Introduction.

• Measurements of the lifetime of the muon, coupled withmeasurements of the muon flux as function of altitude,confirmed the predictions of the theory of relativity.

• The connection between the muon lifetime and the theory ofrelativity makes the muon lifetime experiment an excitingexperiment for the advanced laboratory.

• The techniques used to determine the lifetime of the muonhave changed over time and will be discussed in this talk.

• The muon lifetime experiment can be improved significantlyby using digital signal processing techniques.

• These improvements not only enhance the advancedlaboratory experiment, but also allow us to share the data inreal time with the general public.

Obtaining the muon lifetime by studying theanomalous absorption of muons in air.

• The original muon lifetime wasmeasured by Rossi and Hall bycomparing the muon absorption of airand dense absorbers (with equivalentstopping powers).

• The previously observed anomalousstopping of muons in air was assumedto be due to the decay of muons.

• Based on carefully measured muonrates at different altitudes, with andwithout absorbers, Rossi and Hallobtained a lifetime of 2.4 ± 0.3 µs.

Muon-decay experiments in the advancedlaboratory.

• The processing of photographs todetermine the lifetime of themuon was rather cumbersome.

• The development of TACs orTDCs made it possible to collectdata over extended periods oftime, but sacrificed the detailedinformation about the pulseshapes contained in thephotographs.

• Despite these draw backs, theTAC/TDC-based measurementtechnique currently dominates theapproach used in the advancedlaboratory. AJP: 38, 1196 (1970)

Summary.• The first direct measurements of the

muon lifetime used photographs tocapture the waveforms produced bythe stopped muons.

• The current generation of muonexperiments used in the advancedlaboratory only preserve the timecorrelation between the stopping andthe decay pulse.

• The future generation of muonexperiments use DSP to capture thefull information contained in thewaveform of a stopping muon.

• The DSP information is accessible toeveryone, everywhere.
