Satan Tempts Jesus

12 aImmediately the Spirit 1droveHim into the wilderness.13 And He was there in the wilder-ness forty days, tempted by Satan,and was with the wild beasts; aandthe angels ministered to Him.

Jesus Begins His Galilean Ministry

14 aNow after John was put inprison, Jesus came to Galilee,bpreaching the gospel 1of the king-dom of God,15 and saying, a“The time is fulfilled,and bthe kingdom of God 1is at hand.Repent, and believe in the gospel.”

Four Fishermen Called as Disciples

16 aAnd as He walked by the Sea ofGalilee, He saw Simon and Andrewhis brother casting a net into thesea; for they were fishermen.17 Then Jesus said to them, “Fol-low Me, and I will make you becomeafishers of men.”18 aThey immediately left theirnets and followed Him.19 When He had gone a little far-ther from there, He saw James theson of Zebedee, and John hisbrother, who also were in the boatmending their nets.20 And immediately He calledthem, and they left their fatherZebedee in the boat with the hiredservants, and went after Him.

Jesus Casts Out an Unclean Spirit

21 aThen they went into Caper-naum, and immediately on the Sab-bath He entered the bsynagogue andtaught.22 aAnd they were astonished atHis teaching, for He taught them asone having authority, and not as thescribes.23 Now there was a man in theirsynagogue with an aunclean spirit.And he cried out,24 saying, “Let us alone! aWhathave we to do with You, Jesus ofNazareth? Did You come to destroyus? I bknow who You are—the cHolyOne of God!”25 But Jesus arebuked him, saying,1“Be quiet, and come out of him!”

26 And when the unclean spirit ahadconvulsed him and cried out with aloud voice, he came out of him.27 Then they were all amazed, sothat they questioned among them-selves, saying, 1“What is this? Whatnew 2doctrine is this? For withauthority He commands even theunclean spirits, and they obey Him.”28 And immediately His afamespread throughout all the regionaround Galilee.

Peter’s Mother-in-Law Healed

29 aNow as soon as they had comeout of the synagogue, they enteredthe house of Simon and Andrew,with James and John.30 But Simon’s wife’s mother laysick with a fever, and they told Himabout her at once.31 So He came and took her by thehand and lifted her up, and immedi-ately the fever left her. And sheserved them.

Many Healed After Sabbath Sunset

32 aAt evening, when the sun hadset, they brought to Him all whowere sick and those who weredemon-possessed.33 And the whole city was gath-ered together at the door.34 Then He healed many who weresick with various diseases, and acastout many demons; and He bdid notallow the demons to speak, becausethey knew Him.

Preaching in Galilee

35 Now ain the morning, havingrisen a long while before daylight,He went out and departed to a 1soli-tary place; and there He bprayed.36 And Simon and those who werewith Him searched for Him.37 When they found Him, they saidto Him, a“Everyone bis looking forYou.”38 But He said to them, a“Let us gointo the next towns, that I maypreach there also, because bfor thispurpose I have come forth.”39 aAnd He was preaching in theirsynagogues throughout all Galilee,and bcasting out demons.

Jesus Cleanses a Leper

40 aNow a leper came to Him,imploring Him, kneeling down toHim and saying to Him, “If You arewilling,You can make me clean.”41 Then Jesus, moved with acom-passion, stretched out His hand andtouched him, and said to him, “I amwilling; be cleansed.”42 As soon as He had spoken, aim-mediately the leprosy left him, andhe was cleansed.43 And He strictly warned him andsent him away at once,44 and said to him, “See that you

say nothing to anyone; but go yourway, show yourself to the priest, andoffer for your cleansing those thingsawhich Moses commanded, as a tes-timony to them.”45 aHowever, he went out andbegan to proclaim it freely, and tospread the matter, so that Jesuscould no longer openly enter thecity, but was outside in desertedplaces; band they came to Him fromevery direction.

