This week's Most Added is dominated by album depth tracks, and the one Ron Diaz feels is "The strongest one on this album" rules the roost. Legit adult appeal? WEGR's Kelly Cruise says, "Some of our older listeners are surprised that a rocker like Jon has come up with a song like this". • THE NEW AIRPLAY ANALYSIS

Timbuk 3, "Life is Hard", IRS.... WRXK's GregMull tells us "I like 'Life Is Hard' better than the firstsingle, and based on current top 40 play on 'Future'we ought to be all over this track". Yowzah. Thefollow-up moves 60-50, pulling the album up 36-32.It's new on 17, now on 66, with KMET, KILO, WDHA,KSQY and WKWQ upping and heavy play on 9,including WONE, WQFM, WNDY, WMAD, and CILQ.

"Tearing Us Apart" takes a nifty 40-27 hike, with 16 adds, 7 (WEBN, WOUR, WRCN,WTPA, KLOS) increases and 21 heavies. "Miss You"is also on the move, 76-62. The above action movesthe Lp 6-5, all in all his strongest album start sincethe 70's.

Bruce Hornsby, "On The Western Skyline",RCA.... Now that "The Way It Is" is #1 in Billboard, time to power up on the new one. 14 adds and 10increases move it 20-13, with KLOS, KZEW, WLUP,KBCO AND WHJY leading the increases. He's gotheavy spins at 32 and power play on 7 more. The top5 phone count now includes WCCC, WPYX, KGB,WIOT, and WQBK.

Huey Lewis, "Jacob's Ladder", Chrysalis....The button's obviously been pushed here, too --asper the 47-34 track advance. "Ladder" lands 13 adds, including heavy play at KSJO, WCCC, WPDH, WKLCAND KRNA, for 59 to date and ups from WIXV, WOURand WQBK. It's already heavy on 27.

Iggy Pop, "Real Wild Child", A&M....The Igman picks up a cool 93-71, with new air on 11--led by KOME, KYYS, WHCN, WKFM, WOUR, andWRCN. KROQ, KRQU, WHTG, KMOD and WTOS listheaviest early play, with 45 now on board. KQWB'sTy Banks comments, "The first single did well, withtop 10 sales at one store and better than averagecalls. That's surprising in this market, so 'Wild Child'is in". WLNZ's Cathy Down adds, "Iggy is alsostarting nicely on the phones. I love that song, probably one of my favorites on the air right now".Or, as Bob Bittens explains, "We made an earlycommittment to Iggy with an out of the box add on'Cry', so it's only fair that we continue our support byadding 'Real Wild Child".

Ann Wilson, "Best Man In The World",Capitol.... Ann has collected 99 adds in just threeweeks, and we're expecting closeout playmomentarily. WHJY, KLPX, WOUR, KLOS and KMBYpace this week's 9 increases. Currently heavy on 17,power on 7, and underlined 27-18. KGON's InessaYork offers, "Isn't Ann Wilson's song positively the'Goldfinger' of '86! Great melody modulation, Ann."From WKDF's David Hall, "Ann is getting top 5phones and they're so well deserved for such a greatsong". If for some reason you're still skeptical, takeit from WIZN's Steve Cormier, "The song doesn'tknock me over but I'm not a fool. It's gonna be bigthanks greatly to Heart's last Ip."

Jason and the Scorchers, "Golden Ball andChain", EMI.... This record cannot be contained. Itblasts 33-26 for its sixth consecutive underline, courtesy of 9 more adds, 104 to date, and 11 playincreases --with KYYS, KGB, KBCO, KOME, andWOUR.Currently #9 Most Requested, with KQRS intotheir fourth week of top 5 action, and equally hot

phones at KBAT, KWQB, WQFM, KOMP, KMJX,WKLS, WPYX, WWTR and WKDF. WWCT's PhilManicki feels "Jason has the rawness that keepsradio fun", and from KICT's Phil Thompson, "It seemsthat style of music is doing very well right now andthey've been through town a couple of times".

The Outlaws, "One Last Ride", Epic.... You'veread the "Best track on the album" comments --andnow the stats confirm that interest. It's now on 32 --including WYNF, WOUR, WBAB, KBCO, WSHE,WRXK, WONE, WMAD, WIOQ, WDHA, KZEL, KNCNand KLPX--debuting at #80 on the Hard Hundred.WMAD's David Anderson nails the sound and image,"The winner of this months' I -used -to -read -RollingStone -but -now -I -read -Esquire' Award --to theOutlaws, for continuing musical maturity withoutlosing the raw edge of their youth".

Peter Gabriel, "Big Time", Geffen.... Top 10here he comes, fueled by 20 increases, 9 adds, 100stations now playing , 36 heavies and 10 powers.Underlined 32-19.

Steve Miller, "Nobody But You Baby",Capitol.... The single's still on top of the world at #1,so album depth play would seem a natural at thispoint. As WIYY's Chris Emry sez, "Here comesanother cut from the comeback player of the year, also known as the 'Bruce Buster". Curt Garyagrees, "I knew it was a good album when it firstcame out, but now audience reaction is provingbeyond a shadow of a doubt that Stevie 'Guitar' Milleris back". "Nobody" notches up 9 adds, with KZEW,KRQR, KRIX, KLBJ, KQRS, WAPL, KWHL and WXRCalready into heavy.

