What is a CD?• Compact disc (CD) is a digital optical disc data storage format.

The format was originally developed to store and play back sounds recordings only. But later it was adapted for storage of data. Audio CDs and audio CD players have been commercially available since October 1982.

Who invented the CD?• The Compact Disc (CD) was invented by James Russel in 1995.

James Russell was granted a total of 22 patents for various elements of his compact disk system. However, the compact disk did not become popular until it was mass manufactured by Philips in 1980.

What are the uses of the CD?• The CD is used to play back sounds recording, also it was

invented to save data and information, later the CD was modified to play videos and save archives and texts, other formats were further derived from these as rewritable media (CD-RW), Video Compact Disc (VCD), Super Video Compact Disc (SVCD), Photo CD, PictureCD, CD-i, and Enhanced Music CD.

When the CD was launched to market?• The CD was produced by 2 large companies, Philips and Sony.

Sony and Philips create a joint task force of engineers to design a new digital audio disc, It was in October 1982 when Sony and Philips began to market the CD. Philips contributed the general manufacturing process, based on video LaserDisc technology.