Jesus Forgives and Heals aParalytic

2 And again aHe entered Caper-naum after some days, and it

was heard that He was in the house.2 1Immediately many gatheredtogether, so that there was no longerroom to receive them, not even nearthe door. And He preached the wordto them.3 Then they came to Him, bring-ing a aparalytic who was carried byfour men.4 And when they could not comenear Him because of the crowd,they uncovered the roof where Hewas. So when they had brokenthrough, they let down the bed onwhich the paralytic was lying.5 When Jesus saw their faith, Hesaid to the paralytic, “Son, your sinsare forgiven you.”6 And some of the scribes weresitting there and reasoning in theirhearts,7 “Why does this Man speak blas-phemies like this? aWho can forgivesins but God alone?”8 But immediately, when Jesusperceived in His spirit that they rea-soned thus within themselves, Hesaid to them, “Why do you reasonabout these things in your hearts?9 a“Which is easier, to say to theparalytic, ‘Your sins are forgivenyou,’ or to say, ‘Arise, take up yourbed and walk’?10 “But that you may know that theSon of Man has 1power on earth toforgive sins”—He said to the para-lytic,11 “I say to you, arise, take up yourbed, and go to your house.”12 Immediately he arose, took upthe bed, and went out in the pres-ence of them all, so that all wereamazed and aglorified God, saying,“We never saw anything like this!”

Matthew the Tax Collector

13 aThen He went out again by thesea; and all the multitude came toHim, and He taught them.14 aAs He passed by, He saw Levithe son of Alphaeus sitting at the taxoffice. And He said to him, b“FollowMe.” So he arose and cfollowed Him.15 aNow it happened, as He wasdining in Levi’s house, that many taxcollectors and sinners also sat to-

gether with Jesus and His disciples;for there were many, and they fol-lowed Him.16 And when the scribes 1andPharisees saw Him eating with thetax collectors and sinners, they saidto His disciples, “How is it that Heeats and drinks with tax collectorsand sinners?”17 When Jesus heard it, He said tothem, a“Those who are well have noneed of a physician, but those whoare sick. Jesus Is Questioned About Fasting

18 aThe disciples of John and of thePharisees were fasting. Then theycame and said to Him, “Why do thedisciples of John and of the Phariseesfast, but Your disciples do not fast?”19 And Jesus said to them, “Canthe 1friends of the bridegroom fastwhile the bridegroom is with them?As long as they have the bride-groom with them they cannot fast.20 “But the days will come whenthe bridegroom will be ataken awayfrom them, and then they will fast inthose days.21 “No one sews a piece of un-shrunk cloth on an old garment; orelse the new piece pulls away fromthe old, and the tear is made worse.22 “And no one puts new wine intoold wineskins; or else the new winebursts the wineskins, the wine isspilled, and the wineskins areruined. But new wine must be putinto new wineskins.”

Jesus Is Lord of the Sabbath

23 aNow it happened that He wentthrough the grainfields on the Sab-bath; and as they went His disciplesbegan bto pluck the heads of grain.24 And the Pharisees said to Him,“Look, why do they do what is anotlawful on the Sabbath?”25 But He said to them, “Have younever read awhat David did when hewas in need and hungry, he andthose with him:26 “how he went into the house ofGod in the days of Abiathar the highpriest, and ate the showbread,awhich is not lawful to eat except forthe priests, and also gave some tothose who were with him?”27 And He said to them, “The Sab-bath was made for man, and notman for the aSabbath.28 “Therefore athe Son of Man isalso Lord of the Sabbath.”

Sabbath, so that they might 1accuseHim.3 And He said to the man who hadthe withered hand, 1“Step forward.”4 Then He said to them, “Is it law-ful on the Sabbath to do good or todo evil, to save life or to kill?” Butthey kept silent.5 And when He had lookedaround at them with anger, beinggrieved by the ahardness of theirhearts, He said to the man, “Stretchout your hand.” And he stretched itout, and his hand was restored 1aswhole as the other.6 aThen the Pharisees went outand immediately plotted with btheHerodians against Him, how theymight destroy Him.

A Great Multitude Follows Jesus

7 But Jesus withdrew with Hisdisciples to the sea. And a greatmultitude from Galilee followedHim, aand from Judea8 and Jerusalem and Idumea andbeyond the Jordan; and those fromTyre and Sidon, a great multitude,when they heard how amany thingsHe was doing, came to Him.9 So He told His disciples that asmall boat should be kept ready forHim because of the multitude, lestthey should crush Him.10 For He healed amany, so that asmany as had afflictions pressedabout Him to btouch Him.11 aAnd the unclean spirits, when-ever they saw Him, fell down beforeHim and cried out, saying, b“You arethe Son of God.”12 But aHe sternly warned them thatthey should not make Him known.

