LOGLINE
Rose, a mostly sweet & mostly lonely Irish small-town driving instructor, must use her supernatural
talents to save the daughter of Martin (also mostly sweet & lonely) from a washed-up rock star who
is using her in a Satanic pact to reignite his fame.
SHORT SYNOPSIS
Rose, a sweet, lonely driving instructor in rural Ireland, is gifted with supernatural abilities. Rose
has a love/hate relationship with her ‘talents’ & tries to ignore the constant spirit related requests
from locals - to exorcise possessed rubbish bins or haunted gravel. But! Christian Winter, a washed
up, one-hit-wonder rock star, has made a pact with the devil for a return to greatness! He puts a
spell on a local teenager- making her levitate. Her terrified father, Martin Martin, asks Rose to help
save his daughter. Rose has to overcome the fear of her supernatural gift & work with Martin to
save the girl, get the guy and be home in time for a light snack...maybe a yogurt or something...
LONG SYNOPSIS
Rose is a sweet, lonely driving instructor in Ireland with supernatural abilities called “The Talents”
that allow her to communicate with spirits (inherited from her father Vincent, who made a living
peddling videos about the supernatural.) Rose has a love/hate relationship with her gifts, (blaming
herself for her father’s death), and ignores the community’s requests to investigate ghouls in the
cupboard or headless horsemen scaring cows. So when widower Martin, haunted by his nagging ex-
wife Bonnie, contacts her for help at the behest of his teen daughter Sarah, Rose brushes him off. But
she can’t shake Martin from her mind, and her sister Sailor encourages her to at least consider the
job.
Meanwhile, local aging rock star Christian Winter has a sinister plan for success – virgin sacrifice. He
casts a spell on Sarah leaving her levitating and catatonic. Martin begs Rose’s help, and she agrees.
From Vincent’s notes, Rose learns that to save her they must exorcise ghosts for a counter-spell…and
fast. They’ve two days before Sarah’s dragged into a fiery pit of hell.
Martin and Rose set about the exorcisms, while Sailor minds Sarah. Despite the weird situations -
haunted wheelie bins, rude oil painting, possessed toilet roll - they work well together. And there’s
budding attraction between them - though neither act on it.
3
But when Christian learns of their plan, he blocks Rose's talents, in doing so trapping Bonnie’s ghost
inside Martin's body. Martin and Bonnie fight for control, and in the chaos Christian summons Sarah
to his castle….
Rose, Martin (still struggling with Bonnie) and Sailor hightail it after Sarah, arriving to discover
Christian has managed to open a gateway to hell. To save Sarah they’ll have to to close the portal in
the most awkward way possible…
QUOTES FROM WRITER/DIRECTORS MIKE AHERN AND ENDA LOUGHMAN Regarding Shoot & Casting - "We are delighted we have somehow convinced an incredible group of
actors and funny people we really admire, along with an amazing crew and some random folk that
we just wanted to meet, to join our fever dream and make this mysterious romantic oddball ghost
story love comedy adventure film. The timely script obviously hit home as it shines a light on
important, serious issues like that of haunted rubbish bins in rural Ireland. The fact that International
super talent Will Forte has come on board suggests the topic of tiny hauntings is a universal problem
that needs to be highlighted and addressed. See you at the Oscars! "
Regarding SXSW Premiere - “We couldn’t imagine a more fitting festival to show EXTRA ORDINARY
for its world premiere. Just like in our film, the SXSW line-up will no doubt feature a few creepy rock
stars, as well as some weird but lovable folk with supernatural powers. It’s the perfect fit. We are
very excited and honoured!”
SOME NOTES ON THE FILM FROM WRITER/DIRECTORS MIKE AHERN AND ENDA LOUGHMAN
Background & Tone
EXTRA ORDINARY is a character based romantic comedy with supernatural elements. The initial idea
was inspired by two characters very briefly mentioned in this article that we felt focused a lot of other
funny ideas we were having re: Ireland's rural spirit-world. We liked this description:
'We contacted husband-and-wife ghost-hunters Ray and Beryl Herne from Central Parade to send the
poltergeist packing. Spirit medium Ray, a 52-year-old lorry driver, says he can draw the gross ghost into
him while Beryl, 59, will envelope it in a "vortex of light" and send it to the "other side." Beryl said:
"Sometimes spirits need to be here. There is usually a reason. Sometimes it's family. Sometimes we have
to alleviate some stress."
While the article was silly, these sentences grabbed our attention as an initial basis for some great
very local yet very universal characters. Describing Ray: Ray, 'a 52-year-old lorry driver'. This made
4
our minds flip. How does 'enveloping spirits' become a normal thing to do? How did they meet? What
