NEWS from 1st Vice Presidents (Programs)

March class: We had a great turnout for ‘Mystery Paint In’ taking us to Paris. Great camaraderie and a wonderful way to say ‘thank you’ to our members by a committee who put in long hours throughout the year to make it such a successful day. Sandy Garcia (chairwoman and teacher) taught us a fun project and her volunteers who waited on us hand and foot made the day fun and exciting. We were privy to work on an unpublished de-sign that everyone enjoyed painting. Oodles of raffles and free giveaways that included a gift bag, lapel pin, table décor, chalk pencil and picture frames. Breakfast, lunch and dessert were served to the members. Pro-grams displayed many of the upcoming projects for 2019 so the members could view the projects up close for sign ups and decide what surfaces they can use. 2019 membership lists, and program guides were hand-ed out. All will be available at future paint in’s if you didn’t pick yours up.

NEWS from 1st Vice Presidents (Programs) — continued April 13th Class: A Bit of Aloha Hibiscus The first class of our new calendar starts us out with this beautiful flower being taught by Lori Hillstead. This is a very elegant piece with gold leaf edging and can be painted on any surface. Lori displays it on an 11 ½ - inch square plate. What a nice piece to display at home or give away as a gift. Paints used are Deco Art. Patterns available

May 11th class: Sea Horse Rides

Bobbie is teaching an exciting underwater picture “Sea Horse Rides”. This is a class that gives us an oppor-tunity to learn color theory and painting techniques. I love all the little creatures in this picture and who knows how to paint a sea horse? Pick the surface of your choice for this piece. Paints used are Jo Sonja. We offer many sizes of the design patterns depending on your plate size. Patterns available

June 8th class: Os Pencil Box Onya will give us a chance to work on our Os Rosemaling skills with this flower pencil box. The flowers and leaves look complicated to paint but Onya guides us step by step layer after layer to make them look fabulous. This is such a col-orful box, you will want to add it to your home office décor. Paints used are Jo Sonja and Background colors. Patterns available

Remembering Neva Anderson

Often times we fail to recognize how much we will miss someone until after they are gone. That is the case with our beloved Neva Anderson. Neva be-longed to three southern California chapters, and devoted her time to all of them. She was so giving of her time, whether it was on a committee, driving members to Paint-ins if they were unable to, or just smiling as she moved through her day.

As with many people, Neva had just retired a couple of years ago and hit the ground running. She was always involved in many activities while working, but now she could really let loose! Her commitment to family and friends was leg-endary in our community, she seldom said no to a challenge, thus pulling every-one along with her.

As long as we remember, Neva will be alive in our hearts. Let your light shine in Heaven, Neva.

Mystery Paint-In 2019 Sandy Garcia was the Mystery

Teacher for our 2019 Mystery Paint

-In. The project was a lot of fun

and almost all of us finished and

were given a beautiful frame to

complete it. At the request of the

designer, we are not going to pub-

lish her/his name or an unblurred

photo of the project. So, for many

of you who couldn’t make it, it is

STILL a little bit of a mystery!!

People born in April are either an Aries or a Taurus. Aries celebrate their birthday between April 1 and April 19, while anyone born between April 20 and April 30 is a Taurus. Aries are typically seen as ambitious leaders, while Taurus’s are often go-getters who also take time to enjoy the luxuries of life. Most people who have their birthdays in April are very independent. They venture out and are go-getters, often leading the way. Their upbeat and magnetic personality often entices others to follow their lead because their personalities bring excitement into others’ lives. They prefer to make their own money and work hard to have anything they want or need in life. People born in April are born leaders that know how to take charge. They are sensitive. They follow their heart but take their brain along with them! They aren’t afraid to take bold chances and love to travel. They love to look for information. They can be impatient and don’t like to be kept waiting. Friendships mean a lot to them. They are reliable and the ones that you want to have around when the world feels like it’s falling apart. April born people are honest and good for their word. April born individuals are the funniest! They are a BLAST to hang out with. They always have something good to say. They will help you see the brighter side when the going gets tough.

Linda Howard shares her April Fools Day birthday with Debbie Reynolds and Susan Boyle (Britain’s Got Talent show winner).

Mary Weflen shares her April 7 birthday with Jackie Chan, Russell Crowe, James Garner, Francis Ford Coppola and Jerry Brown (34th and 39th Governor of California).

Anita Lane shares her April 12 birthday with Claire Danes, Tom Clancy and David Letterman.

Karen Ortman shares her April 17 birthday with Jennifer Garner, J.P. Morgan and William Holden.

Rama Shotwell shares her April 27 birthday with Ulysses S. Grant, Frank Abagnale, Coretta Scott King, and Jack Klugman.

Debi Stivers shares her April 28 birthday with Bridget Moynahan, Ann-Margaret and Jay Leno.

Jean Cooke shares her April 29 birthday with Michelle Pfeiffer, Willie Nelson, Uma Thurman and Jerry Seinfeld.

