Where It All Began…

• 3,000 B.C.- Egyptians bake the first Leavened (raised) bread

• 1,500 B.C.-Peanuts Discovered, a legume. By the Incas to give as food for the afterlife

• 150 B.C.- Bread Bakers get organized. By the Romans. They wanted a more sophisticated expensive white bread

• 14 A.D.- First known Recipe Book, by Roman Marcus Gavious Apicius in first century. Had recipes for fruit preserves.

Where It All Began…

• 1600- Jelly comes to America. Europeans kind of paved the way with preserved fruits with molasses or maple sugar

• 1762-1763, the first sandwich, by the 4th Earl of sandwich who went from pub to pub and gambled. Had two pieces of bread with meat in between to snack on

• 1890- Peanut Butter invented, by a physician to help to ease the digestion for patients.

• 1897- the J.M. Smucker company founded

Where It All Began…• 1900- soft white bread introduced

• 1903- George Washington Carver, Father of peanut industry. Had new was to use it and preserve it

• 1940’s- the PB&J sandwich become popular. They were real big for the military. It was known that Peanut Butter and Jell y was part of the military rations in WWII

Peanut Butter

• In 1958 Jif Peanut Butter was introduced by Proctor and Gamble in Lexington Kentucky.

• 1993- The worlds largest peanut butter and jelly sandwich was introduced. It measured almost 40 feet long and weighed 200lbs.
