, andhe died; nor did he leave any off-spring. And the third likewise.22 “So the seven had her and leftno offspring. Last of all the womandied also.23 “Therefore, in the resurrection, when they rise, whose wife will shebe? For all seven had her as wife.”24 Jesus answered and said tothem, “Are you not therefore 1mis-taken, because you do not know theScriptures nor the power of God?25 “For when they rise from thedead, they neither marry nor aregiven in marriage, but aare likeangels in heaven.26 “But concerning the dead, thatthey arise, have you not read in thebook of Moses, in the burning bushpassage, how God spoke to him, say-ing, b‘I am the God of Abraham, theGod of Isaac, and the God of Jacob’ ?27 “He is not the God of the dead, but the God of the living. You aretherefore greatly 1mistaken.”

gether, 1perceiving that He hadanswered them well, asked Him,“Which is the 2first commandment ofall?”29 Jesus answered him, “The 1firstof all the commandments is: a‘Hear,O Israel, the LORD our God, theLORD is one.30 ‘And you shall alove the LORD

your God with all your heart, with allyour soul, with all your mind, andwith all your strength.’ 1This is thefirst commandment.31 “And the second, like it, is this:a‘You shall love your neighbor asyourself.’ There is no other com-mandment greater than bthese.”32 So the scribe said to Him, “Wellsaid, Teacher. You have spoken thetruth, for there is one God, aandthere is no other but He.33 “And to love Him with all theheart, with all the understanding,1with all the soul, and with all thestrength, and to love one’s neighboras oneself, ais more than all the wholeburnt offerings and sacrifices.”34 Now when Jesus saw that heanswered wisely, He said to him,“You are not far from the kingdomof God.” aBut after that no one daredquestion Him.

Jesus: How Can David Call HisDescendant Lord?

35 aThen Jesus answered and said, while He taught in the temple, “Howis it that the scribes say that theChrist is the Son of David?36 “For David himself said aby theHoly Spirit:

b‘The LORD said to my Lord,“Sit at My right hand,Till I make Your enemies Your

footstool.” ’

37 “Therefore David himself callsHim ‘Lord’; how is He then hisaSon?” And the common peopleheard Him gladly.

Beware of the Scribes

38 Then aHe said to them in Histeaching, b“Beware of the scribes, who desire to go around in longrobes, clove greetings in the market-places,39 “the abest seats in the syna-gogues, and the best places atfeasts,40 a“who devour widows’ houses, and 1for a pretense make longprayers. These will receive greatercondemnation.”

The Widow’s Two Mites

41 aNow Jesus sat opposite thetreasury and saw how the peopleput money binto the treasury. Andmany who were rich put in much.42 Then one poor widow came and

threw in two 1mites, which make a2quadrans.43 So He called His disciples toHimself and said to them, “Assuredly,I say to you that athis poor widowhas put in more than all those whohave given to the treasury;44 “for they all put in out of theirabundance, but she out of herpoverty put in all that she had, aherwhole livelihood.”

Jesus Predicts the Destruction ofthe Temple

13 Then aas He went out of the temple, one of His disciples

said to Him, “Teacher, see whatmanner of stones and what build-ings are here!”2 And Jesus answered and said tohim, “Do you see these great build-ings? aNot one stone shall be leftupon another, that shall not bethrown down.”

The Signs of the Times and the Endof the Age

3 Now as He sat on the Mount ofOlives opposite the temple, aPeter,bJames, cJohn, and dAndrew askedHim privately,4 a“Tell us, when will these thingsbe? And what will be the sign whenall these things will be fulfilled?”5 And Jesus, answering them, began to say: a“Take heed that noone deceives you.6 “For many will come in Myname, saying, ‘I am He,’ and willdeceive many.7 “But when you hear of wars andrumors of wars, do not be troubled;for such things must happen, butthe end is not yet.8 “For nation will rise againstnation, and akingdom against king-dom. And there will be earthquakesin various places, and there will befamines 1and troubles. bThese arethe beginnings of 2sorrows.9 “But awatch out for yourselves, for they will deliver you up to coun-cils, and you will be beaten in thesynagogues. You will 1be broughtbefore rulers and kings for My sake, for a testimony to them.10 “And athe gospel must first bepreached to all the nations.11 a“But when they arrest you anddeliver you up, do not worry before-hand, 1or premeditate what you willspeak. But whatever is given you inthat hour, speak that; for it is notyou who speak, bbut the Holy Spirit.12 “Now abrother will betraybrother to death, and a father hischild; and children will rise upagainst parents and cause them tobe put to death.13 a“And you will be hated by allfor My name’s sake. But bhe who1endures to the end shall be saved.

