This December will be my last year serving as your President. Please know that while I am not seeking re-election, I plan to stay aware and be involved whenever needed. I have no doubt that the new leadership of the Foundation will bring an infusion of fresh ideas and continue the goals of the organization. Officers are chosen on a yearly basis so we encourage you to get involved. Self-nominations are welcome. Officer nominations can be emailed to me at [email protected]. We cannot do this alone, so please consider joining in the fun of running such a dynamic organization. With the help of the Board and our many volunteers, we’ve accomplished the goal of creating activities that promote our great city's culture and heritage. Our yearly calendar includes an antique festival, home tour, speakers at our quarterly meetings, a crawfish boil, and activities that we co-host with the city. A program dear to my heart is our historic home documentation and plaque program. The idea came to me when I realized how many of us lost all photos of our family homes during Katrina, and I didn't want this to happen to Covington. And finally, our latest venture, OX LOT'S WHIMSICAL HISTORY OF COVINGTON'S STORIED PAST! You can become a major contributor in this “toon-o-mentary” which brings Covington's captivating history to life in an entertaining fashion, in both video and book format! So don't miss our December meeting at the Southern Hotel where you'll find what it’s all about. You’re going to be proud to be part of this, I promise. In closing, I want to say how my interaction with you, our members, has been most enjoyable. I am, however, most grateful for the hard work of our Board and the City of Covington whose collaborative teamwork has made our programs possible. Ron Barthet introduces TammanyFamily.com

Ron Barthet, publisher, newspaper editor and reporter , photographer, and cartoonist, entertained a big turnout of CHF members and guests at our open meeting on Tuesday, September 13 at The Covington Trailhead. With a slideshow of items from his 45

years of files and more than 14,000 photographs and St. Tammany memorabilia, attendees were treated to a treasure trove of information plus some whimsical things — cartoons, pictorial maps, and imaginary posters from his weird sense of humor. NEWSLETTER Suzanne King

Mention the name Howard Nichols in the Florida Parishes, and everyone knows who you are talking about. His m a n y y e a r s o f d e d i c a t i o n a n d contributions to the history and preservation efforts in St. Tammany Parish and beyond were recognized recently at a special event.

On May 11, the Louisiana Trust for Historic Preservation honored Nichols as “Preservationist Extraordinaire” at their Three Rivers Soirée hosted by Joseph and Lisa Condrey Ward at their beautiful home on New Hampshire Street. CHF co-sponsored the event.

The Soirée was held in conjunction with the 37th annual Louisiana Preservation Conference which brought preservationists from all over Louisiana to the Southern Hotel.

Saints, Spirits & Sangria! (A members only event)

Yes, you read it right - Sangrias! Mark your calendar for Tuesday, N o v e m b e r 1 , A l l Saints Day at 6 pm, on the Farmers’ Market grounds across from the Old Covington Cemetery No. 1, 600 block of North Columbia Street. We’ve planned a lovely evening with Deborah Burst, freelance writer, photographer, and the author of several Louisiana-inspired books. Her first three books are Sacred Places, Hallowed Halls of Greater New Orleans, and Southern Fried and Sanctified, and in some of those books, Ms. Burst mentions Covington’s charm and features in great detail. Due out soon, her fourth book is Spirits of the Bayou: Sanctuaries, Cemeteries and Hauntings. Copies of all four books will be available for purchase that evening. Non-members may join online or at the event in order to attend. In case of rain, the location will move to Covington City Council Chambers, 222 Kirkland Street.

Junior CHF News CHF is happy to welcome our new Junior CHF leaders from Saint Scholastica Academy! President Abby Palopoli and Vice President Mary-Kate Murphy, pictured at left, will work closely with the CHF Board and Officers as our go-to volunteers for our remaining events this year and into 2017.
