Central Street, in the Block owned by Dr. Miller. The Hansons lived in the only downstairs apartment with an entrance on

Central Street. (1938-1958) Max Stewart had his radio and television shop next door to the Hanson’s. The Hansons had a nasty little dog that used to be hitched to their back porch railing. Haverhill-Bath Covered Bridge …2008 … Restoration is completed on the Bath-Haverhill covered bridge. In

1827 it was mutually decided, between the towns of Bath and Haverhill, to construct a bridge that would span the Ammonoosuc River, just above the point where it ends by emptying into the Connecticut River. The bridge was completed in 1829.

The bridge is of the Town lattice truss design with arches. It is a salt box type and considered to be the oldest covered bridge of this type in the United States.

The original cost was approx. $2400.00 and it was divided between the two towns. The bridge is 256'3" long and has two spans of 104'0"; and 120'9". It has an overall width of 26'8", a roadway width of 14'2", and a maximum vertical clearance of 10'11". There is a sidewalk on the north side of the structure.

The bridge was built by Luther Butler and it is said it was built on land and pulled across on skids. Butler was an accomplished stone mason with 179 years

On June 19th, 2009, the kiosk was installed. It was donated by HHC to the Railroad Park. The Kiosk was built by Tom Mayo and is a very well built structure that will contain information about the park, it’s activities and history, as well as future plans. Unfortunately the installation had a bit of a problem when the auger hit the power line to the stage.

But, with perseverance, the structure rose and will be a nice welcome to everyone visiting the park, in the future. Unfortunately a concert was planned for that evening. The Strawberry Farm Band, quickly adjusted to having no electricity, and an acoustical concert was enjoyed by all who attended.

Long time commission member Shirley Page Cobb resigned after serving many years on Haverhill Heritage Commission. Her knowledge and attention to detail was greatly appreciated.

Haverhill Heritage is also involved in other historical preservations and the commissions minutes are available to the public at:

(Bob) Hill is a sub mail carrier and tax collector. The Hills’ and daughter Lynn, reside at 20 Pine Street. (1956-1958)

*** William H. Hill built a marble and granite shop beside the graded school, between 1880 when his Wells River facility burned, and 1884. This is quite likely the house still standing, on the bank, to the west side of where the school was. North-west of the Methodist church, known as the Fillian house. Hill had been in business in Woodsville prior to 1884, but had moved to Wells River and then back to Woodsville in 1884, building this building. Mr. Hill also had a marble facility in Plymouth, NH.Hill employed 3-4 workers and produced cemetery markers, ornate building moldings and trims, as well as sidewalk curbings.

In 1896 the elementary school was becoming crowded so an outside stairway was added to the Hill house and the upstairs was used for students. This was when the school was a wooden structure, which was replaced with a brick and stone building in 1899-1900. The new building burned in 1960 and the corner date marked was missing for 50 years until it was found by Rollie Moore, in the Hancock creek. Plans are under way to have the marker placed in the new “Railroad Park”.

Another story I was told was from a lady at the legion, where I visited one afternoon. She said if the girls in town didn’t have a way to get to the dance in Haverhill they would come to our house and Chief Hobbs would take them to the dance. (He would police the dances.)

After the dance he would deliver them home; waiting at each home until the girl was inside, before going to the next!