MARK 13:14 894

The Great Tribulation

14 a“So when you see the b‘abomi-nation of desolation,’ 1spoken of byDaniel the prophet, standing whereit ought not” (let the reader under-stand), “then clet those who are inJudea flee to the mountains.15 “Let him who is on the housetopnot go down into the house, nor enterto take anything out of his house.16 “And let him who is in the fieldnot go back to get his clothes.17 a“But woe to those who arepregnant and to those who are nurs-ing babies in those days!18 “And pray that your flight maynot be in winter.19 a“For in those days there will betribulation, such as has not beensince the beginning of the creationwhich God created until this time, nor ever shall be.20 “And unless the Lord had short-ened those days, no flesh would besaved; but for the elect’s sake, whomHe chose, He shortened the days.21 a“Then if anyone says to you,‘Look, here is the Christ!’ or, ‘Look,He is there!’ do not believe it.22 “For false christs and falseprophets will rise and show signsand awonders to deceive, if possible, even the 1elect.23 “But atake heed; see, I have toldyou all things beforehand.

The Coming of the Son of Man

24 a“But in those days, after thattribulation, the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light;25 “the stars of heaven will fall, and the powers in the heavens willbe ashaken.26 a“Then they will see the Son ofMan coming in the clouds withgreat power and glory.27 “And then He will send Hisangels, and gather together His1elect from the four winds, from thefarthest part of earth to the farthestpart of heaven.

The Parable of the Fig Tree

28 a“Now learn this parable fromthe fig tree: When its branch hasalready become tender, and putsforth leaves, you know that summeris near.29 “So you also, when you seethese things happening, know that1it is near—at the doors!30 “Assuredly, I say to you, thisgeneration will by no means passaway till all these things take place.31 “Heaven and earth will passaway, but aMy words will by nomeans pass away.

No One Knows the Day or Hour

32 “But of that day and hour ano oneknows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the bFather.

33 a“Take heed, watch and pray; foryou do not know when the time is.34 a“It is like a man going to a farcountry, who left his house and gavebauthority to his servants, and toeach his work, and commanded thedoorkeeper to watch.35 a“Watch therefore, for you donot know when the master of thehouse is coming—in the evening, atmidnight, at the crowing of the roos-ter, or in the morning—36 “lest, coming suddenly, he findyou sleeping.37 “And what I say to you, I say toall: Watch!”

The Plot to Kill Jesus

14 After atwo days it was the Passover and bthe Feast of

Unleavened Bread. And the chiefpriests and the scribes sought howthey might take Him by 1trickeryand put Him to death.2 But they said, “Not during thefeast, lest there be an uproar of thepeople.”

The Anointing at Bethany

3 aAnd being in Bethany at thehouse of Simon the leper, as He sat atthe table, a woman came having analabaster flask of very costly 1oil ofspikenard. Then she broke the flaskand poured it on His head.4 But there were some who wereindignant among themselves, andsaid, “Why was this fragrant oilwasted?5 “For it might have been sold formore than three hundred adenariiand given to the poor.” And theybcriticized1 her sharply.6 But Jesus said, “Let her alone. Why do you trouble her? She hasdone a good work for Me.7 a“For you have the poor withyou always, and whenever you wishyou may do them good; bbut Me youdo not have always.8 “She has done what she could. She has come beforehand to anointMy body for burial.9 “Assuredly, I say to you, wher-ever this gospel is apreached in thewhole world, what this woman hasdone will also be told as a memorialto her.”

Judas Agrees to Betray Jesus

10 aThen Judas Iscariot, one of thetwelve, went to the chief priests tobetray Him to them.11 And when they heard it, theywere glad, and promised to give himmoney. So he sought how he mightconveniently betray Him.

Him, “Where do You want us to goand prepare, that You may eat thePassover?”13 And He sent out two of His dis-ciples and said to them, “Go into thecity, and a man will meet you carry-ing a pitcher of water; follow him.14 “Wherever he goes in, say to themaster of the house, ‘The Teachersays, “Where is the guest room inwhich I may eat the Passover withMy disciples?” ’15 “Then he will show you a largeupper room, furnished and pre-pared; there make ready for us.”16 So His disciples went out, andcame into the city, and found it justas He had said to them; and theyprepared the Passover.17 aIn the evening He came withthe twelve.18 Now as they sat and ate, Jesussaid, “Assuredly, I say to you, aone ofyou who eats with Me will betrayMe.”19 And they began to be sorrowful, and to say to Him one by one, “Is itI?” 1And another said, “Is it I?”20 He answered and said to them,“It is one of the twelve, who dipswith Me in the dish.21 a“The Son of Man indeed goesjust as it is written of Him, but woeto that man by whom the Son ofMan is betrayed! It would have beengood for that man if he had neverbeen born.”

