1790s Frenchman nicolas appert pioneered
the process oF Food canningThe process of canning was pioneered in the 1790s when a French
confectioner, Nicolas Appert, discovered that the application of heat to food
in sealed glass bottles preserved the food from deterioration.
In abot 1806 Appert's principles were sccessfll trialed b the French Nav
on a wide range of foods inclding meat, vegetables, frit and even milk.

Based on Appert's methods of food preservation the packaging of food in
sealed airtight tin-plated wroght-iron cans was first patented b anEnglishman, Peter Drand, in 1810.
Parr's tin of roasted veal contained instrctions to open the can -
“Ct rond on the top near to the oter edge with a chisel and hammer”.*
It was said a good worker cold prodce for cans in one da.
Cans are now manfactred at arond 400 per minte.

Canned foods were greatl favored b earl explorers. Beginning in 1814
canned foods were sent to distant British colonies.
1840s canning commences in australia
Sizar Elliot was the first food canner in Astralia. In 1846 he opened a small
canning factor in Sdne's Charlotte Place, now known as Grosvenor Street.
B 1869, manfactrers in Qeensland were exporting over one million
kilograms of canned meat each ear. In Victoria, arond Shepparton,
SPC prodced 430,000 cans of frit in 1917 and in 1925 Ardmona's
first ear of canning prodced nearl 3 million cans of frit.
Edgell & Sons first began canning asparags in 1926 at Bathrst and Heinz
& Compan began prodcing baked beans in tomato sace at Richmond,
Victoria on October 1, 1935.

Dring World War II the Astralian canned food indstr expanded rapidl
and new prodcts, sch as califlower, brssels sprots and whole tomatoes
were canned. B 1957 Astralia had its own tinplate manfactring plant.
Toda some 30 canning companies operate throghot Astralia and prodce
over 1000 different tpes of canned foods for the Astralian market and for
export. The estimated retail vale is arond one billion dollars each ear.
