I began watercolor painting while a student at Punahou School and minored in art in college. After graduation, I gave up painting to raise four children, one of whom is also an artist. Volunteering at Punahou led to employment there as graphic designer for fifteen years. Many of my student staffers went on to careers in the art field. Retirement brought time to paint again. Determined to master watercolor (I love its transparency and glowing colors) I took a class at Linekona from Juanita Kenda – amazingly, also my art teacher as a freshman at Punahou! As a way to keep on painting, I organized the Windward Wanderers. We have met weekly to paint together “en plein aire” for 15 years. I have especially enjoyed being a part of the HWS Board. Participating in show planning and taking advantage of twice-yearly workshops has been an opportunity to learn much from other artists. Meg Stone gives a great critique and Roger Whitlock has been an inspirational and supportive teacher – thanks! And I’m working on that “mastering watercolor” for Signature status!

Inspiration awaits in the HWS DVD Library! Don Andrews’ video Making Watercolor Glow

along with six of Don’s Figure Painting dvds are now available! Enjoy and learn from the HWS Art Video Collection

Visit the HWS website or see the back of your HWS roster for a list of the available instructional DVDs and details on how to rent them.

Art, Linekona) Juror - Robert O’Brien

Awards Reception September 27th, 5-7pm

Prospectus available on line at www.hawaiiwatercolorsociety.com

Robert O’Brien has been painting in the watercolor medium for forty years. Since moving to Vermont in 1977, he has focused his work on landscape and architectural studies. Vermont, with its distinct four season climate, provides him with a wealth of subject matter and ever changing light effects. Robert is known for finding beauty in the ordinary, subtle reminders of everyday life in rural New England. In his own words, he is driven “to capture the vanishing landscape in my paintings” before they disappear forever as a result of the steady hand of “progress”. Since 1998 Robert O’Brien has traveled annually to Southern France. The region’s sun-splashed landscape and timeless quality of light has added a new dimension to Robert’s paintings. Don’t miss this opportunity to work with this award-winning artist. Be inspired by this master of light and color whose work has been featured in numerous publications including Watercolor Magazine, Splash 9, 10 and 11 Best of Watercolor, and l’Art de l’Aquarelle. See more of Robert’s work on his website. Visit www.robertjobrien.com.
