The rivalry between Dallas and
Washington reaches back to 1960
when the Cowboys were being
considered for induction into the
NFL.
The owner of the
Redskins, George
Preston Marshall,
strongly opposed the
NFL expansion. The
Redskins had enjoyed
being the only NFL
team to represent the
American South for
three decades. The
Cowboys expansion
threatened that
monopoly.

In a savvy legal
move, the owners of
the Cowboys bought
the rights to the
Redskins fight song,
“Hail to the
Redskins.” Then
they threatened
Marshall — they
would refuse to allow
him to use the song
at future games
unless he went along
with the expansion.

That 1960 confrontation was the start of a thriving
rivalry that has continued to this day. By the
1970s, that rivalry hit its stride and set the tone for
one of the greatest sports rivalries in history.