are her gifts? How does she counsel the ghosts? A world of ideas started to emerge.
The title EXTRA ORDINARY informs the tone we created with this film, in that from the outside these
are very ordinary people, 'extra, ordinary' in fact, and in many instances the supernatural
occurrences are almost banal.
We have very deliberately flipped the Horror movie idea that all hauntings are these big powerful
demons that tear people apart and ravage bloody revenge on the living. We want the opposite of
that. Hauntings can’t be seen because ghosts are small and a bit crap. They bit like humans, stuck in
a situation they don't like with low energy and can’t figure a way out.
Rose, our hero, is inhabiting a world that is quite banal to her. It’s extra ordinary because she knows
what’s out there but chooses not to look. In fact, when we meet her she has rejected her gifts - it’s
the arc of her accepting them, and the story that unfolds is 'extraordinary' to her and especially the
viewer.
Themes
As well as the themes of overcoming loss, of ‘being stuck’, and finding love - we think there are other
underlying tones and themes across the film such as living in a small town. In a broader way, our
film’s tone captures the tropes of a culturally specific landscape with close observations of the quiet
tedium and comedically morbid nature of small-town Ireland. Your mother ringing you and telling
you who has died. The paradox of myth and religion. 'It's fairy magic, god help us’.
It’s somewhere in between loneliness and tradition. We both love Irish folklore, superstition and
stories and we feel this film treats and examines them in an inventive, unique and fondly comedic
way. We have added a lot of our own character and character’s we know from this rural Irish
landscape to the story, albeit at times heightened versions. We wanted to stay true to these people
and ideas, by tonally holding back from being a cartoon version of rural Ireland, our characters and
scenarios are funny but we take them seriously.
Vincent & The Talents series.
The Talents is a colloquial 'general' name for the supernatural gifts that Rose possesses. Although
fictional, we are basing the ideas within it, on Irish beliefs, from faith healers to superstitions and old
folklore practices. We also were inspired by Charles Fort's strange studies and writings on a host of
5
extraordinary phenomena which bridge the borderlands between science and fantasy. Again, a
universal idea, we are just focused on the local.
Rose's father Vincent is an expert in The Talents, and pops up as a guide throughout the film. We
introduce the idea that he is obsessed with documenting the Talents and has created a rudimentary
guide to the supernatural gift. It is presented like a series of lo-fi circa 1990's ‘Investigating the
Extraordinary’ instructional videos, sometimes quite detailed, all surrounding supernatural
phenomena in Ireland, what they are, and how to deal with them. Visually we treated these segments
as realistically as possible, while still divining the comedy from a well-placed Voice Over and
unexpected image. They mimic the naive style of simple home edit and using graphics and titling that
you would find on Instructional Videos of this nature and time period.
If Ghosts exist why don't we see them every day?
As we wrote and directed the film we had a quite clear ‘manifesto’ of self-imposed rules throughout
the process. This guide governs how much, or in the case of this film, how little visual effects we
would like to see on screen. Our hauntings are all invisible, our ghosts never seen, just suggested and
ingested. Our ghosts are characters instead of effects. This we feel is a somewhat unique and comedic
take on the horror tropes, creating a fresh funny take on genre stereotypes. We decided to leave a lot
to the power of suggestion and when we do see something to stylistically do as much as possible in-
camera, rather than a digital effect. Small moments will become a big deal.
We both come from a design and animation background and at different stages have worked
extensively in post-production, animating and creating effects on our own projects and for other
people. With this in mind we incorporated hauntings into the script in a certain way to limit the
amount of on-screen effects, we feel this decision of limitation adds to the story and characters.
To suit the 'everyday' - the ‘ordinary’ world concept and tone, we wanted the opposite of a film with
many effects and big set pieces. We saved the big production value and vision we have to build to the
end. Itl demanded more from our actors and (hopefully!) will pay off in laughs. We feel it also builds
the film to a visual crescendo by holding our VFX trump cards until the final scenes. And even in that
sequence we have designed the Ghost Demon to be a purposefully a clever nod to the 'classic idea of
a ghost' and also how simply ghosts have been portrayed in film history, animation photography and
art.