Billy Idol, "Don't Need A Gun", Chrysalis....Big phones lurk around the corner, as does top 10play. "Gun" gets a 31-22 underline, with 8 adds, 105to date, and 36 heavy reports. The increase inventoryoffers KYYS, KOME, KUPD, KTYD, WWCT, KFMX, andWUVA.

World Party, "Ship of Fools", Chrysalis.... Thisrecord's already on fire --but wait til you feel theripple effect from this week's MTV "Hip Clip" rotation. That accellerated schedule will deliver a minimum of8 exposures per day; between 49 and 57 a week.Meanwhile, back at the radio ranch, "Ship" shores up8 more adds, for 72 to date, moving to #52. WAPL'sRick Panneck feels "'Ship of Fools' is a great cut thatadds a little spice to the playlist." From PhilThompson at KICT, "World Party took a while but nowit's really there". Look for this and Europe to scorehighest in the Holiday Breakout sweepstakes.

Love and Rockets, "All In My Mind",Bigtime/RCA... The Bay area is the hot spot, withnew adds at KSJO and KRQR as well as early adds atKOME and KFOG. KSJO's Dave Numme says, "Wewent with it because it was stunning and soemotional. It's gonna get great reaction. There reallyhasn't been any music like this out lately". RobinMathieu agrees, "I hope that over the holidays Loveand Rockets builds the way the Cult should have lastyear. Open your ears to "All In My Mind". It's a onelisten song". Pretenders, "My Baby", WB.... "Mirrors" picks up6 adds and four increases, but thick traffic held itsteady at #44. The current count builds to 69, 15 ofwhich have it heavy. "My Baby" is this report'spremier performer, with 16 increases, 60 in heavy and8 in power. Can't argue with the move into the top 10,either. The album holds tight at #3.

Robert Cray, "Smoking Gun", Polygram.... IfMr. C's show in town tonight is half as cool as hischarts, watch out!! KICT's Phil Thompson is alsostoked about the upcoming show, reporting #1phones in Wichita..WKFM's Steve Becker just caughtthe act, and he predicts "This man could be a big asThorogood"..The most talked about "new" act tocrack album radio's ranks rolls up a 29-20 advance,13 deep in play -ups and 25 strong in heavy reports.Currently top five requested at KGGO, WBRU, WEGR,and KLUB. Europe, "The Final Countdown", EpicYou've got to respect those acts that blast pastbiases --be they "too teen", "Video sensation", or"Don't Like the Cover". Here's a prime example of atrack that's proven it works across the board. Asnoted by KNCN's Bonnie Stacy, "The sales made meadd it to begin with. The misconception is that they'rea metal band, which they're not. It's more like ELPpop rock". From J.D. Stone at WTKX, "Europe hasthat AOR hook. I catch myself whistling it every time Ihear it. It's like peanut butter for the mind". Send thatman a big jar of Skippy!! It's now on 53, with WPLR,WAQX, KRNA, WBYR, WDHA, WKLC AND WOURupping, and top 5 calls at WPLR, KFMX, KRNA,WCMF, WOUR, WPYX and WTKX.

Beastie Boys, "Fight For the Right to Party",Columbia.... Here's the perfect counterpoint topredictability. WBCN's Carter Alan comments,"They've had a smash from the first moment it hit theair. 'Fight For The Right' is a natural in this collegetown, but everyone parties sometime, so it's gonnabe a natural". Rumor du jour: Consultant Dave Logan leavingBurkhart -Abrams to return to KFOG/San Francisco, possibly as OM. This would explain the firm's listingfor a consultant last week. This has been rumorcontrol. Out.

GATEWAY GONESKIThe memo to staff at KSHE/St. Louis read like this:

"We regret to inform you that JC Corcoranelected not to accept the latest offer made to him byKSHE radio the for 1987 contract year. In otherwords, we have been unable to come to terms. As inpast years, both sides have worked very hard andlong to come to an agreement that is beneficial toboth sides. Because we have been unable to agree,JC will be leaving the KSHE Morning Zoo effectiveimmediately. You may, however, see him around thestation until December 31, when his current contractexpires. Rich Dalton will be headlining the Zoo, atleast until we've found a replacement for JC. Fromwhat we've heard, JC has had some very lucrativeoffers at radio stations located in much largermarkets than St. Louis. Please join us in wishing JCthe best of luck, where ever he goes. It's been a hellof a time --good luck, JC."[signed]John BeckRick Balis

With that, the morning host and KSHE partedcompany, ending a two -and -a -half year run.

And how about that "offers from radio stations inlarger markets" part? Sure, the road goes on forever, but Interstate 55 goes from St. Louis to LakeMichigan. NOISE has heard rumors the next off -rampis in Chicago at WCKG.

Reached in Chicago, VIDIGM Marc Morgan said,"No comment." Marc also said he had "talked to a tonof people" about WCKG's PD opening and has"narrowed it down to a few."

