“Chautauqua is the mostAmerican thing in America”

President Theodore Roosevelt

That’s according to one of America’s great presidents. Now, you’ll hearfrom one of America’s favorite first ladies, Rosalynn Carter, right here inhistoric DeFuniak Springs as to why she considers Chautauqua soimportant that she wants to see this powerful event fully revived in herbeloved hometown of Plains, Georgia. President Roosevelt (interpretedby Joe Wiegand) will be here, too!

Why is DeFuniak Springs, Florida so special? Because it is the home ofthe original campus of the Florida Chautauqua which is celebrated by

thousands of tourists who converge here annually for the revived Chautauqua Assembly. Many just want to walkin the footsteps of such past powerful speakers as Vice President Thomas Marshal, William Jennings Bryan, andGovernor William McKinley of Ohio who would later become President of the United States. Some just want toadmire the beautiful Victorian homes, a wooden building that resembles the U.S. Capitol, the 124 years-old traindepot, and the charming library that dates back to the days of the original Florida Chautauqua.

Some, like you, just want to experience Chautauqua by purchasing a book of tickets (Passport) to attend theentire Florida Chautauqua Assembly event. Put your laptop down, shut your cell phone off, and experience howoriginal Chautauquans (1874-1930) educated themselves through armchairdiscussions with some of the foremost headline speakers of the times. Go towhatever breakout session you want and talk with authors, prominent lecturers, andleaders of other Chautauquas throughout North America. This year, you can enjoy asession of poetry reading in a historic cottage complete with a glass or two of ourregion’s most coveted wine from the Chautauqua Winery. Then conclude your daywith an enjoyable celebration of a performance and a meal prepared by "The BravesBistro," the culinary art classes of Walton County High School.

Welcome decedents of The Hon. Wallace Bruce, the longest servingpresident of the Florida Chautauqua who was also our U.S. Consul toEdinburgh, Scotland! This is the first Florida Chautauqua Assembly thefamily has attended since it has been revived.
