A Workshop with Stephen Gilligan, Ph.D. This workshop explores how each person’s life can be lived as a great journey of consciousness. In this hero’s journey, even the problems and inevitable setbacks are opportunities for further creative growth. This workshop explores the structure of this journey, including (1) hearing the “call”, (2) crossing thresholds of commitment, (3) finding guardians, (4) transforming “demons”, (5) completing the journey, and (6) bringing the gifts back to the community. A major focus will be on how to develop the creative state of consciousness needed to succeed on the journey. You will discover how to help yourself and others enter into the generative state of disciplined flow, a paradoxical process where one is positively structured yet remains perfectly free to move in any way or direction. The “discipline” involves developing and maintaining positive relations to (1) the future, (2) one’s inner “center” (3) helpful resources, and (4) the many problems/obstacles that arise on the journey. The “flow” involves how to then open beyond all these content areas, and allow a creative consciousness to emerge. This is the way of extraordinary performers, who train rigorously but always trust “something beyond” to guide them. The workshop is highly practical and experiential. A general framework will be developed, specifying both how problems develop and how generative solutions may emerge. Demonstrations, exercises, and examples will detail how the work can be applied. Some of the topics covered include: How to map out a person’s “hero’s journey” How to develop and maintain the creative state of “disciplined flow” to successfully navigate the hero’s journey; Skillfully working with the Three Minds of Generative Self: Somatic, Cognitive, and Field. The creative artistry of “generative trance”: how it differs from traditional “trance”, and how it supports creativity How to use “disciplined flow” states to transform problems, heal wounds, and create new futures How to ensure the new patterns are integrated into real life situations.
