One of the first African American artists to use African subjects and designs in his paintings.
Won the Harmon Foundation’s Gold Award ( created by William E. Harmon and offered achievements for different fields such as literature, fine art, music…etc.)
HAYDEN’S WORK Most famous piece from Hayden. “ Depicts the resident of Harlem’s brownstone houses and showed a thriving African American community.”
HAYDEN’S BACKGROUNDWent to school arts at Union in New York City and at Boothbay Art
Colony in Maine.
Created his first piece of art in 1926, “ Fetiche et Fleurs”(won the award)
Lived in Paris, but then returned to the America and worked for the US
government. U.S. Treasury Art Project
Made a series of paintings on African-American folk hero John Henry.
