Quiz and Bingo Lots of pupils took part in the quiz and bingo sessions. Teams took part in a ‘Family Fortunes’ themed round, a game of Scattergories and then had a chance to guess the staff member from their baby photos. Some have hardly changed at all – Mr Horan, Mr Stacey and of course Mr Langdown needed no clues at all! All pupils played their own bingo games. Sweets and chocolate were prizes for winning pupils and teams. These sessions are a good taster for pupils, who will then hopefully come along to the already very popular quiz/bingo evenings. These take place every Wednesday after school in the Library. Each session was full of fun, entertainment and competiveness.

Yummy Domino’s pizza and Cineworld … what more could you want. A large group of pupils enjoyed pizza, snacks & muffins in school, then we had a quick stroll through the beautiful Queens Park which took us to Cineworld at Regent Circus. Pupils also had sweets in the cinema, I don’t know how they found the room!! We watched The Lion King which was fantastic- I had my tissues at the ready- I highly recommend this for the summer holidays. The pupils were perfectly behaved all afternoon. A lovely, relaxing enrichment trip was had by all.

Lawn Manor Academy Enrichment Week!

An interview with the Head teacher We asked the Head of the school, Mrs Muir, if she was enjoying enrichment week. She stated, “I think enrichment week is amazing for pupils and teachers. I also enjoy the music rehearsals outside and I’m absolutely loving the weather.” Also we asked what her idea of enrichment week was. She replied by saying, “Having fun after a hard working year.”

A Message from Mr Simmons As we approached Mr Simmons, he gave us a brief understanding on how enrichment week was organised, he said, “Enrichment week has to be done in advance so that it isn’t done in the last minute.” This takes some pressure off the teachers. Mr Simmons says, “Everyone is calmer in the enrichment week.” This shows that enrichment week has a positive change on pupils’ behaviour, meaning that IER can be closed for the week. Enrichment week is for both staff and pupils to enjoy and participate in. Journalists: Carter Clarke Y8 & Chloe Herbert Y9

Our last question to Mrs Muir was about what her favourite part in enrichment week was. She responded, “It would have to be the different trips. My absolute favourite activity of enrichment week would have to be on Thursday when everyone gathers on the field as a school for the end of the year celebration and performance where everyone enjoys themselves.” Journalists: Samina Omar Y9 & Jaymie Howells Y9

The musical showcase! As a major activity of enrichment week, a large number of pupils were selected to participate in a musical showcase. This involved performing in either a group dance or a few songs. We spoke to a number of pupils to get their opinions on the matter. One pupil from Year 8, Harry Francome, who is contributing to the music part said, “I am scared to play the piano in the showcase but I am also very excited!” Another pupil from the dance group, Lily Webber from Year 8, said, “I like this dance and I think everybody else will as well. We have put so much effort into this.” Prajwel Magar, a musician, stated, “It is a very fantastic experience and I’m very excited to perform.” From what we have heard, a lot of effort has gone into this performance and it’s going to be fun for both the audience and the pupils who are taking part. Journalists: Abigail Tucker Y8, Larnie Perrett Y8, Amy Lewis Y8 & Jennah Childs Y8

Behind the scenes of the musical showcase Nick Moore, A Year 10 pupil in technical support, spoke to our reporters about what goes on behind all the magic on stage during the musical showcase. Nick says that he does everything from the music to setting everything up. Nick also said “I’d rather have enrichment week once a year than end of year quizzes every lesson.” This shows that our pupils enjoy participating in different activities both inside and outside of the classroom. Nick is also looking forward to using his experience during enrichment week and in the drama and music department when he is volunteering at the Wyvern Theatre. This also proves that enrichment week isn’t just all fun and games either and it can help our pupils develop skills that can help them in their later life and career. Cricket in the sun Lots of people really enjoyed the cricket matches and were staying highly competitive despite the high temperatures. Mr Smith gave advice about playing cricket in the sun: “when doing cricket in the summer bring a hat, lots of sun cream and plenty of water.” This was good advice since the temperature was high at almost 30 degrees and could have caused dehydration and drowsiness. I interviewed Henry Owen and Keenan Fortes, Y7, about what they were doing today. Keenan said, “We’re going against Dwayne’s excellent team,” with Henry adding “We’ll need to be good to win.” Journalists: Rio Tusha Y7 & Matteo Blanks Y9