Some special and whacky days in April are National Peanut Butter and Jelly Day (2nd); National Dandelion Day (5th); California Poppy Day (6th); National Beer Day and No Housework Day (7th); Grilled Cheese Sandwich Day and Na-tional Licorice Day (12th); Palm Sunday (14th); That Sucks Day and World Art Day (15th); National Eggs Benedict Day (16th); Good Friday and Passover begins at sundown (19th); Husband Appreciation Day (20th); Easter Sunday (21st); Earth Day and National Jelly Bean Day (22nd); East Meets West Day and National Penguin Day (25th); National Prime Rib Day (27th); Kiss Your Mate Day (28th) and National Shrimp Scampi Day (29th). Did you know there are so many days that celebrate food?

The birthstone for April is the diamond. The flower for April is the daisy or sweet pea.

Significant things that happened in April are cigarette advertising banned in US (1970); Pony Express service starts (1860); 148 tornados hit North America from Georgia to Canada in 16 hours (1974); Martin Luther King Jr. murdered (1968); America enters World War I (1917); the World Health Organization (WHO) established (1948); Rogers and Hammerstein debut “South Pacific” on Broadway (1949); President Lyndon Johnson signed the Civil Rights Act (1968); Yuri Gargarin be-comes the first man in space (1961); Titanic strikes and iceberg and sinks on her maiden voyage (1912); Ford Motor Co. unveiled its first Mustang (1964); Grace Kelly weds Prince Rainier of Monaco (1956); Nelson Mandela voted as South Africa President (1994) and George Washington inaugurated as first President of the US (1789).

SDP News Remember to VOTE!!!

Not going to SDP Conference in Wichita? You can still vote for officers and any motions that may come up during the General Meeting Thursday, May 16. Last year at the Conference General Meeting the membership approved a motion that allows all members in good standing to “attend” meetings electronically.

Members will be sent an electronic link to the ballot using the e-mail address on file. If you receive e-mails from SDP regarding Conference and/or chapter chatter, you will receive the link at this same e-mail address. If your e-mail address has changed or you have opted out of SDP mailings, you must advise SDP immediately of the address you wish them to use. Because the most recent issue of the Decorative Painter is arriving later than usual, SDP is extending the end of March deadline to notify them of any changes in your e-mail address until mid-April. Beginning April 15, you will receive weekly updated from SDP regarding the links, electronic voting, the Facebook page, etc. The day of the Annual Meeting, 6:00* AM – 10 AM, you can sign in to the SDP: An Artful Connection Facebook page. You will be able to listen live to the candidates speeches and learn if there are nominations from the floor. Members will use the link to the electronic ballot to make selections. Once your selections are made, click the “DONE” but-ton to submit your ballot. There is a definite time frame for voting. ALL ballots (absentee, electronic, and at-tendee) will be counted by the Tellers Committee. The best way to strengthen SDP is to participate. If you can’t attend Conference, you can still take part is what is happening. Please VOTE The meeting will begin at 7:00 AM Pacific Time, but log in a little early to be sure you’re set.

San Diego County Fair 2019: OZsome!

It’s time to finish up your UFO’s and enter them into the competitive exhibits at this year’s Wiz-ard of Oz themed Fair. You can win ribbons, cash awards, impress your friends, and show the community what decorative painting is all about. The fair opens on May 31st and runs through July 4th. Here’s the scoop on what you need to know:

You must register each of your entries ONLINE only. The fee is $8.00 per entry. Two entries per class.

Registration is open now.

Go to www.sdfair.com/entry and follow the links to Competitive Entries, Home and Hobby, Decorative Arts & Crafts, and follow the prompts.

The deadline to register/enter your pieces online is Friday, May 10th!

The dates to deliver your pieces to the fairgrounds are Friday and Saturday, May 17 & 18th from 12:00 noon-7:00 p.m.

The date to pick up your entries after the Fair is over is July 7th.

If you need help talking you through the online registration process, call me (Charlotte at 760-739-9575) or the Fair entry office 858-792-4207.

We are working out a plan for a designated person to take projects down for chapter members. Look for an email blast with this info soon.

BEFORE YOU REGISTER: Look at the entry Divisions and Classes online for the best placement for your pieces. You will most likely want Tole & Decorative Painting (Division 3510). You can enter your piece to be judged under Classes such as: Blended, Folk Art, Furniture, Rosemaling/Stroke etc. There are also many new Classes in the Miscellaneous Crafts (Division 3508) includ-ing: Glass Painting that might be a good fit for your pieces.

Go. Do this. Participate. You are all awesome painters!

But wait…there’s more…

Would you like to help out with Make-it/Take-it’s at the Fair and promote Decorative Painting? PHP has a tentative date of Sun-

day, June 30th. Last year we were quite popular and swamped with adults & kids who wanted to paint on our little wooden boxes.

We will need at least 3 people for two shifts. This is a very active and fun adventure. More info to follow but please call or email me if you are interested. ([email protected]; Charlotte Hicks 760-739-9575).
