Dear Friends,

WE HAVE NOW ENTERED A NEW SEASON in the church year called, Epiphany.Epiphany comes from the Greek word, epiphaneia meaning “appearance” or “manifestation”. The Feast of the Epiphany takes place on January 6thand the season continues until Ash Wednesday, the beginning of Lent onFebruary 17th.

In many European countries where Christmas tree decorations are replaced withsmall straw stars and lit stars are placed in the front window of individual homes,Epiphany is called The Season of Light. In the Eastern Church, Epiphany is some-times called The Season of Wonder. Whatever we call it, for the next 6 weeks, theSunday Scripture readings for Epiphany will reveal who the Christ Child is.

The symbols of Epiphany are the magi and the star of Bethlehem. The ancient 1stcentury manuscript called, The Gospel of Matthew explains that the magi left theirhome on a search. They were non-Jews inside a Jewish story. Matthew’s description of the Christ Child shatters religious tradition by bringing strangers into the spotlight. He says that throughout his whole life, this Christ Child will shatter all the oldboundaries of religion and race, social class, status and gender. And this Christ willcall everyone son, daughter, sister, brother and friend.

With no road map to a clear destination, the magi trusted in the light of a star givenby God who gave birth to a sacred love story which would make room for everyone.

The story of Epiphany fulfills the ancient prophesy of Isaiah who once said:

“Don’t look back – don’t look backDo not consider the things of old forI am about to do a new thing. So – arise and shine, for those who wait for the Lordshall renew their strength. They shall run and not be weary. They shall walk and not faint.”

As we step over the threshold into this new year, is it possible that the same may betrue for us – that God may be doing a new thing in our midst, and whatever thatmight be for us – we too shall arise and shine. We shall run and not be weary. Weshall walk together and we will not faint this Epiphany or ever.

Yours faithfully,

Judy Rois, Rector

LAST MONTH I JOINED THE THRONGS of people who went tosee the movie Avatar. While I had heard some mixed reviews(one critic saying it was simply an updated version of the1990 film, Dances With Wolves, starring Kevin Costner), I had a gut feeling I would enjoy it.

The critic in me could see a number of things that didn’t sit well – an awkward use of aboriginal-type characters andsome weird script writing. But there was an embedded spirituality that at times was awe inspiring and there was afantastic use of action and drama in a fantasy setting. Evenone of those elements would have been enough for me.

But what really drew me in the most was the core of the positive and negative reported hype I had heard; that it was,at times, a mediocre story supported by cutting edge andbold new technology. It was said that the producers neededto make at least $285 million dollars just to break even. Iguess they don’t have to worry about that anymore, now thatit has broken the 1 billion dollar barrier.

The venture into something new and untried was a hugegamble. Some of the technology was out there but was stillnot advanced enough to capture the vision of director JamesCameron or do it justice. Waiting and developing becamepart of the plan. In the end, this film has opened up a wholenew spectrum of possibilities for the film community.

Could it all have been done differently – sure it could have –but it probably wouldn’t have pushed an envelope that neededpushing, opening up a whole new level of possibility.

As we begin a new year and decade, I hope we discover thatwe can remain encouraged in the face of missteps, heartened by challenges that present themselves and that ourlives are enriched by the new and sometimes bold initiativesthat seem both possible and exciting.

CHRIST CHURCH DEER PARK JANUARY 2010

We begin the New Year with many opportunities and challenges. On February 7th we shall begin a limited timeexperiment with two Sunday morning services instead of thecurrent three. The return to two services, on a nine Sundaytrial basis, is a response to a number of factors including: theunanimous recommendation of the Worship Committee; thedesire by many to bring together what have become two separate congregations; financial considerations; decliningattendance; and the workload that three services can meanfor a reduced clergy. Remember that just two years ago wehad three ordained members of clergy who could celebrateCommunion. For financial reasons this was reduced to twoin 2007 and, following the departure of The Reverend GregCarpenter this year, will be reduced to one. In the normalcourse an incoming Curate may not be ordained to thepriesthood for up to 12 months and, until his/her priestlyordination, is not able to celebrate Communion. A newLiturgy incorporating aspects of both the 9:15 and 11 amservices will be introduced and will develop and evolve duringthe trial period. Provision is being made for constructivefeedback and an open Parish Forum meeting will be held fordiscussion and to receive feedback about the two Sunday format. The date for this meeting has yet to be announced. While the number of services held in a church is a prerogativeof the Incumbent it was decided by clergy and Corporationto seek input and feedback of parishioners on this issue.