STILL UP FOR GRABSThe WLVQ/Columbus morning team of Pat Still

and Wags could well be on its way to Detroit formornings at WRIF. WLVQ its a 12+ knuckle crusherthat gets diaries from any living organism in its TSA.(It's got a 16.3, #1 in all cells 18+.) Next year, theaudience will declare itself its own nation. To add tothe blow at QFM 96, Still is also the PD.

WRIF has been looking for a morning show sincelosing JJ and the Morning Crew to wuz severalmonths ago.

The inside traders say Still might stand Pat, andnot leave Buckeye Village. WLVQ wants them asbadly as WRIF.

"I don't know," said Pat. "Whoever gives us thestretch limo is in."

SEBASTIAN PROGRAMS KDKBCall veteran programmer and consultant John

Sebastian's phone machine lately? "Or you canreach me at KDKB..." is the last part of the message.

"We were looking for someone who had strongprogramming capability and great knowledge to givethe format the help it needs," said SanduskyVP/Programming Jeff Sattler. He also noted thatSebastian was a Phoenix resident, knew the marketfrom his tenure as KUPD PD, and that "what's reallycritical down there is execution. We believe that Johncan create on -air excitement and spontaneity in ourClassic Rock format."

(Remember Tampa Bay Coach John Robinson'slegendary line? When sportswriters asked about histeam's execution, he said he thought "It would be apretty good idea.")

"Our immediate goal is to execute properly andmaximize the potential of KDKB," said John. "Theresources of this radio station make me veryconfident this will be a major success story."

WIOQ/Phila. and goes to WCXR/DC. The former WYNYand WIOQ morning man will do wakeup at theWashington classic rocker, which took a hit in arecent ARB.

  • THE INDUSTRIAL NOISEPLEN'S PLAN

Michael Plen has resigned at IRS Records. Hewas VP/Promotion and was with the label for 6 1/2years.

Actually, he's hoping to get the WNEW-FM job.Whatever. The Kreskin in us says this man has

    naive nubiles in his future.

...And while we're on the subject of that WNEW job, let's talk with sister station PD and Double Digiteer,Ted Utz...

TEDDY BARES ALLThe Ted Utz InterviewBill and Steveski talk with the PD of America'sPremier AOR

Noise: Have you been offered the WNEW-FM job?

Ted: The first thing I want to say about New York isthe Giants are going all the way. I don't give a shitwhat anybody says, they're great.

Noise: Back to the real world...

Ted: The answer is no. From what I can tell, there isno rush to fill that spot.

Noise: We heard you'd been offered it as much as amonth ago.

Ted: No. I talk to (GM Mike) Kakoyiannis all the time, just as members of the same group, and there'snever been an offer.

Noise: How tough do you think it would be to fillCharlie's shoes?

Ted: Mike said that Charlie was the "only true PDWNEW ever had." Without taking away anything fromScott Muni or Richard Neer, Charlie went in there, with his vast experience, and brought WNEW into the80's. He made them competitive; he approached thestation from a business standpoint.

Noise: Do you want to do New York? Under whatconditions would you?

Ted: I think deep -down inside, New York is the townI grew up in, andWNEW is the radio staion that got me into thisbusiness. I remember everything: Muni startingWOR-FM one year before WNEW-FM, WABC-FM,

WNEW as all -female, the closing of the Fillmore, allthe magic moments of New York radio. I think thatbeing a part of that heritage, obviously, has a greatdeal of appeal. But I don't think that any job in thisbusiness could be better than the one I have rightnow.

Noise: Given Howard Stern's huge numbers in NYC,do you think it's a no -win situation at WNEW?

Ted: No. I think WNEW could have a 5 share. Evenwith Howard Stern across the street.

    Noise: Why?

Ted: I think K -Rock is one of the most boringstations I've ever heard. They sound way too clinical.Anybody who doesn't understand the gains that K -Rock has made in the last year is out of touch. It'sALL Howard Stern. I wouldn't listen to that station formusic. It sounds like all the radio stations I haven'twanted mine to sound like.

Noise: Have you seen any Pollack people lurkingaround the WMMR halls of late?

Ted: No. We already use four different consultants. Ithink that's enough.

Noise: How would (WMMR GM) Mike Craven feelabout losing you? You two are like...well, a horse andcarriage. David & David. Gumby & Pokey.

Noise: I would work for Mike for the rest of my life. And from what he tells me, I don't think he wouldmind that. Because of him, it's very easy to get thingsdone. That's a huge part of the success here: Theattitude. The difference between WMMR and WNEWis that it's very easy to get things done at WMMR.And we have so many IDEAS. We use one -tenth ofthe ideas that come up in this radio station. There'snot enough room to implement them all, or time to getthem rolling. We can pick and choose ideas; we justuse the best ones. And we have the people who areable to make them happen.

Noise: So anyone can give input?

Ted: EVERYBODY gives input. We have communityinput for the morning show, group input for musicand promotions. All ideas are weighed. The MorningZoo is a good example of group input. John (DeBella)makes it all happen, but he'll talk to everyone:Producers, interns and people in the hallway. Hebounces things off people around him for reactionand/or improvement. I think (Promo Dir.) Jack Quigley,Mike Craven, and I do the same thing. Nobody hererules with an iron fist. With so many creative peoplehere, we would be doing ourselves a disservice toprogram the radio station from behind closed doors.

