The “Heart” of the Jungle
Your group has been challenged to develop the next generaton of medcal technolog!
for !our local "oo# $s !ou %no& gorllas have been su'erng from ncreased rates of
cardovascular problems( especall! heart dsease# The )rst step to combattng heartssues n gorllas( as n humans( s to ma%e sure that &e have proper montorng
procedures and technologes n place#
$s such( !our group has been tas%ed to create a &earable heart health montor for a
gorlla that the gorlla &ll be able to &ear for at least one contnuous da! at a tme n
order to get the best nformaton about the gorlla*s heart health# Your group must follo&
the crtera put forth b! the "oo and must consder all the thngs that the prmate
%eepers have put on ther “thn% about ths” lst#

Criteria:
• Must be wearable by a gorilla for at least 24 hours at a time
• Must be durable enough to remain functioning while the gorilla wears it.
• Must be comfortable for the gorilla
• Must be able to monitor ECG and/or pulse automatically (no buttons need to be pressedetc.)
• Must be worn in a location that will accurately monitor the gorillas heart
Think about this…
• he gorilla habitat at the !oo contains water and many of the gorillas li"e to climb trees.
• Male gorillas beat their chest to display dominance
• Gorillas are e#tremely curious and will try to interact with anything that ma"es noise or
displays a light.
$our presentation must be created using ema!e or pre!i and must include%
• & picture of what your design would loo" li"e
• 'hy your design ts the criteria
• & description of what your deice is designed to monitor and how the ECG and/or pulse
sensor wor"s
• *ow you considered the !oo"eepers list and factored their thoughts into your design
$our re+ection must include answers to the following ,uestions%
• 'hat was your group-s nal denition of the problem to be soled
• 'hy is this an important problem to consider
• 'hat was the most diicult thing about designing your health monitor and why