The Twelve Apostles

13 aAnd He went up on the moun-tain and called to Him those He Him-self wanted. And they came to Him.14 Then He appointed twelve, 1thatthey might be with Him and that Hemight send them out to preach,15 and to have 1power 2to heal sick-nesses and to cast out demons:16 1Simon, ato whom He gave thename Peter;17 James the son of Zebedee andJohn the brother of James, to whomHe gave the name Boanerges, thatis, “Sons of Thunder”;18 Andrew, Philip, Bartholomew,Matthew, Thomas, James the son ofAlphaeus, Thaddaeus, Simon theCananite;19 and Judas Iscariot, who alsobetrayed Him. A House Divided Cannot Stand

20 Then the multitude came to-gether again, aso that they could notso much as eat bread.21 But when His aown people heardabout this, they went out to lay hold

of Him, bfor they said, “He is out ofHis mind.”22 And the scribes who came downfrom Jerusalem said, a“He hasBeelzebub,” and, “By the bruler ofthe demons He casts out demons.”23 aSo He called them to Himselfand said to them in parables: “Howcan Satan cast out Satan?24 “If a kingdom is divided againstitself, that kingdom cannot stand.25 “And if a house is dividedagainst itself, that house cannotstand.26 “And if Satan has risen upagainst himself, and is divided, hecannot stand, but has an end.27 a“No one can enter a strongman’s house and plunder his goods,unless he first binds the strong man.And then he will plunder his house.

The Unpardonable Sin

28 a“Assuredly, I say to you, all sinswill be forgiven the sons of men,and whatever blasphemies theymay utter;29 “but he who blasphemes againstthe Holy Spirit never has forgive-ness, but is subject to eternal con-demnation”—30 because they asaid, “He has anunclean spirit.”

Jesus’Mother and Brothers Send for Him

31 aThen His brothers and Hismother came, and standing outsidethey sent to Him, calling Him.32 And a multitude was sittingaround Him; and they said to Him,“Look,Your mother and Your broth-ers 1are outside seeking You.”33 But He answered them, saying,“Who is My mother, or My broth-ers?”34 And He looked around in a cir-cle at those who sat about Him, andsaid, “Here are My mother and Mybrothers!35 “For whoever does the awill ofGod is My brother and My sisterand mother.”

The Parable of the Sower

4 And aagain He began to teach by the sea. And a great multi-

Light Under a Basket

21 aAlso He said to them, “Is a lampbrought to be put under a basket or

under a bed? Wind and Wave Obey Jesus

A Demon-Possessed Man Healed

5 Then athey came to the other side of the sea, to the country of

the 1Gadarenes.2 And when He had come out ofthe boat, immediately there metHim out of the tombs a man with anaunclean spirit,3 who had his dwelling among thetombs; and no one could bind 1him,not even with chains,4 because he had often been boundwith shackles and chains. And thechains had been pulled apart by him,and the shackles broken in pieces;neither could anyone tame him.5 And always, night and day, hewas in the mountains and in thetombs, crying out and cutting him-self with stones.6 When he saw Jesus from afar,he ran and worshiped Him.7 And he cried out with a loudvoice and said, “What have I to dowith You, Jesus, Son of the MostHigh God? I aimplore1 You by Godthat You do not torment me.”8 For He said to him, a“Come outof the man, unclean spirit!”9 Then He asked him, “What isyour name?” And he answered, say-ing, “My name is Legion; for we aremany.”10 Also he begged Him earnestlythat He would not send them out ofthe country.11 Now a large herd of aswine wasfeeding there near the mountains.12 So all the demons begged Him,saying, “Send us to the swine, thatwe may enter them.”13 And 1at once Jesus gave thempermission. Then the unclean spiritswent out and entered the swine(there were about two thousand);and the herd ran violently down thesteep place into the sea, anddrowned in the sea.14 So those who fed the swine fled,and they told it in the city and in thecountry. And they went out to seewhat it was that had happened.15 Then they came to Jesus, andsaw the one who had been ademon-possessed and had the legion, bsit-ting and cclothed and in his rightmind. And they were afraid.16 And those who saw it told themhow it happened to him who hadbeen demon-possessed, and aboutthe swine.17 Then athey began to plead withHim to depart from their region.