Jesus Institutes the Lord’s Supper

22 aAnd as they were eating, Jesustook bread, blessed and broke it,and gave it to them and said, “Take,1eat; this is My bbody.”23 Then He took the cup, and whenHe had given thanks He gave it tothem, and they all drank from it.24 And He said to them, “This isMy blood of the 1new covenant, which is shed for many.25 “Assuredly, I say to you, I will nolonger drink of the fruit of the vineuntil that day when I drink it new inthe kingdom of God.”26 aAnd when they had sung 1ahymn, they went out to the Mount ofOlives.

Jesus Predicts Peter’s Denial

27 aThen Jesus said to them, “All of you will be made to stumble1because of Me this night, for it iswritten:

b‘I will strike the Shepherd,And the sheep will be

scattered.’

28 “But aafter I have been raised, Iwill go before you to Galilee.”29 aPeter said to Him, “Even if allare made to 1stumble, yet I will notbe.”30 Jesus said to him, “Assuredly, I

say to you that today, even thisnight, before the rooster crowstwice, you will deny Me threetimes.”31 But he spoke more vehemently,“If I have to die with You, I will notdeny You!” And they all said like-wise.

The Prayer in the Garden

32 aThen they came to a placewhich was named Gethsemane; andHe said to His disciples, “Sit herewhile I pray.”33 And He atook Peter, James, andJohn with Him, and He began to betroubled and deeply distressed.34 Then He said to them, a“My soulis exceedingly sorrowful, even todeath. Stay here and watch.”35 He went a little farther, and fellon the ground, and prayed that if itwere possible, the hour might passfrom Him.36 And He said, a“Abba, Father, ballthings are possible for You. Take thiscup away from Me; cnevertheless, not what I will, but what You will.”37 Then He came and found themsleeping, and said to Peter, “Simon, are you sleeping? Could you notwatch one hour?38 a“Watch and pray, lest you enterinto temptation. bThe spirit indeed iswilling, but the flesh is weak.”39 Again He went away andprayed, and spoke the same words.40 And when He returned, Hefound them asleep again, for theireyes were heavy; and they did notknow what to answer Him.41 Then He came the third timeand said to them, “Are you stillsleeping and resting? It is enough!aThe hour has come; behold, theSon of Man is being betrayed intothe hands of sinners.42 a“Rise, let us be going. See, Mybetrayer is at hand.”

Betrayal and Arrest in Gethsemane

43 aAnd immediately, while He wasstill speaking, Judas, one of thetwelve, with a great multitude withswords and clubs, came from thechief priests and the scribes and theelders.44 Now His betrayer had giventhem a signal, saying, “Whomever Iakiss, He is the One; seize Him andlead Him away safely.”45 As soon as he had come, imme-diately he went up to Him and saidto Him, “Rabbi, Rabbi!” and kissedHim.46 Then they laid their hands onHim and took Him.47 And one of those who stood bydrew his sword and struck the ser-vant of the high priest, and cut offhis ear.48 aThen Jesus answered and saidto them, “Have you come out, as

A Young Man Flees Naked

51 Now a certain young man fol-lowed Him, having a linen cloththrown around his naked body. Andthe young men laid hold of him,52 and he left the linen cloth andfled from them naked.

Jesus Faces the Sanhedrin

53 aAnd they led Jesus away to thehigh priest; and with him werebassembled all the cchief priests, theelders, and the scribes.54 But aPeter followed Him at a dis-tance, right into the courtyard of thehigh priest. And he sat with the ser-vants and warmed himself at the fire.55 aNow the chief priests and all thecouncil sought testimony againstJesus to put Him to death, but foundnone.56 For many bore afalse witnessagainst Him, but their testimonies1did not agree.57 aThen some rose up and borefalse witness against Him, saying,58 “We heard Him say, a‘I willdestroy this temple made withhands, and within three days I willbuild another made without hands.’ ”59 But not even then did their testi-mony agree.60 aAnd the high priest stood up inthe midst and asked Jesus, saying,“Do You answer nothing? What is itthese men testify against You?”61 But aHe kept silent and answerednothing. bAgain the high priest askedHim, saying to Him, “Are You theChrist, the Son of the Blessed?”62 Jesus said, “I am. aAnd you willsee the Son of Man sitting at theright hand of the Power, and comingwith the clouds of heaven.”63 Then the high priest tore hisclothes and said, “What further needdo we have of witnesses?64 “You have heard the ablasphemy! What do you think?” And they allcondemned Him to be deserving ofbdeath.65 Then some began to aspit onHim, and to blindfold Him, and tobeat Him, and to say to Him, “Proph-esy!” And the officers 1struck Himwith the palms of their hands.

