THE HEART JEWEL OF THE FORTUNATE

A convenient recitation to perform the six preliminary practices

Compiled by

Venerable Dagpo Lama Rinpoche Jampa Gyatso

The first of the six preliminary practices is to clean the meditation room and set up representations of the Guru’s and the Three Jewels’ Body, Speech and Mind. The second is to arrange faultless offerings in an attractive manner. The third is to sit on a comfortable seat in meditation posture and then, with a mind of extraordinary virtue, to take refuge and generate the mind of enlightenment.

VISUALISATION OF THE MERIT FIELD (not to be recited)

In space in front of me, on a precious throne both high and wide, borne by eight great lions, on a seat formed by sun and moon discs and by a multicoloured lotus, is my main Spiritual Master, so kind, in the form of Victorious Shakyamuni. The colour of his body is like that of pure gold. On his head is the crown protuberance. He has one face, two hands. The right presses the earth; the left, in meditation posture, holds a monk’s bowl full of nectar. He wears saffron coloured monk’s robes. He is sitting in vajra posture in a flood of light which emanates from his body, made of pure light and adorned with the major and minor marks of a Buddha. In front of Him, on an exquisite stands, are his Teachings in the form of books of light. The Buddha looks upon us with contentment. We; in turn, at the thought of his compassion and virtue, feel great faith in Him.

REFUGE MEDITATION (not to be recited)

Myself, and all beings - my mothers - from beginningless time until now have continously undergone all the sufferings of cyclic existence in general, and those of the three lower realms in particular. It is nevertheless still difficult to fathom the depth and breadth of these sufferings. But now that I have attained a choice human life, free and endowed, so difficult to attain and so meaningful once acquired, and that I have met the Buddhas’ Teaching, so difficult to meet, if I do not realise supreme liberation, free of all samsaric pain, perfect, complete Buddhahood, then once again I will have to experience the various sufferings of cyclic existence in general and those of the three lower realms in particular. As I now have before me the Masters and the Three Jewels who can protect me from this pain, I will realise perfect Buddhahood for the sake of all living beings - my mothers -; to this end I take refuge in the Spiritual Masters and in the Three Jewels.

Homage

Homage to youthful Arya Manjushri !

However many there are in the world’s ten directions,Those man-lions - Buddhas of the three times -,With faith in them all without exception,I pay homage with my body, speech and mind.

By the power of my faith in Bodhisattva practice, In my mind’s eye I clearly see all the Conquerors; With bodies as numerous as the pure lands’ particles,With great deference I bow deeply to the Conquerors.

On each particle are as many Buddhas as there are particles,Each one surrounded by Buddha-sons, I imagine thus all of space,Completely filled with Conquerors.

Singing a sea of infinite praise,With all the sounds of my countless tongues,I exalt the virtues of all the Conquerors,And celebrate every Sugata.

Presenting Offerings

With magnificient flowers, beautiful garlands,Excellent cymbals, lotions and parasols,Fine lamps and exquisite incense,I make offerings to all the Conquerors.

With fine garments and rare perfumes,Mounds of fragrant powders as high as Mt. Meru,All very beautifully arranged,I make offerings to all the Conquerors.

These great and unsurpassed offerings,In thought I dedicate them all to the Conquerors;Full of faith in Bodhisattva practice, I pay homage and present offerings to the Conquerors.

Having understood that the kind Master is the foundation of all excellent And that following him correctly is the root of the path,Bless me that I may rely on himWith deep respect and repeated effort. #

Now that for once I have a favourable life form full of leisure,Knowing how very difficult it is to attain and its great significance, Bless me that the thought to take its essenceDay and night may be born in me continously. #

May I remember how death quickly puts an end to life, - As fragile as a bubble on the water's surface -,And how, after death, black and white karmas follow usAs our shadow follows our body.Having attained a firm understanding of this, Bless me that I may always be careful To abstain from even the slightest ill-deeds, And to acquire a complete store of virtue. #

When indulged in, samsaric pleasureCaused dissatisfaction and lead to suffering;Having understood their drawbacks and their unrealiability,Bless me that I may strongly aspire to liberation’s bliss.

With great vigilance, self-restraint and mindfulness Drawn from that pure aspiration, Bless me to make the vows of personal liberation the heart of my practice,For they are the root of the doctrine. #

Having seen that, like myself, all beings - my mothers - Have fallen into the ocean of cyclic existence, Bless me that I may train in the supreme mind of Enlightenment, Taking on the responsibility to free all living beings. #

Bless me to truly understand thatUnless one trains in the three ethics The mind of Enlightenment cannot lead to Buddhahood,So that I may practice the Bodhisattva vows with great enthusiasm. #

Bless me that by quieting attraction to wrong objects And correctly analysing emptiness,I may quickly realise the path Uniting mental peace (shamata) and superior insight (vipashyana). #

Bless me that when, through training in the common path, I become a suitable vessel,

I may easily enter the fortunate ones' excellent gateway to the Vajrayana, Supreme vehicle among all vehicles. #

Then, when absolutely certainThat keeping the vows and commitments pure Is the basis of achieving the two kinds of realisations, Bless me that I may guard them with my life. #

Having correctly understood the main points of the two stages - The heart of Tantra -, bless me that I may practice them energetically According to my Masters' instructions,Without ever neglecting four session yoga. #

Please bless with long life the Spiritual Masters Who in this way show us the good path,And those Dharma friends who practice correctly, And ensure that all inner and outer obstacles are completely subdued. #

In all my lives, may I never be parted from my perfect MastersAnd may I practice the glorious Dharma; Having fully accomplished the virtues of the paths and levels, May I quickly realise the state of Vajradhara !#

DEDICATION PRAYERBy Jey Tsongkhapa

By the two collections as vast as spaceProduced through the effort made in this (practice),May I become a victorious Buddha, A guide for all beings blinded by ignorance.

Until then, in all my lives, under Manjughosha's kind guidance,May I encounter the supreme path,Complete with all the teaching's stages,And delight all the Conquerors through my practice.

Using the points of the path that I have correctly understood,With skillful means inspired by deep compassion,May I clear away the darkness from all beings' minds,And uphold the Buddhas' teachings for a very long time.

In those lands where the supremely precious doctrine has not spread,Or having spread has since declined,Profoundly moved by great compassion,May I elucidate this treasure of benefit and joy.

May the stages of the path to Enlightenment,

Well accomplished through the Buddhas' and Bodhisattvas' wondrous deeds,Bring supreme happiness to those who aspire to liberation,And may the Buddhas' activity be sustained forever.

May all humans and non-humans who remove adverse circumstancesAnd create conditions favourable to the practice of the good path,In all their lives never be parted From the true path praised by the Buddhas.

Whenever I strive to correctly realise the supreme vehicleBy means of the tenfold Dharma practice*,May the Protectors always assist me;May an ocean of good fortune sweep over all quarters !