Noise: You mentioned DeBella. Talk about him vis avis Howard Stern. (Howard is simulcast on competitorWYSP).

    Ted: In the latest Arbitrend, DeBella had a 13.3 12+,Howard has a 3.8. A18-34, we have a 30.6[NoiseNote: that's not a typo], WYSP has 7.9.

Noise: You even blow Bryant and Jane off the dial.

    Ted: Absolutely.continued

    December 5, 1986

  • TA4IARD REPORT INDUSTRIAL NOISENoise: Why do you think Howard is having troubletaking hold in Philadelphia? Is it his "hillbilly"references on the air? The obscenity issue? Lack ofmusic?

Ted: It's a combination of things. Philly is decidedlydifferent than New York. They've had more complaintsabout Howard Stern here in three months they havehad in years in NYC.

Noise: Do you think that show would work if Howardwere in Philly?

Ted: Whether he's here or not, it doesn't diminishthe strength of WMMR and the Morning Zoo.

Noise: How much do you think the lack of reallocalization hurts Stern? That's really what killedSteve Dahl's broadcasts from Chicago to Detroit. Ex -W4 staffers say that he treated Detroiters likesecond-class citizens, and the karma kickback wasnuclear.

Ted: I don't think that's the main problem. And I'drather not outline the things that are wrong withWYSP. Let's just say that they have made what looksto me like a succession of less that brilliant decisionsover the past several years. They could write a bookon mistakes.

Noise: Does your research show Classic Rockburning?

Ted: No, I don't think it's burning. I just don't thinkthere's a need in the market for it. We play lots ofclassic rock & roll. We were the first to do it, andwhen the time comes, we'll be the first off it.

Noise: Do you deserve the title of America'sToughest Add? The Duke of Drops? (Laughter.) Whydo you wait on things like David & David andHornsby?

Ted: We have a very specific sound in mind. Wehave a good feel for the way this station should be.We have a music team here that is very much awarewhat WMMR is to Philadelphia.

Noise: And the hits aren't hits until you make them?

Ted: Without a doubt. And I say that becauseeveryone tells me "if you don't play my tune, I canwrite off the whole town." When the time is right toplay Bruce Hornsby or David and David, that's whenwe add the record.

Noise: So your timetable is pretty much your own...

Ted: Not really our own. More in tune with themarketplace. What the record companies are facingis a wealth of product from superstar artists. That aHornsby can make it to Power in the wake of PeterGabriels, Pretenders, Bruces, Kinks, and Claptonssays a lot for the quality of his music. I can name atleast fifteen major heritage artists which our audiencedemands before we expose unfamilar artists.

Noise: So if rock & roll is what WMMR says it is,when it says it is, if it says it is, could you guys takea polka and make it a hit?

Ted: Most likely, we could. But we want to be true tothe radio station's image. When people push the firstbutton on their radio, which is WMMR, we've got tobe what our audience expects us to be.

Noise: What's the greatest promotional vehicle foran AOR in 1986?

Ted: No one area in particular. The key is to useevery arena to your advantage. Promote what you areand what you want to be, and do it with flair.

Noise: Describe your success in getting your DJs onlocal TV. Some might argue they're on too much...

Ted: Every one of our jox are on TV at least once amonth, if not ten times a day.

Noise: How do you do it?

Ted: Long term relationships in the market.

Noise: If you could do anything to WMMR tomorrow,no limits, what would you do?

Ted: I would make it 500,000 watts.

Noise: You've got quite a legacy: WAER, WRNW,WAQX, WPYX, WHJY, KTXQ, and WMMR. Name onething you learned at these stations that helped youbecome the PD of America's Premier AOR.

Ted: At WAQX, I learned how to deal with the FCC,lawyers, bankers, guys who sell copy machines, telephones, engineers. I even glued thesoundproofing to the walls. At WRNW, back in theearly days, I worked with Howard Stern for a coupleof years. It was our first job out of college. I learnedhow to have fun in NYC in the radio business.... AtWPYX, I changed the station from Beautiful Music toAOR. I hired the staff top to bottom. It was the firsttime I worked with a consultant --Jon Sinton. It wasthe first time I had double digits --0 to 13.4 in two anda half years.... WHJY was a big stick in a heavilypopulated part of the country, and was one of theworst sounding radio stations I'd ever heard. Ilearned how to deal with futility.... Dallas was theBigtime. There I learned how to sit in traffic jams, listen to five radio stations at once, while taking notesand not crashing into the car in front of me. I don'treally consider Dallas to be my biggest win. I lookback most fondly on Albany because that was mycreation but, Dallas did more for my reputation. I wasdetermined not to be intimidated. I wanted to beintimidating.

Noise: What's on your mind right now?

Ted: Keeping WMMR on top. We understand the waythis business works. We know how the ratings work.We have to keep this station fresh. That's the biggestchallenge. This place has been on the air eighteenand half years, so freshness is essential. Dealing withthe strongest personalities (on and off the air) everassembled at an AOR station is really something. I amnot hurting for challenges by staying at WMMR .