18 And when He got into the boat,ahe who had been demon-possessedbegged Him that he might be withHim.19 However, Jesus did not permithim, but said to him, “Go home toyour friends, and tell them whatgreat things the Lord has done foryou, and how He has had compas-sion on you.”20 And he departed and began toaproclaim in 1Decapolis all thatJesus had done for him; and allbmarveled.

A Girl Restored to Life and aWoman Healed

21 aNow when Jesus had crossedover again by boat to the other side,a great multitude gathered to Him;and He was by the sea.22 aAnd behold, one of the rulers ofthe synagogue came, Jairus byname. And when he saw Him, he fellat His feet23 and begged Him earnestly, say-ing, “My little daughter lies at thepoint of death. Come and alay Yourhands on her, that she may behealed, and she will live.”24 So Jesus went with him, and agreat multitude followed Him andthronged Him.25 Now a certain woman ahad aflow of blood for twelve years,26 and had suffered many thingsfrom many physicians. She hadspent all that she had and was nobetter, but rather grew worse.27 When she heard about Jesus,she came behind Him in the crowdand atouched His garment.28 For she said, “If only I may touchHis clothes, I shall be made well.”29 Immediately the fountain of herblood was dried up, and she felt inher body that she was healed of the1affliction.30 And Jesus, immediately know-ing in Himself that apower had goneout of Him, turned around in thecrowd and said, “Who touched Myclothes?”31 But His disciples said to Him,“You see the multitude thronging You,and You say, ‘Who touched Me?’ ”32 And He looked around to seeher who had done this thing.33 But the woman, afearing andtrembling, knowing what had hap-pened to her, came and fell downbefore Him and told Him the wholetruth.34 And He said to her, “Daughter,ayour faith has made you well. bGoin peace, and be healed of youraffliction.”35 aWhile He was still speaking,some came from the ruler of thesynagogue’s house who said, “Yourdaughter is dead. Why trouble theTeacher any further?”36 As soon as Jesus heard the word

that was spoken, He said to the rulerof the synagogue, “Do not be afraid;only abelieve.”37 And He permitted no one to fol-low Him except Peter, James, andJohn the brother of James.38 Then He came to the house ofthe ruler of the synagogue, and saw1a tumult and those who awept andwailed loudly.39 When He came in, He said tothem, “Why make this commotionand weep? The child is not dead, butasleeping.”40 And they ridiculed Him. aButwhen He had put them all outside,He took the father and the motherof the child, and those who werewith Him, and entered where thechild was lying.41 Then He took the child by thehand, and said to her, “Talitha,cumi,” which is translated, “Littlegirl, I say to you, arise.”42 Immediately the girl arose andwalked, for she was twelve years ofage. And they were aovercome withgreat amazement.43 But aHe commanded themstrictly that no one should know it,and said that something should begiven her to eat.

Jesus Rejected at Nazareth

6 Then aHe went out from there and came to His own country,

and His disciples followed Him.2 And when the Sabbath hadcome, He began to teach in the syn-agogue. And many hearing Himwere aastonished, saying, b“Wheredid this Man get these things? Andwhat wisdom is this which is givento Him, that such mighty works areperformed by His hands!3 “Is this not the carpenter, theSon of Mary, and abrother of James,Joses, Judas, and Simon? And arenot His sisters here with us?” Sothey bwere offended at Him.4 But Jesus said to them, a“Aprophet is not without honor exceptin his own country, among his ownrelatives, and in his own house.”5 aNow He could do no mightywork there, except that He laid Hishands on a few sick people andhealed them.6 And aHe marveled because oftheir unbelief. bThen He went aboutthe villages in a circuit, teaching.

Sending Out the Twelve

7 aAnd He called the twelve toHimself, and began to send themout btwo by two, and gave thempower over unclean spirits.8 He commanded them to takenothing for the journey except astaff—no bag, no bread, no copperin their money belts—9 but ato wear sandals, and not toput on two tunics.

10 aAlso He said to them, “In what-ever place you enter a house, staythere till you depart from that place.11 a“And 1whoever will not receiveyou nor hear you, when you departfrom there, bshake off the dustunder your feet as a testimonyagainst them. 2Assuredly, I say toyou, it will be more tolerable forSodom and Gomorrah in the day ofjudgment than for that city!”12 So they went out and preachedthat people should repent.13 And they cast out many demons,aand anointed with oil many whowere sick, and healed them.