Murder in Lawn Manor There are two forensic science classes, 1C9 with Miss Maggot and 1C5 with Mr Green. In these classes a group of approximately 30 pupils have to solve a murder that has happened in 1C10. Both classes have to do different types of forensic science evidence tests. These involve finding any traces of fingerprints, analysing DNA, finding any traces of blood splatters, types of chemical testing and cartography. In 1C5, Mr Green stated, “The point of forensic science is to see whenever there’s contact and there’ll always be a trace left of the suspect.” Mr Green stated another point of forensic science was, “To investigate the trace and exclude people that aren’t guilty of committing the murder.” Journalists: Kristian Wiles Y9 & Mclan Fernandes Y9

The Chess battles On Tuesday, 23 pupils went head to head, competing with each other and taking on challenges. There were multiple games being played such as Uno, monopoly and chess. The pupils were extremely competitive about their games and desperately trying to overcome their opponents. Journalist: Matteo Blanks Y9

Lawn Manor Bake Off The enrichment week was a spectacular 4-day week in which the pupils had various activities to do. Through a number of interviews, I can confirm that the vast majority of people enjoyed it. It was a week to remember. Many people who were asked if they were enjoying the session so far said that the sessions were “very enjoyable” or “extremely interesting.” The gardening team all enjoyed painting pots, making wooden planters and weeding. They even made a Snakes and Ladders game! The Lawn Manor Bake Off competitors had two mystery challenges that they had to bake: one of them being a small cookie or cake for a tea or as a snack. Examples of the types of food cooked for this competition were small eclairs, minced pies and biscuits. The pupils also had to make two other dishes. One of the teachers had made a surprise dish with spiced plums and clotted cream. One of the pupils labelled the experience of cooking in a competition “really fun, yet still interesting.” Journalist: Bianca Cantoreanu Y9

July 2019

Dear Parent/Carer

I am writing to inform you that the school is launching a new attendance initiative. We have revised our procedures and will be working with parents and carers to improve attendance and punctuality. This is because research has shown that regular attendance and good punctuality are crucial factors in pupils achieving their full potential. Lawn Manor Academy is committed to providing a full and efficient education to all, and encouraging our pupils to strive for excellence. Therefore, for a pupil to reach their full educational achievement, a high level of attendance is essential.

Pupils who attend school regularly also feel more connected to their community, develop important social skills and friendships and are significantly more likely to be set up for a strong future. Good attendance is an expectation of employers and it is proven to have the biggest impact on student outcomes than any other factor, apart from good teaching of course.

We wish to work in partnership with parents and carers and so are seeking your full support in ensuring that your child attends school every day and on time. We are always pleased to work together with parents/carers in resolving any difficulties but we are also committed to improving attendance levels at Lawn Manor Academy.

The target attendance figure for all pupils is a minimum of 98% attendance. Based on current attendance figures your child will be placed in one of the groups as shown on the attached Attendance Diamond. Your child will be informed of their Attendance Group each week.

Regular attendance is not just a legal requirement, but it is vital for pupils to maximise their learning, and achieve full potential here at Lawn Manor Academy. There are a number of important steps that you can take to ensure your child maintains a high level of attendance:

Ensure your child attends every day, on time, equipped and ready to learn. School begins at 8.40am; arrival after this time will result in a C4 same-day detention.

Ensure the school has up to date addresses and telephone numbers. We will contact you by text through Text to Parents or by telephone if your child is absent and you have not contacted the school. This ensures that truancy is quickly identified

If your child is ill, contact the school on our Attendance Line (01793 427749) by 9am on the first day of

absence and on any subsequent days of absence. If you wish to check that your child has arrived at school, please contact Mrs Pocock on 01793 427749;

she will inform you if your child has been registered.

Page 13: The Headteacher’s Weekly Newsletter · Journalists: Kristian Wiles Y9 & Mclan Fernandes Y9 . Tuesday, 23 pupils went head to head, competing with each other and taking on challenges.

If no contact is received regarding the absence, it is recorded as unauthorised. Ultimately the school is responsible for deciding if the absence is acceptable or not. Only genuine absence will be authorised. You will be asked to provide medical evidence if your child has a poor attendance record.

Ensure that medical appointments are made outside of school time.

Avoid trivial absence such as, ‘buying new shoes’. This would not be accepted as a reasonable absence.

Holidays should not be taken in school time. Holidays will not be authorised during term time and a

Fixed Penalty Notice will be issued by Swindon Borough Council. Respond to school letters or telephone calls regarding attendance and punctuality.

Contact your child’s Year Leader if you are experiencing difficulty in getting your child into school, or

attend our weekly Attendance Clinic for parents/carers where you can meet one of our Education Welfare Officers; please see the weekly newsletter or website www.lawnmanor.org for more information.

Thank you for working in partnership with us to achieve the highest possible levels of attendance and punctuality at Lawn Manor Academy.

Yours sincerely,

Russell Langdown Deputy Headteacher
