The Beginning The invention of the world’s first computer

is credited to Konrad Zuse (1936) – called the Z1 Computer

The Z1 was the worlds first freely programmable computer.

Along the way The next computer along the way was

called the ABC computer. 1942. This computer was mostly used for

business purposes. Was invented by John Atanasoff & Clifford Berry

Along the way (cont.) Two years later, a new computer was

already out. It was called the Harvard Mark 1 Computer. It was developed by Howard Aiken & Grace Hopper. 1944.

Page 5: The History of computers

Along the way (cont.) One of the first, and very important,

computers was the ENIAC 1 computer. Developed in 1946 by John Presper Eckert & John W. Mauchly.

Along the way (cont.) Yet again two years later another computer

was already out and ready. It was called the “Baby” computer. The names of its developers were Frederic Williams & Tom Kilburn. 1948.

Along the way (cont.) Another important advance in technology

would be the transistor, although it’s not a computer it greatly affected them. It allowed computers to divert power to separate parts of the computer so they could do several things at once, or quickly switch to another function.

Coming along… The very first commercial computer was

developed in 1951 and was called the UNIVAC Computer.

Coming along… even further In 1953 the very first IBM computer came

out for businesses to use. It was called the IBM 701 EDPM Computer.

Developing new programming languages

FORTRAN is developed in 1954. FORTRAN is the first successful high level programming language. It allowed programmers to make more complex applications for computers.

Integrated Circuit The integrated circuit was really important

to the evolution of the computer. The integrated circuit was able to replace vacuum tubes on computers, allowing them to be made smaller and more convenient.

Page 13: The History of computers

Internet In 1969 the first internet was developed. It

was called ARPAnet.

Page 14: The History of computers

RAM In 1970 the first dynamic RAM chip became

available.

Computers get even smaller In 1971 the very first microprocessor was

invented. This allowed all of the necessary components in a computer to be stored in a compact form. Allowing designers to be able to make computers smaller than they ever could.

Home Computers Finally, in 1974 and 1975, the very first

consumer computers came out. Scelbi & Mark-8 Altair & IBM 5100 Computers.

DOS In 1981 MS-DOS came out. DOS was a

new operating system for computers.

Page 18: The History of computers

GUI A really important advancement in

computer technology was the development of GUI’s. A GUI is a graphical user interface. The first computer to come out with it is the Apple Lisa.

Coming to a close In 1985 Microsoft begins to compete with

Apple. Eventually their competition led to better and better computers, all the way up to the current computers we use now.
