How is your approach to treating heart disease unique? There is no treatment plan backed by a study longer than the one I conducted, and no study has produced such dra-matic, visible results. Coronary angio-grams (X-rays) of the patients in my study show an actual reversal of the disease. To experience these benefits, patients must stick to my plant-based diet program strictly, but the effects are more than worth the effort. For those who are very sick, it is the most effective treatment option—far less dangerous and more effective than invasive surgical procedures such as stents and bypass (except in acute emergencies), and much more effec-
tive than drugs alone. Traditional car-diology has relied on technology to ease the symptoms of heart disease but has not addressed its causes. My approach is not a stopgap solution; it prevents heart disease from occur-ring in those who don’t yet have the disease, and it heals the body and reverses the disease when symptoms are present.
What would you say to someone considering a stent or other sur-gical procedure or drug therapy to treat heart disease? All heart patients who are not abso-lute emergencies should first have an aggressive opportunity at nonsurgi-cal medical therapy. This is not just my opinion but that of expert cardi-ologists across the country. The differ-ence in my case is that I advocate an aggressive plant-based nutrition pro-gram to arrest and reverse the disease and to avoid all surgery. Drugs alone do not prevent heart attacks and stop symptoms of heart disease.
How do you encourage your patients to stay on the diet? There is no question: it is hard at first. And it is hardest eating out and at friends’ houses. Still, I am always impressed at how well my patients do once they experience the relief of chest pain, weight loss, and the improved feeling of well-being they
have when they follow a plant-based diet. Then the motivation comes from within.
Why does the diet eliminate oil entirely? The reality is that oils—even olive oil, which many think of as a “good fat”—are extremely low in terms of nutri-tive value. They contain no fiber or minerals, and they are nothing but fat calories. Above all, they contain satu-rated fat, which immediately injures the endothelial lining of the arteries.
Can you actually enjoy food on the program? We love our food. The patients love the food. It is all a matter of attitude—and you do need a positive attitude to get started and to understand that this new way of eating is the best thing you can do for your body. The body will help you adjust. You actually begin to lose your physiologically based crav-ing for fat. Once that occurs, you can fully appreciate the natural taste of plant foods—tastes and textures that are difficult to surpass.

An Interview with Dr. Caldwell B. Esselstyn
There’s more to the environmen-tal crisis than just global warming.
Toxic metals such as lead, aluminum, cadmium, and mercury pervade our environment and threaten our health, impairing the function of our organs. Pesticides, herbicides, insecticides, fun-gicides, fumigants, and fertilizers con-taining these metals and other toxic substances seep into our soil and food. Chemicals and hazardous waste con-taminate our air and water.
These environmental toxins directly poison body tissues and cells so that they can no longer function as they should. Exposure to these toxins has been linked to immune deficiency and cancer.
Prescription for Nutritional Healing offers the following tips to prevent environmental toxicity and help the body detoxify itself:
• Use burdock root and red clover to assist in cleansing the bloodstream and lymphatic system.
• Try using turmeric, which contains curcumin, to inhibit tumor growth. It helps boost the liver’s ability to eliminate environmental toxins from the body.
• Use an air cleaner or ionizer for relief of symptoms. These devices remove animal odors, bacteria, dust, pollen, smog, and smoke from the air.
• Use nontoxic cleaning products whenever possible. There are many environmentally friendly alterna-tives to choose from.
• Know your cookware. Most metal pots and pans leave residues of metal in your food. Some of these metals—like the iron from cast-iron skillets—actually can be beneficial. But other metals, such as aluminum, can be harmful.

The average adult will spend more than 200,000 hours sleeping in a
lifetime, the equivalent of more than 8,000 days, yet we are only just begin-ning to understand what happens to our bodies and minds when we sleep. Sleep: The Mysteries, the Problems, and the Solutions is an extraordinary look at the latest scientific discoveries in understanding sleep and treating sleep, disorders from leading sleep expert Dr. Carlos Schenck.
Dr. Schenck explains and then of-fers solutions for the most common sleep disorders—insomnia, restless leg syndrome, sleep apnea, and more. But what sets this book apart are the fascinating new insights Schenck provides from the cutting-edge sci-ence that he and other researchers have pioneered in identifying and explaining the realm of “parasom-nias”—mysterious, more extreme sleep disorders such as sleep terrors, sleepwalking, sleep violence, and sleep-related eating disorder.
Backed by the latest medical re-search, this is a groundbreaking book about what remains one of our most mysterious medical puzzles.