FIGURES "THE GATEWAY" (TWIN TONE)A portrait of the band who escape tritecomparisons.... One listen will spark curiousity for asecond and third when finally, stunning chordprogressions and Jeff Waryan's distinct, throatyvocals take hold in "Dear Lee" and "Five Days...".Here's a collection of tracks cradled in a pure guitarlayers, with an honest edge. In this third release, theFigures have mastered a style you've not heardbefore and deliver on key --don't miss the acoustickick of "Easy To Slip".

    Quick Picks

We could have called this category "Parallel Picks"as the music may overlap, but this week sees somequality independent releases of the psychedelicpersuasion on the listening front.... MOOD SIX "AMATTER OF!" (JEM/PVC) Single out "What HaveYou Done Lately" and you'll want to dig deeper on anLp that's as versatile as one recent Jazz Butcher.Contains strong acoustic flashbacks, but memorablechorus breaks that score points for hip -pop releaseof the week.... DREAMS SO REAL "FATHER'SHOUSE" (COYOTE) Members of R.E.M. have beenbusy in the last year with side projects, and PeterBuck stops here to lend an impressive hand at theboard. "Birds Of A Feather" could be renamed"Byrds Of A Feather", and those psychedelicovertones deserve a blue ribbon.... On another notealtogether, lend an ear to CAMPER VANBEETHOVEN (ROUGH TRADE) an interestingcombo of players who flirt with the pop approach --but witty, offbeat songs are what you can count on.They deliver the goods with the help of a fine fiddleon "Joe Stalin's Cadillac", and for a killer seg, cue up"We Saw Jerry's Daughter" and wait for "SurpriseTruck". After all, rock is all in fun, so book 'em foryour next stadium gig....

    Single File

RED LORRY YELLOW LORRY "CUT DOWN"(HOMESTEAD) Those who skip out will neverknow just how good the Lorries sound on the air....Pure power on plastic is the story and it continueswith another black beat -monster. Make room. There's more than one Reed.

ERIC CLAPTON went into a Boston hospital forjust under a day before he began his U.S. tour, suffering "severe back pain." The New EnglandMedical Center says Clapton's pain was due to akidney stone. Clapton invited 20 doctors and nursesfrom the medical center to attend the show at the1,500 -capacity Metro. Clapton had been hospitalizedin Minnesota five years ago because of ulcers. Oneof the songs Clapton performed at the opening datewas "Holy Mother", dedicated to Richard Manual, pianist for the Band, who committed suicide last year.

BILLY JOEL has donated royalties from his anti -suicide song, "You're Only Human", to the NationalCommittee on youth Suicide Prevention. The amountof the donation has not been disclosed because Joel"likes to keep his charitable contributions private,"according to a spokeswoman for Joel. ROLO MC GINTY, who describes himself as "abenevolent dictator" of the British band theWoodentops, says he didn't expect the group to lastpast 1985. "When we started," McGinty says, "I said Icouldn't see the thing going on any longer than twoyears. Now we're on pretty well three, and it looks asthough we've got a few more left." McGinty, whoadmits the band's style is "very English," neverexpected the band to do well in America. "We werekind of taken aback when we found out we do reachpeople over here," he says. "Most of the time, wehave the nerve to believe that we're original. Wefigure that we're making a combination of pop songsand experimentation, and we feel our music is livelyand intelligent. At the same time, we figure that we'revery hard when it comes to rhythms and songs." Hesays the band is sometimes going in a lot of differentdirections, but he contends that "variety means, ifanything, direction in itself. You show you're notclosed -minded toward your art."

OMD has sampled some unlikely sounds to createeffects for its records. "The Pacific Age" is noexception. It includes sampling of Japanesetelevision commercials. "We were in Japan two yearsago for interviews," says Paul Humphreys. "Betweeninterviews, we switched on the television and wereblown away by the commercials. We recorded twohours of them, and took one- and two -second piecesand fed them into the Fairlight. There werecommercials for Corn Flakes, Seiko watches, thingslike that. When you don't know the language, thesounds are all quite mysterious." Some othersounds, never used on the band's albums, have beenstockpiled for future use," Humphreys adds. "We'reconstantly writing bits and pieces. We keep a bigback catagalogue of tapes, and we'll sift through theolder ideas and make them into something else."

CHEAP TRICK, X, and a number of local bandsparticipated in a 12 -hour "Rock Show For TheHomeless" in Boston recently. Estimates of thecrowd attending the show at the Bayside Expo Centerranged from 3,000 to 10,000. The show raised moneyfor shelters for the city's homeless. One of theparticipating local bands, The Movie, is releasing abenefit record in January.

BRUCE HORNSBY will tour the U.S. after hiscurrent set of dates opening for Huey Lewis & TheNews in Europe. He's likely to tour the West Coastfirst.

Tina Weymouth says the TOM TOM CLUB will havea new album out in the spring. The group beganwork on the Lp last summer.

While Pink Floyd's status remains slightly cloudy,ROGER WATERS has some new music justcoming out on the soundtrack to the film "When TheWind Blows". A David Bowie track has already beenreleased as a single, and tracks from Paul Hardcastle,Squeeze, and the Stranglers' Hugh Cornwell are alsoincluded. Waters composed the original score for thefilm, which appears on the Lp. The film doesn't openin Britain until January.