QUOTES FROM PRODUCERS Regarding Shoot & Casting - We're thrilled to be working with an incredible cast of hilarious, talented
people, and to be supported by a brilliant crew. Mike and Enda are real talents and have written a
unique, madcap, hilarious and slightly appalling script and are bringing it to life with such obsessive
attention to detail it’s frankly exhausting. Truly though, we are extraordinarily proud to be producing
their debut feature and we hope that audiences will fall in love with the characters and their hilarious
adventures just as much as we have."
Regarding SXSW Premiere - “We're thrilled to be having our World Premiere in SXSW which holds a
special place in our hearts after the incredible experience we had there with CITADEL. We're
extraordinarily proud of Mike and Enda's debut feature and we hope that audiences there will fall in
love with their unique characters and their hilarious madcap adventures just as much as we have."
SOME NOTES FROM BLINDER FILMS PRODUCERS
From the outset EXTRA ORDINARY was a stand out project for us. Immediately after reading the
treatment, we were both completely charmed by its fun and fresh approach to romantic comedy and
also the tongue in cheek nature of its ungainly exploration of the spiritual and superstitious world of
rural Ireland. This particular thread injected a wonderful juxtaposition of nostalgia to the newer
romantic, comedic territory it traverses. We believed this dichotomy would be one of its strongest
selling points.
We are very excited to be working Mike and Enda on their first feature. We love the innovation and
approach in their work, across the board from their commercial projects to their short films, MR.
FOLEY and THE HATCH. Their work is predominantly pitched left of centre, always deliciously funny
with varying levels of darkness and irreverence while at the same time always very satisfying to their
audience. With EXTRA ORDINARY they are challenging not only the conventions of the romantic
comedy but also that of supernatural horror. While romantic comedy has been going through a
subversive period, it is still hard to find one which subverts the isolation, frustration and loneliness
of rural living from a dramatic theme, to a story you can evoke great humour and strong resolution
from. The supernatural comedies of the last few years seem to have pitched predominantly in the
slapstick camp with few exceptions. EXTRA ORDINARY not only presents the supernatural side of
Ireland in a comedic light, but also has threads of real darkness running through it, as well as,
ultimately, real heart. We’re so delighted we’ve been able to help Mike and Enda bring this world and
their characters to life.

Direction and Scenic Design – for his work on THE FARTHEST.

becoming very well known for his work on films, Joe’s credits span the genres from period horror
film, to contemporary comedy, picking up IFTA & EMMY nominations for his work along the way
“Looking back, my experience working on EXTRA ORDINARY was great. The crew were brilliant and
we all bonded together very quickly. The cast were fantastic from the minute they were on set and
working with them was great fun. Solving visual problems ‘in camera’ is something I love doing as part
of my job and EXTRA ORDINARY definitely had its fair share from spinning camera rigs to collapsing
toast racks to exploding goats”.

British independent film, notably collaborating with Director Ben Wheatley on all his features to
date, including FREE FIRE, HIGH RISE, A FIELD IN ENGLAND and KILL LIST. Martin’s darkly fanciful
oeuvre also features; PREVENGE, AAAAAAAH!, THE GREASY STRANGLER, Peter Strickland’s THE
DUKE OF BURGUNDY and IN FABRIC and the occasional short including BAFTA winner ROOM 8.

Technology and Sound Engineering.
