The Hockey Net

The Function

The function of the hockey net is to catch pucks that enter the net and to protect pucks from entering the back of the net. It is used in the game of hockey.

Major Materials

The major materials in hockey nets are steel tubes and twine that is made of nylon. Also when the nets are on the ice and heavy pegs are used to keep the net anchored to the ice.

Why they use this

They use steel tubes because of the ability to sustain damage from rubber pucks at high velocity so that the posts wont dent or be damaged if a shot bangs of the steel. Also steel is impact resistant. Also they use nylon twine because it wont rip easily if hit with a high powered shot. Nylon can sustain high weight and wont rip until it reaches that weight and it is in the family with synthetic polymers. Lastly they use the pegs to anchor the net down to the ice so its not sliding around during the games on the ice.

Brief History

Hockey nets are 72 inches wide by 48 inches tall and the inside of the goal is 44 inches deep. A goal is made of steel tubes painted red. It has two vertical posts and one horizontal crossbar. It has a small rounded bar at the bottom similar to another rounded bar at the top. The hockey net has been used in the game for the games entire history.