  • THE MUSIC NEWS

And now, the latest music news LIVEFROM LONDON, courtesy of CFNY and ourexclusive reporter, LEE CARTER. Lee canbe heard on CFNY's "Sunday MusicMagazine" program and on Live FromLondon aired Wednesday evenings.

You can tell fans of The Smiths that JOHNNYMARR is now fully recovered after crashing his carlast week (see last week's HR). The Smiths has alsorescheduled its concert, an anti-apartheid benefit, although it is now at a south London club rather thanthe prestigious Royal Albert Hall (as in how manyholes does it take to fill). Johnny Marr still has towear a neck brace for the time being, but theworrying and mysterious shooting pains he wasexperiencing in his guitar -playing arm havedisappeared.

BOB GELDOF's new Lp, "Deep In The Heart OfNowhere", an Lp which I have not heard yet myself, has been unanimously junked by the British musicpress in a rare show of solidarity amongst the diverseand fiercely competitive pop weeklies. It receivednothing short of awful reviews in "Melody Maker","The New Musical Express", "Record Mirror","Number One", "Sounds" and "Music Week".Nevertheless it should be remembered that "This IsThe World Calling", while being one of the hottestadds in recent months on North American radio, wasonly a minor hit here. Certainly there's a galaxy ofpeople helping out - Annie Lennox, Jools Holland,The Mint Juleps, the current Eurythmics and ex-Blondie drummer Clem Burke, Brian Setzer, EricClapton, Midge Ure, Alison Moyet and Dave Stewart.

Speaking of JOOLS HOLLAND, he's probablyknown more these days in Britain as the wittypresenter of the weekly Channel Four televisionprogramme "The Tube" than he is for his membershipof Squeeze. "The Tube" has just won two goldawards at the International Film and TelevisionFestival in New York. One award was for a hilariousfilm on Elton John in Nice, the other for adevastatingly powerful film of Dire Straits in concertin Jerusalem.

Boy George's brother, KEVIN O'DOWD has had histrial delayed for a further two weeks. He wasoriginally to be tried for one charge of supplyingheroin to George - now two more charges have beenadded: another for supplying heroin and the secondfor supplying cocaine, also to is brother.

VIRGINIA ASTLEY may not be a name that'sfamiliar to you, but two years ago she was the toastof the independent charts with the haunting andlovely "Love's A Lonely Place To Be" (Rough Trade)and an Lp "In Gardens Where We Feel Secure".Virginia's style comes from an initial training as aclassical pianist, utilizing a more left -field approach towhat is still essentially a classical style, with a ratherfey, pretty singing voice to match. At the time shewas compared to an early Kate Bush. It was stillvery, very lightweight stuff, but there are severalreasons why I think the time may now be right forVirginia Astley. Firstly, the era of more new agesounds like The Cocteau Twins. Secondly, she'steamed up with Riuichi Sakamoto and one track, alsoto be the first single, is a duet with David Sylvian

entitled "Some Small Hope". Virginia is now alsosigned to WEA as opposed to Rough Trade. However, I suspect this will solely appeal to ALTstations, or others with slots specializing in new age.The forthcoming Lp by Virginia Astley is entitled"Hope In A Darkened Room". On the subject ofROUGH TRADE, the flagship Indie, it seems to bein some trouble this week. The detailed story issomewhat complicated, but in a nutshell, a disputehas broken out in the company about the allegedmisuse of some local government grant money, causing some key members of Rough Trade's staff towalk out. It is unclear at this time how serious thishas affected the company that houses The Smithsand The Woodentops, amongst others, but one reportclaimed that Rough Trade was "fighting for their verysurvival."

It was rumoured a few weeks ago that dastardlyMALCOLM MC LAREN was teaming up with, of allpeople, JEFF BECK for his next project. This hasnow been confirmed. Malcolm has just signed a newdeal with CBS who revealed this week that the pair isrecording what has been described as "Malcolmripping off English music hall songs and giving thema hip -hop treatment." Sounds ghastly.

Sources close to the CULT would have us believethat band member Les Warner saved a girl fromdrowning this week. As the gossip columns havebeen only too eager to point out, this is probably notthe whole story. Les went to a lavish bash at TheManor studios, got a bit wrecked and wound upoutside by the lake, clambering into a boat with twoyoung ladies. The boat capsized and Les was luckilynot so out of it that he couldn't fish out one of theyoung ladies who couldn't swim. But what was thepurpose of his clambering into boats in the dead ofnight in the first place one wonders??

MARTIN DEGVILLE is fast establishing himself asthe rudest man in rock. The Ziggy Ziggy onemanaged to insult many people at one party. Heturned savagely on Roland Gift of The Fine YoungCannibals, demanding to know why he made a"hideous" remake of Elvis Presley's "SuspiciousMinds". He told Sting he was extremely ugly and, stillnot content, asked a group of B.A.D. fans why theywear ludicrous baseball caps with B.A.D. written onthem. Martin is no great beauty, makes music thatsounds like Jiffy Pop gone wrong and as for what hisfans wear - well!! A case of the pot calling the kettleblack methinks.