John the Baptist Beheaded

14 aNow King Herod heard of Him,for His name had become wellknown. And he said, “John the Bap-tist is risen from the dead, andtherefore bthese powers are at workin him.”15 aOthers said, “It is Elijah.” Andothers said, “It is 1the Prophet, borlike one of the prophets.”16 aBut when Herod heard, he said,“This is John, whom I beheaded; hehas been raised from the dead!”17 For Herod himself had sent andlaid hold of John, and bound him inprison for the sake of Herodias, hisbrother Philip’s wife; for he hadmarried her.18 Because John had said toHerod, a“It is not lawful for you tohave your brother’s wife.”19 Therefore Herodias 1held itagainst him and wanted to kill him,but she could not;20 for Herod afeared John, know-ing that he was a just and holy man,and he protected him. Feeding the Five Thousand

30 aThen the apostles gathered toJesus and told Him all things, bothwhat they had done and what theyhad taught.31 aAnd He said to them, “Comeaside by yourselves to a desertedplace and rest a while.” For btherewere many coming and going, andthey did not even have time to eat.32 aSo they departed to a desertedplace in the boat by themselves.33 But 1the multitudes saw themdeparting, and many aknew Him andran there on foot from all the cities.They arrived before them and cametogether to Him.34 aAnd Jesus, when He came out,saw a great multitude and wasmoved with compassion for them,because they were like bsheep nothaving a shepherd. Go andsee.” And when they found out theysaid, a“Five, and two fish.”39 Then He acommanded them tomake them all sit down in groups onthe green grass.40 So they sat down in ranks, inhundreds and in fifties.41 And when He had taken the fiveloaves and the two fish, He alookedup to heaven, bblessed and broke theloaves, and gave them to His disci-ples to set before them; and the twofish He divided among them all.42 So they all ate and were filled.43 And they took up twelve basketsfull of fragments and of the fish.44 Now those who had eaten theloaves were 1about five thousandmen.

Jesus Walks on the Sea

45 aImmediately He 1made His dis-ciples get into the boat and gobefore Him to the other side, toBethsaida, while He sent the multi-tude away.

46 And when He had sent themaway, He adeparted to the mountainto pray.47 Now when evening came, theboat was in the middle of the sea;and He was alone on the land.48 Then He saw them straining atrowing, for the wind was againstthem. Now about the fourth watchof the night He came to them, walk-ing on the sea, and awould havepassed them by.49 And when they saw Him walk-ing on the sea, they supposed it wasa aghost, and cried out;50 for they all saw Him and weretroubled. But immediately He talkedwith them and said to them, a“Be1 ofgood cheer! It is I; do not be bafraid.”51 Then He went up into the boatto them, and the wind aceased. Many Touch Him and Are Made Well

53 aWhen they had crossed over,they came to the land of Gennesaretand anchored there.54 And when they came out of theboat, immediately 1the people rec-ognized Him,55 ran through that whole sur-rounding region, and began to carryabout on beds those who were sickto wherever they heard He was.56 Wherever He entered, into vil-lages, cities, or the country, they laidthe sick in the marketplaces, andbegged Him that athey might justtouch the bhem of His garment. Andas many as touched Him were madewell.

Defilement Comes from Within

7 Then athe Pharisees and some of the scribes came together to

Him, having come from Jerusalem.2 Now 1when they saw some ofHis disciples eat bread with defiled,that is, with aunwashed hands, 2theyfound fault.3 For the Pharisees and all theJews do not eat unless they washtheir hands 1in a special way, hold-ing the atradition of the elders.4 When they come from the mar-ketplace, they do not eat unless theywash. And there are many otherthings which they have received andhold, like the washing of cups, pitch-ers, copper vessels, and couches.5 aThen the Pharisees and scribesasked Him, “Why do Your disciplesnot walk according to the traditionof the elders, but eat bread withunwashed hands?”6 He answered and said to them,

daughter had an unclean spiritheard about Him, and she came andafell at His feet.26 The woman was a 1Greek, a2Syro-Phoenician by birth, and shekept 3asking Him to cast the demonout of her daughter.27 But Jesus said to her, “Let thechildren be filled first, for it is notgood to take the children’s breadand throw it to the little dogs.”28 And she answered and said toHim, “Yes, Lord, yet even the littledogs under the table eat from thechildren’s crumbs.”29 Then He said to her, “For thissaying go your way; the demon hasgone out of your daughter.”30 And when she had come to herhouse, she found the demon gone out,and her daughter lying on the bed.

