voting for their two favorite chilis.
“We provided the employees with big bowls, small bowls and
tasting cups,” said Casey Clark. “Some (employees) got very
creative, placing four tasting cups within the big bowls so
they could carry all eight chilis back to their seat. We handed
out two tickets to each employee to vote on their top two
favorite chilis.” In order to hide the identity of the cooks,
each chili was assigned a number; the result was a blind taste
test where employees voted on the entrants purely on taste.
At the conclusion of the safety presentation, votes were
tallied: Mirissa won First Place, a gold medal and a wooden
spoon engraved with the words “Chili Champ;” Fana won
Second Place and a Silver Medal; and Missy was awarded
Third Place and a Bronze Medal. Best yet, all three have
bragging rights until next year’s competition.
CHILI COOK-OFF
They stirred. They spiced. They sampled. And after all the
votes were in, the first Annual Designetics Chili Cook-off
was one for the ages.
As part of the company’s annual HAZCOM Training,
Designetics developed the idea of having an employee
cook-off as a way to build camaraderie—and fill some
bellies in the process. So, on May 8th, eight employees
squared off, bringing in pots of their chili finest. Some went
the vegan meatless route. Some tackled their secret family
recipe. And one even went with deer meat chili, creating a
venison version.
Other employees pitched in too, bringing in accoutrements
like oyster crackers, sour cream, jalapenos, cornbread and
the like to accompany the chili entries. Then came time for
the samplings; each employee was to taste all eight entries,

WELLNESS TIP
BENEFIT TIP
TIPS FOR WORKING OUT IN THE SUMMER HEAT
Warmer, sunny days are finally here, but after exercising in
cooler Spring temps, hot and humid 80-degree days can feel
overwhelming. Running, biking, hiking, even walking feels
harder in the heat, so here are some tips to help you get
through your Summer workouts.
Be flexible about when you work out: Become obsessed with checking the weather, and find out when temps are going to be the lowest that day. Sometimes it’s early in

the morning, and sometimes late in the evening, so you’ll need to rearrange your schedule to fit in exercise during the coolest time of day. A plus about morning workouts is many of your neighbors might be watering their lawns, so you can run through their sprinklers to stay even cooler.
Take a cold shower: I know it seems a little odd to shower before a workout, but the cold water will cool you down.
Change up the type of workout to fit the temps: On super hot and humid days, choose cooler cardio activities like biking in the wind or swimming in cold water.
Exercise in cooler places: Hit the trails in shady woods or along a breezy beach shoreline.
Shorten or split up your workouts: Summertime isn’t the best time to push yourself, so if you can only handle 10 minutes at a time, do what you can, or exercise twice in one day.
Drink water all day, not just before or after your workout: Staying hydrated will help prevent some of the symptoms you may experience from exercising in heat such as dizziness, stomach cramps, and headaches. During your run, sip four to eight ounces of water every 15 to 20 minutes.

ARE YOU ASKING THE RIGHT QUESTIONS?
When looking for a supplier of fluid applications systems and solutions, it’s easy to get swept up in sales pitches and hype
from providers. So, are you asking the right questions?
Here’s a few questions to get you on the right track. After all, the choice of a wrong provider—whether it be for applicator
tips, dispensers or even a whole fluid application system—could mean product spoilage, downed assembly lines, work
stoppage, missed deadlines or lost revenue.
IS THE PROVIDER THE MANUFACTURER?
When working with a fluid application system provider,
it’s important to work with a company that builds their
own products. Why? OEMs are closer to the products,
understanding the intricacies of the components
and knowing both the strengths and limitations. So,
these providers can better consult with you and, if
a problem arises, troubleshoot more effectively. For
example, Designetics has more than 5,000 applicators,
accessories, and automation components in its
inventory—5,000 products it has developed, tested and
refined for clients.
IS THE PROVIDER CONSULTATIVE?
There are two types of sales processes: consultative
sales and product sales. With product sales, a provider
is looking to sell-in or “push” the product du jour. With
consultative sales, the provider first explores the problem
and then offers solutions. At Designetics, sales engineers
work with clients to understand their processes and
design around those needs.
WILL THE PROVIDER CREATE NEW PRODUCTS
FOR YOU?
Sometimes off-the-shelf products just won’t cut it. Can
the fluid application system provider make new products
to fit your needs? For example, Designetics creates a wide
range of prototypes for clients, tweaking designs until
they are a perfect match for the client’s automated or
manual processes
Simple questions…but the answers can spell the
difference between your success and failure.