The music paper "SOUNDS" claims with certaintythat HOLLY JOHNSON is quitting Frankie Goes ToHollywood, but then it produces the most flimsy ofevidence: several sarcastic remarks Holly made in aquestionnaire it gave him. I talked to PAULRUTHERFORD this week and he was a bit cageywhen it came to this subject. He said that if Hollywas leaving he hadn't told him. He indicated that thefuture of Frankie hinged on the success of"Liverpool" which has become massive in mainlandEurope with "Rage Hard" going straight to numberone in West Germany. He said, "I know we're notexactly flavour of the month or the darling of theBritish media this time around." He seemed verycheered when I informed him that I had spottedseveral adds for "Rage" in "The Hard Report"."Yeah, it seems as if we're getting off the ground

  • THE MUSIC NEWSthere. The initial reports we'd heard was that the newstuff had done nothing over there, but then I heardfirst from Montreal that we'd suddenly skyrocketed."Paul also took great pains to point out that the grouphad become bored and listless as a tax exile inIreland and Spain. "We've come home now andwe're a lot happier." "Warriors Of The Wasteland",FGTH's second U.K. single, is doing much better andthe group managed to pull off a fab performance on"Top of the Pops" which should push it further.

ZODIAC MINDWARP AND THE LOVEREACTION, an outfit in a similar psychedelic vein toDr. And The Medics, had to unexpectedly cancel adate when Zodiac himself was blinded by an eyeinfection. At the sound check for a concert at TheCamden Palace, Zodiac was in agony and had to berushed to hospital where he was made to wear aneye patch and instructed to stay at home for twoweeks. But the mysterious infection has still notbeen properly identified.

Brave as always, SIOUXSIE AND THEBANSHEES is setting off to tour some previouslyunexplored places in South America, having nowwrapped up its North American tour. It'll be playingdates in Rio, Santos, Sau Paulo and Buenos Aires -which because of the Falklands War and the BritishGovernment's continuous ridiculous stance towardAlfonsin's Argentina, is considered a bit of a no-goarea for British artists. But Steve Severin retorts thatthe band felt much more apprehension playingBrussels after the Heysel Stadium disaster. NewBanshees material is expected out in late January.

The winners of the "STAG"/"HOT PRESS" awardswill be announced at a special ceremony in Dublin on12th December. These Irish music awards werepremiered in 1980 with previous winners including thelikes of U2, Light A Big Fire, Bob Geldof and Clannad. These awards have been fairly low budget until thisyear: for the first time there will be proper stageperformances and videos and it will be broadcast liveon the Irish TV network - RTE. I'll bring you theresults. Also, ballots are starting to go in for theBritish Phonographic Industry awards, the U.K.equivalent of The Grammies, which will be held inFebruary.

The American -owned and operated pirate radiostation LASER is set to go back on the air thisweekend. Laser, which broadcast a slick mixture ofTop 40 hits and oldies, became a genuine ratingsthreat to rather staid local commercial stations likeCapital Radio, but a year ago its ship was impoundedby the British government after literally being starvedout by a nearby government ship, preventing theillegal supplies to Laser from mainland Britain. (Itsfellow pirate, the veteran Radio Caroline, suffered nosuch problems. Being smarter, it is supplied fromplaces like Spain which the U.K. government cannotprevent.) Ironically, Laser is still using its originalship, The MV Communicator, which was boughtsecretly by the company from the government andbreezed out of the docks in Harwich, England, underthe Panamanian flag only to return to its originalmooring 17 miles off the Essex coast. Laser willcircumvent the tough British anti -pirate laws byselling advertising time through a Dallas companycalled Radio Waves Inc. Five American deejays arewaiting in the continent to join the ship and oneEnglishman, a former BBC newsreader. The dear oldgovernment, who has had the wool truly pulled overits eyes, is reluctant to comment.

Pirates of a different and more sinister kind came to asticky end this week. Three audio cassette piratesoperating out of Brighton received prison sentencesof twelve, nine and six months. The prosecutionsfollowed a tip off from the BPI (the industrywatchdog) and police raids on factories capable ofchurning out 2000 cassettes a week. As we all know, there is nothing even faintly heroic about these sortsof pirates who rip off the artist and the customer withtheir shoddy quality tapes.

BERSERKLEY RECORDS, the west coast -basedlabel, is about to reopen a U.K. branch after anabsence of eight years. When it did operate here, itbrought artists like Jonathan Richman to the publichere with feverish response. Berserkley plans to kickthings off with several "best of" sets.

The radio series that is causing a sensation here atthe moment is "YOU'LL NEVER BE SIXTEENAGAIN", BBC Radio One's seven-parter on thehistory of the British teenager, spanning 1945 to thepresent day. Peter Everett, the mastermind andproducer of the series, says he was amazed todiscover that nobody had attempted a show like itbefore. Everett uses a mixture of music, peopletoday remembering what it was like and a hugewealth of archive interviews with teenagers then andclips from so-called teenage shows of the time. Mostentertaining of all, of course, are the clips of moralmajority types throwing up their hands in horror. "Isee no appeal in animals bellowing downmicrophones with self -gyrating pelvises" shouts onelate fifties interviewee. Everett told me that he's lessconfident about the current youth of Britain."Nobody's interested in teenagers, because theydon't make up large numbers, and in a Britain of highunemployment they don't have any money. Thepeople who are buying the Bruce Springsteen boxedsets are around thirty. So they're economicallyunimportant and all the big battles have been foughtfor them by previous generations. They can't shockanymore even if they wanted to. you can't be moreshocking than the punk look, which is nowcommonplace - I mean, how many colours can youdye your hair? They could all walk around naked, butthe hippies already did that. So there's nowhere forthem to go."