Jesus Heals a Deaf-Mute

The Fig Tree Withered

12 aNow the next day, when theyhad come out from Bethany, He washungry.13 aAnd seeing from afar a fig treehaving leaves, He went to see if per-haps He would find something on it.When He came to it, He found noth-ing but leaves, for it was not the sea-son for figs.14 In response Jesus said to it, “Let

no one eat fruit from you everagain.” And His disciples heard it.

Jesus Cleanses the Temple

15 aSo they came to Jerusalem.Then Jesus went into the temple andbegan to drive out those whobought and sold in the temple, andoverturned the tables of the moneychangers and the seats of those whosold bdoves.16 And He would not allow anyoneto carry wares through the temple.17 Then He taught, saying to them,“Is it not written, a‘My house shallbe called a house of prayer for allnations’ ? The Lesson of the Withered FigTree

20 aNow in the morning, as theypassed by, they saw the fig treedried up from the roots.21 And Peter, remembering, said toHim, “Rabbi, look! 53 aAnd they led Jesus away to thehigh priest; and with him werebassembled all the cchief priests, theelders, and the scribes.54 But aPeter followed Him at a dis-tance, right into the courtyard of thehigh priest. And he sat with the ser-vants and warmed himself at the fire.55 aNow the chief priests and all thecouncil sought testimony againstJesus to put Him to death, but foundnone.56 For many bore afalse witnessagainst Him, but their testimonies1did not agree.57 aThen some rose up and borefalse witness against Him, saying,58 “We heard Him say, a‘I willdestroy this temple made withhands, and within three days I willbuild another made without hands.’ ”59 But not even then did their testi-mony agree.60 aAnd the high priest stood up inthe midst and asked Jesus, saying,“Do You answer nothing? Peter Denies Jesus, and Weeps

66 aNow as Peter was below in thecourtyard, one of the servant girls ofthe high priest came.67 And when she saw Peter warm-ing himself, she looked at him and

said, “You also were with aJesus ofNazareth.”68 But he denied it, saying, “I nei-ther know nor understand what youare saying.” And he went out on theporch, and a rooster crowed.69 aAnd the servant girl saw himagain, and began to say to thosewho stood by, “This is one of them.”70 But he denied it again. aAnd alittle later those who stood by saidto Peter again, “Surely you are oneof them; bfor you are a Galilean,1and your 2speech shows it.”71 Then he began to curse andswear, “I do not know this Man ofwhom you speak!”72 aA second time the roostercrowed. Then Peter called to mindthe word that Jesus had said to him,“Before the rooster crows twice, youwill deny Me three times.” Andwhen he thought about it, he wept.

Jesus Faces Pilate

15 Immediately, ain the morning,the chief priests held a con-

sultation with the elders and scribesand the whole council; and theybound Jesus, led Him away, and bde-livered Him to Pilate.2 aThen Pilate asked Him, “AreYou the King of the Jews?” Heanswered and said to him, “It is asyou say.”3 And the chief priests accusedHim of many things, but He aan-swered nothing.4 aThen Pilate asked Him again,saying, “Do You answer nothing?See how many things 1they testifyagainst You!”5 aBut Jesus still answered noth-ing, so that Pilate marveled.

Jesus Dies on the Cross

Jesus Buried in Joseph’s Tomb

42 aNow when evening had come,because it was the Preparation Day,that is, the day before the Sabbath,43 Joseph of Arimathea, a promi-nent council member, who awashimself waiting for the kingdom ofGod, coming and taking courage,went in to Pilate and asked for thebody of Jesus.44 Pilate marveled that He wasalready dead; and summoning thecenturion, he asked him if He hadbeen dead for some time.45 So when he found out from thecenturion, ahe granted the body toJoseph.46 aThen he bought fine linen, tookHim down, and wrapped Him in thelinen.
