THE HEART OF ASCENSION June 19, 2020 Dear Ascension Family: At long last, we are preparing to reunite for congregational worship. It is a time of uncertainty, anticipation, and perhaps apprehension. While Governor Wolf’s order never closed houses of worship, like many other organizations we decided to move to virtual worship in support of the civic effort to avoid a steep increase in COVID-19 cases that would overwhelm the health care infrastructure. Now that this civic initiative has taken its course, we will be joining the rest of the country in taking gradual steps back toward normalcy. Effective as of June 28, we will resume in person worship at our normal time 9:30, but with some changes. We want to ensure that the way we return follows the available guidance from the CDC and state public health authorities on keeping our members, guests and staff as safe as possible, as much as possible. Some of the immediate changes include: 1. A “deep cleaning” of the full building prior to our first worship together. 2. A practice of social distancing in the sanctuary (six [6] feet between households), and seating in every other pew. 3. A request that we do not linger inside the building entrances/exits prior to and following worship services. Please enjoy the beautiful weather outside as you visit from six (6) feet apart! 4. The wearing of face coverings indoors in all parts of the building for those who are over age two (2) and medically able to do so. (This is not required when someone is working in the building, alone or in a separate contained space.) 5. Placement of face coverings and cleaning supplies around the facility. July 2020

THE HEART OF ASCENSION

June 19, 2020

Dear Ascension Family:

At long last, we are preparing to reunite for congregational worship.

Some of the immediate changes include:

1. A “deep cleaning” of the full building prior to our first worship together. 2. A practice of social distancing in the sanctuary (six [6] feet between households),

and seating in every other pew. 3. A request that we do not linger inside the building entrances/exits prior to and

following worship services. Please enjoy the beautiful weather outside as you visit from six (6) feet apart!

4. The wearing of face coverings indoors in all parts of the building for those who are over age two (2) and medically able to do so. (This is not required when someone is working in the building, alone or in a separate contained space.)

5. Placement of face coverings and cleaning supplies around the facility.

Page 2: THE HEART OFascensionpgh.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/July... · 1. A “deep cleaning” of the full building prior to our first worship together. 2. A practice of social distancing

6. Posting of CDC information to encourage the CDC recommendations to limit the spread of the virus.

7. Requests that EVERYONE sign in when entering the building for worship or for any reason. (In the event we’d need to reach everyone in the building during a certain period.)

8. A temporary “pause” on our food fellowship. 9. Changes in procedures for the worship itself including dispensing with passing of

the peace, and passing the offering plate and a change to using disposable communion kits.

10. To limit the need for cleaning and disinfection, the fellowship hall and classroom areas will be taped off. If anyone needs to comfort a child, we will temporarily ask parents to use the narthex.

11. Children’s bags will be stored. Please feel free to take one (or more) from the closet on your first visit and keep it in your car for your kids’ use during services. Please don't put any bags back in the closet.

12. Hymnals will be stored temporarily and bulletins will be online. 13. We’re looking for volunteers to wipe down the hand rails after service - please

see Pete Candreva if you can help.

There is one difference in our plans and the CDC guidance that we would like to call your attention to: we will be singing (behind our masks) as a congregation during the service. After discussing it as a council, we just feel this is too big a part of the worship experience to do away with, even temporarily.

We will have additional changes to communicate at the end of summer, as we make plans for resumption of Sunday School and Bible Study.

We realize there may be those in our body who do not feel comfortable yet in joining a public gathering. We are making plans to enable streaming worship services while they are happening live, so that there is an option to worship from your home. Imagine, if you are traveling on vacation, you could still worship with your family at Ascension! Please watch for emails from Barb Marcellus with information on how to access the service remotely. We owe a big thanks to all those involved in our worship ministry for their efforts throughout the stay-at-home orders and their continued efforts as we prepare to reunite.

Happy Father’s Day – we’re looking forward to seeing everyone as they are able to join worship!