Peter Denies Jesus, and Weeps

66 aNow as Peter was below in thecourtyard, one of the servant girls ofthe high priest came.67 And when she saw Peter warm-ing himself, she looked at him and

said, “You also were with aJesus ofNazareth.”68 But he denied it, saying, “I nei-ther know nor understand what youare saying.” And he went out on theporch, and a rooster crowed.69 aAnd the servant girl saw himagain, and began to say to thosewho stood by, “This is one of them.”70 But he denied it again. aAnd alittle later those who stood by saidto Peter again, “Surely you are oneof them; bfor you are a Galilean,1and your 2speech shows it.”71 Then he began to curse andswear, “I do not know this Man ofwhom you speak!”72 aA second time the roostercrowed. Then Peter called to mindthe word that Jesus had said to him,“Before the rooster crows twice, youwill deny Me three times.” Andwhen he thought about it, he wept.

Jesus Faces Pilate

15 Immediately, ain the morning, the chief priests held a con-

sultation with the elders and scribesand the whole council; and theybound Jesus, led Him away, and bde-livered Him to Pilate.2 aThen Pilate asked Him, “AreYou the King of the Jews?” Heanswered and said to him, “It is asyou say.”3 And the chief priests accusedHim of many things, but He aan-swered nothing.4 aThen Pilate asked Him again, saying, “Do You answer nothing?See how many things 1they testifyagainst You!”5 aBut Jesus still answered noth-ing, so that Pilate marveled.

Taking the Place of Barabbas

6 Now aat the feast he was accus-tomed to releasing one prisoner tothem, whomever they requested.7 And there was one namedBarabbas, who was chained withhis fellow rebels; they had commit-ted murder in the rebellion.8 Then the multitude, 1cryingaloud, began to ask him to do just ashe had always done for them.9 But Pilate answered them, say-ing, “Do you want me to release toyou the King of the Jews?”10 For he knew that the chiefpriests had handed Him overbecause of envy.11 But athe chief priests stirred upthe crowd, so that he should ratherrelease Barabbas to them.12 Pilate answered and said tothem again, “What then do youwant me to do with Him whom youcall the aKing of the Jews?”13 So they cried out again, “Cru-cify Him!”14 Then Pilate said to them, “Why,

897 MARK 16:2awhat evil has He done?” But theycried out all the more, “CrucifyHim!”15 aSo Pilate, wanting to gratify thecrowd, released Barabbas to them;and he delivered Jesus, after he hadscourged Him, to be bcrucified.

The Soldiers Mock Jesus

16 aThen the soldiers led Him awayinto the hall called 1Praetorium, andthey called together the whole garri-son.17 And they clothed Him with pur-ple; and they twisted a crown ofthorns, put it on His head,18 and began to salute Him, “Hail,King of the Jews!”19 Then they astruck Him on thehead with a reed and spat on Him;and bowing the knee, they wor-shiped Him.20 And when they had amockedHim, they took the purple off Him,put His own clothes on Him, and ledHim out to crucify Him.

The King on a Cross

21 aThen they compelled a certainman, Simon a Cyrenian, the fatherof Alexander and Rufus, as he wascoming out of the country and pass-ing by, to bear His cross.22 aAnd they brought Him to theplace Golgotha, which is translated,Place of a Skull.23 aThen they gave Him wine min-gled with myrrh to drink, but He didnot take it.24 And when they crucified Him,athey divided His garments, castinglots for them to determine whatevery man should take.25 Now ait was the third hour, andthey crucified Him.26 And athe inscription of His1accusation was written above:

THE KING OF THE JEWS.

27 aWith Him they also crucifiedtwo robbers, one on His right andthe other on His left.28 1So the Scripture was fulfilledwhich says, a“And He was num-bered with the transgressors.”29 And athose who passed by blas-phemed Him, bwagging their headsand saying, “Aha! cYou who destroythe temple and build it in threedays,30 “save Yourself, and come downfrom the cross!”31 Likewise the chief priests also, amocking among themselves withthe scribes, said, “He saved bothers;Himself He cannot save.32 “Let the Christ, the King ofIsrael, descend now from the cross, that we may see and 1believe.”Even athose who were crucifiedwith Him reviled Him.