The aforementioned Parish Forum, a successor to the former Parish Council, will begin after the co-chairs are electedat the Vestry in February. As described in the InformationEvening session last September, the Parish Forum is expectedto consist of approximately twenty persons and will havethree meetings per year. The mandate of the Forum is to provideadvice to the clergy and corporation on key issues that areimportant to the congregation and central to their interest. This will be an exciting opportunity to focus on some of thekey challenges facing not only us at Christ Church Deer Parkbut other established and mainline Christian denominationsin Canada as well. These include declining attendance andlower Sunday collections at a time when the need for ourhelp in the community and elsewhere has never been greater.Going forward we have to face the inevitable fact that somechurches will have to merge or close as they have ceased

being financially viable and are unable to sustain their operations. While Christ Church Deer Park has the benefitof financial reserves through our various funds (Endowment,1870, and Building) we cannot rely on these resourcesindefinitely. The Operating Deficits that we have been sustaining for the past several years cannot continue. Now is the time to address this issue, develop a realistic financialplan and to take action. The challenge to each and everyone of us is to become more actively involved in the life andactivities of the church, to support the clergy, wardens andthe various ministry heads at CCDP. In addition we mustcontinue to provide financial support and to be willing tostep forward, without being asked, and participate as a volunteer in one or more of our many activities. No longercan we “leave it to the next person” as the next person isyou. The future of your church is what we collectively electto make it.

THE YEARS SEEM TO SLIP AWAY faster these days - this pastyear of PromiseLand has been a hive of activity. Dramacontinues to play a large part in PromiseLand, and over the year there were dramas on Epiphany, Palm Sunday andof course Christmas. The summer drama camp was lots offun. The children have participated fully in services as readersand intercessors. The Cherub Choir was born and the children have enjoyed learning new songs for worship.

Even the weather didn’t dampen the children’s enthusiasmwhen we celebrated the Blessing of the Animals indoorswith Bishop Tottenham. I met Bubbles the Japanese fightingfish and Cocoa a brand new kitten.

Now we look forward to Confirmation at the Easter Vigilon Saturday April 3rd at 7pm. Bishop Patrick Yu will joinus as some young people take the next exciting step ontheir life long journey of faith exploration.

I have been privileged to be part of Christ Church andespecially part of the ongoing faith development of somany wonderful children. As some of you know I havebeen made an ordinand, which means that on Sunday May2, at 4:30 pm I will be ordained to the diaconate byArchbishop Colin Johnson. For me this is the fulfillment ofa ten-year journey. There have been no definite decisionsmade about PromiseLand but, let me assure you that it willcontinue. The continued faith development of our childrenis something the wardens and indeed all of us hold dear. I do know that as long as whom ever succeeds me in theposition has the same unwavering support from parents andparishioners as I did - they and PromiseLand will continueto flourish and grow.

I am grateful for everything you have done for me and Ihonestly do not think there is a better place to be nurturedand formed as a priest. Thank you!

I would like to take a moment toexpress my gratitude for the warm welcome I’ve received, and to say how much I look forward working with andlearning from you.

Outreach

Community BreakfastTHE BREAKFAST PROGRAM began as a response to the prioritiesmembers of the congregation identified during the StrategicPlanning Days held during 2006 and 2007. At CCDP wealready had a proud record of local service through our “Outof the Cold” Program, and we also had an interested core ofexperienced volunteers at the ready. We now supplementCalvin Presbyterian’s long-running biweekly breakfast programby offering a similar meal on alternate Saturdays. Team leadersfrom both churches continue to communicate, and althoughboth breakfast operations remain independent, we are proudof our ongoing ecumenical collaboration!

The Community Breakfast program at CCDP is now wellinto its third successful year. Its two principal goals remainunchanged: to provide a biweekly hot breakfast for those inour community who need extra nutrition and to offer anopportunity for those at CCDP (and beyond) who wouldlike to serve in a local ministry. The program benefits a vulnerable population, while allowing volunteers at CCDPto work out of their own church facility. It also addresses aless tangible, but still pressing need in the community - thatof loneliness. It’s obvious on Saturday mornings that manyof our “regulars” look forward to their time of fellowship ina friendly environment almost as much as they do to theirgenerous portions of delicious scrambled eggs, sausages andtoast.

For this reason, providing a safe, family-like atmosphere inwhich to serve breakfast remains a priority. Guests are welcometo come just as they are: no payment is required, no personalquestions are asked, nor any means test applied. Over time, this policy of inclusion has helped engender an atmosphereof trust and mutual respect between guests and team membersalike, which we as volunteers work hard to sustain, andwhich the guests obviously appreciate.

What’s ahead for 2010? We will serve breakfast ten timesbetween January and the end of June 2010. Beyond that, our ability to continue this valuable program will depend, as always, upon the availability of sufficient financial andvolunteer support. We need more of both - more money

Churches on-the-Hill Food BankSOME FACTS from President Paul McGrath’sReport:

“...under the auspices of the Daily Food Bank, we operatean ‘Emergency Food Proagram’. This supplies groceries tohouseholds who have a place to live but whose income isfrequently unsufficient to make ends meet; the result is, alltoo often, that they go hungry for a short period. This isthe need that we attempt to fill.