Yours in Christ,

Church Council

Virtual VBS is coming up!!! Please continue to cover this program and our families in prayer! Here are some dates to remember:

If you registered your children for VBS, be sure to pick up your VBS Take Home Kit during one of the following time slots this week:

o Tuesday, July 7, 6:00-7:00 pm o Wednesday, July 8, 3:00-4:00 pm o Thursday, July 9, 9:00-10:00 am o For those who registered for VBS, we will be emailing out reminders and

video links each morning from July 13-16! If you did not register yet, you can still register to receive the content (https://forms.gle/rFAu41yYv2dPDvuC9), but we cannot guarantee we’ll have a Take Home Kit for you.

Email [email protected] if you have any questions!

ALL ARE WELCOME TO JOIN IN THE VBS MISSION PROJECT! This year’s VBS mission project is “Christmas in July” for the residents and staff of Concordia Lutheran Ministries at The Orchard and Franklin Park sites. We will be making cards, candy canes, videos, and signs for distribution to the staff and residents in these facilities. We have all had a difficult time adjusting to social distancing, separation from our friends and family, and the new normal. It is so easy to feel alone and forget that we can have JOY every day in the knowledge that Jesus died and rose again for our sins! It can be easy for anyone to forget that, but especially for those people who were already experiencing acute loneliness and isolation. If you would like to be involved, put on your “Gospel Boots” and feel free to drop off a card at the church office by July 23rd for distribution. There will be craft items available for those who may be feeling especially creative! If you have any questions, please contact Becky Marquette at [email protected] or 724-924-2538.

UPDATE FROM THE PULPIT COMMITTEE: Pastor Zang responded to our call document with a brief visit to Pittsburgh on June 22. Please keep him and his family in your prayers as they seek discernment about the call to Ascension.

It’s with a very conflicted heart that we announce the cancellation of our Annual Summer Festival at the Concordia at Cabot campus and the second postponement of the Fishing Derby for Kids at Saxony Farm Estates (date TBD). Additionally, the Fashion Luncheon fundraiser, held at the Butler Country Club, has been postponed to August 22 and the Concordia Dog Show, held on the Cabot campus in August, will no longer be open to the community. These events are a big part of our culture and who we are as an organization. We love how they connect us with our communities and we especially love the fact that they make people happy. So please know that making the decision to cancel or postpone them out of an abundance of caution to the COVID-19 pandemic did not come easy. But we hope that by making these difficult decisions in the short-term, we can help minimize the long-term effects of this virus on our residents, patients, staff and the communities we serve. With that said, as the country begins to take steps towards re-opening, we would ask of you the same thing we ask of our staff: Please, for the sake of our older population, remain vigilant to help prevent the spread of this virus. Stay focused on practicing common sense infection control interventions, such as frequent and thorough hand washing, wearing a mask in public places, disinfecting touch points, coughing/sneezing into your elbow and staying home if you are ill. We know it's getting tiresome, but these are the steps we need to take to help protect our grandmas and grandpas. Also, spread love and pray for one another. Those are two resources we can never have enough of.

**********

Due to the continued uncertainty regarding COVID-19 and large events, unfortunately we have made the tough decision to cancel our Fashion Luncheon this year that was scheduled for Saturday, August 22, 2020. This decision was not made lightly. This event, and others like it, are a huge part of Concordia’s culture and who we are as an organization. Protecting the health, safety and wellness of our residents, patients and staff members is always our top priority, and these measures are being taken to serve our communities, both on campus and off. We, at Concordia, are praying for you and looking forward to another event that supports our Good Samaritan Endowment Fund - one of Concordia’s most meaningful traditions. We ask that you hold the date for next year’s planned Fashion Luncheon to be held on Saturday, May 22nd, 2021.