EVERETT's series, which is bound to be an award -winner, could not cross easily to your side of thepond. Seven straight non-commercial hours aresimply too much to have appeal beyond these shores(how many Americans know much about Teddy Boysor mods or TV shows like "The Six -Five Special" and"Ready Steady Go"?) but an hour special out of thewhole series might be an idea. Or who's going to bethe first to raid the archive vaults of an Americanradio network and come up with a similar show forthe States is perhaps more to the point. Peter Everetthas also published a fact -packed book called also"You'll Never Be Sixteen Again" which is publishedby BBC Publications and in this country costs $7.18.

    IN BRIEF

  • THE MUSIC NEWSwould give away a calendar with her next single.Yup, SAMANTHA FOX, the lady who hasshamelessly redefined the word mammary, has setthe women's movement back to - ooh - at least thesuffragettes and puts out records with about as muchwhizz as The Partridge Family. The 12" also containsa "Christmas message" from our Sammy. And what's

the latest title? "I'm All You Need". Oh, yes, indeed...We won't hear new material from THE STYLECOUNCIL until at least next February, but it'll bepreviewing some of its new material on a U.K. tour inJanuary. It's also working on a film which is said tohave a proper plot with the duo acting' ELVISCOSTELLO is currently doing the same sort of thinghe was doing on your side of the pond: he's playinga whole week at The Variety Theatre here in Londonand plays another whole week at The Royal AlbertHall in late January. What a chap' MICK KARN,the former bassist for Japan is coming out with hisfirst Lp in three years called "Dreams Of ReasonsProduce Monsters" (Pretensious non?) and a tastersingle comes out in January called "Buoy".... HALFMAN HALF BISCUIT, THE SHOPASSISTANTS, THE SOUP DRAGONS andSTUMP are all featured on a new collection of Indieartists called "C86" which comes out this week onRough Trade.

    NEW SINGLES

My single of the week is without doubt the newie byTHE HOUSEMARTINS called "The Caravan OfLove" not found on the Ip "London 0 Hull 4". It's anold Isley Brothers number sung entirely in acapellaand is sure to be a big Christmas hit. It reveals yetanother side of the talented outfit who can do thoseblasting sixties -style numbers so prevalent on the Lp,the remixed "Think For A Minute" which is slow andsweet, Communards style, and now this whichdisplays their surprising vocal ranges and theirevident soul influences.... Another excellent single byTALK TALK is "I Don't Believe In You". Slightlyharder to get into as some of the other obviouswinners, but TT adorns this record in real painfulsincerity - a bit like Elvis Costello did on "I WantYou". A real grower that is bound to touch somebodysomewhere.

    CHARTS

Entering the Independent label Lps at number one is"The Moon And The Melodies" by THECOCTEAU TWINS WITH HAROLD BUDD(4AD). CFNY's music director Ivar Hamilton has reallyjumped on this, so don't necessarily go by my ownreservations last week. Certainly the army of Cocteaufans is a force to be reckoned with.... Jumping from#20 to #4 in the indie singles "Kiss" by AGE OFCHANCE (FON). A tough, gritty remake of thePrince record which rocks and grinds as much as thepurple one funked. Recommended.... Deposing TheSmiths off the top of the indie singles is "Sometimes"by ERASURE (Mute). A glorious throwback to thedays of Yaz with Vince Clarke's latest outfit andshould please those on the dance floor.

    TOP 40 LPS

"The Final Countdown" by EUROPE makes animpressive new entry at #37. Absolutely perfect rock

for U.S. AOR stations, which makes the band nameslightly ironic.... New at #31 "Rockbird" by DEBBIEHARRY. Radio One just played a two-parter of "TheDebbie Harry Story" which worked very well, particularly her amusing accounts of the early pre-Blondie days. Saturation press coverage here, too, people are real interested.... New at #15 "Disco" bythe PET SHOP BOYS. Expect every band in theworld to now remix its singles and call it an album.Who are we to question - they're the mark we'rethe suppliers. Better get it.... New at #14 the excellentnew Lp by THE THE called "Infected" - minus nowthe original controversial sleeve.... The highest newentry at #7 is SPANDAU BALLET's "Through TheBarricades". Proving perhaps its strength is in beinga solid albums band as the single only peaked at 6...."The Whole Story" by KATE BUSH, her singlescompilation, climbs one place to #2 with "HITS 5" byvarious CBS/WEA and RCA artists at #1 for thesecond week.

    TOP 40 SINGLES

"The FinalCountdown" by EUROPE gets threatening at number2, but "You Take My Breath Away" by BERLINcontinues for the fifth week at number one.

Finally, I'm sure across the width and bredth of yourgreat continent there are as many Syd-heads as here.I speak, of course, of crazy Syd Barret, the foundermember of Pink Floyd whose whereabouts andactivities since have fascinated