...we have over 500 households (1 to 8 people) in our activefiles and see perhaps 300 of them 2 or 3 times each month.

...in 2009, we provided over 14,000 adults and childrenwith groceries sufficient for 3 days; that amounts to foodfor 126,999 meals! This was up 10% from 2008 and weexpect that 2010 will continue to see an increase indemand.

...the Daily Food Bank supplies about 60% of the food wedistribute; local food drives, church collection baskets anddonations of food from individuals contribute perhapsanother 5%; the balance is purchased. In 2009, we spentamost $70,000 on food and supplies for our clients. Thesefunds came from our sponsoring churches, their

congregations and the larger community.

...We are a 100% volunteer organization with about 125individuals giving of their time and talent. Turnover is verylow, the key indicator of a happy and committed group ofpeople. Our overheads are minimal and no-one is compensatedin any form for their work at the Food Bank.”

AdvocacyWE ARE COMING INTO a new season and with that comesnew projects. Our support for agencies such as Citizens forPublic Justice and so many others will of course continue, but, it would be great to expand on what we are alreadydoing. I have spoken with our friends from some of theChurches on-the-Hill about pooling our resources on issuesor public concerns which may come up and throwing in oursupport and vice versa to give the issue a louder voice. Thiscould be as simple as posting a petition in each church to besigned by the interested members of the congregation. Toexpand on this idea, I would more than welcome yourinvolvement. THE CONGREGATIONresponded positively andenthusiastically to ourGroup Art Show heldon the three Sundays ofAdvent. We also attractednew artists from withinthe congregation whowere delighted at this

opportunity to display their work to a very appreciativeaudience!

The predominant feedback was that we need to have moreof these shows. So, we are now organizing two more GroupArt Shows: the first during two Sundays in Lent, Feb. 28thand Mar. 7th respectively, with the theme “Contemplationand Meditation” and the second on the two Sundays afterEaster, April 18th and 25th, with a theme of “Joy and Elation”.

We’ve added a few new volunteers to help us with the VisualArts Program Initiative – and even a non-parishioner hascome aboard to help us make this project a reality.

The project of enhancing the ASR to display art in a memo-rable way, without upsetting the existing décor, has startedafresh with two new enthusiastic and committed volunteers:Walter Blackwell and Mark Tearle.

CHRIST CHURCH DEER PARK JANUARY 2010

From theOrgan Bench

“Should auld acquaintance be forgot, and never brought to mind? Shouldauld acquaintance be forgot, and auldlang syne?”

IT’S ONLY BEEN A SHORT TIME since the strains of “Auld Lang Syne” welcomed in 2010, and here atChrist Church Deer Park our musicprogram is already back in full

swing. Our Thursday Lunchtime Recital Series resumed onJanuary 7th, as did our regular choir practices (6:30pm forthe 9:15am Sunday choir and 7:15pm for the 11am Sundaychoir) and our choristers are once again out in full force onSunday mornings.

To make the best use of our time, the two choir practicetimes listed above will change to a single choir practice onThursday evenings (start time: 6:30pm) between Februaryand Easter. This will enable the 9:15 and 11am choristers to join together to prepare the music they will sing at our10am combined Sunday morning services.

Planning ahead, the choir has already begun to rehearsemusic for our Good Friday concert: “God So Loved theWorld: A Concert for Good Friday”. The concert will havea Celtic flavour and will feature the soloists and choir ofChrist Church Deer Park, duo-pianists George Vona andLark Popov, and special guest, harpist Erica Goodman.More information about this concert will be available in thedays to come, so please check the Music page of the CCDP website for updates.

As I write this, Robbie Burns Day is just around the cornerand I’ll be attending Burns Suppers where I’ll be enjoying“haggis, neeps, and tatties” and once again hearing thestrains: “For auld lang syne, my dear, for auld lang syne,we’ll tak a cup o’ kindness yet, for auld lang syne.”

Which reminds me - in case I haven’t had a chance to wishyou this in person - Happy New Year!

A word about change...AS WE CONTEMPLATE combining two of our Sunday morningservices, many are concerned about the compromises in theliturgy that will likely result should our experimental periodbecome permanent. There are those who are most comfortablewith the contemporary service and those who cherish thetraditonal liturgy and, for them, change is hard to comprehend.

The prayer book addressed the issue of liturgical change asfar back as 1549(!). This quote can still be found on p. 717BCP.

“And whereas in this our time, the minds of men are sodiverse, that some think it a great matter of conscience todepart from a piece of the least of their Ceremonies, they be so addicted to their old customs; and again on the otherside, some be so newfangled, that they would innovate allthings, and so despise the old, that nothing can like them, but that is new: it was thought expedient, not so much tohave respect how to please and satisfy either of these parties,as how to please God, and profit them both.”

Judging by the response, comments and suggestions ofthose who attended the information meeting on January26th, it would appear that this congregation is prepared to try to “please God”.