June 2, 2020

With great regret, the Board of Directors of Pioneer Camp and Retreat

Center, Inc. wishes to advise the Eastern District of the Lutheran Church -

Missouri Synod, the member churches of the Eastern District, and the general

public that, due to the unprecedented challenges presented by the COVID-19

pandemic, Camp Pioneer will cancel all scheduled programming and events

for 2020, effective June 2, 2020. This means all scheduled camps, retreats and

weddings will be cancelled. We will be reaching out individually to those

parties who are affected. In accordance with New York State operating

guidelines, Camp Pioneer intends to make cabin rentals available through the

Labor Day weekend. It is our hope that those who wish to visit Camp Pioneer

this summer may be able to take advantage of the cabin rental program. For

more information, call Camp Pioneer at (716) 549-1420.

June 19, 2020

On Friday, June 19, the Members of Pioneer, Inc. meeting in Williamsport,

PA, upon prayerful discussion and consideration of factors relative to the

continuation of camp ministry, unanimously agreed to sell Camp Pioneer.

Further details will be shared when appropriate and necessary.

The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod LCMS Stewardship Ministry

“Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?” asked the rich young ruler. Jesus said, “You know the

commandments.” And the ruler replied, “All these I have kept from my youth.” And Jesus said to him, “One thing

you still lack. Sell all that you have and distribute to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come,

follow me.” (Luke 18:18–22)

As we listen to this, one question is raised in our minds: Is Jesus speaking to us also or only to the rich young ruler?

In other words, is Jesus telling us to sell all that we have and give it to the poor? As good Lutherans, we answer: No!

But why? Why should we not sell all that we have and distribute it to the poor?

The simplest explanation is this: If we sold everything we have, our wife and our children would be neglected. In

other words, to sell everything we have and give it to the poor would ignore, even abandon, those whom God has

placed in our care. Our money, everything we have, is not to be used solely for the church. But that doesn’t mean it

isn’t to be used for the purpose God intends.

Everyone has three stations in life, three spheres in which we live and are to be of service to our neighbors. These

stations are the church, the family, and society. We are members of all three of these by birth.

We are born into the church by water and the Word of God, and our duties to others in the church arise

from either our birth into the church or the birth of others by Baptism into it.

We are born into a family, and our duties to others stem from either our birth into that family or the birth of

others into our family.

Finally, we are born into society, which is simply a further extension of our birth into our family. The

duties we have toward other members of society come from either our birth or the birth of others into the

same society.

All that we have and all that we are is to be pressed into service for the church, the family, and society. If we were to

sell all we have and give only to one, the other two would be neglected, and our duties toward them would falter.

So consider your life and all that you have in light of these three stations. You pay taxes to support and help those in

society. You provide food, clothing, and shelter for the members of your family. You save for college for your

children.

But the one station that is usually thought of last is the church. Since the needs of the family and society are more

immediate, the church is often given what is left over. This is not how it should be. Rather, we are to give of our first

fruits – the best from off the top – even as Abel gave the best of his flock.

This requires forethought and intent. It means that you sit down and make a plan for what you will give from the

beginning. It means sticking to it even when it seems there are other more immediate and pressing things.

This is all the more necessary now as we enter into periods of time while giving is low due to high unemployment or

restrictions on meeting in church to give. If we love God, his gifts of forgiveness given through the means of grace

we receive at church and only at church, then we will support the church just as we love our country and our family.

For all that we have and all that we are is given to us by our gracious and giving God. He spared no expense for us

and our salvation. He gave up His Son into death so that our sins are forgiven, and we will live. What is more, He

provides for all that we need for this body and life. And our lives in this world, among these three spheres of the

church, the family, and society, are to mirror the generosity of the one who gave us life in all three by birth.

Don’t let the church, your divine family, be ignored or even an afterthought. The church is nurturing you, bringing

you up in salvation by Word and Sacrament for eternal life.

In most communities, firework displays have been cancelled due to COVID. That might leave you scratching your head, wondering what you are going to do this year to celebrate the 4th of July. It could be that you have always staked out the same spot each year. Maybe friends and family have joined you there. What will you do now that life has changed? Does this mean that Independence Day has lost its purpose?

Loss of purpose is scary. We often live a big part of our lives without any “purpose” associated with what will happen to the financial gifts found in our estates after the Lord has called us home. That can be scary too! Sometimes, we don’t know how to begin addressing that purpose and organizing ourselves so that we can put together a purposeful plan, using legal documents prepared by our attorneys to direct gifts to Godly design. You are not alone. Nearly half of all Americans have yet to complete this work.

“Fred” and “Mary” had procrastinated throughout their marriage, never wanting to spend the time and navigate the legal complexities of getting everything in order. Finally, they partnered with an LCMS Foundation Gift Planning Counselor to begin organizing their plans, understanding the entire scope of gifts the Lord had given them to manage. Through a few weeks of planning and lots of prayer, they completed their plan. At the end they shared, “It feels so good to have this in place!” Godly purpose feels good, for it resonates with God’s design for our creation.

You may not be able to reinject purpose into the 4th of July this year without fireworks. But you can apply purpose to your estate plans. Your LCMS Gift Planning Counselor can help. Contact Robert Wirth, LCMS Foundation Gift Planner at [email protected] or 716-863-4427.

Expanding Our Mission to Reach and Serve Even More Families

We are excited to announce the newest addition to the “network” of services we offer to families in Pittsburgh. Women’s Choice Network, along with mission partners at Allegheny Center Alliance Church, will open a “first-class” children’s resale store in the space adjacent to WCN’s East Ohio Street clinic in the North Side neighborhood. The new resale store will be an inviting children’s boutique featuring consignment quality kids clothing and merchandise. We hope to open the North Side Children's Resale store in late Summer! Look for updates as we make progress.

As part of our commitment to empower moms and dads to choose life, the goals of the new store will be to:

Offer practical/material support in the form of clothing and merchandise for our clients. Provide a significant new way for you, our network of donors and partners to support the

organization with non-cash donations. Invest in our community by providing internship opportunities and on-the-job skills training for

client “interns.” Offer ongoing opportunities to help local families in need with consignment quality children’s

clothing and merchandise at a very low cost. Provide funding for WCN’s ongoing life-affirming clinical and medical services. Maintain an attractive destination storefront that will help introduce our mission to a broader

audience.

Amidst COVID-19 Uncertainty, THRED Usage Spikes

As COVID-19 drives us inside and away from face to face contact with others, our cell phones and laptops are getting a workout. Lutheran Hour Ministries has also seen a surge of people using its Facebook page and its digital conversation website THRED (thred.org). In recent weeks, THRED's visitor traffic and interaction have reached new highs as people everywhere are searching for an encouraging word. "THRED content continues to spark spiritual conversations in digital spaces, and the website is seeing an incredible increase in use," said Rachel Legoute, digital development manager for Lutheran Hour Ministries. "Final numbers aren't available yet, but in the first week of stay-at-home orders, THRED views and engagement were up more than 1,000 percent. Also, a new video blog (vlog) created in response to the pandemic charted more than 70,000 views in two weeks," she added. The vlog is part of the THRED brand voice and features Legoute and Jon Christopher, one of LHM's video editors. The vlog offers advice on how people can respond thoughtfully during COVID-19. "It's a good example of how THRED is positioned to pivot quickly and engage people in spiritual dialogues caused in part by our global struggle with COVID-19," Legoute added. As with all THRED content, these vlogs are designed to connect with those outside the church. "When a connection is made we listen to understand, ask questions to clarify, and take a genuine interest in that person's life," Legoute said. "THRED has been working hard the past three years to create safe spaces for conversation and community online. Because of the work we've done to gather an audience and gain their trust, we are uniquely positioned to respond to our current global crisis with empathy and compassion," she added. Barna research shows that a typical 15 to 23-year-old will spend nearly 3,000 hours a year using screen media. Out of those 3,000 hours, that same sample group will take in only 153 hours of spiritual content. The competition for our attention on digital devices and from screen-based media is huge. "With such a small portion of that content being spiritual in nature, we know that there is a lot of room to create THRED content that gets people talking about life, faith, and Jesus," said Legoute. Access THRED's thought-provoking articles, vlogs, and more by going online at thred.org or finding it on Facebook.
